Dear Friends
I find myself looking back with reflection and pride, and looking forward with
hope, excitement and anticipation for what lies ahead. The past year was exciting
on so many levels. We welcomed some new staff and saw our two branches,
which started up in 2006, grow from strength to strength. We upgraded our

and very successfully rolled out our “Jabulani Kingdom” – a hospital
entertainer.

The new staff at Reach For A Dream bring new ideas and much innovation,
which is necessary for an organization such as ours to evolve. Welcome to
each of you, may you find your time with the Foundation to be fulfilling.
Thank you for all your hard work. It is because of your dedication that we
can continue to perform such great work.
The new computer system links our branches nationally and helps the
organisation function with much improved reliability. Information has become
more accessible and report generation is now available at the touch of a
button.
The Jabulani Kingdom, which is 18 months in the making, is an outstanding
achievement. Entertainers are positioned across the country, bringing much
laughter and joy to our children who are not able to leave the confines of
their hospital beds. The success of the project is beyond our imaginations.
The knock-on effect that it has provided the medical staff has been
phenomenal. Well done to the team that made this possible. I know our
children have been blessed through this process.
In addition, Reach For A Dream has successfully managed to increase its national
volunteer core. The Volunteer programme is extremely critical to the Foundation
as our volunteers are often at the coal face of our organisation. On behalf of the
board of directors and staff nationally, thank you volunteers for giving of yourself
in such an unstinting and selfless manner.
None of this would be possible without the support of our donors and sponsors.
They have supported the Foundation for many years and have taken pleasure in
becoming involved on various levels within the organisation. Many of them find
it a rewarding experience to be involved in our dreams and outings; or in providing
the much needed support at branch level through becoming “Captain’s of Industry”.
Reach For A Dream takes pride and pleasure in working so closely with those who
support the Foundation, it is through your efforts that we are able to fulfil our
mission to fulful the dreams of children, facing life-threatening illnesses. During the
past year we have fulfilled 997 individual dreams and touched the lives of 7000
children through our national projects.
It is with great sadness that we said goodbye to our Founder Owen Parnell who
passed away in November 2006. It was through his efforts and Randburg Rotary
Club that the Foundation managed to fulfil its first dream on the 1st of July 1988.
Owen, you will be sorely missed.
Thank you again to each and every one of you who have been part of our past and
are present in our future.
Best wishes and kind regards,
BRIAN MILLER
CHAIRMAN – REACH FOR A DREAM FOUNDATION

ABOUT US
A vision born in the dentist’s chair
That Owen Parnell was calm enough to dream whilst sitting in the dentist’s waiting room, must go down in history as
one of man’s most remarkable feats. However, as the visionary behind the Reach For A Dream Foundation it’s unlikely
he will be remembered merely for his nerves of steel.
Sparked by an article about the Make A Wish Foundation in America, Owen was struck by the opportunity to establish
a similar venture in South Africa. As a past president of the Randburg Rotary Club it seemed a worthy community
activity for his club and the Reach For A Dream project was born. On July 7, 1988, the organisation made its very first
dream come true, when J C Steinman was treated to rides on a pony and motorcycle for his birthday.
Officially named the Reach For A Dream Foundation in 1990, the organisation defined its purposes as “fulfilling the
dreams of children of any race, colour or creed between the ages of 3 and 18 years, with life-threatening illnesses”.
An everlasting dream of far away places and magical moments
The Reach For A Dream Foundation expressly avoids the use of the word “terminal”. The Foundation prefers to refer
to the children as having “life-threatening illnesses”. The term is not a euphemism. Many children do survive, even if
this means they are in remission and have to go for regular check-ups.
The illnesses vary and range from cancer, leukemia, cystic fibrosis and muscular dystrophy to kidney failure and HIV
infection. Similarly the children’s dreams are just as diverse, but they tend to fall into one of three categories: meeting
a celebrity, participating in an event or experience, or to travel. The granting of dreams depends on the generosity of
sponsors and all that is asked of the families is to put away the heartache and enjoy the anticipation, the dream and
the memories.
Best of all, the positive effects of the dream linger and children respond better to their treatment.
The dreamers, the dream makers and the fountain of never ending joy
The Reach For A Dream Foundation has dreams too. We dream of improving the quality of life for all children facing
extended periods in hospital, away from their families, friends and familiar surroundings. We dream of outings to the
zoo, flips in helicopters, games and activity centres for hospital wards, but most of all, we hope to make as many dreams
come true as possible.
How does Reach For A Dream come into contact with the children? Oncology wards and paediatricians usually make
contact with the Foundation. However, a parent, family member or friend of a child with a life-threatening illness may
contact one of our offices. Once the illness has been verified by a medical practitioner, the dream fulfillment is only a
short time away. A dedicated group of volunteers then meet once a month in each region to discuss dreams to be
actioned, as well as possible fundraising opportunities. The Foundation is self-financing and relies solely on the generosity
of the public and the community at large, so the granting of dreams is dependent on funds available, facilities offered
and contributions made. The willingness of both individuals and companies to come to the aid of the Reach For A Dream
Foundation is heartening. We are honoured to work with many celebrities, sporting personalities, hospital staff, as well
as ordinary people from all walks of life, in both dream fulfillment and fundraising.

