I
went hiking with my son and a group from his school last weekend
and met a very nice lady with a BMW wagon, a stick shift no less.
She happened to notice my E36 M3 and asked me about it. My car
was looking good, having just been washed and she was impressed that
it is a fifteen year old car. As we were talking I asked her if she was in
the BMW CCA, she said that she had heard about the club but asked
“why would I do that, what’s in it for me and isn’t the club full of yuppie blowhards that would just suck the fun out of everything”? Wow!
Talk about a negative view of the BMW driver and by extension our club
members. Groucho Marx once declared that he would never want to
be part of a club that accepted him as a member and that was running
through my mind during our conversation.
I explained that the club and the vast majority its members were not
the stereo-typical BMW owner whose high school year-book caption
might be “most likely to cut you off on their way for a mocha grande
while orchestrating a hostile takeover of the PTA by cell phone”.
I told her that the club hosted a lot of different types of events for the
members. Anything from advanced driving education, racing, technical, social and even a few ladies only events, even social driving events!
I also explained that our club members are an easy going and fun loving
group and that they take part in our events for the friendly atmosphere
as much as the event itself. Some of them don’t even own a BMW. She
asked if I was in the club and I told her that yes, I had been a member
for thirteen years, had made a lot of great friends and really learned a
whole lot more about driving and teaching.
I was grateful for that exchange with someone from outside the club.
It goes to show that even though the club gives back to the community
each year with charitable donations and educates young drivers to help
save lives, the perception of what we have to offer is colored by the bad
behavior of a few.
That’s one reason our Chapter is always looking for opportunities to
be a positive role model to young drivers and people in our communities.
As part of this year’s charitable donations, during our November board
meeting, we voted to approve a $5000 donation to the Red Cross to assist
in recovery efforts for Hurricane Sandy. This storm hit close to home and
many of us have friends who were affected including Boston Bimmer columnist Vic Lucariello who is still without power as I write. We hope that Vic
and everyone is able to get their lives back to normal as soon as possible.
So, will the very nice lady become a member? Well, I’m not sure. I think
I was able to pique her interest with our street survival program and the
parts discounts, but the club certainly isn’t for everyone. For those willing
to give it a try, I know they will find a friendly welcome from you, our
members of the ultimate car club. Tell a friend, pass it on ... ♦

All Boston Chapter BMW CCA Members and Associate Members
are encouraged to vote for the 2013 slate of officers. The Chapter
always offers voting in person at the Fourth Quarter General Meeting. However,
there are two other ways to VOTE for Boston Chapter Officers:

Meet the Candidates
President: Simon Cooper
Treasurer: Jack Woods
Simon has been a member of the
BMW CCA since 1999, but has been
a fan of BMWs since 1981 when
his Dad bought an E12 520i while
serving in the Royal Air Force in
Germany. Simon has been active in
the club’s driving events and has
progressed from student to instructor in both High Performance Driving as well as our
Advanced Driving Safety Skills programs. For the past 3
years he has served as the co-chair of the Driving Committee. He has also served as an appointed and elected
member of the Boston Chapter Board for four years,
most recently as President in 2012. Simon believes that
the Chapter exists for the benefit and enjoyment of all
our members, a group with diverse backgrounds and
interests. He supports the continuation and growth of
the driver education programs and social events, but
would like to increase the diversity of programs and
the number of participants. With your support, he is
looking forward to serving again as president in 2013,
and he would be honored to give back to the club that
has given him great fun and many new friends.

Jack has been a member of Boston
BMW CCA since July of 2003 when
he purchased his first BMW, a 2004
330CICA. After attending a BMW
sponsored driving event, he knew
he needed an Autocross/Track car
to abuse and amuse! So in September of 2003, Jack purchased a 1995
M3 which he ice raced with the Boston Chapter for the
first two winters. Then, in 2004 he attended his first
Advanced Driver Safety School and High Performance
Driving School and got hooked. Jack enjoys the camaraderie and friendships that he has made at track and
social events and has recruited family and friends to
join in the fun. He says he is most impressed with how
knowledgeable members are and how willing they are
to share their expertise, on and off the track. As the
owner of Central Business Solutions, a Bookkeeping,
Accounting, Tax and Payroll practice in Peabody, MA,
Jack is well qualified to serve as Treasurer and sees it
as his chance give back to the Chapter. With your support, he looks forward to working with the board to
help improve the financial management and the general
operations, activities and social aspects of the club.

