Thinking About Corporate Worship
Tom Buck
H
ow you think about corporate
worship on Sunday morning is
critical. My fear is that we don’t
give much thought at all to preparing ourselves for gathering with God’s people. But
if the primary goal is to hear God speak to
us through his Word, respond to what we
have heard with a deeper devotion of our
lives, and spur one another on to love and
good deeds, shouldn’t we be more proactive in preparing our hearts each Sunday?
In light of that, I would like to share a few
practical suggestions to better prepare yourself for corporate worship. I hope these
become goals for you in the coming new
year.
First, make corporate worship a priority.
My intent is not to be overly simplistic, but
many Christians fail to see the importance
of regularly gathering for corporate worship. Some Christians have either sporadic
attendance or allow Sunday School to fill
that role. However, both in Scripture and
historically, the church has gathered weekly
as the body of Christ to worship corporately. This includes elements like singing,
hearing the Word preached, responding to
the Word, and observing baptism and the
Lord’s Supper. For some Christians, their
attendance is so sporadic that they haven’t
witnessed a baptism or participated in the
Lord’s Supper for some time. Surely that is
not honoring to the Lord. So I would encourage you as a new year approaches to
consider how committed you are to the
worshipful gathering of the community of
believers at FBC.

Christmas Music
Andrew Pressley
The season for Christmas music is upon us, unless your name
is Ryan Taber, in which case the season has already been
around for a couple of months. It seems that there is
an almost universal love for Christmas music, at least when
it is experienced in moderation and when the songs aren’t “I
Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas” or “All I Want for
Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth.” Yikes.
There’s a certain sentiment surrounding Christmas music.
You can almost feel the cold, smell the tree, and taste the
goodies during those opening sounds of “Jingle Bells.”
Through the years, we have grown associations between
songs and memories, particularly around the holidays. I’ve
heard it said that music is the strongest associative memory
prompter. I tend to believe it.
But this sentiment could work to our detriment. There are
many wonderful songs of the Christian faith sung around
Christmas time. And often, associative sentiment can quickly
digress into sheer sentimentalism. Sometimes, the reason we
like to hear certain songs at Christmas is because of the memories or feelings they trigger. This seems harmless, but it might
cause you to miss out on some glorious biblical truths.
The Wise Men
Ronnie Stribble
The Bible says, "And going into the house they saw the
child with Mary his mother, and they felI down and worshipped him. Then opening their treasures, they offered
him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh.” From the
story of the wise men we learn many things. We learn that
wise men still seek God; that wise men still follow God's
instructions; and that wise men not only receive from God
but give to God. A businessman recently sent a Christmas
message to his friends that I thought was very meaningful.
He told the story of a young man whose brother gave him a
new car for Christmas. When he showed it to a friend, the
friend said, "I wish....." Before he could finish the sentence,
the owner of the new car knew what he was thinking and
offered to take him for a ride. The friend asked to be driven
to his home. When they arrived, the friend went inside his
home and brought out a crippled brother to show him the
car. Then he said to his brother, "I wish that one day I
could be that kind of brother to you." This truly is the spirit
of Christmas. It is not what or how much we get, but it is
what we are able to give that is important. The greatest gift
you can give to Christ this Christmas is your self, and in
giving your best you will be like the wise men.
Consider the song “O Come All Ye Faithful.” I know no
more theologically precise summary of the incarnation in
music than this lesser-known verse: “True God of true God,
Light from Light Eternal, praise Christ, He shuns not the
virgin’s womb; Son of the Father, begotten, not created: O
Come let us adore Him!”
Or how about the juxtaposition of cradle and cross in “What
Child Is This?” “Nails, spear shall pierce him through, the
cross be borne for me, for you; Hail, hail the Word made
flesh, the babe, the son of Mary!”
I consistently rejoice in the promises that Christ is undoing
the curses of the Fall during this verse of “Joy to the World:”
“No more let sins and sorrows grow, nor thorns infest the
ground; He comes to make His blessings flow far as the curse
is found!”
Don’t miss the opportunity to pause and think on the great
gospel truths contained in much of the Christmas music we
sing. Sometimes sentiment and personal experience can cloud
our vision of the gospel. May that not be the case for us this
season!
Notes of Thanks
Church Family,
Thank you for the expressions of love, kindness, and friendship during the ‘home going’ of Sallie J. Simmons. They will
be cherished.
-Her Family
I wish to express my sincere thanks and appreciation to the
staff and the people of First Baptist Lindale individually and
collectively for your concern and support of me and my
family during the extended illness and confinement in a
nursing facility and the recent demise of my wife, Gloria.
She is now in her heavenly home with her loving Savior,
Jesus Christ. It has been a blessed comfort to me and my
family to be able to worship our Lord and Savior here.
I sincerely thank you,
David S. Lively Jr.
Words could never express the love we felt from our church
family during my surgery and recovery. Thank you so much
for all your prayers, cards, food, visits, and so many other
ways you showed your love for us. God has truly blessed us
through each of you.

