(Dailynews.lk) - The tourism industry in Sri Lanka will
bring USD 2.75 billion to the country within the next five
years. Tourist Board Chairman Nalaka Godahewa said
that the real growth will begin from 2012 once all
infrastructure such as hotels and roads are ready.
There is a lot of interest among investors to develop
the industry but the process will take sometime’ he
said.
Over 400,000 tourists have arrived in Sri Lanka up to
October this year which is a nearly 47 percent increase
compared to last year. India, UK,
Germany, the Middle East,the Maldives,
France , Australia, Canada, USA and the

that the 21st suspect had failed to deposit a sum

Nineteen other suspects arrested in this

Wheat flour ban
at hospital canteens
By Sandun A. Jayasekera
(dailymirror.lk) Hospital Canteens will no longer
be allowed to sell wheat based food items such
as bread, buns and cake, a health ministry
spokesman said yesterday.
He said Health Minister Mithripala Sirisena had
taken this decision to motivate people to eat more
rice and discourage the consumption of food
items made out of wheat flour.
At the ministry’s progress review meeting he
asked hospital directors to instruct all hospitals to
ban the sale of such food items.
Doctors who participated at the meeting
welcomed this move and said food items made of
wheat flour were the source of many non
communicable diseases such as high blood
pressure, renal failure and obesity.
Minister Sirisena said this move would help in
reducing the annual import budget on wheat floor.

Biodiversity Conservation, the theme of the

EXPULSION OF NORTHERN SRI LANKA MUSLIMS
TWENTIETH YEAR REMEMBRANCE
From left to right: N. R. Ramamoorthy, Riza Hehiya, Najah Mohamed,
Ustaad Hajjul Akbar and Chinniah Rajeshkumar
MEETING BY SRI LANKA DEMOCRACY
FORUM (SLDF) AND SRI LANKA ISLAMIC
FORUM (SLIF-UK)
Sri Lanka Democracy Forum (SLDF) and Sri
Lanka Islamic Forum (SLIF-UK) jointly held a
meeting on 30 October 2010 at the Berkeley
Business Centre in Stratford, London, in
remembrance of the expulsion of the northern
Muslims 20 years ago, in October 1990.
The eviction, the return and resettlement of
the northern Muslim population was
discussed in the context of rebuilding good
relations between Muslims and Tamils which
had been badly damaged during the war
years.
Ustaz Rashid Hajjul Akbar, the leader of the
Sri Lanka Jaamaat E Islami who is now
visiting UK was the guest speaker at the
gathering. Najah Mohamed of SLIF UK
chaired the meeting. Chinniah Rajeshkumar
(SLDF), Riza Yehiya, ( Reseacher, SIRD
Colombo) and N.R.Ramamoorthy,(former
MP) were the speakers on the panel.
Rajeshkumar who had recently visited Jaffna
described the complex nature of the problem.
Riza Yehiya emphasised that through civil
action joint socio-economic projects for both
communities have to be developed identifying
the needs of the communities. Ramamoorthy
stated that Tamils have to re-examine their
attitudes towards the Muslim community.
Ustaz Hajjul Akbar said that the urgent need
was to focus on the return of the IDPs and
their resettlement including the Northern
Muslims so that IDPs could achieve their basis for
survival. He added that focusing exclusively on a
campaign for a political solution at this juncture was
not sufficient - especially in the current political
climate. He also stated that it was up to the
grassroots and civil society organisations locally, to
work towards the resettlement of the IDPs and
community cohesion.
All speakers including the chair emphasised the fact
that political parties and successive governments
have failed to adequately address the resettlement
issue of the northern Muslims and other IDPs and
have indeed benefited from ethnic polarisation.
Therefore instead of waiting, civil action was now
needed.
Members representing different organisations were
present at the meeting and a robust discussion lasted
an hour and a half. The importance of rebuilding
good relations with ordinary Sinhalese and the
progressive sections of the Sinhala community was
also emphasised.
Most importantly, it was felt that a public call by
political and civil society leadership of the Tamil
community welcoming the northern Muslims back to
the north right now was crucial.
The meeting adjourned requesting both host
organisations to put together a set of ideas that could
be taken forward for further discussion both in Sri
Lanka and in the Diaspora communities for mutual
understanding and to strengthen good relation
among communities.