John is the current Vice President
and Director of Activities and has
been active in the Boston Chapter
since 1989. He served as Chapter
President from 1991-1995, Vice President and Director of Activities from
1989-1990, and again from 1996 to
2012. As Director of Activities in
2012, John has coordinated almost all of the Social/
Technical Events, including: Fun Rallies, Undercarriage
Tech Sessions. Paintless Dent Removal Tech Sessions ,
RI Show & Shine Car Show, many programs hosted by
BMW dealers and independent shops, and the Chapter sponsored Concours. He also organizes the Chapter
General Meetings, for which he consistently recruits
nationally recognized Speakers. John always brings
enthusiasm to the work he does for the Chapter, and
is looking forward to another year as Vice President &
Director of Activities with your support.
Baer is the current Chapter Secretary and has been an active member
in the Boston Chapter since 1999
and BMW CCA since 1993. His current car (and third BMW) is an e46
330i. Since joining the Chapter, he
has been involved in event management and increasing membership
involvement. He co-chaired the autocross registrar position in 2004 and soloed as chair from 2005 to 2007.
Baer brings a wide range of experience to the board
having participated in driving events like Oktoberfest
and special programs in the U.S. and abroad. Baer is
dedicated to the BMW brand and its performance culture. He is an owner of ACE Performance a Tewksbury
based BMW performance and service facility. With
your support he hopes to continue his work and development of the Boston Chapter as the Secretary on the
Board of Directors.
Meet the Candidates
Membership Chair: Eric Kaul
Director: Dan Chadwick
Since Eric took on the role of Membership Chairperson two years ago,
he has been the friendly face and
voice that keeps members coming
back. If you’re in need of guidance,
Eric goes out of his way to connect
you with other members who can
provide assistance. His passion for
match making helps ensure that members have a greater reason to attend and keep coming back to Chapter
events. If you are attending a Boston Chapter event for
the first time, Eric will likely find you before, during
or near the end of the event to introduce you to other
members or to invite you to a post-event meal. Why? Because, it’s his passion to help you experience the greatest
reward membership has to offer – lifelong friendship
with people who share your same interests. With your
support, Eric would like to continue his efforts to drive
more members to chapter events (literally, if needed),
to be the Chapter’s official matchmaker, to recognize
active members for their contributions, organize more
member meet-ups, and to continue to provide members
with a place where everyone knows your name!
Dan has been a Chapter Director
since 2008 and a BMW CCA member since 1999 when he brought
his new M Coupe. At the time, he
didn’t know much about the club,
until a knuckleheaded low-speed
spin made him consider improving
his driving skills. He began enthusiastically attending autocross events, safety schools, and
track events and became hooked on high performance
driving. He advocates for the club’s activities and for
the friendships it fosters. Dan now instructs at driving schools and helps train new instructors. In 2012,
the club tapped Dan’s technical skills to develop Driving Evals, the on-line evaluation, driving logbook, and
student/instructor management system. Launched this
past year, Driving Evals has dramatically increased the
feedback that driving school participants receive, and
has helped the registrars optimize their run group and
student/instructor pairings. All Boston Chapter Driving School participants receive a free drivingevals.com
account.
Director: Larry Barbieri
Larry has been a member of the BMW
CCA and the Boston Chapter since
November of 2002. He was the Chapter Membership Chair from 2007-2010
and has been the advertising director
since 2011. He started his involvement
by attending quarterly meetings and
social events, but got hooked while
attending high performance driving
schools. Today he is a member of the registrar committee,
a high performance driving instructor, an advanced driving skills instructor and a Street Survival instructor. Larry
says the latter is especially rewarding. “Working with new
drivers and watching them gain confidence in their skills
is just fantastic!” Larry has spent a lot of time marketing
the Boston Chapter to other BMW owners and has personally signed up many new members. If elected, Larry will
continue to help increase the number of advertisers in the
Boston Bimmer as well as manage advertising and sponsorships for the Chapter.
Director: Joe Marko
Joe has been a member of BMW
CCA since 1971 and a member of the
Boston Chapter since 1981. He is the
original owner of a 1973 2002tii and
owns a 2002 MINI Cooper S, 2012
MINI Countryman S All4, and a
2008 SMART car (but we won’t talk
about that). He has owned a 1988
M6 (which he misses!), a 1997 Z3 2.8, a 1988 325iX, and
a few X5s. Joe is the owner of HMS Motorsport in Danvers, MA, a longtime supporter of Chapter events. Joe
has served as President, Vice President, Membership
Chair, Director, and Treasurer of the Boston Chapter.
He has been co-chair for Drivers Schools since 2006.
As Treasurer in 2008, Joe implemented a new accounting system, on-line banking and bill-pay and managed
getting the Chapter’s Federal and State tax filings up
to date. Joe also increased the use of on-line payments
for social and track events. With your support, Joe will
continue his work for the Chapter with emphasis on
improving driving and social events. ♦

