President’s Message - August, 2015
Your Pres. is recuperating from a minor bladder cancer procedure
AND is visiting old haunts as well as relatives in the Chicago area. A
favorite is the Indiana Dunes. The beach pic was taken in the
Dunes. Three miles to west of this spot are the Gary steel mills and
three miles to east is a nuclear power plant.

New ski-trip to Park City/Canyons in Jan, 2016?
At the instigation of some FSC members, Joe Golden is soliciting expressions of interest from FSC
members who might be interested in a new 3-4 night trip to Park City/Canyons UT(soon to be the largest
ski-area in U.S., surpassing Vail) in late Jan. 2016. Those of us who have any of the Vail Epic passes can
ski free there, and others can get discounts. We would carpool/drive and rent a large house nearby with
full kitchen for group meals, and costs would kept low. Please contact Joe if you are interested, we need a
min of 15-25 for the trip to happen.

TUESDAY NIGHT HIKES – August, 2015
Hikes begin at 6 pm at the designated trailhead or meeting place and provide a chance for
exercise and fun with other club members and visitors, as well as a delicious potluck dinner after
the hike. Bring your paper plate, plasticware (always bring these even if we go to someone’s
home after the hike), water bottle, and a dish to share. All hikes are approx. 2-3 miles (1 to
1-1/2hrs). In case of rain or high wind potluck may still take place at someone’s house. Contacts:

Aug 4 – Gross Reservoir Note - 5:30 PM Start Time Monica Tremblay
Go West on Baseline Rd past Chautauqua. The road turns into Flagstaff Rd once you cross the stone bridge. Go a little less
than 9 miles where you will see a small green sign on the right that says “State Hwy 72” and a white sign on the left to “Gross
Reservoir”. Turn left at this sign onto a dirt road and turn right into the parking lot. This road is about 1.5 miles past Walker
Ranch. If you see the green 9 mile marker on the right, you've gone too far. We will hike down to and along the reservoir before
having our potluck at the picnic tables by the parking lot.
AUGUST 11 – S Mesa Trail

Meet at South Mesa Trailhead parking lot off Eldorado Springs Road. Go South on Broadway, turn Rt on Eldorado Springs Rd
off 93. Go downhill about 2 miles to parking lot on the right. Potluck at trailhead picnic tables.
AUGUST 18 – Chautauqua

Meet at Chautauqua picnic shelter behind auditorium. Directions: Baseline West to 12th Street, turn Left (South) and proceed up
hill to shelter. We will hike the meadow and then picnic at the shelter afterwards.
AUGUST 25 – Bike/walk AnthemTrails

Meet at Buffalo Ridge Medical Center parking lot (no restroom available so stop in Lafayette). Directions – go East on Baseline/
CO7 for approx. 3.5 miles from US287 in Lafayette. Turn right at Lowell traffic light and the Medical Center is on the right. There
is usually a traffic jam on CO7 at 5.30 pm so come early or try a different route (Arapahoe to County Line Rd or South Boulder to
120th). Pot luck after bike/hike at Stewart and Nancy’s home, 1834 Vista Ridge. Return to Baseline and continue East to light at
Mountain View Blvd – turn left and drive 0.7 miles (one long curvy block past school and swimming pool). Turn right onto Pine
Street and 1834 is on right.
Safety Reminder: Mosquitos carry the West Nile virus in Boulder County. When out at dusk, take precautions long pants, long sleeves, DEET insect repellant on exposed skin. Be safe.
GUIDELINES FOR TUESDAY EVENING HIKES
These are social hikes for everybody to enjoy! Starting time is 6 pm at the designated trail head. All participants will sign the
Roster and the leader will take a head count. The group will wait for a maximum of 10 minutes for an expected latecomer. Hike
leader will set a time to be back for potluck meal. Group will pause after 15 minutes hiking to determine if there are slower hikers
who will then be advised to hike another 15 or 20 minutes and then return the same way to be back in time for dinner. There
should NOT be FEWER than 3 people separating from the group (if one gets hurt, one can go for help and the 3rd stay with the
injured hiker). Everyone's safety if a priority!
10th Mountain Hut Trip
Wed. Aug. 12- Fri. Aug. 14 & Tue. Aug. 18-Thur. Aug. 20
The Flatirons Ski Club always rents 2 nights in a 10th Mt.
Div. Hut during August. This year we are going back to
probably the best hut, Fowler-Hilliard above old Camp
Hale west of Vail. The cost for a hut bed and 4 meals is
$70. Both trips are full but there is a very short Waiting
List on either hut trip so your chances are good to join the

