“Our lives are in your hands”
From the Shelter Director’s Desk…………..
What an eventful summer! The June Raffle, the Ice Cream
Social, the Pooch Parade, our annual Yard Sale, and the beginning
construction of the new dog kennels.
For Inland Mendocino County
Humane Society
from Shelter Director Sheryl Mitcham
Most importantly, of course, the great number of dogs and
cats, puppies and kittens who have come into our care and have
either been adopted or are still with us. Our cat population is higher
than it has ever been and our dog kennels are consistently full.
In the past quarter we have taken in 8 dogs and puppies and have found homes for 8. Cat and kitten
intake totaled a whopping 114 and adoptions totaled an impressive 76!
We are constantly looking for new ways to highlight our mission to shelter and find new homes for
displaced companion animals, to promote spaying and neutering and the humane treatment of all animals.
We have made a concerted effort to enhance the shelter grounds. Special thanks are in order to
Crawford Signs for our new shelter sign, as well as to Michael Martinez and Wayne Mitcham for repainting and
installing additional signage.
Gerrit and Janice Van Hattem produced original
whimsical dog and cat artwork for our fence, giving our
entrance a more welcoming air. Doreen Foley has labored
throughout the summer keeping our planter boxes looking
fresh.
We are particularly looking forward to bring out
our first Shelter Calendar. This lovely 14 month calendar
is the work of Kimarie of Fantasy Stills. She has taken
outstanding pictures of shelter animals and put them
together for a calendar.
Calendars are now available for sale at the
Shelter, or you can order by mail. They are produced by
Creative Workshop in Ukiah and will make fantastic
Holiday gifts. Order forms are on page 9 of the newsletter
for our new calendars, as well as our traditional Christmas
wreaths, greenery baskets, swags, and new this year, fresh
greenery table centerpieces with candles.
Check out our website for pictures and more information on all of our events.

Memory Wall
The wall, put up several years ago by Savings Bank of Mendocino, is dedicated to the
memory of special pets. Individuals who have lost a special pet can make a contribution
to the shelter, and a plaque commemorating the pet is placed on the wall. The wall contains a copy of the touching poem, “Rainbow Bridge”, about the eventual reuniting of
pets and their owners in the hereafter. Call Sheryl at the shelter for further information.
The individuals listed below made contributions to the Humane Society in memory or
honor of special people and pets:
In honor of Taffy Montgomery by Sheryl Mitcham
In honor of Brenda Flickner & Patty Phillips by Berta Tatum
In memory of Arline Hooper by Ralanya Smith
In memory of Pearl and Huey by Dr. Cynthia Steele DVM
In memory of Meda Bisordi Locatelli by Frank Zeek Elementary School
In memory of Charles and Mede Locatelli by Daniel and Leveda Lockart
In memory of Robert Gerard Barry by Nicole Y Willis
In memory of Joan Whittle by Terry & Bernice Strickland
Our warm moist fall weather brings mosquitos, those pesky critters that can make us
itch. But they can do more than that to your beloved pets! They can cause heartworms, which can not only be debilitating but can cause death. That’s the bad
news……..the good news is heartworms can be prevented!
If you don’t currently have your pet on a monthly heartworm preventative program,
visit your veterinarian for testing. After testing negative for heartworm, your vet can
prescribe a monthly pill or topical application to keep him that way!

Happy Tales…………..
Ditka’s Story
This is a story that is very near and dear to the heart of your Waggin’
Tales editor, Sharron Thomas. That’s because Ditka, formerly known by
many at the shelter as Creek, is my “Grand-dog”!
Creek derived his shelter name from the circumstances under which he
was found. He was a young stray, probably only four or five months old,
who had been eluding capture by running off into the creek bed whenever
shelter volunteers tried to catch him. This went on for several days before one of the volunteers managed to snag him and brought him in to the
shelter office. I happened to be filling in for the shelter director that day,
so I was occupying her desk. Creek immediately took refuge under my
chair and whined, cried, and talked to
Board of Directors
me about his ordeal for the rest of the
afternoon! Obviously, we immediately bonded!