Membership spotlight:
Retiring Karting chair Dennis Friedman
I
t was around Halloween 2008 when Dennis Friedman*
approached the Boston BMW CCA board of directors
with the idea of restoring a Karting series for the club.
People had mentioned Karting in conversations since I
had gotten involved with the Chapter, and after I became
President, members occasionally asked about the status of
our Karting series. The answer was easy, we did not have
an active program. That situation continued until Dennis
Friedman volunteered. Dennis missed the opportunity to
drive in the Karting series and was willing to step up and
organize a whole new series at the F1 Boston facility.
He approached the board about committing to run
three events starting in 2009 during the winter months to
provide track time, and even more importantly, seat time
for committed drivers. The modest proposal required the
Chapter to commit to a contract with F1 Boston and required the Chapter to accept some risk if we didn’t get
enough participants.
Any concerns the board had about meeting the track minimums was
quickly dispelled when the first event wildly exceeded expectations. Like
it’s outdoor street-car relative – autocross, events sold out quickly and participants became cheerleaders for each of the subsequent events. With
Dennis’s guidance, the series has evolved into a structured championship for both teams and individuals. It has also grown to include
events in the non-snow months on the large outdoor track that allows
significantly longer lap times. The series has been a great success for
the Chapter largely because Dennis has devoted a lot of time and organizational effort to keep the series on track and successful.
For those members who haven’t experienced karting first hand, you
should really give it a try. It is as close to driving a formula car
that you can get without buying a race car. The

books for our driving
season and I have that
Johnny Cash song running through
my head, "I've been everywhere man,
I've been everywhere!”
In conjunction with our friends in the White Mountain and Patroon Chapters we had six driving schools and a club race in multiple states and two
countries.
The best kind of road trips
Ok, New Hampshire, New York and Canada aren't that far, but it still felt
like we were on the road all the time. However, these were the best kind of
road trips, the kind where “fun & learning” were the destination, the goal
and the reward for the time spent getting there. We are also lucky to have
access to some of the most professional and challenging tracks for each of
our High Performance Driving Schools.

Volunteers make it possible
I would like to like to take this opportunity to thank the volunteer staff
who gave up their free time before, during and after the events to make
sure that our students and instructors enjoy their track experience to
the fullest. I had intended to take a group photo of the dozen or so guys
running our events this year, but over the three days of our last event
we never had the opportunity to get us all together at one time. The
team members were always busy instructing students in the classroom
or on the track, or wrenching on cars to get students back on the track.
We will have to try again next year.