Summer 2015 Wildflower Rambles
Monday, August 3 Butler Gulch Leaders: Claudia VanWie and Peter Divine One of our favorite tundra
wildflower locales. This trail is described as a “wildflower viewer’s dream” by Pamela Irwin in her book Colorado’s
Best Wildflower Hikes, Volume 1: Front Range. Up to 100 species grow there at the peak of the blooming season
– which should be close to this date. Meet at 8:00 AM at the Marshall Mesa Park & Ride – CO 93 @ Eldorado Rd.
Butler Gulch Trail is rated moderate to strenuous. The total length is 2.5 miles each way with an elevation gain of
approximately 1,200 feet. Participants can go as far as they wish. If you use hiking poles, bring them on this trip. We will be
hiking our way toward the meadow at treeline in the beginning to get to the best wildflower concentration, lunch at the old mine
site and take our time on the return for identifications and pictures. Plan on a full day event. Carpool fee $12.00.
Friday, September 25 White Rocks 2:00 – 5:00 PM Leader: Linda Paris OSMP’s Dave Sutherland will present a program
for FSC at the recently acquired White Rocks Preserve on 75th St. near Boulder Creek, including the unique biological and
geological features of this site, its preservation history, and the impacts from the 2014 flood. Participation is strictly limited
to 15 people and advance registration with Linda Paris is required to participate. E-mail Linda with your request. A
waiting list beyond the 15-person limit will be taken.
Slow-Cooker Enchiladas
Recipe from Taste of Home
Ingredients
Preparation
1 pound ground beef
1 cup chopped onion
½ cup chopped green pepper
1 can (16 ounces) pinto or kidney beans, rinsed and drained
1 can (15 ounces) black beans, rinsed and drained
1 can (10 ounces) diced tomatoes and green chilies, undrained
1/3 cup water
1 tsp. chili powder
½ tsp. ground cumin
½ tsp. salt
¼ tsp. pepper
1 cup (4 ounces) shredded sharp cheddar cheese
1 cup (4 ounces) shredded Monterey Jack cheese
6 flour tortillas (6 or 7 inches)
1.
In a skillet, cook beef, onion and green pepper until
beef is browned and vegetables are tender. Drain.
2.
Add the next eight ingredients, bring to a boil. Reduce
heat, cover and simmer for 10 minutes.
3.
Combine cheeses.
4.
In a 5-qt. slow cooker, layer about ¾ cup beef mixture,
one tortilla and about 1/3 cup cheese. Repeat layers.
5.
Cover and cook on low for 5-7 hours or until heated
through.
Yield: 4 servings.

FALL ELK BUGLING
Join us for our annual elk bugling trip to Rocky Mountain National Park on Wednesday,
September 23 with leaders Chris and Linda Paris. We are planning to view elk and
hike on the Cub Lake and Fern Lake Trails making a loop with a hiking distance of
approximately 6 miles. There is no limit on participation numbers. A 4 PM post-watch
dinner is available for those who wish to participate at Mama Rosa’s in Estes Park. You
can view a menu for Mama Rosa’s at http://mamarosesrestaurant.com/. Please
contact Linda and Chris by Saturday, September 19 (e-mail or phone preferable) if
you are coming and to let us know if you staying for dinner, so we can make
reservations. Bring lunch/snack for midday and money to cover the cost of dinner and
carpool. Binoculars are helpful for elk watching. If you have a park pass, please bring it along for the RMNP entrance. Meet to
carpool at 3 Margaritas in Diagonal Plaza), 28th and Iris, at 9:00 AM. Carpool fee is $9.00.
FSC Friday Afternoon Club (FAC) New Participants Welcome
FSC Friday FAC meets from 4 pm until 5:30 at Rincon del Sol, 2350 Arapahoe. It is on the South Side of
Arapahoe, just west of gas station at SW corner Folsom & Arapahoe, and good parking is on the West
side. Has good Happy Hour prices and food. FSC meets in the large west-side room.

Canoe Trip
28 Flatirons members and guests enjoyed a great weekend canoeing the Colorado River near Moab and visiting the rock
formations in Arches National Park and the canyon views in Canyonlands National Park. Due to a cloud burst the night before the
rivers was running very high. The high water covered most of the beaches for rest and lunch stops but the speed of the current
reduced the normal paddling. It was another club adventure.