A month or so later my daughter Michele and son-in-law Dave came to the
shelter to find a dog for them and their boys,
Nathan and Miguel. I swear I did not try to
influence their decision! After meeting and
HSIMC Programs
spending time with several dogs, it was
obvious that Creek was to be theirs!
Short-term Foster Program
Two years later, and renamed, Ditka is a fullBuddy Program
fledged member of the family. A sweeter dog
Mobile Adoption Program
cannot be found! He runs with his mom,
wrestles with his dad and sibling “brothers”,
and harasses his sibling cats! Best of all, he

still loves his “Grannie”!

Past Happenings…….. And Coming Events
Here are highlights of a few past events:
•
Originally scheduled for a June 18 drawing, ticket sales for our annual Raffle were garnering such tremendous response, thanks to some wonderful ads run by the Ukiah Daily Journal, that we extended the drawing date to June 25.
We raised over $10,000 again! These are difficult economic times, so we really appreciate the support shown by everyone who bought the tickets. Congratulations to the all of the winners (over 40!) and many, many thanks to all of the
individuals and businesses that donated all of those great prizes!
•
The Ice Cream Social Spay/Neuter benefit held on 8/17 was a lot of fun for all who attended, as well as productive for
all of the animals who will benefit from the money raised. Thanks to Leslie Dodds for spearheading the benefit. Thanks also to Kat, Bill & Dana of the Blue Sky Band that kept the
place hopping as well as our celebrity scoopers, Miss Mendocino Stephanie Page,& John
McCowen. Thanks also to our sponsors, Savings Bank of Mendocino, Rainbow Ag, Ken
Fowler Auto Center, Pawstoadopt.com, Crawford Signs, Arrow Fencing, & Dick Selzer/Realty World Selzer Realty. Also to Angels Distributing, Nancy Paxton, Theresa
Lackey, & George Kennedy from Ukiah Senior Center, John Bogner of Realty World Selzer for being our MC, Sue Whitman of Ukiah Daily Journal, Patty Gorden, Stacy Dennet,
Taffy Montgomery & her sisters, Evelyn, Mary & Margery, Lisa Mammina of the Saturday
Afternoon Club, and everyone who attended and made the event a success! I’m still trying to work
off the pounds from the delicious pie, cake and ice cream served!
•
The annual meeting and election of board members added three new members to the BOD, Garrit
Van Hattem, Michael Martinez, and appointee Galen Fife. Welcome aboard!
•
Miss Mendocino, one of our
“celebrity scoopers” with two
of our special volunteers!
A lot of dog-gone fun was had by all at the Pooch Parade on Sunday, September 21. The parade
started at The Broiler in Redwood Valley, with the dogs and their human companions strutting their stuff a short
distance along Uva Drive, winding up at the HSIMC shelter. Special thanks to
Katharine Kleiber for heading up this fund raiser. Thanks to Kelley Boesell of Moochie
Poochie’s for hosting games & contests for the dogs. There were doggie treats as well as
hot dogs for their human companions cooked by Gerrit Van Hattem, Rich Thomas &
Wayne Mitcham and donated by Andy Nelson of Raleys, Frito Lay & Pepsi. Thanks to
our booth vendors, including Margaret Winkler & Elizabeth Crosetti of S.N.A.P., a
microchip clinic with Mary Merritt & Doctor Barbara Otrubouva from Yokayo Veterinary Center, & Kimarie of Fantasy Stills. Thanks again to the Blue Sky Band, Selzer
Realty for printing and helium, Hakim Johnson & Roger Harris of Friemans Home
And they’re off!
Improvement, Shirley of the Broiler Steakhouse & Deep Valley Christian School for
use of their parking lots, Taher Zaki of Comfort Inn, Bob Angell Distributing, Kathy Kelly
& Nancy Bush of Silva Septic, and all of our volunteers and staff who made this fun event happen, and especially the participants, both canine and human!
Mark your calendars for these upcoming events:
•
Be sure to stop by our booth at the annual downtown Ukiah Pumpkinfest October 18th and 19th.
This is always a fun and colorful event, and we love to hear the rescue stories so many people
stop by to share with us about their special animals . We will be selling beautiful Shelter
HSIMC at last year’s Pumpkinfest
calendars created by Creative Workshop from the stunning photos of HSIMC Shelter animals by Kimarie of Fantasy Stills. Kimarie has also graciously donated a 16X20 photo
sitting of your pet as our raffle prize for some very lucky person. The prize will be awarded at the end of the two day
Pumpkinfest. We’ll have a sample of the photo sitting featuring Sheryl’s own Rambo, a very photogenic boy!
•
Our annual sale of traditional Christmas wreaths, greenery baskets, and new this year, fresh greenery table centerpieces is coming up. These are always tremendously popular. See our order form for more details.

