Monsignor’s Message for the Week
4th Sunday of Advent
December 19/20, 2015
Dear Friends,
What a great weekend for the parish last week! On Friday, a crowd of over 250 enjoyed the Christmas tree lighting
and sing-a-long in the Cathedral. Then, at the 9:30 Mass, with the help of some of our younger parishioners,
Archbishop Lori opened the “Jubilee Doors of Mercy” to inaugurate in the Archdiocese the Year of Mercy. The
Archbishop was delighted to see the number of young families at the Mass and I thank them for being present.
Finally, the weekend concluded with our 43rd Annual Advent Lessons and Carols. Many remarked to me how
wonderful the choir sounded. THANKS to everyone who made last weekend so special at our parish.
Congratulations to Diego Buritica, our seminarian from St. Mary’s Seminary, who was ordained a deacon on Saturday in Worchester, Massachusetts. Diego will now be able to preach, baptize, and witness marriages when he
returns in January for his final semester of studies before being ordained a priest in June.
CHRISTMAS is just a few days away! As is the case for most parishes, we will see the largest crowd of the year
for Mass. In a recent survey from the evangelical research agency LifeWay Research, more than three in four
churchgoers (77%), Catholic and Protestant alike said they were drawn to attend church at Christmas to honor Jesus and His birth. Other motives such as tradition, being with family and friends, or getting into the Christmas
spirit were at a distance as motivation for going to church. Even among the “nones” (people with no religious
identity), nearly 30% had plans to go to church and they also named Jesus as their primary motivation. However,
family and friends do make a difference in Christmas church attendance. The survey found that among those
with no plan to attend a church (38%) at Christmas, the vast majority say they would likely go if personally invited. They would go to be with people they care about, even if it weren’t something they would typically choose.
So my challenge for this week:
1.
Personally invite someone to attend Christmas Mass with you who might not otherwise attend. You might be the reason they begin to attend Mass again during this Jubilee Year of Mercy;
2.
Be welcoming and friendly when you come to Mass on Christmas. Even if someone is sitting in
“your” pew, greet them warmly and let them know you are happy they have come to our Cathedral
church to honor Jesus. Kindness in the name of Jesus wins people over – rudeness gives people a
reason not to come back.
Finally, please keep in your prayers the repose of the souls of Lolita Sickler whose Mass of Christian Burial was
celebrated Saturday and Richard Welch whose Mass will be celebrated Monday morning. It’s never easy to give a
loved one back to the Lord, but it is especially hard to suffer a loss during this time of the year.
Merry Christmas!

SHARING OUR BLESSINGS
We would like to extend a blessed thank you to all who have participated in our Sharing Our Blessings stewardship program. This kind generosity is a positive response that our parishioners are willing to share a portion of their blessings to ensure all the pastoral positions that are essential to provide the quality programs and ministries that a parish of the Cathedral’s
caliber needs to flourish and grow. So, if you have not yet returned your commitment card, please try to do so next weekend
or return it to the parish office this week. Your response will be greatly appreciated.
EVANGELIZATION
“Year of Mercy” (Flocknote)
The Wisdom of Hunger & Thirsting
The Lord then goes on to say: ‘Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.’ This hunger is not for any bodily food, this thirst is not for any earthly drink: it is a longing to be blessed with righteousness, and by
penetrating the secret of all mysteries, to be filled with the Lord himself.” ~ St. Anthony of Padua
For what do you hunger and thirst? Read the Beatitudes at Matthew 5: 3-12.
At every celebration of Evening Prayer, the Magnificat is sung or recited. As with the psalms, there is an antiphon that
is paired with the Magnificat each day in order to highlight some aspect of the text and the particular celebration of
the day. For the period from December 17 to December 23, the antiphons for the Magnificat are known as the “O antiphons” because each one begins with the interjection “O.”
Each antiphon uses a title for the Messiah and refers to a prophecy of Isaiah. In order of use approaching Christmas, they
are: O Sapientia, O Adonai, O Radix Jesse, O Clavis David, O Oriens, O Rex Gentium, O Emmanuel, or in English, O Wisdom, O
Lord, O Root of Jesse, O Key of David, O Morning Star, O King of the nations, O Emmanuel. Five of these antiphons were adapted
into a metrical hymn for the 1710 publication Psalteriolum Cantionum Catholicarum. A two-line refrain was also added at the end
of each verse, but no melody was given for the text.
John Mason Neale translated the strophic text into English and included it in his 1851 collection Mediæval Hymns and Sequences. The text was revised and paired with a melody for The Hymnal Noted published later in 1851. It was revised again in 1861
for inclusion in Hymns Ancient and Modern, and it is this version that has become probably the most well known Advent hymn
“O Come, O Come, Emmanuel.”
While the “O Antiphons” are paired with the Magnificat at Evening Prayer, at Mass this weekend, we will have the opportunity to sing both the “O Antiphons” and the Magnificat as they have been adapted through translation and tradition
through the years. Our entrance hymn will be “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel,” and during Communion, we will sing a setting of the Magnificat.
Happy Advent,

ADOPT-A-FAMILY 2015
Adopt A Family Thanks You! Another spectacular Christmas season of giving has wrapped up for our Sister
Parish, Immaculate Conception. Over 150 Cathedral families and friends provided Christmas dinner and gifts
to 116 Families (640 people) and donated over $6,600 in cash and gift cards for outreach to the Immaculate
Conception Community in an extraordinary show of true Christmas Spirit in service to the poor among
us. This awesome display of generosity and solidarity is what this season is all about. Thank you so much for
supporting this program and a special thank you to Troop 1000 for acting as our elves in providing the delivery
to Immaculate Conception. See you next year!
CATHEDRAL KNITS
As we enter the colder months of winter, we are so pleased to introduce Karen Martin as the new leader of the
Cathedral Knits program. Karen has been a member of Cathedral parish for almost 27 years and her interest in
knitting started right around the time her oldest daughter was born. She admits that she must have more balls of
yarn than finished projects, but she has never lost her passion for knitting or collecting skeins of brightly colored yarn. She would ask anyone interested in learning how to knit and or interested in completing a small knit
square for a blanket, or a scarf, or socks for the homeless, to get in touch with her via email
at [email protected] She is happy to share free knitting patterns and a schedule of meeting times for
knitting classes.
THE RESOURCE EXCHANGE PROGRAM AT ST. VINCENT DE PAUL CHURCH
The Resource Exchange is a program of the Social Action Committee at St. Vincent de Paul Church. We place

BE MISSIONARY DISCIPLES
Archbishop Lori is challenging every parish to develop a pastoral plan rooted in the Church’s fundamental mission of Evangelization –
inviting people to a deeper relationship with Jesus and the Gospel. In January 2015, the Archbishop laid out the fundamental principles
that would guide pastoral planning in the Archdiocese of Baltimore, “Be Missionary Disciples.”
In preparation for each parish to develop a pastoral plan by September 2016, the Archbishop is asking every adult Catholic to do two
things:
1. Read his pastoral letter “A Light Brightly Visible” (30 minutes).
2. Take an online survey based on the themes/vision in the pastoral letter (15 minutes). The results of the
survey will be returned to each parish for use in developing its plan. Both may be found online at
www.bemissionarydisciples.org. Links to this site are posted on our new parish website.