I would also like to thank all the student drivers who came out to participate in our Boston Chapter events. Our events are designed to give
students the opportunity to experience driving on a track where they
learn new tools for dealing with challenging driving situations. They
also learn why performance driving needs to stay on the track.
This year we were especially excited to welcome 86 people who tried
track driving for the very first time, taking advantage of our Novice
Discount. We will be doing the Novice Program again next year as well
as offering incentive pricing for multi-day events. If this looks like fun
to you (How could it not?), then keep your eye on the schedule for our
ground school that will be happening in March. Ground school is the
ideal format to get more details about each program and to get your
personal questions about all our driving programs answered. ♦

club will miss his candor and insight about BMW
North America, we feel confident that we will see

W
hat does a BMW club member from Connecticut
and one from Ohio have in common other than
being part of the under 30 contingent? They
were both in New Hampshire for the Route 153 Fun
Rally. It was a chilly morning when Tyler and Elise
from Connecticut in their 2007 335i (and the best sound)
and our Ohio friends Patrick and his sister Katherine
Burke in their 330i arrived at the NH rest stop. Patrick
enjoys autocrossing with the Cleveland chapter. For the
next half hour all sorts of colors and models of BMWs
assembled and their owners huddled around and traded stories. There were two red E30s in mint condition
and beautifully restored.
We caravanned to the Miss Wakefield Diner where
we launched onto picturesque Route 153 and wound
around the beautiful White Mountain region. The
fun rally route was resurrected from a rally John Sullivan had done about 5 years ago. Since he and his
wife Barbara spend a lot of time up there his help and
knowledge of the area was helpful in updating the
questions – thanks John! There were 66 challenging
questions and a beautiful route that our entourage dug
into immediately – with our talented winners achieving
a winning score of 52.
Interesting facts along the way
It was crisp and sunny as we answered questions about
Alaska and 7 Lakes. Did you know that Ralph Waldo
Emerson spent some time up here? Yup, the New
Hampshire version of Walden Pond was Balch Lake. I
guess he had to get away from Walden Pond in Concord to really get back to nature!
For us as
rally meisters some of the fun is the amazing answers to questions.
For instance, we asked how many mailboxes. We got
answers ranging from 8-68. I wouldn’t want to suggest that we might have not written the question well,
because the rally meisters are always right. I think
Eduardo thought of that question – he should stick to
driving s-l-o-w-l-y.
Rally tip: Start out slowly until you get a sense of
the frequency and types of questions. Everyone got
“Where could you get Tomatoes? Tomato Shack and no
one got Livingston’s hideaway. It turns out that there
are two Effington Fire Stations (okay that was my question). Susan and Michael Mangini and several others
said that there was a fireman at the first station directing people to the next one, after he noticed how many
BMW were stopping in front of his Fire Station. We still
got the answer “Smokey the Bear” who was in front of
the station.
Landing at Eagle Mountain House
After about 3 hours including a quick lunch we ended
at the Eagle Mountain House for check in. We only lost
one couple – which we thought was a good sign. It was
gorgeous driving up Carter Notch Road along Jackson
Waterfalls and picturesque views on the right. If you
are in the North Conway area of NH, make sure to take
the time to have a picnic by the falls.
We dined at the White Mountain Hotel & Resort for
a fabulous dinner which was a great opportunity to
share car stories and get to know each other. Getting to
the place was really a BMW driver’s pleasure. Long winding road, dark, changes
on elevation and only 3 miles from North
Conway. A special thanks to Michael and
Susan Mangini for setting up the arrangement for the host hotel at the Red Jacket
Resort and John Sullivan for dinner at the
White Mountain Resort.
And the winners are ...
Third Place went to Kevin and Jane Marzotto. Kevin is an avid autocrosser and
hopefully we have convinced Jane to join
the women’s autocross contingent next
spring. Kevin explained that
the secret to their success was
“due entirely to the efforts of
the navigator, Jane.” He went
on to explain that “Apparently a successful navigator
should be so zonked out on
cold medications that she
neither knows where we’ve
been nor where we’re going,
and also doesn’t care!”
Second place went to Jack
and Maureen Woods with
their e46 convertible. And, first place went
to Michael and Susan Mangini driving a
beautiful M3.
Breakfast in Conway
John Sullivan had planned for us to have
breakfast the next morning at the Red Fox Restaurant,
but it had a fire so we went for option number 2, breakfast at Peaches (1st choice) or Pricilla’s (2nd choice)
What we never counted on was that North Conway is
crowded even after leaf peeping season is over. Peaches
had a 20-30 minutes wait, so a number of us ended at
Pricilla’s. We had a great breakfast and Pricilla told us
that the reason Peaches was so busy was that they have
been in business for over 20 years. Then she laughs and
said that she’s been open for three years, and she hired
the chef from Peaches.
A parting shot and plans for 2013
Sunday morning we all gathered around the Jackson
Covered Bridge for pictures and a few last minute conversations. We lined up all the cars so that you could
see the cars with the Bridge in the background. As we
were lined up, a woman stopped to take a picture of all
the Bimmers in a row.
Since the sun was out and the temperature cooperated, a few cars decide to take the Kancamagus Highway
on the way back. Others decide to go for a hike on one
of the local trails and the rest took Route 16 back.
We’re looking forward to next Spring’s Fun Rally …
we’re thinking Cape Cod! ♦

