Our standardized testing for the year is
complete and you will be receiving scores for
your students soon. In the diocese we use the
Iowa Assessments for our achievement test and
the COGAT for our ability test. These are tools
that help us understand your child as well as
our own program better and that show areas
we can improve. An achievement test shows
what has been gained in the previous year
as far as knowledge goes and an ability test
shows the student’s capabilities. Some points
to remember:
Why we test and what it is used for
• The teachers and staff use the test to
evaluate where both individual students
and the school need help or where both are
succeeding.
• Students cannot pass or fail the Iowa
Assessments, nor are the results used to
assign any academic marks. Testing may
be used for Decats or Duke Tip nominations,
and high school selection.

time at their booths and
enjoying the festival this
year. We are grateful for
the positive differences
you make in enhancing
the school lives of our

News .....................4
November 2015
This last month has been eventful with the 8th
graders attending open houses at the Catholic
high schools and getting ready for Lip Sync as
well as our usual studies. The 6th grade went
to the Pines Catholic Camp and learned a lot
about each other and their own faith. We also
celebrated the visitation of the Pope to the
United States with our Flat Francis campaign,
the prayer bouquet we made for His Holiness
and by praying every morning to support Pope
Francis.
This is a fun time of year for the students as we
enter the holidays but it’s important to keep our
mind on our studies as long as we can. There
will be fun things at school and out of it and
chances to celebrate as a school family; so
we will not forget the fun, but we need to keep
focus on our academics as well.
God Bless,
Matthew Krause, Principal
• Teachers utilize the information from their
classes to look for areas we can work on.
By taking this test in the fall, teachers can
use this information with the class they have
now and thus improve overall education.
How to read scores
• Percentile rank is the score that shows
where a student stands in comparison to
others who took the same test this year. It
compares the scores and ranks students
according to where their score lies on
a 99-point scale. 50th percentile is the
average score for this test.

In support of our PTC purpose to bring
into closer relationship the spiritual and
educational forces of the home and school
and to have parents and teachers cooperate
in the education of our children, the PTC
sponsored a Love and Logic parent session.
In attendance were about 40 parents who
were edutained by instructor, Brenda Bird,
who taught communication tools to help
raise our children with love, logic and
laughter. We learned parent management
styles, common mistakes, one sentence
intervention, five step problem-solving
process, C.O.O.L formula, oneliners and
more. If you are interested in future sessions
and topics, please let the PTC know.
As we enjoy cooler temperatures the last
two months of the year, we look forward to
upcoming holidays and more time to spend
with our families. Save the date for Saturday,
December 5 as the PTC Community
Enrichment committee will conduct a new
community event for the entire family,
gingerbread decorating and a movie. As
always, please continue to check on www.

volunteer events this year. She always goes the
extra mile to help others whenever possible.
Show your appreciation and MIS spirit to
Nolia and congratulate her when you see her
at school!
Thank you, Nolia, for your dedication to MIS!
A big THANK YOU from the PTC to all the
volunteers who put in hard work and time
towares making the Bingo Fiesta Night a

IMPACT
TESTING
ImPACT Testing: A Baseline for Care for MIS Athletes
This fall, MIS offered a new system of care for
our student-athletes: ImPACT testing. ImPACT
(Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and
Cognitive Testing) was created as a screening
tool to assist sports medicine professionals
in evaluating athletes after a suspected
concussion. While not taking the place of
regular medical care, ImPACT test results
provide an added measure of the athlete’s
recovery after concussions.
ImPACT testing took place for all students in
6th, 7th and 8th grades with the exception
of those students currently playing soccer or
football (these students will be captured once
their seasons are complete.) 5th grade students
will be included in the spring as the eligibility
age begins at 11 years old for the 20 minute
neurocognitive baseline test, which measures
the effects of a sports related concussion.
MIS Nurse Sandy Schluterman, R.N.,
administers baseline ImPACT tests to MIS
athletes as an added form of care for students.
ImPACT is a sophisticated, research-based
computer test developed to help clinicians
evaluate an athlete’s recovery following
concussion.
3
November 2015
In the preseason, each athlete is given a
baseline test. When a concussion is suspected,
a follow-up test is administered to compare
to the baseline results and to diagnose and
manage the concussion. Follow-up tests can
be administered over days or weeks to track
recovery.
Testing costs about $2 per student, budgeted
through athletics. Baseline results will be kept
onfileattheschoolandreleasedtostudents’
physicians per family request and approval.
ImPACT can help discern an athlete’s readiness
to return to play. While CT and MRI scans
help identify serious brain injuries, they are
not effective in identifying the effects of a
concussion. ImPACT can help in these cases.
Nurse Sandy has had a positive response to
ImPACT testing from MIS students and their
parents. MIS is proud to make this testing
available to our families as an additional way to
look out for the health of our students, showing
the great care that MIS takes of each of our
families. Play it safe! Use ImPACT testing to
have a baseline of care.

Spelling Bee Coming!
Grades 5-8 participate in classroom spelling bees up until early November. The classroom winners go on to a schoolwide (students
only to watch) event just before Thanksgiving break. The winner from the school-wide and a runner up go on to Diocesan. Those
winners go on to regional, then state then national. The purpose is to help students improve their spelling, increase their vocabularies,
learn concepts, and develop correct English usage that will help them all their lives. Start practicing now...the winning words for the
National Champion last year: scherenschnitte and nunatak! For helpful study tips, go to http://spellingbee.com/study-tips.

The style of the patron saint cards is different
this year! The PTC is excited to be supporting
a Catholic family who have created a creative
and charitable way of donating prayer cards to
those in need, as well as US service men and
women serving abroad. The proceeds from the
sale of online cards (such as these) are used
to print millions of free cards for distribution
to various charities around the world, on 6
continents including Africa, Asia and right here
in the US.
Check out their website! In addition to prayer
cards, the family also sells many other
goods in an effort to support their mission:
catholicprayercards.org.
November 2nd: All Souls Day is a day to
remember and pray for the faithfully departed
undergoingpurificationinpurgatory.
MIS students will offer prayers for deceased
loved ones as part of All Souls Day. Paper
angels will be sent home for MIS families to
write the names of their deceased loved ones.
The angels should be returned to school by
Monday, November 3rd. Prayers will be said
by Bishop Deshotel for these souls during the
“Prayers of the Faithful” at the November 7th
children’s Mass.
Need a refresher course on Catholicism?
Wanttofeelconfidenttalkingtoyourchildrenaboutwhatwebelieve,
and why we do what we do? These two excellent and easy to read
books are now available for purchase through the MIS PTC:
Practice Makes Catholic by Joe Paprocki
$9.95
Why do Catholics do what they do? Practice Makes Catholic gets
to the heart of the question-and to the heart of what it really means
to be Catholic. Kneeling and bowing? Why do we fast? What’s a
patron saint? What’s with all the candles? What’s an icon? No meat
on Fridays? Learn the answers to these questions and much more!
A Well-Built Faith by Joe Paprocki
$9.95
What do we believe? This book makes it easy for Catholics to feel
confident in understanding the Catholic faith. It makes complex
teachings of the Catholic faith accessible to average Catholics without
compromising Catholic teaching and tradition. This fun but important
book will explore our relationship with the Church, while re-teaching all
those things we learned as kids… and don’t remember so well now!
