FROM THE PRINCIPAL…
Dear Parents and Carers,
Education Week
Next week is NSW Public Schools Education Week. It is a very big week in our calendar and we have a lot going on
throughout the week. On Monday our four Dance groups and the students that are part of the combined choir will
be performing at Erina Fair with displays of students work being displayed for the week near Noni B. Our Erina
Learning Community have combined once again to highlight some of the programs that operate in our schools. This
commences at approximately 10:00am and concludes at 12:30pm.
On Tuesday we will be having our Public Speaking Competition.
On Wednesday we will be having our Education Week Assembly with Open Classrooms. Our Assembly held between
11:30am- 12:30pm with parents and families being able to visit classrooms from 12:30pm until 1:00pm. Parents are
welcome to stay for lunch with their child.
On Friday we have our Olympathon, which is our biannual fundraiser but also a great day full of a rotation of
activities for all of our kids. I am running the sock wrestling so I am sure to have lots of fun on the day.
P and C Election Day BBQ
Thank you to our P & C that held the Election Day BBQ at the polling Booth that was held at our school. They raised a
considerable amount of money on the day which I am sure will be in the next P & C report. Much effort goes into
holding these BBQ’s and I thank all involved very much.
Kindergarten Enrolments
If your child is joining us for Kindergarten next year could you make sure you let us know. We are currently planning
our transition program and it is important that we know how many kids are coming here next year.

CENTRAL COAST DANCE FESTIVAL DVD
The Central Coast Dance Festival DVD order forms have been sent home with the students of each participating
dance.
If you wish to order a DVD, please return the form and payment to Gosford East Public School by Friday 29th July
2016.
SCHOOL PHOTOS
School photos have been given out to students this week. Copies of group photos are available for viewing outside
the school office. These include Library Monitors, House Captains, Girls Soccer, Dance, Cricket, Choir, Boys Soccer,
Captains & Prefects, and Boccia.
Students who are in these photos have been given an order form to order directly online.
These photos are $15.00 each, and orders need to be in before the 6th August 2016.
SCHOOL BANKING

LIBRARY NEWS
Library News
This Term we are studying all things uniquely Australian. The Children’s Book Council
of Australia’s Book Week is 70 Years old this year and is held from August 20 th to the
26th. The Theme this year is Australia - Story Country.
Book Character Parade and Book Fair
We will be holding a Book Character Parade on Wednesday 24th August at 9:15pm. Students are to come dressed as
any uniquely Australian Book Character, Identity, Sports person, historical figure, animal or building or geographical
feature, any Aussie Icon you can come up with. There is a great poster on Australian Geographic depicting 100 Aussie
Icons, http://tinyurl.com/gvvrmwk if you are looking for ideas. Here are a some Aussie characters from books,
Blinky Bill, Cuddlepot & Snugglepie, Ginger Megs, Storm Boy, Audrey of the Outback, Hush from Possum Magic, Mr
McGee, Characters from The Magic Pudding. Or some Icons could be A Redback Spider, Kangaroo, Koala, Rubber
Thongs, BBQ, Surf Life Saver, Lamington, Sydney Opera House, Great White Shark, Vegemite, Holden Car and that’s
just a start. I can’t wait to see how creative the students of Gosford East can be with their costumes.
We will also be holding our Book Fair during Book Week and the fair will be open on the Tuesday evening of the
23rd, and after the Book Parade on the 24th. Students will also be able to attend the fair on Thursday the 25th August.
A timetable of exact sales times will be published closer to Book Week.
Shortlisted Books
The Children’s Book Council has a fantastic website with the lists of this year’s shortlisted books if you are searching
for great kids titles by Australian authors and illustrators at http://cbca.org.au/ .
One of the titles selected in the Non-fiction section this year is ‘The Amazing True Story of How Babies Are Made by
Fiona Katauskas. I usually show most of titles selected to our students, but I will not be reading this to our classes.
However, it is a fabulous picture book that has detailed illustrations and tells the facts of life in a very kid friendly
way and is intended for a parent to read with the child. If you have a child that is at the age where you think they are
ready to share this book with you, then we have a copy available for loan by parents. Come along and take a look or
borrow if you wish. This book is a good tool to add support to the conversation that can sometimes be quite
daunting.
Any assistance I can give in the area of encouraging reading in the home come along and have a chat.

READING HOUR
August is also the time to celebrate the Reading Hour. There is a set time as between 6-7pm on Tuesday 16th August,
however the organisers know that families this may be a challenge, the main aim is to read for an hour over a week.
Why not try 10 minutes a day over 6 days OR 15 minutes a day over 4 days just start on the 16 th August. This is a
fantastic time to share books with your children and encourage reading for pleasure. For more information and to

SPORTING CHALLENGE
In Term 3, all Gosford East Public School students will begin the NSW Premier’s Primary School Sport Challenge. It is
a challenge that aims to engage young people in sport and physical activity and encourages them to lead healthy,
active lifestyles. Students participate in the 10 week challenge by accumulating time spent in a broad range of sports
and recreational activities during lunchtimes, recess, school sport and P.E programs, class time, after school and
weekend sports. Students who complete the challenge will receive a certificate. The school also receives funding
towards purchasing new sports equipment if students are successful in completing their challenge.