Winter safety ... are you ready for the weather ahead?

W
inter is coming up so it’s a great time to remind
you about some important winter safety tips
and weather related maintenance issues. Winter is the time when the most important thing about
driving is safety. Below are some points about wheels
and tires to remember before winter arrives.
Air Pressure
Check the air pressure of your tires and your family’s
tires more often. Let’s demolish the myth that you are
protected by the tire pressure monitoring system in
your car. Your warning signal is set to go off when your
tires have lost approximately 25% of their air! That’s
the law, and although it’s a lot safer than it used to be,
it’s not safe enough for me. Why is the TMPS system
so important? Because if the air in your tire is low, you
have reduced braking ability and control. That means
that you will end up being in accidents that could have
been avoided if you’d had more control. It also means
that many accidents that can’t be avoided will be worse.
These are the main reasons for your TMPS. But this
is not good enough for winter with large temperature
changes that can affect your tire pressure. This is why
you need to check your own tire pressure (or have
someone do it for you) throughout the winter. Make
sure your spouses, offspring, and parents have their tire
pressure checked regularly also. Oh, and don’t forget
to have the air pressure in your spare checked. It’s
never fun to find out your spare doesn’t have any air,
but it’s especially frustrating when you have a flat on a
dark winter night.
Tire tread
When your tread gets down to 5/32 nds, you have no
more traction on your tires. If your tire tread is this
low, they can’t grip in the rain, on snow and especially
on ice. No matter what tire type you have (see below),
low tread in winter is dangerous. One of my favorite sayings is “The life of your car is determined by
your car’s engines and its mechanics, but YOUR life
depends on your wheel and tires.” Remember, your
brakes don’t stop your car; they stop your wheels and
tires. And you’re wheels and tires only work when
they’re in good working condition.
Winter wheels do matter
There are lots of people who like to think that the condition of their winter wheels doesn’t matter. They
think nothing of driving on bent or highly corroded
wheels in the winter. These are the same people, for the
most part, who take good care of their summer wheels.
Bent wheels can cause major problems and accidents
whether you use summer and winter tires or just one
set. Once a wheel is bent, if it is not straightened, it is
more vulnerable to cracking. New England drivers are
more likely to bend or crack a wheel in the winter for
several reasons, but the biggest problem is potholes. It’s
hard to see potholes in the winter since it gets dark earlier; and because the weather includes wet, snowy and
icy conditions, you are much more likely to hit potholes
in winter than summer. I’ve seen this over 20 years in
the wheel repair business, and I’ve also seen customers delay repairs until the spring. My suggestion: if
your wheel is bent, get it repaired immediately. If it’s
cracked, get it repaired immediately. Take good care
of your winter wheels, because your life depends on
them. As an aside: I would say that about 97 percent of
all cracked wheels are also bent. In most of the cases,
the wheel is bent first which can contribute to cracking,

