he city of Bilbao has undergone
a huge transformation in the last
15 years. Had you mentioned you were
visiting the city back in 1996, people
would have looked at you in shock.
‘El Boxto’ or the Hole, as Bilbao was
known, was one of the least glamorous
holiday destinations in the world. Now,
thanks to a facelift via the architectural
marvel that is the Guggenheim Museum,
Bilbao is one of the most visited places
in Spain.
The ‘Bilbao Effect’ has seen the city
attract many top architects who have
virtually redesigned large parts of
the city. Regenerated, Bilbao now boasts
plenty of Michelin-starred restaurants
and a lively nightlife, alongside luxury
hotels and high-end shopping.

You’ll struggle to read any article or
guidebook on Bilbao that doesn’t include at
least a passing reference to the Guggenheim
Museum; that is, unless it pre-dates 1997.
Since then, Frank Gehry’s masterpiece has
attracted hordes of tourists to the Basque
country. Shaped like a gigantic ship, a whale
or even Marilyn Monroe’s skirt in The Seven
Year Itch (depending on the observer), the
Guggenheim is recognized as one of the most
important modern architectural buildings.
Inside, the museum is equally impressive
with works from some of the 20th and 21st
century’s finest artists, including Picasso and
Andy Warhol.

The city of San Sebastian is just a tantalizingly
short journey away from Bilbao. Famed for its
beautiful beaches and gourmet restaurant
scene, the city is a popular summer retreat for
the beautiful people of Spain. La Concha,
a glimmering carpet of sand is the city’s

Daniel García, Zortziko regularly ranks as one of the
finest restaurants in the Basque country. Bearer of a
Michelin star and popular with critics, the restaurant
offers traditional Basque cuisine, including local
favorites such as Roast Baby Squid with Peppers
and Scallops on a bed of Tomato Carpaccio.
Zortziko offers three different dining rooms;
one has a Versailles feel to it, another is English
influenced, while the third has a more contemporary,
laid-back vibe. The best option, however, is to dine

The Basque country is world famous for its wines, from the traditional
aged varieties of the Rioja Alta and the bold fruity wines from the Rioja
Alavesa, to the very dry white Txakoli. Much of the countryside around
Bilbao is made up of vineyards and wineries, and Tenedor Tours will take

First day – In the morning, visit the fabulous

seven streets, the oldest part of the neighborhood, feature many bars
and restaurants packed with laid-back locals. The Mercado de la
Ribera, reputably the largest indoor market in Europe, is adjacent to

The Teatro Arriaga is the cultural center of Bilbao’s nightlife. Opened in
1890, the theater has since been rebuilt due to severe flooding in 1985.
Designed by Joaquín Rucoba and named after Juan Crisóstomo de Arriaga, a
local Spanish composer often dubbed the ‘Spanish Mozart’, the theater also
hosts excellent opera performances. And the building itself is an impressive
piece of architecture; Rucoba took inspiration from the Paris Opera House,
and the façade and polygonal towers are particularly impressive, as is the
resplendent interior.

It’s highly unlikely that you’ll visit another bar that looks like Public Lounge.
Camp, contemporary, neo-Gothic, trendy; call it what you will, but you can never
call it boring. Some of the interior decorations are so unusual they are almost
comical; check out the framed antlers that were found in a local wood or the
‘Showtime’ chair. Décor aside, the bar is a chic affair that attracts Bilbao’s
movers and shakers. During the week the bar serves food but the best nights
are at the weekend when the tables are pushed aside and the music continues

The stylish Yandiola has been making a mark as a restaurant for some
time, thanks to the creativity of head chef Ricardo Perez. Even more

Football is a way of life for many Basques who are passionate about the
game and support their team, Athletic Bilbao with fervor. Athletic Bilbao
is one of only three teams to have competed in the Spanish top division
since it began in 1928, the other two being the mighty Real Madrid
and Barcelona. Uniquely, Athletic Bilbao focuses solely on home-grown
talent, at one time only selecting players from the Basque region to
feature in the team. This ruling has relaxed a little, although Athletic fans
remain fiercely loyal and match day is a major event in Bilbao. The team’s
brand new stadium is being constructed right next to the old San Mamés
Stadium, and is expected to be ready by 2014. Tickets can be purchased
from the stadium and the team usually plays on a Sunday evening,
although some games may be played on a Saturday or Wednesday.

Every year, Bilbao hosts the famous Bar Pintxos Competition. Aimed at
promoting bar top hospitality and providing food fans with a fun-filled

Located north of Bilbao on the Bay of Biscay, Getxo is a small town that
forms part of metropolitan Bilbao. Getxo Marina has a total of 827 berths,
of which five are available for yachts of 18 m (59 ft), the maximum length

Like most regions in Spain, summers in Bilbao
are hot with temperatures averaging between
24C° to 26C°. The Basque country is very popular

around Basque nationalism. Many Bilbao citizens
prefer to be referred to as Basque – not Spanish
