A film is a collective project
that means nothing without
teamwork. I can effectively
work with a variety of personalities under pressure. I
have the ability to recognize
and communicate humor in
the human experience. In my
role as sports director for TV
West, my hallmark is the fact
that my spots and bridges are
funny. Kids remember them,
and Sports Machine, my segment, has become the most popular portion of the broadcast.
I am most proud of my role as
host because four years ago, I
chose to overcome a stutter that
had infiltrated my speech pattern. The stutter was elevated
during times of excitement and
nervousness. As an active participant in theater and public
speaking, it became clear I had
to either choose to accept it and
lose a passion or fight it and
continue to do what I love.

My ultimate goal is to become
a wife and mother of a wonderful family. My participation
in this category has greatly
increased my knowledge and
abilities in cooking, interior
design and money management. As a mother, I know that
I will be able to cook healthy
meals and bake delicious treats
for my children. I will be able
to prevent underage drinking
by having family dinners and
talking with my kids. With
my sewing skills, I’ll be able to
sew costumes for school plays,
make Easter and Christmas
dresses for my little girls, darn
socks and sew personalized
clothes that are unique. When
I have a home, I will have the
skills necessary to make it a
comfortable and cozy place. I’ll
be able to furnish rooms and
paint the walls using my interior design knowledge. All the
FACS classes have prepared
me for an exciting, fulfilling
future.

The most meaningful
challenges I’ve faced have
been close, confidential and
personal. I’ve been to the
hospital after a personal
acquaintance was badly
beaten by an abusive husband and left with partial
paralysis. It affected me
beyond words. Life-altering
autoimmune illnesses run
in my family, and I’ve quietly dealt with my own health
challenges. Yet, when faced
with problems, I’ve discovered solutions. Instead of
focusing on losses, I found
doing my best and serving
others brings great joy.
I’ve become an advocate for
battered women, the homeless, children in foster care,
at-risk youth and those with
special needs in America
and throughout the world.

The transition from high
school biology to working in a
college laboratory is a little like
jumping into the deep end after
half of a lesson in the kiddy
pool. I imagine the initial
emotions of panic are pretty
similar. In my research with
BYU, I am testing the effects
of tetradecanoic fatty acid on
the process of sporulation in
Clostridium difficile and using
phase-contrast microscopy to
measure inhibition. Welcome
to the deep end.
Science requires innovation, quick thinking, creativity and an ability to rebound
after failures. The creativity
necessary in seeing dilemmas
from different angles makes
solutions fresh and inventive.
When faced with failure, the
ability to bounce back and
start the whole process over is
what defines excellence.
AWARD: This award is given
jointly by the governor’s office
and Deseret News/KSL 5
Television to an outstanding
Sterling Scholar in science.
Named after the father of
TV, Philo T. Farnsworth. The
award includes a statuette of
Farnsworth. The award also includes $400 from the Deseret
News and KSL 5 Television.