so it pays to manage problems when they happen to
avoid new problems.
Managing corrosion and leaking
Corroded wheels are a safety issue. If the paint or
chrome is peeling off your wheel where the wheel and
tire meet, you very likely have a corrosion problem and
need to have the wheels fixed. This means thoroughly
removing the existing corrosion. If you do not have the
corrosion properly removed, the tire can develop an air
leak if there is a separation between the wheel and tire.
If you suspect that your tires are leaking, it is critical to
do a proper and thorough leak check of the wheels and
the tires. Even a tiny pinhole in your wheel can cause
a leak. Also, if you suspect you have a leak in the valve
stem, have the entire valve stem area – not just your
valve stem – checked for leaks, and be persistent. If
your service provider can’t find a leak, keep an eye on it
and go back and have it rechecked. If you thin you have
a problem and your provider can’t find it, it may be
time to seek out a professional rim and wheel specialist
who knows how to: check for wheel/tire leaks, identify
corrosion, and remove and repair corrosion problems.
Reconditioned wheels
Not all reconditioning companies are alike. There are
some amazing gaps in the quality of the work. The
largest gap is in the quality of the cores companies use.
Some companies will recondition cores that have multiple cracks and / or other structural problems. Some
will grind down the wheel during reconditioning,
which won’t be visible to you by looking at it. How
can you tell which companies are good? Getting recommendations from friends or professionals who know the
business is a smart idea. Using reconditioned wheels is
a good alternative to new wheels, which can also save
you up to $200-$300 per wheel. However, some wheels
are just priced cheap because the quality is cheap. Unfortunately, the cosmetics of the wheel don’t let you
see the quality of the product you’re buying unless the
cosmetics are badly done. If there is a $50.00 or so gap
between two different reconditioned wheels on line or
from local vendors, the gap may be a quality gap, so do
your homework before you buy. I recommend buying
reconditioned wheels locally if you can. You want to be
able to deal with people in person if there is a problem.
Different tires do different jobs
One major difference between tires is the type of weather the tires are designed to endure. There are four types
of weather conditions: wet, dry, snow and ice. If you
live in Florida, you don’t need to have snow and ice
tires. If you live in New England, the Midwest and
other areas of the U.S., you probably need tires that
are designed to withstand winter temperatures and are
designed to grip on snow and ice. Most “All Season”
tires are not designed to grip in the snow and ice. They
are also not designed to hold up to cold temperatures.
There are some true “All Weather” tires available that
are designed for all four types of weather conditions. I
drive on the Nokian WRG2 because I want to be safe.
I love the grip on the snow and ice. They have very
low rolling resistance which basically means they save
money on gas. Given gas is about $4.00 per gallon as I
write, I like knowing that my tires have paid for themselves last year and that now they’re saving me more
money every year I drive on them. It also means that
although the tires are more expensive initially, they
will probably pay for themselves with gas savings in
the first year. My son in-law Sean likes the Michelin Ice
xi3, and Dunlop makes an impressive tire for the Sports
models. However, you cannot usually get one after the
end of December so if you damage a tire, you’re out
of luck. Finally, if you’re a skier and go to Vermont,
New Hampshire or Maine weekly, you probably should
consider the Nokian Hakaa 7 which is one of the best
studded tires sold.
As always, the most important thing to remember –
always put safety first. ♦

2012: The year in racing
Success, disappointment and changes ahead!

I
’m writing this article on the last official racing day
of the year, after the last race of the year, the Brazilian Grand Prix. There is no BMW content in F1
these days, so no comment on the F1 season except
to say that it went down to the wire with an ex-BMW
driver winning the championship.
I digress – 24 hours of LeMans
In another high point with no BMW content, I had
the pleasure to attend the 24 hours of LeMans this year
which was a great experience. I owe the opportunity to a
friend of mine who grew up in the town of LeMans. We
had a good time discussing the experience of growing
up totally immersed in one of the greatest racing events
— him the 24 hours of LeMans and me the Indianapolis
500. It is much different than approaching these events
later in life. I was very disappointed that the BMW
ALMS team declined the invitation to LeMans due to
financial considerations. It would have been great to see
them in action.
The sense of history at the Circuit Le Sarthe is
immense. The track is huge, but much of it isn’t readily accessible, so the crowd is concentrated in the area
around the pits, the Dunlop Curves and the very beginning of the Mulsanne straight. The sense of the track
being partially public roads is strong and the viewing
areas are fantastic. I had the privilege to be in the ACO
member grand stand which had great views from the
Ford chicane to the Dunlop curves and was painfully
loud, particularly the 12 cylinder Ferraris which just

