FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK
Praised be Jesus Christ! FAQ – I imagine most of you know
what these letters signify: “frequently asked questions”. In the
Catholic Church I think it’s safe to say that the question I hear
most often is whether a person can receive Holy Communion
twice in one day. And the answer is “yes” – if you’re in the
state of sanctifying grace (i.e. you’re not aware of having
committed any mortal sins – or if you have, you’ve gone to
confession and received absolution), then you’re able to receive
Holy Communion a second time on any given day. The only
stipulation is that the 2nd time must be at a Mass and not at a
Communion service. Once that question has been addressed
almost inevitably marriage issues come to the fore. And I think
that we’ve done a poor job of catechizing in this area.... no
matter how many times I explain it, people still don’t seem to
understand that a Catholic can only get married in the presence
of a priest or a deacon. If the wedding takes place without a
priest or deacon present and one of the spouses is Catholic,
that person is now in what is called an irregular marriage. What
this means is that they have severed their communion with Our
Lord and are no longer able to receive Jesus in Holy
Communion.
Thankfully the marriage can be blessed
(“convalidation” is the technical term). So let me take a
moment and spell this out more thoroughly: no matter where a
Catholic gets married, he/she is to contact their parish and work
with the pastor so as to properly prepare for their sacramental
marriage. A Catholic can marry a non-Catholic and the wedding
can take place in the non-Catholic’s church, but this is done by
notifying the priest at least 6 months before the wedding so that
he can get the necessary dispensation. For the record, rarely is
permission given to get married outside. Why is that? The
Church’s preference is for a sacred act to happen in a sacred
place. For example, Mass should generally be offered on a
consecrated altar (there are exceptions – we have regular
Masses at the nursing homes, and that is perfectly legitimate).
Because marriage is once in a person’s lifetime, it ought to be
in the Presence of Jesus in the Tabernacle (or at least in some
house of God). I heard a person defend this teaching by asking
the hostile bride who her favorite musician was and she said
without hesitation Kenny Chesney. The person said she had
front row tickets to his concert and would give them to her if
she wanted. Of course the bride was elated! What would
happen if the girl stopped by to pick up the tickets and instead
was guided to the living room where the Kenny Chesney
concert was on T.V.? Being with someone in person is better
by far than any other way. And Jesus lives in our Catholic
Churches – wouldn’t you want a front row ticket at your
wedding to be near the very Author of marriage and family?
Whether or not you’re convinced by this, please know that any
Catholic that marries without going through the proper
channels is not able to receive Holy Communion until having
their marriage blessed. If you know someone to whom this
applies, please have them contact their pastor and begin the
convalidation process. They’ll need to bring a copy of their civil
marriage license and the Catholic will want to make a good
confession. I’ve helped a lot of couples with this process and
I’m happy to continue doing whatever it takes to help people get
to Heaven. Oh, and by the way, the third most frequently asked
question these days is “Do you miss Father Burish?” What do
you think?!!!!
May God guide our young couples as they open their hearts to
receive the sacramental grace of marriage!
Your friend in Christ,
Father Martin

Pro-Life Minute Fact: In the time it takes you to read this fact, 7

NOTES FROM FR. MARTIN
Holy Land Pilgrimage Update: One of the most effective ways to
better know a person is to visit his home. Would you like to visit
Jesus' earthly home? As St. John Paul II famously said, "The future
starts today, not tomorrow." I will not be leading another trip to the
Holy Land during my time in Marshfield and Spencer - and though
the trip is already over half full, there are about 20 spots remaining. I
am confident that God will protect us (statistics show that you're
safer as an American in the Holy Land than you are in Chicago) and
that the graces we will receive will be a gift to all who cannot
travel. Please pray and ask God if He would like you to visit the
home of His Only-Begotten Son. Then sign up soon - the trip closes
at the end of September. If you have questions, please call me on
my cell phone at 715-650-7893.
Crisis in the Middle East: Bishop Callahan is urging us to support
our brothers and sisters in the Middle East by raising funds to meet
the most urgent humanitarian needs facing the people in Iraq, Gaza,
Syria and surrounding countries where refugees have fled.
Parishioners should make their checks payable to the parish, with
“Middle East Relief” on the memo line. Minimally, please pray for
peace in these war-torn areas where so much sadness prevails!
Save the Date! Holy Smokes! The pig roast is just around the
corner. Join us as we host our second annual Pig Roast at the KC
Hall on Tuesday, Oct. 21st beginning at 5:00pm.Tickets will be
available soon. Please watch the bulletin for more information.
Pig Roast Silent Auction: Once again we will have a silent auction
as well as bucket raffles. We will be in need of items of a $50.00
value or more for the silent auction and smaller items for the bucket
raffles. If you would like to donate to the silent auction, please
contact Jill Hiller at 715-305-6068. Thank you!
Baptism Class for those requesting the baptism of their
children will take place Tuesday, October 7 th, 5:30-8:00pm in
the Columbia Room. Pre-registration is required and you can do so
by calling 715-384-9565 ext 2. For those not registered in the parish,
information will be given on how to do so. This class is for all
parents of their first child and/or those who have not yet taken
Father Martin’s Baptismal class.
Sister Act II - St. John’s new Mission Club will hold an update/
informational meeting on Monday, September 29 th in the Columbia
room. Anyone interested in knowing what we have accomplished so
far for Sr. Sabina and to discuss where we go next is invited to
attend! The meeting will be coordinated by SAM Steiner and Patti
Willkom. Questions? Please call SAM at 715-384-4397.

specialized religious education program is being offered to students
with developmental disabilities who struggle with the inclusive
challenges of standard programs offered by their parishes. This
class offers individualized instruction through the use of art, story
telling, song and fellowship. Lessons are based on Bible stories,
events from the church year and living our Catholic faith. Classes
meet on Monday evenings beginning in Oct. Cost is $20 if registered
by September 15th, 2014. For further information contact :Vivian
Gamble 715-659-5555 or Krisan Williams 715-387-2119.
