public library great trivia challenge, as it has for all 14 years.
The proceeds of the fundraiser
generated a gross of $20,000
for the Glendora Public Library
Friends Foundation.
Host and MC, Thom Hill, did
his usually great job of controlling the participants and crowd
as questions and answers generally generate conversations
between all in the auditorium.
Some teams even guessed the
correct answer; what a stretch!
The food was outstanding; the
spread stretched 50 feet, with
dishes donated by a wide variety
of cuisines. There was no shortage of dishes from the 72 donating firms and organizations, and
this food court served all, plenty.
The crowd numbered 325 in
attendance with some city council members, along with Mayor
Clifford. Raffle tickets for a large
collection of door prizes from a
wide variety of some 50 businesses were provided. It was
reported that the minimum value
was 150 dollars.

Duarte Allocates Funds for Empty Bowls
Statue of City Namesake
Event a Success
March 23 - 29, 2006
DUARTE - The Duarte Redevelopment Agency has voted to
allocate $109,500 of community
redevelopment funds, stepping in
to assist a community effort to
erect a bronze statue of city
namesake, early California land
grant holder and rancher, Andres
Avelino Duarte.
Duarte was born at the Mission in San Juan Capistrano on
Nov. 30, 1805. When old enough,
he joined the Mexican Army,
transferred to the Mission San
Gabriel and was assigned to protect the Mission property from
San Gabriel to San Bernardino.
Upon his retirement from the
Army he asked for and was
granted nearly 7,000 acres that
included parts of what is known
today as Duarte, Bradbury,
Monrovia, Azusa, Irwindale,
Baldwin Park and Arcadia.
Two years ago, the Duarte
Historical Society launched
Duarte in Bronze, a community
fundraising campaign to raise
money for the statue. As of now,
the campaign has managed to
generate $21,000 in donations
toward the cost to sculpt, cast,
ship and install the proposed 11-

goal were diminishing and that

Those attending the event
were able to purchase a handmade ceramic bowl, donated by
local potters and others, and then
were able to choose from a variety of soups donated by Village
Eatery, Village Vault restaurants
and Von's grocery store. A variety of crackers were donated by
Wal-Mart. Entertainment for the
evening was provided by First

Laughter Is Good Medicine
GLENDORA — About eighty
retired teachers (RTA) from the
San Gabriel and Pomona Valley's
recently met at the First Methodist Church in Glendora for one
of their four yearly meetings.
The speaker was Dr. Thomas X.
Cuyegkeng, M.D., a graduate of
USC, and a Fellow of the American Geriatrics Society. His topic
was "When all else fails, try humor!" or "Humor as a Strategy
in Successful Adulthood." Everyone can positively survive
being older if they are positive.
Old is defined as five years older
than we happen to be. We all remember how our parents and
grandparents were at 65 or 75.
That was OLD. On second
thought, we probably felt our
parents were old at 45. Those of
us who don't look forward to
being older need to take a different spin on it. For instance, "We
are not old, we are more "grown
up than we use to be. We can
cheerfully cast off the self-consciousness of youth and stop
pretending that we are just a
week away from being the greatest thing since sliced bread. Our
favorite designers are at Target,
and it is OK to be at K-mart.
Dr. Cuyegkeng, a Glendora
resident, works with patients
with advanced cancer. He tells
them that they are either alive or
they are not alive. Since they are
alive, they should act like it. A
positive attitude is most important for cancer patients. Norman
Cousins had cancer and discovered that humor helped heal. If

your are up-beat and positive,
you will do better with cancer
and all other health problems. You
will even sleep better. Humor has
many positive side effects, you
look more youthful, you are
more adaptable to adversity in
your life, you have wisdom (you
can see what is worthwhile), and
you will probably live longer. If
you don't, it still seems longer.
Humorous people are less
likely to plan for the worst case
scenario, and less likely to plan
for the future. They are enjoying the present. People with a
positive sense of humor are more
likely to have children and to take
risks. They are not worried about
the future. Positive people have
learned the secret of life. It is not
a BIG DEAL! The big deal is
doing. It is important to have
someone to love. When you have
someone to love, you can endure
most anything. Dr.Cuyegkeng
complimented the retired teachers for all their hours volunteering in so many activities and organizations. He said, "Our volunteer hours are our gift to the
world." The teachers laughed
and thoroughly enjoyed this great
speaker. A short business meeting was held and refreshments,
cakes and pie, were served.

Gladstone High Sees Increase
in Number of Female Wrestlers
AZUSA — More female students are trying their hand at
wrestling. This year at Gladstone
High, 4 members of the 16-member team were female. Salina
Cisneros, Nicole Villa, Samantha
Elskamp and Elizabeth Estrada
say that wrestling is challenging
and rewarding.
They don't see themselves as
female wrestlers; just members
of the team. Nor do they want
or expect any special treatment.
During the season, they spend 3
to 6 hours a day practicing.
Salina knew she wanted to be
on the team after watching her
brother wrestle at Gladstone
High. Nicole says she just likes a
good challenge. Samantha says
everyone on the team is treated
as an equal and she likes how all
the team members help each
other. Elizabeth says that for her,
wrestling is an escape.
With their weight ranging
from 103 to 125, they are quick
to point out that they have
wrestled both female and male
opponents. In the last year, the
four of them have become close
friends, encouraging each other
in what they all admit is a demanding sport.
All four plan to attend college
and are keeping their eyes open
for wrestling scholarships. While
Samantha and Elizabeth are still
exploring careers, Salina wants
to study music and Nicole plans
to pursue a career in forensic
science.

