Directions to Watkins Glen (10 miles from Farm Sanctuary)
Take a right out of the driveway onto Aikens Road. Follow Aikens Road to the end. Take a right onto
Route 23. Follow Route 23 to the end. Take a left onto Route 409. Route 409 will take you into
Watkins Glen. At the stop light, a right or left turn will put you on Franklin Street, the main street in
Watkins Glen.
Directions to Ithaca (35 miles from Farm Sanctuary)
From Farm Sanctuary, turn right onto Aikens Road and follow two miles to stop sign. Turn right onto C.R.
23 and follow seven miles to stop sign. Turn left at stop sign onto S.R. 409. Take S.R. 409 into Watkins
Glen and continue straight onto 4th Street. Take 4th Street east out of Watkins Glen for two miles and
continue straight onto S.R. 79. Turn right at stop light in Burdett. Continue 4.5 miles and turn right at S.R.
79/227 juncture to stay on S.R. 79, watch for signs. Continue on S.R. 79 for 14 miles to Ithaca.
Parks and Scenic Attractions
Buttermilk Falls State Park – S.R. 13, two miles south of Ithaca. 607-273-5761. Beautiful falls and gorge
trail. Offers cabins, camping sites, picnic area, and swimming.
Clute Park – 4th Street, one mile east of downtown Watkins Glen. 607-535-4438. Scenic park on Seneca
Lake in Watkins Glen offers picnicking, barbeques, camping, swimming, volleyball nets, skate park, and
playground.
Cornell Plantations – 124 Comstock Drive, Ithaca. 607-255-2400. An area of great natural beauty and
serenity. When you visit, make your first stop the Nevin Welcome Center, an award-winning “green”
building.
Finger Lakes National Forest – Lies on a ridge called the backbone between Seneca and Cayuga Lakes in
the Finger Lakes region. New York State’s only national forest with over 30 miles of interconnecting trails
that traverse gorges, ravines, pastures, and woodlands. For maps and information, visit the Hector Ranger

Havana Glen – One mile south of Montour Falls on Havana Glen Road off S.R. 14 (three miles south of
Watkins Glen). 607-535-9476. Large picnic area with playground and a short hike to Eagle Cliff Falls in
park. Also look for Deckertown Falls a half mile to the north.
Sapsucker Woods, Cornell Lab of Ornithology – 159 Sapsucker Woods Rd., Ithaca. 1-800-843-2473.
A 230 acre sanctuary that emcompasses forests, ponds, ferny swamps, and abundant wildlife. Stop in
the Visitor Center for tips on where to go and to borrow a pair of binoculars; join a guided bird walk; or
download a trail map and explore on your own.
Robert H. Treman State Park – S.R. 327, five miles south of Ithaca off S.R. 13. 607-273-3440. Spectacular
gorge trail features 12 waterfalls, including 115-foot Lucifer Falls. Nine miles of hiking trails. Offers
camping, RV spaces, cabins, swimming, and picnic area.
She-Qua-Ga Falls – Picturesque 165-foot falls on West Main Street in downtown Montour Falls (just two
miles south of Watkins Glen). Also look for Aunt Sarah’s Falls along S.R. 14 on the way.
Sugar Hill Fire Tower Park – Tower Hill Road, just 1 mile east of Farm Sanctuary. Hike or drive to this
historic fire tower that still remains standing and accessible to the public. Camp, picnic or climb the
tower for a breathtaking view.
Sugar Hill Recreation Area – 607-776-2165. Twelve thousand acres of beautiful state forest surround
Farm Sanctuary, with rustic camping, picnic areas and miles of hiking trails.
Taughannock Falls State Park – On S.R. 89, eight miles north of Ithaca. From Watkins, take S.R. 79 to S.R.
227 into Trumansburg. Turn right onto S.R. 96 then follow signs. 607-387-6739. The 215-foot falls is one
of the tallest in the eastern U.S. Offers camping, cabins and hiking.
Watkins Glen State Park – South Franklin Street near 10th Street in downtown Watkins Glen. 607535-4511. Famous gorge featuring 19 waterfalls on a two-mile hike; $6 to park or free on city streets.

Shopping
Watkins Glen Visitor Center – 100 N. Franklin St. 607-535-4300. The visitor center offers brochures
and information on hundreds of area attractions and events as well as maps and internet access. Mon
through Sat 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Sun 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Downtown Watkins Glen – Franklin Street features a variety of gift shops, from souvenirs and T-shirts to
racing paraphernalia and antiques.
Ithaca Times – Pick up a copy of the Ithaca Times or visit www.ithaca.com for a list of local events and
activities. You can find a copy of the Ithaca Times at The Ithaca Commons, gas stations, or just about
anywhere in downtown Ithaca.

Ithaca Farmers Market – Take S.R. 13 north from Ithaca, approximately one mile then turn left on 3rd
Street, follow to end. Sat 9 a.m.-3 p.m., Sun 10 a.m.-3 p.m.150 vendors offer local produce, crafts,
vegan meals, and much more!

Museums
Corning Museum of Glass – 1 Museum Way, Corning. 800-732-6845. Explore and interact; glassblowing
demonstrations and make your own glass souvenir. Children 17 and under are free.
Glenn H. Curtiss Museum – 8419 State Rte. 54, Hammondsport. 607-569-2160.Glenn H. Curtis was an
aviation pioneer; he piloted the first officially witness flight in North America and was born in the Finger
Lakes. Features early aviation history, historic aircraft, autos, boats, motorcycles, bicycles and special
events and exhibits.
Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art – 114 Central Ave., Ithaca (on Cornell University campus). 607-2556464. One of the finest collections of art in New York state and recognized as one of the most important
university museums in the country.
Museum of the Earth at the Paleontological Research Institution – 1259 Trumansburg Rd., Ithaca. 607273-6623. Learn about the history of Earth and its life.

Women’s Rights National Historical Park – 136 Fall St., Seneca Falls. 315-568-0024. In 1848, the first
Women’s Rights Convention was held in Seneca Falls, New York. Relive this history at the Women’s
Rights Museum and tour the home of women’s rights pioneer Elizabeth Cady Stanton.
Ithaca Commons – S.R. 79 from Watkins Glen, continue on State Street one mile to Cayuga Street. This
premier pedestrian mall is the emotional and commercial heart of Ithaca, featuring dining, art, shopping,
play areas, and events.

Seneca Lake Wine Trail – From Watkins Glen take S.R. 14 north for west side wineries, or S.R. 414 north

in the Farm Sanctuary gift shop. Each side of Seneca Lake has more than a dozen wineries with tasting
rooms and gift shops.
Cayuga Lake Wine Trail – More than a dozen wineries surround Cayuga Lake in Ithaca; most are on the
east side of Cayuga Lake along S.R. 89. For information on the Cayuga Lake wine trail, call 800-6845217 or ask for a wine trail brochure and map in the Farm Sanctuary gift shop.
Keuka Lake Wine Trail – Several wineries surrounding Keuka Lake. For information on the Keuka Lake