Hindu religious leaders of the Gampaha

Secretariat yesterday. The Prime Minister
was welcomed in traditional Hindu
fashion by Kugeswara Kurukkal, the Chief
priest of the Siththivinayagar Kovil of the
Negombo district . The Prime Minister
further noted that animal sacrifices will be
banned in Sri Lanka.” Animal slaughter is
a disgusting sight at religious events,” he
said.
“Stern action should be taken against this
scandalous behaviour at religious
centres”, he said. Hindu religious leaders
should take into consideration themselves
whether animal sacrifice is acceptable or
not in sacred places, he said.
There are two Hindu Kovils in Chilaw
where animal sacrifice takes place in
public, he revealed.
The Prime Minister said the law that
applies to kovils in India will be studied to
stop animal sacrifices in Sri Lanka.
He further said there is a bigger role to be
played by Hindu religious leaders in
regard to the development of Sri Lanka.
All communities should be perceived as
one in a united country. “Unless we are
united putting aside petty differences, the
country will not be developed,” he added.

National Languages Minister assures:
Trilingual society by 2020
Disna Mudalige
(dailynews.lk/2010/11/03) Measures are
taken to build a trilingual society by 2020,
where all communities are capable of
communicating in Sinhala, Tamil and
English, said National Languages and
Social Integration Minister S B Navinne.
He was addressing the inauguration
ceremony of ‘Reflections 2010: Managing
Diversity, Reconciliation and
Development,’ held at the Galle Face
hotel last Sunday. He said that the
language is a key factor for social capital
which is vital to promote reconciliation.
He noted that a national policy based on
the recommendations of Lessons Learnt
and Reconciliation Commission is being
prepared for social integration.
“Diversity is the name of our society. It is
impossible to live without it, and we must
be taught to understand its beauty and
importance. Then only we will be able to
amalgamate with the opposite creating a
multi coloured society” he observed.
The Minister said that it is unfortunate
that developing countries are allocating
huge amount of funds for wars and
security when they have enough social
issues packed up such as education,
health and environment problems.
Addressing the gathering German
Ambassador Uwe Jens Plotner pointed
out that Sri Lanka is now beginning to
shift focus from immediate relief to
reconciliation and development, since
immediate aftermaths of war are coming
to an end after more than one and half
years of its conclusion.
He said that their work aims the social
structure of the island as a whole, and
that they are highly concerned whether
the projects are sustainable to Sri Lankan
hands. He expressed that their projects
are carried on highlighting the North and
the East populations who are the most
vulnerable segment of the society at the
moment. European Union Delegation
Head H E Bernard Savage noted that
they are ready to give technical and
financial support for reconciliation and
policy formation when it is needed and
welcome.
He commended that Sri Lanka has
entered a new chapter and the portfolios
of the Ministry are redefined as social
integration considering the current
situation in the country.

World Prosperity Index: Lanka up nine positions
Rasika Somarathna
(Dailynews.lk) - *Ranked 59 among 109 nations
*Lanka highest ranked among S Asian nations Sri
Lanka has climbed nine positions from 2009 to be
ranked 59 among 110 nations, in the World
Prosperity Index - 2010, announced yesterday. Sri
Lanka is also the highest ranked country among
South Asian nations. In the overall rankings Sri
Lanka is just behind China, ranked 58. Among
other South Asian nations India has been ranked
at 88, Nepal 91, Bangladesh 96 and Pakistan 109.
According to the 2010 report Sri Lanka which went
nine places up is also the third highest gainer from
2009. Indonesia jumped 15 places to be ranked 70
and Algeria went up 12 places to be ranked at 79.
The 'Legatum' prosperity index assesses 110
countries accounting for over 90 percent of the
world's population and is based on 89 different
variables, each of which has a demonstrated effect
on economic growth or on personal well-being.
The index consists of eight sub-indexes, each of
which represents a fundamental aspect of
prosperity.
It is done by taking into account both economic
growth and citizens' quality of life, drawing on data
from various sources, including the Gallup World
Poll 2009 and UN development Report. The
Legatum Prosperity Index is the world’s only global
assessment of wealth and well-being. This means
it is the only global index that measures both the
factors that produce economic growth and those
that produce happy citizens.
The eight sub indexes which the report evaluates

