Welcome to the Old Fire Station What’s On!
Our autumn programme includes events to suit all tastes. In addition to
headline acts, the Old Fire Station will also play host to local bands and
performers. Local artists will also be showcased in our exhibition area within

Black is the Colour of My Voice
Tuesday 8 September 7.30pm (doors open at 6.30pm)
£12 (adult) and £10 (OAP and under 16)* Suitable for age 12+
Inspired by the life of Nina Simone, the show
follows a jazz musician and civil rights activist
called Mena Bordeaux as she undergoes a
spiritual cleansing following the untimely death
of her father.
Highlights North presents Every Brilliant Thing
Monday 14 September 7.30pm (doors open at 6.30pm)
£10* Suitable for age 14+
A comedy about depression! Following its humble
beginnings at the Ludlow Fringe Festival in 2013,
Every Brilliant Thing went on to complete a short
UK tour and a critically acclaimed run at the
Edinburgh Fringe.
Dickens Abridged
Sunday 27 September 8pm (doors open at 7pm) £15* By Adam Long (co-founder of The Reduced
Shakespeare Company), Dickens Abridged is
a high-speed comic journey through Dickens’
greatest hits. A mash-up of California and
Dickens - the Grateful Dead meets the Ghost
of Christmas Past, with a touch of the Marx
Brothers thrown in for good measure.

Written by Maxine Peake, Beryl celebrates the extraordinary sporting achievements of Morley cyclist
Beryl Burton. Five times world pursuit champion, thirteen
times national champion, twice road-racing world champion and twelve times national champion, Beryl Burton was one of the most astonishing sports people
ever to have lived.

Can the twins save the school from the child-eating troll?
Can they get Brussels sprouts in peanut butter taken
off the menu? And most importantly, can naughtiness
prevail? Be outrageously entertained in this colourfully
comic show from the writer of award-winning West
End hit Matilda The Musical. For ages 7+ and their
accompanying trolls (or parents).

Wednesday 4 November 7pm (doors open at 6.15pm)

Join Saikat dance precariously through his dualidentity childhood, torn between the familiar sights of
Birmingham and the mysteries of Bangladesh. Meet
werewolves in the playground, nuns in the corridors and
tangerines in the dancehall. The play takes a humorous
look at what it means to be British from someone who
had to learn the hard way.

The science comedy phenomenon returns with
“Just For Graphs”, an all-new graph-a-minute
show from stand-up mathematician Matt Parker,
experiments maestro Steve Mould and geek
songstress Helen Arney. ‘The nerd show to end
all nerd shows.’ (The List).
A Christmas Carol

Classic family festive slapstick brought by Three Half
Pints. The Comedy Club 4 Kids veterans will soon be
stars of their very own CBeebies series. Lots of silliness
and great family fun!

A brand new festive-themed comedy full of twists,
turns and surprises. Join Joshua for a spot of

they’ve supported the Buzzcocks,

The View

A Scottish indie rock band; they
incorporate various styles such as
punk, pop, alternative rock, pop
punk, powerpop and folk in their
music. They are best known for their
2007 single “Same Jeans” which
reached number three on the UK
Singles Chart.
Mark Chadwick (The Levellers)
Friday 9 October 8pm (doors open at 7pm) £10*
The band shares a collective love
of melody, harmony, psychedelia
and country. The band are currently
recording new songs for their
forthcoming album and booking gigs
throughout the country.
One of the UK’s most successful songwriters, Mark
Chadwick has co-written 20 chart singles and six top 40
albums (including a number one) as part of The Levellers,
the band he has fronted for over 20 years.
The Sherlocks
Sunday 13 September 8pm (doors open at 7pm) £10*
A four piece band from Sheffield,
their music is often described as
‘upbeat’ and ‘bodacious’, with
‘thrashing vocals’ and ‘rhythmic
guitars’. They have been support to
bands such as Twisted Wheel, The
Buzzcocks, Reverend & The Makers,
The Enemy, Scouting for Girls and
Simple Minds.

Tijuna Bibles
Thursday 15 October 8pm (doors open at 7pm) £6*
Born and bred in Glasgow, but with
more in common with the swampy
blues of Louisiana, Tijuna Bibles are
a mix of grungy sludge-based riffs
and groove-laden rthymns.

brightest talents. A gifted trumpeter
with a beautiful, expressive tone,
his music draws on his love of the
transcendental, spiritual and modal
jazz of Alice and John Coltrane and

Skip ‘Little Axe’ McDonald and King Size Slim

Skip McDonald made his name as an integral
part of the Sugar Hill house band playing on
the most influential early rap classics, as part
of Adrian Sherwood’s On-U Sound crew. He
has made some of the most adventurous and
acclaimed UK music of the last twenty years.
Root Music presents Lau
Sunday 29 November 8pm (doors open at 7pm) £16*
Expect a show-stopping night as the Old Fire
Station hosts what could easily be the most
thrilling concert of the year. Crowned Best Folk
Group at the BBC Radio Two Folk Awards an
incredible four times, Lau are widely regarded
as one of the UK’s most inventive bands whose
dazzling performances have captivated audiences
across the world.
Soul City Walkers
Friday 18 December

One of the few, true soul and funk bands in the
North of England. Soul City Walkers feature a
punchy horn section, keyboards, bass, guitar and
drums. Put your party shoes on and be prepared
to dance all night.

The multi-award winning comedian will take to
the stage with his new show, Mumbo Jumbo. In
a series of anecdotes and tales, Sean talks about
his lifelong battle to stay on the right side of sanity,
where common sense battles daily against mumbo

From the bittersweet to the rude and raunchy,
Scotland’s Makar, Liz Lochhead weaves a
spellbinding and beguiling show, mixing poems,
monologues and music. Accompanied by the soulful
sax of Steve Kettley she presents an intoxicating mix
of some of her best work over the past 45 years.
Timings: Doors open between 30 minutes and an hour before each event.
Seating is unreserved. Under 16s attending events must be accompanied by an adult.
Refunds: Tickets cannot be exchanged or refunded unless an event is

A new book of poems by Roger McGough is
always an event and As Far As I Know is truly a
cause for celebration. Hilarious and surreal, he is
a poet of many voices. Menace and melancholy
there may be, but with plenty of McGough’s
characteristic wit and wordplay too.