STATISTICS
Reach For A Dream fufills an average of 4 individual dreams every day on a national basis and reaches more than
7000 children per year through group activities such as weekend outings and camps.
Since the Foundation fulfilled its first dream on 7 July 1988 for JC Steinmann, more than 8370 children have seen
their dreams come true!
At any given time we have an average 200 individual dreams waiting to be fulfilled. The time taken to fulfill a dream
depends on the nature and cost of the dream, but it usually takes three months to fulfill a dream from the date it
is received.

OUR SUPPORTERS
Corporate Sponsors
Without the overwhelming support of corporate sponsorships, Reach For A Dream would not be able to continue doing the
important work that we do. Reach For A Dream is tremendously thankful for the support we receive from our many corporate
sponsors.
Individual Donors
To those individuals who give unselfishly in either cash or kind, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Each donation
made, contributes to the fulfilling of a dream and the creation of wonderfully empowering memories.
Volunteers
The success of our work is dependent on the help and support of our volunteers who give up so much of their valuable time
to help make dreams come true by getting involved in all the needs of the Foundation – from working with the children on
dreams and outings, to fundraising and even office administration.
Reach For A Dream fulfils dreams with the generous assistance of over 300 dedicated volunteers on a national basis. Thank

Friends of Reach For A Dream
Numerous “friends” have been appointed as ambassadors to represent Reach For A Dream. Our friends have been approached
because of the assistance they have offered us in the fulfilling of a child’s dream, fundraising projects and their ongoing
loyalty and support of our work.
Our first appointed friend was Nelson Mandela at a meeting with our dream children on the 2nd of April 2003. We would
like to thank all our friends for the joy and laughter you have brought to so many brave hearts!
Medical Staff
Without the constant support and enthusiasm of the medical staff throughout the country, we would not be able to fulfil
the many individual and group dreams for our special children. Thank you to all the staff in more than 100 hospitals we
work with on a daily basis.

Distribution to “Dream Children”
In terms of the foundation’s constitution, at least 75 % of the net income will be expended on dreams amounted
to 43,44 % (2006 – 46,1 %) of the net income for the financial year ended 31 March 2006
The Foundation has been successful in raising funds, but the distribution to children has not kept pace with the
inflow. The 2006 year in particular produced excellent fund raising results. Emphasis on increasing distribution,
without compromising the Foundation’s criteria regarding the medical eligibility of each case, is a priority for the
2007 / 2008 financial year. In an effort to do so the Foundation is focusing on defining its long term fundraising
strategy with particular focus on a 3 to 5 year plan.
Costs of running the Foundation increased by approximately 31.6 % during the year. The largest increase was in
employment costs due to annual salary increments, an increase in complement and employment of paid staff in lieu
of volunteer staff in some regions. In terms of the staff compliment, there has been a phased in process of staff
spanning the 2006 and the 2007 year and the value of the development and enhancement of the staff’s skill based
should bring positive effects as the Foundation moves forward.
The Foundation will use its reserve funds to finance expenditure should it exceed income in any year.
The net surplus for the year, comprising total income less costs, amount to R1.21m (R4.52m).