opportunity, governance, education, health, safety

and security, personal freedom and social capital.
In the overall economic rating Sri Lanka is placed
84th. However Sri Lanka is placed 10th in the
world for positive perceptions of the countries
economic outlook. Also Sri Lanka enjoys the 24th
highest level of foreign direct investment globally.
Citing the 2009 survey the report says that 87
percent respondents expressed confidence in the
countries financial system in 2009, which is the
fourth highest proportion worldwide. In the
education category Sri Lanka’s overall ranking is
56th. However the report states that an enrollment
rate of 99.7 percent of primary age children places
Sri Lanka fourth highest in the index. Citing the
2009 survey it says that 84 percent has expressed
satisfaction in the system. In the governance
category Sri Lanka is placed 43rd. The report
states that 94 percent of the population reported
confidence in the Government in 2009 survey.
Further 65 percent were satisfied with the
countries efforts to deal with poverty, 72 per cent
with its efforts to preserve environment. Sri Lanka
is placed in the top 15 in the two variables.
According to the report most people do not believe
corruption to be widespread in government or
business, a perception that places the country
among the best 25 countries. The report citing
2009 survey says that a very high 97 percent of
citizens have placed their confidence in the Sri
Lanka military while 87 percent have confidence in
the judicial system. Sri Lanka is placed on the top
10 globally in both categories.
There is plenty of scope for industries such as
construction and infrastructure development,
hospitality, food processing, fishing, automobile,
apparel and textiles, agriculture, banking and
finance, information technology and lot more, the
organizers say.
The first-ever Jaffna International Trade Fair 2010

With the conclusion of decades-long war and the
opening of the A-9 mail highway, Jaffna has
become a golden opportunity for businesses to

SriLankan Airlines honours hundreds of long-serving staff
SriLankan Airlines celebrated the loyalty of
hundreds of its longest-serving staff with a
gala evening 'Celebration of Excellence' at
Waters Edge in Colombo, including an
amazing 171staff members who have served
the National Carrier since its inception more
than three decades ago.
Chairman Nishantha Wickremasinghe said:
“There aren't many companies anywhere in
the world which have such a high percentage
of its founding employees with them after 30
years. This speaks volumes of the quality of
both SriLankan Airlines and its staff. It is fitting
that as SriLankan Airlines stands on the verge
of success, we celebrate our everyday heroes
the thousands of men and women who have
served this airline around the world for many
years. Of the 2,148 employees recruited
during SriLankan's first year in existence,
nearly 10% remain with the airline. This is
despite its global standing as a nursery for the
worldwide air transport industry, where pilots,
cabin crew, aircraft engineers, and ground
staff have their formative years in the industry
and go on to other airlines, especially in Asia
and the Middle East.
Manoj Gunawardena, SriLankan's CEO, said:
“This is a celebration of loyalty. SriLankan
Airlines has kept its loyalty to its employees
by providing them with secure livelihoods
even at the worst of times in the global air
transport industry, and the airline's employees
have kept their loyalty by faithfully serving the
company. With our country at peace and the
global economy recovering, the hard times
are over for our airline, and all our employees
can look forward to good times.”
Mementoes and certificates were presented
to 687 employees who completed 30, 25, 20,
15, and 10 years in 2009/10, with the 30-year
awards being presented for the first time in
the airline's history.
Pradeepa Dahanayake, Head of Human
Resources, said: “These pioneering
employees are the senior members of the
SriLankan Airlines Family, whom we will count
on to help our airline achieve results in the
future, especially by sharing their wealth of
experience and nurturing our younger
colleagues.”
The veteran staff included many of the
Airline's Heads of Divisions and Senior
Managers whose careers have progressed
throughout the years in the company.
Captain Milinda Ratnayake, Head of Service
Delivery, who was one of the airline's
founding staff, said: “Every one of us is proud
to have served our National Carrier, which
has carried the Sri Lankan flag around the
world since 1979, and has instilled in all of us
a sense of loyalty and patriotism.”
Long-standing staff hailed from categories as
diverse as pilots, cabin crew, security officers,
aircraft engineers, accountants, ground staff,
and also serving in 17 of the airline's
overseas offices from London to Singapore.

