Pursue excellence.
The past four years taught me the importance of unity. Unity is the state of being whole. It is the opportunity
to bring vision to the blind, trust to the uncertain, and courage to the timid.
Building unity is not easy, but should be the priority of every leader. Unity is necessary for success because
it aligns the organization toward a common purpose. Our purpose at St. Laurence is to live the Essential
Elements of an Edmund Rice Christian Brother. This year we focused on Essential Element #7: Pursue
excellence in all endeavors.
What does pursuing excellence mean? If our vision is to become the premier school of choice on the southside
of Chicago, then we must promote a strong academic curriculum and cultivate a desire for excellence. It also
requires us to develop an educational culture that fosters growth of the whole person, higher order thinking,
and life-long learning.
These tasks allowed us to lay the foundation for continued success. I am proud of the St. Laurence community
and our most recent accomplishments. I pray these accomplishments ensure the trust of our faculty, alumni,
parents and students. As Mark 3:25 states, “If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand.” Jesus
made this statement knowing the difficulty of executing initiatives and creating change. He understood that
leaders must align vision, trust, and courage in order to build a home where everyone is welcome.

Strengthening our incorporation of technology in
the classroom, our incoming freshman Class of 2020
will be 1:1 with iPads.
St. Laurence’s 1:1 Program Several years ago, St. Laurence recognized the value technology has in enhancing education, and started the process of incorporating technology

ACT Prep Class This December, many members of our junior year O’Toole Program took
the ACT after completing a 10-week ACT Prep course facilitated by St. Louis University
Dean of Law and St. Laurence alum, Mr. Dan Keating ‘79. The experience greatly improved
our student’s ACT scores in all categories. Some students increased their composite score
by 6 points. Our students have been applauded for their hard work and are encouraged
to continue to prepare for the ACT and take the test multiple times. Research shows this
method is the ideal approach to improve ACT scores. January began STL’s second ACT
Prep Course offering at the school through ExcelEdge.
”If it meant improving your overall score by 6 points, would
you get up at 8:00 every Saturday for 12 weeks?” Well,
this is the question that I chose to answer by taking Mr.
Keating’s ACT Class. Mr. Keating, a law professor at Washington University in St. Louis, did a wonderful job of helping
me prepare for the ACT when he held a free prep class
every week. By having the class spread out, it helped me
reinforce and keep in mind the information when I needed
it for the test. I am so grateful for this opportunity and know
that I could not have had this chance anywhere else.

Football Has Historic Run
This fall saw the best football season for
the Vikings since 1979. They captured
their first Chicago Catholic League Title
since 1987 and advanced to the IHSA
Semifinals for the first time since 1979.
The Vikes finished 10-3 on the year and
set a new single-season scoring record
with 566 points on the season (43.5
points per game). With such a prolific offense, a number of individual records were

Future is Bright for Soccer
The soccer program is young and talented
with a bright future ahead. Despite having
over 70 student-athletes in the program,
there were only 5 seniors on the team. All
11 starters will be back next year for the
Vikings, and many of them were freshmen
and sophomores this year. That experience
is sure to benefit the Vikes as they look to
capture their 2nd CCL title in 3 years. Also,

Bowling Team Wins CCL Championship
For the 2nd straight year, the bowling
team reigned supreme in the Chicago
Catholic League. After dominating the
regular season, the bowlers rolled to the
Championship at the CCL Tournament.
Additionally, the varsity team took home
tournament titles at the Oak Lawn Invite
and the Morgan Park Invite this year. The
Vikings advanced to the Sectional where
they bowled well, but came up just short
of returning to the State Finals. Junior
Juan Escamilla advanced to the Finals as
an individual. Senior Manny Sanchez won
the Lawless Award in the CCL and senior

Basketball on the Rise
After winning the most games since 200809 last season, the basketball team faced
a grueling schedule that included a number of ranked teams to open this season.
While they had a chance to win almost
every one of the early season games, they
struggled to a 1-6 start. However, the tough
competition and the close games gave the
Vikings confidence as they entered 2016.
As of mid-February, they were 14-12 and
in the semifinals of the Chicago Catholic
League Tournament. The growth in the program in the two years since Coach Maley
took over has been impressive, and his
first freshmen class lost only two games all
season under the tutelage of Jim Tracy ’72.
From Old Quarry Middle School in Lemont, Anthony is a tremendous
leader in the classroom and on the field. He carries a 4.3 GPA and
is a captain of both the football and baseball teams. He was a 2-year
starter on the offensive line and part of this year’s record-setting
semifinal football team, and also a 2-year starter for baseball, where
he is catcher and bats in the middle of the order.
As a senior, Anthony looks back fondly. “The decision to attend STL
was an easy one,” he says. “As soon as I shadowed, I knew it was the
place for me. St. Laurence has prepared me academically to meet
the challenges at the next level, and also prepared me for real life
situations outside of the classroom with the STEM approach. On the
field, my coaches have pushed me to reach my goals by preaching
belief in myself and giving it my all, as well as playing the game the
right way. St. Laurence has brought out the best in me both academically and athletically, and I am proud to say I will be attending Lewis
University on a baseball scholarship.”

50 Years Have Gone By!
It’s time for a reunion of the Class of 1966. We’re putting together a weekend of events, and you can choose to be part of any or all of
them. On Friday, September 9, we plan to tailgate for a couple of hours before the 7:30 p.m. kickoff of the St. Laurence vs. Bishop McNamara game. Saturday’s events are tentative, but plan on a Sunday morning mass, September 11, dedicated to our deceased classmates,
followed by a brunch. Spouses are welcome. Details to follow.