PET HEALTH ALERT: PROTECT FIDO AND FLUFFY FROM FLEAS
REPRINTED ARTICLE FROM THE ASPCA
As the festive days of summer wane in many parts of the country, one little
parasite keeps the party hopping in warm, humid areas where he reigns. With
nearly 2,000 species and subspecies, the flea thrives at temperatures of 65 to
80 degrees and feeds on the blood of the unsuspecting—especially cats and
dogs.
Fleas are hearty and nimble pests, and when searching for a host, they can jump up to two feet, 10,000
times in a row—that adds up to the length of three football fields! They can also cause troublesome health
problems in companion animals, such as anemia, skin allergies and tapeworms.
These legendary leapers are tough to fight, but the ASPCA offers tips that will rub your pets the right way:
Know your enemy: Confirm your pet has fleas by identifying signs such as droppings or “flea dirt” in your
pet’s coat, excessive scratching and scabs.
What goes around comes around: Treat all of your pets, not just those who show outward signs of
infestation.
Shine on, pet parent: Thoroughly clean your house, including rugs, bedding and upholstery, and discard any
used vacuum bags.
Honor—and trim—nature’s gifts: Since fleas love long grass and shady outdoor spots, remember to treat
and maintain your yard as carefully as your house.
Doctor knows best: Talk to your vet about choosing the right, species-specific treatment for your pet, such
as a topical, liquid insecticide applied to the back of the neck. Never use products for dogs on cats, and vice
versa. Also ask your vet to recommend products for treating your yard.
“Cats especially are extremely sensitive to insecticides, and pets can die from improper use of flea control
products,” says Dr. Steven Hansen, veterinary toxicologist & ASPCA Senior Vice President. “Just a few
drops of concentrated permethrin, present in many spot-on treatments for dogs, can be lethal to cats.”
Due to increased production costs as well as time constraints our
Waggin’ Tales Newsletter will be published on a trimester basis
(3 X year) beginning with the current issue.

Matching Funds Building Project Update
Ground breaking on the construction of our new dog kennels has finally begun! A - Z
Construction hopes to complete the project before winter. Thanks to Paul Shimmin, our very
generous benefactor, fund-raiser extraordinaire, and project coordinator, plus a legion of volunteers and contributors, our dogs will soon be housed in clean, modern and comfortable kennels.
With the completion of the kennels, we’ll turn our attention
to the refurbishing of the cattery, kittery, and the infirmary; all of
which are in dire need of updating. Other projects will follow as
funds allow.
If you would like to make a donation to our ongoing matching funds drive to build the new dog kennels at the shelter, as well
as help to fund future projects you can send your check made
payable to the HSIMC Building Fund, to the Savings Bank of
Mendocino County, PO Box 3600, Ukiah, CA 95482. Your contribution will be matched - dollar
for dollar - from the very generous donations in honor of the late Charles Shimmin of $10,000
from the Bank of Stockton, and $35,000 from Paul and Linda Shimmin.
If you want to make a donation of materials or time, please contact Sheryl at HSIMC at
(707) 485-0123 Wednesday - Friday (1p.m. to 5p.m.) & Saturday & Sunday (11a.m. to 3p.m.).