193rd Anniversary of “Shaikh Usman Waliyullah Shrine”
“Dewatagaha Moorish Mosque” and its history:
M Faisal Faleel President: Muslim Welfare
Association of Sri Lanka
(dailynews.lk/2010/11/02) The name Dewatagaha
Mosque is a household name in Sri Lanka. Both the
Muslims and non Muslims use this name to which
refers the Mosque. The shrine which you find by the
side of the mosque is patronized not only by
Muslims but also by people who belong to other
faiths. People of every class, race and religion have
kept their steadfast faith in the shrine.
Even the high and mighty and those belonging to
high strata of society have sought refuge in the
shrine. By virtue of this fact the Dewatagaha Jumma
Mosque and Shrine is commonly sought to solve
whatever the problems they may have. Everyone
who goes there has the highest regard to the
famous saint Shaikh Usman Waliyallah.
Cinnamon Gardens where the Dewatagaha Mosque
is situated was a mere jungle over 190 years ago.
The place where the mosque is located came into
prominence as a result of a miracle in the cinnamon
jungle in the year 1818. Female selling oil as her
trade, had a habit to travel from Bambalapitiya via
Torrington through the Cinnamon jungle to
Maradana to sell oil to her regular customers.
One of them was Mamina Pillai (Lebbe). One of her
daily rounds, she tripped over the root of a
Dewatagaha tree and fell. The pot of oil she was
carrying on her head also fell and broke into pieces.
Highly worried she started to cry that her family will
not have food that day as her means of livelihood
had been destroyed. Helpless and desperate she
fell into a sleep.
In her sleep she was awakened by a voice. It
advised her not to despair of the loss she has
suffered and requested her to get up with the
assurance the loss would be compensated. Looking
up, she saw no one near her. She started to cry
again. Again the same voice was heard. She felt
utterly surprised as she could not see any human
being in her vicinity in that thick jungle. Miraculously
she was overjoyed when she saw an old man in a
green garb who gave her a word of advice, not to
worry of her loss and promised to give her oil only if
she could fetch a pot. This old man in a green garb
was the saint.
The hapless woman went to a Muslim house in
Maradana where her regular customer Mamina
Pillai lived. She requested a pot from his mother. On
her questioning, the oil seller replied she would
come back and relate the story. On returning she
noticed the saint reclining against a tree called
Dewatagaha.
The saint demanded the woman to place th pot in
the place where the earlier pot broke. When the
saint pressed his foot on the Mother Earth. A miracle
occurred. Lo and behold! Oil gushed forth from the
ground. The woman was simply amazed and
dumbfounded. The saint requested her to collect the
oil with the leaves from the Dewatagaha tree and fill
up the pot. He said “you can now earn your living”.
The saint advised her to tell about this incident and
to show the spot where the saint appeared to her

Immediately thereafter she went to Mamina Pillai’s
house and revealed the story of the miracle to his
mother. Soon a group of people comprising Mamina
Pillai, Periya Pitchai, Meera Kani and the oil seller
went to the spot where the miracle had taken place.
There was the broken pot, the seeping oil,
Dewatagaha tree and its leaves. This scenario was
proof enough to believe the miracle. Subseqently
they recited Mowlood in the name of Prophet (Sal),
Soorah Yaseen and Faththiha in the name of the
saint. It was the 4th Day of Dhul Kha’dha; hence
they decided to celebrate annually.
A pious person from Yearvaadi visited Ceylon in
about 1847. His name was Sheikh Ali Jabbarooth
Moulana and lived by the side of Maradana Jumma
Mosque, Colombo. Mamina Pillai related the
Dewatagaha miracle to him. Sheikh Ali Jabbarooth
Moulana was keen to visit the place. On Friday after
Jummah prayers they made a visit there.