Mews North, 355 Oak Avenue, Ferndale, Randburg for its own use. The National and Johannesburg Regions are
administered from these offices.
The expenditure on motor vehicles, in 2006 included, R87 000 in respect of the revaluation of two motor vehicles,
which were fully depreciated but are still being used. An amount of R25 000 was spent, in 2006, on a new engine
and air conditioning for an old combi, which is still in use. This combi had also been fully depreciated.

The investments included equity investments, which had a fair market value of R2 201 818 (R 1 496 778) at the
end of the financial year. The cash funds on hand with the brokers amounted to R35 857 (included in the cash and
cash equivalents figure in the balance sheet). The total market value of the portfolio was therefore R2 237 675. The
decision to move some monies into equities is to attempt to increase total yield over the longer term.
The other investments are in the form of bonds, property unit trusts, income unit trusts and a managed low risk
unit trust portfolio. These investments are considered to be low risk.
The cash and cash equivalents consist of cash in current and call accounts and money market investment.

DREAMS
,
Baby Jake said I was the greatest fighter he d ever seen.
You gotta respect that.
That I had been diagnosed with a life-threatening illness.
That I saw my bout with cancer as the ultimate boxing match.
That he saw the final round four years into my
, fight.
That Baby Jake was the most inspiring person I d ever met.
That he said the same about me.
The Reach For A Dream Foundation discovered an interesting fact about life-threatening illnesses: a larger percentage
of children survive than do adults. We believe that one of the reasons is simply that most children haven’t learnt what
life-threatening means; they live each day as it is given to them. For these children attitude is everything, and they
need all the encouragement they can get. Whatever the dream, it’s often enough to give a child the will to carry on
the fight.
Because our children are such powerful dreamers, the dreams we receive are as diverse as each one’s imagination.
The granting of every dream is dependent on funds and facilities available to the Foundation. Our children’s dreams
usually fall into the following categories:
ß
ß
ß
ß
To meet their hero
To participate in a dream experience; for example to be an aeroplane pilot or a fire fighter
To travel and experience a family vacation
To own something they dreamt would never be possible; for example toys, a computer and a television
The fulfillment of dreams works wonders far beyond the dream itself. A child enjoys and revels in every moment and
the practical benefits last long after the dream has been fulfilled. We are especially sensitive to the needs of siblings,
who often suffer through lack of attention, and parents who suffer tremendous financial and emotional strain as a result
of their child’s illness. So whenever possible, we try to involve the entire family in the dream experience.
Esona, aged 6, is a great favourite with the staff at the Frere Hospital in East
London with her huge happy smile. Her dream, for a doll and pram, was
fulfilled just before she went home for Christmas, and what a delight to watch
her unwrap the doll and see the box full of dolly goodies. She was completely
beside herself and wasn’t sure what to look at – the doll or the box of clothing!
Once she had examined all the contents of the box and satisfied herself that
it was all hers – she opened the parcel with the pram – just the cherry on
the top. She paraded her new baby and pram throughout the unit – including
the doctor’s offices and duty room. We can only imagine what sort of Christmas
she had with her precious doll – every time our volunteers went back to the
ward she was either feeding it, changing it or just keeping it right next to
her. It will be a treasured possession for many years to come!
We were also able to fulfil four-year-old Danie’s dream to visit a game farm. Danie
is fighting Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. We were told that he loves nature and
the outdoors and he and Prof Stones, who is his doctor, always talk about animals!
Danie and his family spent a weekend at a Game Ranch
where the whole family had a truly special weekend
together. Danie was flown over the farm in a helicopter,
where he could see the wildlife from the air. He was
also taken on a four-wheeler, and even got to feed a
tame zebra, as well as obviously being taken on a
wonderful game drive. Danie had said that when he
grows up he wants to become a Prof, just like his
professor in the hospital who takes such good care of
him, but after the helicopter ride, it looks like he’s going
to have to be a pilot and a professor!