Pebbles is the Word
With the implementation of our Positive Behaviour for Learning program up and running students from Gosford East
participate every week in activities that are aimed at learning about our 3 school values, Respect, Responsibility and
Learner.
After spending the first term investigating how this applies to the whole school, term 2 has seen a focus on specific
areas such as the Library, Canteen and Oval.
You will start seeing signage around the school to reflect this. Our ‘Caught You Being Good’ Cards are now a thing of
the past, being phased out for the one and only Pebbles. Students will earn these cards when displaying the positive
behaviour reflected in our 3 core values. We have already started seeing the positive impact Pebbles is having on
students, through their actions and language.
But that is not all you will see!
In Term 3, during Education week, the one and only Pebbles – yes the real deal, will be landing at Gosford East and
will be here to stay!
KINDERGARTEN ENROLMENTS 2017
Kindergarten Enrolments…
We are now taking enrolments for Kindergarten 2017.
Some of our families may not be aware that they need to inform us now in the
Front Office if they have a child starting next year. This can be done by the
parent/caregiver phoning us on 4325 2178.
If you know of other families intending to send their child to GEPS, and who don’t currently have children
at our school, would you please let them know to call the Office for enrolment details.

SCHOOL NEWSLETTERS
As of Term 3, hardcopies of newsletters will be sent out to the youngest child in your family. We have found that
although the School Website and the School App are fantastic tools and are used by many, some families were
having difficulty accessing the newsletter and were missing out on valuable information.
HARMONY CORNER
1st August Wattle Day, NSW
In New South Wales, Wattle Day is celebrated on 1 August. Wattle Day was used as a focus for raising
funds to assist Australian’s World War 1 effort, and to encourage a sense of patriotism. The date of Wattle
Day in New South Wales changed from 1 September, the national date, to 1 August because it allowed
the Red Cross to use the earlier flowering and more familiar Cootamundra Wattle (Acacia baileyana) rather
than Golden Wattle (Acacia pycnantha) to raise money to support the War effort.
1 August Horses’ birthday
In the Southern Hemisphere all horses born during the current year are deemed to have been born on 1
August. This is important for the horse racing industry as it clarifies the age of a horse for racing purposes.
1st- 5th August Education Week – Public Schools NSW
Education Week is a major event on the NSW public schools calendar. It is a time to celebrate the
achievements and successes of our students, teachers and support staff across all NSW public schools. The
theme for 2016 will be advertised early in the year.
4 August National Aboriginal and Islander Children’s Day
For an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander child, culture is a source of strength, resilience, happiness,
identity and confidence. For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children access to their culture is critical
as it provides a link to their heritage and a source of strength and pride. Children learn about culture and
spirituality and pride in their cultural identity from their parents, grandparents, uncles, aunties, cousins and
other kin.
5 August Jeans for Genes Day Funds raised on Jeans for Genes Day are used to support the Children’s Medical
Research Institute. People wear jeans on this day and donate money for medical research.
6 August Hiroshima Day
On this day activities are held to reflect on the devastating atomic bombing of Hiroshima, Japan during
World War II. Some 100,000 people were killed and many more died later from the effects of radiation.

Online payments
We are now able to accept online payments using the Department of Education’s Parent Online
Payment (POP) system.
A button to access this online payment system titled ‘$ Make a Payment’ will be visible on the utility bar
on the front page of our school’s website at www.gosfordest-p.schools.nsw.edu.au/ By selecting this
link, parents and carers will be taken to a secure Westpac QuickWeb payment page, from which they
can make online payments.

Important Opal information from 1 August 2016
From 1 August, magnetic strip tickets (MSTs) will no longer be sold or accepted for travel within the Opal network.
For easy access to public transport and lower fares, customers need to plan ahead and acquire the appropriate Opal
card before 1 August 2016.
What other ticketing options will be available for customers from 1 August 2016?
Opal is the easiest and cheapest way to get around on public transport, but as a last resort, customers can buy an
Adult or Child/Youth Opal single bus ticket on board bus services (excluding prepay services). These are single-use
tickets only, valid for travel from the point of purchase.
Who is eligible to buy Child/Youth Opal Single Bus Ticket?
The eligibility criteria are the same as a Child/Youth Opal card:
– 15 years (inclusive)
Concession card, issued by their school, as proof of entitlement.
NSW/ACT Senior Secondary Student Concession Card
School Student Photo ID’s will no longer be
accepted as from 1st August 2016.
Students 16 years and over must carry and
show Senior Student Concession Card as
shown.
See your School Administration for details.
Holders of this concession card are entitled to half-price fares and can apply for a Child/Youth Opal card.
Eligibility
You must be a school student aged 16 or over who is:


enrolled in a NSW or ACT secondary school or non-government secondary school, or
registered with the Board of Studies as a full-time home-schooled or distance education (OTEN) secondary
student.
International school students who meet the criteria also get the same entitlements.
What should I do if My School Opal Card is Lost or Stolen?
Report it online and order a replacement School Opal card and a fee may apply. By doing this, the old School Opal card will
be cancelled and a new one will be mailed to the customer's preferred address within 5-7 days. While waiting for a
replacement card, you should use a Child/Youth Opal card to travel if eligible.

competitions such as; A NNSW state wide junior only gala weekend will be held in April School Holidays for
under 8 to under 15.
JUNIOR PREMIER LEAGUE TO BE HELD Nov 6th, Dec 4th, Feb 5th and March 5th for ages under 9 ,11, 13, 15
Boys and 12, 14 16 Girls . This will be a prelude to new State league to come 2017 /2018.
STATE PREMIER LEAGUE COMPETITION FOR MEN and WOMEN will be held on Sunday, in October
2016. You must be registered at any NNSW Futsal club to compete at STATE and NATIONALS.
A NEW Nationals League starts February after Nationals.