many of whom used once backed the Liberation
Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in varying ways.
“The diaspora has to be realistic in defining a
Tamil political solution,” an EPRLF leader told
IANS on telephone from London. “The time has
come when the politics of negativity has to be
given up.
“Now that the war has ended, people must take a
different approach (towards Tamil political
issues),” he said. “Negative politics pursued by
the LTTE and its supporters will only worsen the
situation.”
The reference was to the still pro-LTTE section of
the Tamil diaspora which continues to propagate
the idea of an independent Tamil Eelam state
to be carved out of Sri Lanka’s northeast.
The EPRLF was once a militant group which
later presided over the provincial
administration in Sri Lanka’s northeast when
the Indian troops were deployed in the region
in 1987-90.
The LTTE gunned down the EPRLF leadership
in India’s Chennai city in 1990. Since then, the
EPRLF has limped on. It has a member in the
eastern provincial assembly but is otherwise a
pale shadow of its former self.
But the EPRLF has teamed up with several
similar Tamil groups and activists now to form
what is known as “Tamil Arangam” - a grouping
that seeks a better political deal for the Tamils
within Sri Lanka.
Forty delegates from Sri Lanka, France,
Britain, Switzerland and Germany gathered in
Paris for the October 23-24 meeting that
debated the situation in Sri Lanka and the vast
Tamil diaspora community.
The Paris meet felt that the LTTE’s end was a
blessing in disguise for the Tamils.
“If the war had not ended, it would have only
caused more deaths and destruction,” said the
EPRLF leader, providing a gist of the
discussions.
The Tamil separatist campaign spearheaded
by the LTTE claimed around 90,000 lives from
1983 till 2009, becoming one of the bloodiest
sectarian conflicts in modern history.

A key speaker in Paris was Annamali Varadaraja

Perumal is playing a major role in the revival of

In recent months, the EPRLF has held 70-80

Bank had proposed to the government to
incorporate the proposal to establish the EXIM
Bank in the budget 2011.“We have drafted the
legislation for the EXIM Bank to be established
with an initial capital of US$ 200 million. The
Central Bank is ready to set up the bank as soon
as the government gave the green light,” Mr.
Samarasiri told the Daily Mirror. The EXIM Bank
will act as the principal government agency
responsible for aiding the export of goods and
service and thereby creating and sustaining the
country’s foreign trade and investment through a
variety of loans, guarantee programs and
coordinating the financial institutions engaging in
such activities. The EXIM Bank can be
established under any of the Company Act,
Banking Act or a Parliament Act.
The capital of the EXIM Bank shall be contributed
by the government, Central Bank, Commercial