GROUP DREAMS
Whatever the outing, our aim is to give these children a break from the
confinement of hospital wards and help them forget about their
treatment for a few fun-filled hours.
Reach For A Dream arranges group dreams for children who are hospitalised for long periods of time away from their
homes, family and friends. Last year, we organised 300 group dreams, which ranged from visits to the zoo, the
circus, children’s theatres, sporting events or just simply an outing for a burger and milkshake!
Here are some exciting group dreams we arranged last year
One outing that was organized was taking 8 children horse riding, some who had never been on a horse before.
Innocent, the youngest little boy of the group was petrified at first and he
wouldn’t go near his horse. After a while he agreed to ride with one of the
experienced riders, and as it goes with the “Power of Dreams” – Innocent
ended his ride sitting on his horse on his own he lifted both his hands into
the air to show everone just how brave he was!
After the ride, the children were taken to the stables and helped to feed the
horses, and then it was time for them to also have a quick snack.
Children were invited to an art gallery for an afternoon of drawing
and painting. The children sat in the beautiful garden under the trees,
faced their easels and, using the garden as stimulation, started drawing
anything that came to mind. Being surrounded in nature, and being
in the quiet tranquil outdoors of this garden was wonderful for the
children and they found it so relaxing. The children used their
imagination and let those creative juices escape. One of the children
told us, whilst he was at work painting, that when he grows up he
would like to be a boss because bosses sit in swing chairs and get
money! We certainly unleashed a few Picasso’s.

CAMP SUNSHINE
The jungle is deep and wide.
The king holds high his pride.
The drums beat upon my roar.
The birds swift on air do soar.
The sunshine warms my smile.
The kind found on a crocodile.
CAMP SUNSHINE
In our work, we see more and more that for children with serious illnesses, laughter really is the best medicine –
and there’s no shortage of that at Camp Sunshine. Whether it is swimming talent competitions, horse riding or simply
loads of foods they are seldom spoilt with, we ensure that every moment is a fun-filled one. And when it is time to
pack the bags and head back, our children leave yelling and singing. They are full of joy and love and just overflowing
with emotion.
Camp Sunshine truly is a weekend where the children can leave their illnesses behind in the hospitals for the weekend
and enjoy meeting friends who know what it’s like to fight a life-threatening illness through one’s childhood, trying
new things and most importantly, just having a weekend filled with fun. On the children’s return from these camps,
we often have parents telling us that their child has been returned to them a different child – filled with confidence,
hope and determination to get better so that they can go on the next Camp Sunshine.
Our Cape Town team hosted a camp where they invited 27 children for a weekend jam-packed with fun things do
to. The campsite was right across the road from the beach, and even a touch of bad weather couldn’t keep the kids
away from the sun and waves. Another highlight from the weekend was a visit from the AWF Wrestlers, which was
a big hit with the kids. Each child left the camp having made new friends, having enjoyed the fresh air and all the
treats that go with Camp Sunshine!

QUEEN FOR A DAY
Blah, blah, princess this, princess that.
See me wear the crown of crowns.
No fake baby tiaras or a floating
sash.
,
Queen is queen
and that s that.
,
One title that I ll hold forever and ever.
Every little girl dreams of being a Beauty Queen with all the trimmings! In association with the Queen For A Day
project in the USA, Reach For A Dream officially launched the project in South Africa.
Upon arrival, our little girls’ eyes grow as wide as their smiles when they see the nail polish, make-up and other
beauty accessories. It’s about living the dream of a Beauty Queen with help from current and former beauty
queen title-holders, models and cosmetic consultants. The girls receive uninterrupted pampering until they are
transformed into true Queens - not forgetting their tiaras and sashes. Once they are pampered out, its time for
the photo session. And just when we thought those smiles couldn’t possibly get any bigger – they do!
A day of what would have been treatment and sadness, is transformed into one of smiles and happy memories
to carry them through the difficult times.
Dressing Up For The Day
60 young ladies were invited to Queen For A Day, which promised
to be a day of pampering and fun, a real “girlie” event. The
ladies were graced with a visit from Miss South Africa, and the
young girls from Camelot Beauty School gave each young girl
a beauty make over, much to the girl,s delight. A chocolate
fountain at the event was also a hit, with some belly dancing
to shake off the chocolate! One young lady was not feeling too
well, as she had had an operation 4 days before, and was sitting
quietly in a chair on the side. The belly dancing started and all
was forgotten as she soon got up to join the others dancing.
After a day filled with fun, all the girls were crowned and each
one left a Queen.