GLENDORA — A large
crowd showed up Friday morning, the 17th of March, for breakfast and politics at the Glendora
Country Club. Sponsored by the
San Gabriel Valley Chapter of the
Los Angeles County Lincoln
Clubs, a Republican major donor
organization, the event featured
all five Republican candidates for
the open 59th Assembly District.
This is the only forum to date,
and may be the only time before
the primary election in June, that
all five candidates appear at the
same podium, at the same time
to discuss their candidacies.
Glendora, San Dimas, La Verne
and Claremont are included in the
Los Angeles County side of the
district.
Assemblyman Bob Huff (R60th District) moderated the
panel discussion and question
and answer period. Termed out
59th AD Assemblyman Dennis
Mountjoy, also attended, as did
Glendora Mayor Gary Clifford,
Councilman Ken Herman,
former Mayors John Gordon and
Bob Kuhn.
The candidates included Anthony Adams, Susan Slater and
Barry Hartz from the San Bernardino County half of the district, and Chris Lancaster and
Kevan Otto from the Los Angeles County half. Each candidate
made opening and closing statements, and took questions from
the audience
The questions revealed a philosophical divide that paralleled the
county line. San Bernardino
County candidates Adams, Hartz
and Slater adopted a down-theline conservative position on all
issues, and noted their support
for the Governor on all four ballot measures he campaigned for
in the special election last fall.
Lancaster and Otto took a
more moderate stance, and expressed strong opposition to last
year's Proposition 75, which
would have allowed public employee union members to decide
for themselves whether to contribute to their union's political
campaign fund. They also refused to say whether they supported the Governor and the Republican Party on the other three
ballot measures. The California
Republican Party took an official
"support' position on all four of
the Governor's ballot measures.
Responding to a question
about their support for raising
taxes, all five opposed raising
taxes to cover future state budget deficits. Lancaster explained
his vote to impose a utility tax
on residents, while serving on the
Covina City Council in the 1990s,
as necessary to preserve police
and fire services.
Lancaster and the entire
Covina City Council were recalled by the voters for imposing the tax. Lancaster was later
reelected to the City Council and
resigned last year to move into
the 59th Assembly District in
preparation for this campaign.
State law requires state legislative candidates to reside in the
district they seek to represent.
In this predominately Republican 100+ mile long district, one
of these five will likely be elected.
With more moving into the San
Bernardino County section of the
district, it has a numerical advantage in electing the next Representative.
San Gabriel Valley Lincoln
Club Chairman, Dr. Barbara
Stone, noted that this was the
first time the 30 year organization had ever met in Glendora.
"We appreciate the opportunity
to meet in this fine city, and our
candidates for participating and
signing the Unity Pledge" said
Stone." Our Party will be well
represented by whoever wins
the primary in June, and has
written assurance of support
from the other candidates".
The Unity Pledge was instituted by the Lincoln Clubs in
1998 by Chairman Robert A. Virtue. It was inspired by President
Ronald Reagan's so-called "11th
Commandment" not to personally attack other Republicans.
The candidates Friday pledged to
avoid personal attacks on each
other, to campaign with integrity
and on the issues and to support
the primary election winner.
The Los Angeles County Lincoln Clubs were founded in 1979
by members of Ronald Reagan's
famed "Kitchen Cabinet", and
have grown to include over 350
members in 11 chapters throughout Los Angeles County. For further information on membership,
please call Treasurer Doug Boyd
at (626) 826-8882.

Monrovian Kathie Reece McNeill Honored
as 59th District Woman of the Year
MONROVIA — Assemblyman Dennis Mountjoy (R-59th District) has named
Kathie McNeill as the "2006 Woman of
the Year."
Mrs. McNeill was honored in a ceremony that took place in the State Capitol
on Monday, March 20.
A Southern California native, Kathie resides in Monrovia with her husband, retired Marine Corps Master Sergeant Rod
McNeill.
Kathie is the proud mother of four children and two stepchildren, Chris, Nicole,
Jeremy, Monique, R.J. and Jake.
A businesswoman, Kathie McNeill
owns and operates the Historic Aztec Hotel in Monrovia.
After purchasing the venue in 2000,
Kathie has embarked on restoring the hotel, while continuing to operate the hotel's
well-known Brass Elephant Lounge, which
features live entertainment and a restaurant.
Kathie has been honored by the Foothill Unity Center, receiving the Center's distinguished "Golden Plate Award" for her
continuing efforts on behalf of those in
need.
Kathie serves as President of the
Monrovia Performing Arts Center and the
Theatre Arts for Youth.
She has also founded, and now chairs,
Access Without Lawsuits, an organization dedicated to educate and create an
understanding between businesses and the
disabled to ensure access for all, especially the disabled.
These are just a few of the many who
benefit from the extra time and resources
shared by this busy mom, businesswoman, and community leader.
On Monday, March 20th, California's
Fist Lady and members of both houses
of the Legislature honored women from
around the State with a ceremony in the
Assembly Chamber and various activities
throughout the day.
The "Woman of the Year" program was
first established by several women then
serving in the state legislature.
The entire State Legislature, including
all eighty Assembly-members and forty
Senators, now participate in honoring
"Women of the Year" in their respective
districts throughout California.
"On behalf of the citizens of the 59th
District, I take great pleasure in honoring
Kathie Reece McNeill as our 'Woman of
the Year,'" noted Assemblyman Mountjoy.