Sanga excited with performances of young players
Rex Clementine reporting from Perth
(island.lk) Following Sri Lanka's convincing win in the
T-20 International against Australia in Perth on
Sunday that enabled the tourists to record their first
win against Australia in Perth, captain Kumar
Sangakkara said he was excited by the enthusiasm
shown by the young players of his squad and was
more than satisfied with their performances in a place
considered toughest to play cricket.
Off-spinner Suraj Randiv continued to impress after
he picked up a wicket off his first ball in Australia and
then finished with three for 25 to win the Man of the
Match award while Thisara Perera, considered the
weak link of the Sri Lankan attack, ended as the most
economical of Sri Lankan bowlers after he finished
with two for 22 in his four overs. Perera then finished
things in style when he smashed 17 runs in just four
balls hitting two sixes and a four.
"They were exceptional," Sangakkara said at the post
match media conference. "That's what we expect
from everyone in the side whether they are young or
whether they are more experienced players.
Everyone has to contribute for the side to do well."
"It's great to have these guys on performance. They
are not here because they are talented or have
potential. They are here because they have
converted their potential into performance with the 'A'
side and first class cricket. They seem to prove
themselves every time they go out to play,"
Sangakkara added.
The Sri Lankans got off to a good start by reducing
the hosts to 43 for five and the early pressure
inserted by the bowlers helped them in the
convincing win.
"It's very encouraging to see how the bowlers
performed. Dilhara bowled a good first over and from
then on we targeted a few wickets in the first ten
overs and (I am) pretty happy with the way things
went for us today," he added.
This was Australia's first defeat in T-20 cricket at
home and a disappointing way to start the summer
especially with the Ashes series around the corner.
"It's always nice to win especially away from home
and to beat the Australians in Australia is even
better," Sangakkara went onto say.
The Sri Lankans arrived in Australia two weeks prior
to the series and were involved in some intense
training and they were happy with the preparation
they have put in ahead of a tough series as the
tourists search for their maiden series win here.
"We have practised a lot. It would have been good
had we got that game in Sydney going, but
unfortunately it rained out. The facilities here have
been excellent and the guys have enjoyed every bit
of it. We have spent enough time away from cricket
to keep ourselves fresh, but also prepared well."
Top rugby playing nations vie for Carlton Cup
yesterday said that the tournament has got the
blessings of the International Rugby Board and the
Asian Rugby Union. This was made possible after
last year’s successful completion of the tournament.
Last year the tournament was a huge success and
the rugby playing nations have come out with high
commendation for the Sri Lanka Rugby Football
Union (SLRFU) for the well conducted tourney.
This year the tournament has attracted 16 teams
from all parts of the world especially the teams from
New Zealand, Australia, South
Africa, Spain and Germany
while Aisa’s top ranked teams
Korea, Japan, China, Chinese
Taipei and Malaysia along with
last year’s winners Fiji.
Simpkin also said that the
African country Kenya is a
notable entry for the tourney.

was in the sporting map at all

strides in the field rugby in the
recent past. Their performance

It's time to get ready for the festive season and as
all Sri Lankans know Milk Rice is the most
traditional dish of them all that takes pride of place
on the table, especially on New Year's Day.
Whatever the occasion, Milk Rice is served to give
the event a cultural and religious taste. After
preparation the rice is spread on an oval shaped
dish and cut into diamond shapes pieces. Apart
from the above mentioned dishes milk rice is
lovely with jaggery as well.

Malinga saved the day.
They built on the solid work of Thisara Perera,
whose 5 for 46 included three quick wickets that
gave the visitors an early look at Australia's lower
middle order, until Michael Hussey set up camp to
guide Australia to the 50th over. Hussey entered
the match fresh from 0 and 3 in a Sheffield Shield
game and he was facing questions over his place
in the Test side.
His limited-overs value has not been in doubt, and
he ticked the score along well in a 67-run stand

6 position and was caught behind off Suraj Randiv
for 31. Hussey's only boundary came from his 71st
delivery and it was the ball that brought up his halfcentury, a strong pull over square leg off
Kulasekara.
His unbeaten 71 was unattractive but effective; he
struck only one boundary along with 50 singles,
constructing more picket fences than you'd find in
Melbourne's outer suburbs. In other words, it was a
typical Hussey one-day innings. He'd have liked a
few more boundaries at the death; Australia
needed more throughout their innings.
Smith had already broken a 23.3-over boundaryless streak before he became Perera's fourth
victim, edging behind for 12. Perera secured his
second five-wicket haul in a 13-match ODI career
in the final over, when he bowled John Hastings for
16. By then, Australia had eked out a respectable
total.
Sri Lanka could have chased far fewer, after
Perera burst through Clarke, Brad Haddin and
Cameron White in the space of two overs to leave
Australia at 4 for 88. He halted the momentum
Australia were building through Haddin, and by the
time he bowled White with a terrific legcutter,
Perera was on a hat-trick.
He'd already had Clarke caught behind by a diving
Sangakkara and Haddin wonderfully taken at point,
where Dilshan intercepted a searing cut. In his first
ODI since March, Haddin played some excellent
shots, including a perfectly-placed crunch through
a small gap at cover when he backed away during
Perera's second over.
Haddin finished with 49 and it was a strong return
to the opening role, where the Australians are likely
to use him alongside Shane Watson in the World
Cup. But this day belonged to Mathews and
Malinga, and, fittingly, to Muralitharan.