CAPTAIN COURAGE
This was my special day in the sun.
The day I got to put ,on my armour.
As you can
, see it s invisible.
But believe me it s way stronger than steel.
From now on call me Captain Courage.
The courageous outlook our little boys take on fighting life-threatening illnesses is enough to encourage anyone! So
we decided to set aside a special day for them to take time-out of their daily treatment and the boredom of hospital
wards and get them together for a day of typical “boys’ stuff”.
15 little guys were taken to Randburg Raceway to become racing car drivers for the day. The caregivers reported that the
night before the outing the boys were so excited they hardly slept, and when they arrived their eyes grew wider and wider
with excitement. Our volunteers asked if they all knew how to go-kart and they all replied, “YES”. Helmets were handed
out and karts allocated. Our volunteer was a little concerned about a young boy and asked him again “are you sure you
know how to do this?” To which he replied “of course… its easy”. With that little Night climbs in the go kart, puts his foot
down on the pedal and while the go-kart is careering down the “road” he froze and couldn’t take his foot of the pedal thankfully the “tyre barrier” stopped the go-kart in its tracks.
All in all the boys had a great time and by the end of the day they were all pretty good at go-karting which proves practise
makes perfect. Before they left, each young brave racing driver received a medal with a go-kart emblem as proof of their
amazing courage.

TRACY FUN CENTRES
Because nobody needs a dose of Fun more
than children in hospital!
The Tracy Fun Centres makes for the provision of audio-visual entertainment centres for our dream children
in hospitals nationwide.
These Fun Centres are mobile entertainment trolleys for children who are confined to hospital beds or
hospital wards. Carefully designed, well engineered and robust, each colourful cabinet contains a TV
monitor, video recorder and Sony Play Station with a range of games.
Medical staff agree that the provision of suitably distracting entertainment for children in hospital can help them cope
better with physical and emotional pain, stress, isolation, damaged self-esteem, boredom and anxiety as a result of their
illness and extended stays in hospital.
A study in America found that young patients aged 5 to 17 demanded up to 50% less pain medication from selfadministered pumps while playing with these Fun Centres.
In South Africa these units are known as the Tracy Fun Centres, named after a very special young lady who touched
the lives of everyone around her. Tracy, one of the dream children, was 19 years old and suffered from rhabdomyosarcoma,
a soft tissue muscle cancer, when she passed away on 21 August 1998.

JABULANI KINGDOM
“I poke my head around the corner of the door and see the sad, serious
face of a 16-year-old man. He sees me. I oohhed and ahhhed - "You look
like a movie star." And he DOES! A huge grin spreads from ear to ear on
his face. "Would you like a clown visit?" A huge nod - yes. We do dumb magic.
He gives us the thumbs up. We ask if he wants us to sing him a song. Thumbs
up. We bow. He gives us two thumbs up. He laughs and seems SO happy.
And then, I realize, he does not speak. We play and play, and as we leave
his room, the face that had been sad when we first entered is sparkling
with joy…” - Stories from a Clown Doctor
The Jabulani Kingdom is a magical place where the
Reach For A Dream hospital entertainers come from,
with the goal of bringing warmth and cheer to children
in hospital, to provide relief from the boredom of being
confined to their beds and hospital, to distract them
from their illness, to show that someone cares, to
decrease the stress experienced by the patient and
members of the patient's family and staff, and to offer
patients of all ages an opportunity to participate in,
or to just watch, some silliness.
Reach For A Dream has recruited entertainers from
around the country, and will be performing at hospitals
and homes in each region that we work with. Through
this project we look forward to reaching a larger
number of children in hospitals who all need some
cheering up.

DREAM BEARS

OUR CALLING CARD
Imagine lying in a hospital bed all day and all night without a single visitor, even being an adult it is a lonely scary
thought. Well, what about being a tiny child fighting for your life?
So many young, frail, and very sick children lie alone each day in a hospital bed having to face being desperately ill
and scared on their own. Many of their families live too far away to be at their bedsides day and night, and these children
do not even get to hold their mom or dad’s hand.
Our volunteers arrive at the hospital, never having met this child before. What better way to break the ice than with a
gorgeous, soft, cuddly teddy bear. What child can resist a teddy bear, well, what adult can?
So we are proud to have our Dream Bears as our “calling cards”! What better way to say we care than with a Dream
Bear?