This semester we switched our Wednesday and Sunday evening activities for our children. We now hold the AWANA
program on Wednesday evenings. To be completely honest I
was worried that we might lose some children in the switch.
I know that we have several children whose families do not
attend here, but come to AWANA. I was worried that with
the switch we may lose some of those kiddos. I knew the
switch was the right decision to make for our church for
several reasons, but hated the thought that some children
might not be with us anymore. Well guess what? We’ve had
more children this year than we’ve ever had before. To give
you an idea, last year the biggest night of AWANA we had
118 children. This year, the first night of AWANA we had
145. We’re so excited about the children that are coming,
many of which are not FBC kids. We’re excited about being
able to share the truth of the Gospel with those kiddos and
hopefully being able to have a connection with their families.
Please be in prayer that God will continue to bless in that
way. With that in mind, we are always looking for more help.
If you can listen, you have what it takes. We are always in
need of more listeners in AWANA. All you have to do is
listen to the children’s verses. Who knows, you might
memorize some verses just by listening to them and get to
see the excitement in their eyes when they learn one, too. So
come join us. You’ll be glad you did.

Stop Idolizing Your Children

In Exodus chapter 20 God made it clear to his people that
they were to have no other gods before him. God is demanding a place of preeminence among his chosen people
and the same demand is still true of us. Practically, what that
means is that our lives should be oriented around worship of
God. While none of us are tempted towards worship of
idols carved by our hands, many of us struggle with worship
of our children by making them the focal point of our lives
rather that Jesus Christ. In doing so we have taken that
which is our greatest blessing, our children, and worshiped
the blessing rather than the One who blesses. Especially
during this Christmas season let us model for our children
and for the world what it looks like to live lives that truly
place God at the center of our worship.
Thinking About Corporate Worship, Continued from page 1.
movie, why would we feel any less compelled to be on
time for worshipping our Lord? Also, it is important to
remember that we haven’t finished our worship until we
have responded to what we have heard. The mere dispensing of information without direct life-changing challenge
is not glorifying to God. Leaving early robs us of the
opportunity for the Holy Spirit to speak to our hearts
about what we have just heard and how we need to respond.
It’s not that the Spirit can’t move at another time, but this is
the perfect time that God has given to keep us from being
distracted by other things. In addition, if we want our time
of worship to be a sustained, God-centered focus, then we
should do everything we can to limit human distraction. My
coming late or leaving early might interfere significantly with
someone else’s attention being drawn to God.
Finally, before every part of worship – whether a song or a
prayer or the sermon – have the attitude that this is for the
Lord. “Lord, I come to sing to you. I come to pray to you.
I come to listen to your Word. I come to respond in
obedience to what you have to say.” Don’t drift through the
service as though the worship is on the platform and you are
simply an observer. Join in with your brothers and sisters as
the children of God gather to give him His due honor. The
greatest action in worship is when the heart draws near to
the Lord, and we encourage one another to focus on him
and desire him and trust him and enjoy him. I pray that each
of us will take action this new year to be even more committed to the glorious privilege of the gathering of the Saints.

The Diary and Journal of David Brainerd
Brainerd was an American missionary to the Native Americans during the 18th Century. Plagued by illness, depression, and general difficulty, Brainerd would be the first among us to have a reason to complain. And yet His passion for the Lord, mission work, and the Native Americans (or the heathen, as he
called them) is one of the most inspiring and uplifting accounts I've ever read. If you struggle with any
sort of difficulty, this is for you to be encouraged. If you struggle with complacency, this is for you to be
inspired. If you think you are doing well in your walk with God, this is for you to be humbled. The journal
is available online as a free download.

I can safely say, on the authority of all that is revealed in the
Word of God, that any man or woman on this earth who is
bored and turned off by worship is not ready for heaven.