Hayman returns to Mount after six years
By Bruce Maurice
(dailymirror.lk) After a wait of six years, S.
Thomas’ savoured the fruits of success when
they took the Dr. R.L. Hayman Trophy to
Mount Lavinia beating their arch rivals Royal
College by eight goals to seven in the 19th
Annual Water Polo Encounter that was
worked off at the Police Swimming Complex
on Saturday.
The last Thomian victory was in 2004 under
the stewardship of Lasitha Perera, while
Royal had five wins on the trot from 2005 to
2009 with Yahan Samajeewa leading the
Royalists last year.
In the first ‘leg’ played earlier this week at the
same venue S. Thomas’ won a cliff hanger
by 7- 6. while the second ‘leg’ was drawn
with both sides scoring a goal each.
As in the previous ‘leg’ the game was played
in front of a packed house and in the fifth
minute of the first quarter there came a goal
straight out of the heavens of water polo
when the six foot one inch Thomian skipper
and left bar Chanuka Perera collected the
ball, rifled his shot past a bewildered Royal
custodian Praneeth Samarajeewa and
turned for the rapturous embraces of his
team mates.
Having tasted Blue and Gold blood, the
Thomians were now thirsting for more. But
this was not to be as the Royal keeper made
amends for his earlier lapse by pulling off
some magnificent saves and the first quarter
ended with the score board advertising the
fact that the score was 1-0 in favour of S.
Thomas’.
The second quarter had hardly started when
in the very first minute, Royal drew level
when 17 year old right bar Shan Lakshitha
catapulted the ball to beat Thomian goalie
and make it one all.
In the opening quarter of the second half,
both sides made valiant attempts to cross
the others’ line, but it was the superb
keeping by both goalies that prevented either
side from scoring and the quarter ended with
the score unchanged.
The third and final quarter was a repeat of
the previous one with the seconds ticking
away and blood pressures rising both among
the players and supporters of both teams.
And when the final blast was blown the score
was level at one all. Having won the first
‘leg’7-6, S. Thomas’ laid their hands on the
Hayman Trophy and Thomian joy was
unconfined.
Thomian goal keeper Arjun De Alwis was
adjudged the most valuable player and was
awarded the Royal College Group of 1992
Challenge Trophy though Royal’s custodian
Praneeth Samaajeewa was not very far
behind.

But Sangakkara’s side achieved that feat
yesterday and went onto inflict Australia’s
first defeat in T-20 cricket at home against
any team.
The in-form tourists put up a disciplined
effort yesterday as they restricted Australia
for 133 and chased the target with 21 balls
and seven wickets to spare.

Lanka picked two specialist spinners in their side
for yesterday’s game.
Dilhara Fernando put the Sri Lankans on top
removing David Warner early and then took a
superb one-handed catch back peddling from midon to send Michael Clarke on his way.
Suraj Randiv continued to impress at international
stage picking up a wicket off his first ball in
first time.
All teams will not have all the best
players but these countries will play the
top sevens players as they want to carry
away the glittering trophy .
SLRFU Vice President Lasitha
Guneratne said that for the first time the
organizers will be giving lavish cash
awards amounting to 25,000 dollars to
the winner, 15,000 to the runners-up and
5,000 dollars each to the two semifinalists. This was made possible mainly
Australia when he removed David Hussey caught
behind for seven.
At 43 for five after ten overs, Australia were in deep
trouble, but a 66-run stand between wicket-keeper
Brad Haddin and all-rounder Steve Smith rescued
them as they went on to post 133.
Randiv was the pick of the bowlers finishing with
three for 25 in his four
overs while his senior spinning partner Muttiah
Muralitharan conceded 31 runs in four overs
without taking a wicket.
Thisara Perera, the weak link of the Sri Lankan
attack was the most economical conceding just 22
runs in his four overs and picked up two wickets as
well.