screamed down the straight. The experience is somewhat surreal as the actual hours of darkness are very
short. The race is scheduled around the longest day of
the year and LeMans is quite far north by latitude so the
night is only really dark for about 4 or 5 hours.
Years of watching the race on television didn’t prepare me for the actual length of the race. In person, the
hours just stretch out. I stayed in the grand stand (one of
the only people to stay) for several hours, longer than a
normal professional race and realized that this race was
just warming up. So I made a trip to the infield, a round
in the paddock and some dinner filled up the evening.
I won’t do a race recap, but it was an interesting race
and to nobody’s surprise Audi won, but with the new
hybrid which was a surprise. One final point, the level
of preparedness, professionalism, sophistication and investment exhibited by Audi was at a different level from
their competitors.
... on to BMW related news
In my last article I reported that I was astounded that
BMW won a DTM (German Touring Car Masters) race
in their first year back in the series after being gone for
20 years. I was even more astounded (well maybe not
as much as Mercedes and Audi) when BMW won both
the driver’s championship and the team championship
in the DTM this year. No one thought that was possible. It is similar to an NFL expansion team winning
the Superbowl in their first season, or a new F1 team
winning the championship in their first year. It just isn’t
done! The technology is very similar to F1 machinery in
sophistication and the driving talent is top notch.
BMW decided to play at the highest level in their
home market and it paid off in spades. They look like
geniuses when they could have finished last and met
everyone’s (except their own) expectations. One of the
more interesting aspects of BMW’s commitment to the
DTM is the lack of connection to the US market. It is
possible that the participation was focused towards the
expanding markets in Asia where DTM bragging rights
might be more interesting to the consumers.
With the BMW focus on the DTM this year, it is critical to the US fans that they stay committed to the ALMS
series since it is now merging with the GRAND-AM
series over the next few years. It will be interesting to
see how the two series evolve into one given the great
differences in philosophy between the LeMans series
and the NASCAR owned GRAND-AM series. I must
admit that I don’t care for the Daytona Prototypes in
their current form. One of the reasons I enjoy racing is
the technology development in the prototypes, and the
Daytona prototypes do not develop technology. So stay
tuned to how this merger unfolds.
capturing third in the top GT class in both the drivers
and team categories with their M3s. On the ALMS side
the Rahal Letterman Lanigan M3s finished second this
year behind the Corvette team.
For BMW fans based in the US, the merger of ALMS
and GRAND-AM will determine the commitment BMW
shows for continued investment in BMW racing in the
US. Hopefully the merger will find places for RLL and
Turner to continue their success into the future. I love to
watch BMWs race and what happens in 2014 will have a
big influence on that future.
Finally, touring car racing is where stock based, evenly matched sedans duke it out in national series like
the British Touring Car Championship and in the World
Touring Car Championship. The WTCC had a big event
this year as it featured a round at Sears Point to bring
the series to the US. It was a great race and BMW did
well, but no win. It was a similar story across the year
with BMW winning a few rounds, but they were not really competitive at the top level. It was also that way in
the BTCC with BMW coming in 4th in the championship.
BMW AG has not been investing or seriously supporting Touring Car racing over the last few years and while
the cars are inherently competitive, they are not at the
championship level. This is similar to how BMW treats
SCCA racing in the US. I don’t expect this to change in
the near future.
I’ll check back in next spring as the 2013 race season
kicks into gear. Until then, stay on track!
