Upon arrival at Rome Fiumicino-Da Vinci Airport, a private vehicle will transport you to the coastal town of
Marina di Castagneto Carducci, the location of Spa Hotel Tombolo Talasso Resort.
After checking in, Fabio Guarducci, General Manager / Managing Partner of this and other Antinori hospitality
properties and Michelle Satti, a vineyard owner, will join us for an al fresco lunch overlooking the
Mediterranean. As we enjoy coastal specialties on the hotel terrace, Fabio, Michele and Marco will discuss
Italian wines and their personal favorites, many of which we will be enjoying in the days ahead. After lunch,
spend a leisurely afternoon at the resort, perhaps with time on the private beach, at the pool enjoying your day
pass to the Tombolo’s therapeutic baths and/or any of their wellness treatments.
As a prelude to each evening’s meal, you will partake in an experiential aperitivo, as the Italians would say.
Tonight’s experience will consist of a private tour of the private home of Allegra Antinori, one of the three
sisters who have taken the helm of the family business. Though Allegra spends most of her time in Florence
and traveling to the various Antinori estates, this residence and La Sabine, the compound that includes the
sisters’ childhood home is the place that she truly calls home. The minute you enter the grounds and walk
through the front door, you will appreciate Allegra’s gift for creating a lifestyle for herself and her family that
comes from the heart. (Incidentally, you will have an opportunity to meet Allegra at another of the Antinori
estates, Tenuta Tignanello outside of Florence, where she will host a wine tasting and luncheon later in the
week.) Next, we will take her ‘commute’ to the family’s neighboring vineyard, Guado al Tasso Antinori. There,
the Estate Director will welcome us for a tour of Guado al Tasso and the lovely Tuscan residence, which
serves as his family’s home, as well as the base of operations for the vineyard.
Following this immersion in the Antinori legacy, present and past, we will head to La Pineta, the Michelin-rated
restaurant reputed to be Tuscany’s best seafood restaurant. Chef/Owner and friend, Luciano Zazzeri is
looking forward to welcoming for a tour of his kitchen in addition to treating us to a stellar culinary experience
in this very charming beachside establishment.
Antinori Wines
In 1900, Piero Antinori bought several vineyards in the Chianti Classico region, including 47
hectares at Tignanello. Since then, Antinori has become one of Italy’s largest wine companies. Their
vision and innovation played a major role in the "Super-Tuscan" revolution of the 1970s with the
1971 launch of Tignanello, a barrique-aged wine that blended Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon,
making it ineligible for the Chianti Classico appellation. In the Bolgheri wine region of Tuscany the
Antinori wines are Guado al Tasso, the Scalabrone rose, Il Bruciato and Vermentino.

The ease of the Italian way of life is enviable. The people seem to strike a balance between past and present,
work and play, man-made and natural, extravagance and simplicity and so much more. Today’s itinerary will
be a reflection of that balance, combining water and land and, as you will see throughout the trip, activity and
down time. By the end of this trip, we want you to feel inspired as well as rejuvenated and perhaps ready to
assimilate aspects of Italian life into your own life back at home.
After a group breakfast, we will head to the town of San Vincente to board a boat for a tour of the coast. For
lunch, our captain will join us at one of his favorite spots among these islands of the Tuscan Archipelagos.
Back at the hotel, you will have time on your own to enjoy the baths, the beach cycling, tennis, or perhaps a
nap before the evening gets underway.
After drinks and sunset on the hotel’s terrace, we will be welcomed into the home of good friends of Marco’s,
Patrizia and Luigi, for a family-style Sunday dinner, with a pizza-making session to get things started. We will
be enjoying a combination of meals in private residences as well as in restaurants to provide the range of
mealtime experiences that are one of the secret ingredients of the Italian lifestyle
The National Park of the Tuscan Archipelago
Experiencing Italy on the water adds a completely different dimension to the Italian experience.
Islands make up about one sixth of Italy, including approximately 350 sea islands and thirteen
archipelagos. The National Park of the Tuscan Archipelago combines a terrestrial area of almost
18,000 hectares with a marine area of approximately 60,000 hectares, making it the largest marine
park in Europe. Comprised of seven principal islands, including Elba, ancient legend has it that when
Venus emerged from the waves of the sea, seven gemstones fell from her tiara -- and so the Islands of

Breakfast this morning will include a casual conversation led by Christine about the routines and traditions of
other cultures can enrich our own lifestyles. This is a dialogue that might informally continue during the course
of the trip. Afterwards, we will pay a visit to the owners of Castello Ginori di Querceto, the Marchesi Ginori.
This couple epitomizes Italian warmth, on the one hand and elegance, on the other. The Ginoris will host us for
a village tour and winetasting, followed by luncheon in one of the most beautiful dining rooms in Tuscany. You
will literally be surrounded by 360 views of the countryside as well as centuries of Ginori history in the form of
antique furniture, and important collections of armors and weaponry as well as porcelain.
Castello Ginori of Querceto
The ancient village of Querceto dates back to 100 A.D. In the
Middle Ages, Querceto was strategically important for its
natural resources resulting in centuries of territorial skirmishes
and revolts. In the 1500s, the noble family of Lisci of Volterra
gained control. In 1786, the last Lisci descendant, Francesca,
married Marchese Lorenzo Ginori. The family’s vision reversed
the years of famine and poverty that existed under the broader
control of the Medici dynasty. In 1814 Carlo Leopoldo
inherited the estate from his mother, Francesca, and ever since,
the estate and its castle have been in the Ginori family. The
family greatly modernized an array of cultivation methods,
particularly in cattle breeding. In the 20th century, under the
leadership of Lorenzo and his son Leonardo, the farming of the
land and the agriculturally-based production of energy have
become models for agricultural enterprise. Meanwhile the
village has been completely restored, preserving its ancient
rustic origins while also keeping it vibrant in everyday life.

Back at the hotel, the unique thalassotherapic treatments in the spa feature sea water from the Mediterranean,
for a wide selection of spa experiences like hydro-massages with algae or sales, underwater hydro-massages,
jet showers, horizontal sea rain showers and many more. Fabio will describe this to us and hopefully you can
take advantage of this unique feature of Tombolo.
We will reconvene for the early part of the evening for a tour and wine tasting at the Ornellaia estate with their
winemaker Axel Heinz. Ornellaia is owned by another of Tuscany’s winemaking dynasties, the Frescobaldis.
The proud producer of the Super Tuscan red, Masseto, the family shares a bit of history with the Antinoris.
Dinner will be in the neighboring hilltop village of Bolgheri, at one of Marco’s favorite restaurants, where the
menu only reveals a fraction of the gustatory possibilities. After dinner, we will walk over to a enoteca, a cross
between a wine bar, restaurant and wine merchant to reconvene with our friend Michele Satta and a couple of
other winemaking friends for a bit of fun, in the form of a wine taste-off. Needless to say, plan on some
wonderful food and wine this evening!
Ornelia Wines
The Ornellaia estate was founded in 1981 by Marchese Lodovico Antinori
when he decided to establish a new, truly exceptional wine estate in an
unspoiled, uncultivated region of the Tuscan coast known as the Maremma.
He made the unconventional decision to plant Cabernet Sauvignon,
Cabernet Franc and Merlot because of his belief that these varietals would
be best suited to the exceptional microclimate of the area. In March of 1999
the Californian wine producer, Robert Mondavi, purchased a minority share
in Ornellaia, and then, in 2002, he assumed full ownership – of which he
passed 50% to the Tuscan wine producing family Marchesi de’ Frescobaldi.
Then in April 2005, Marchesi de’ Frescobaldi assumed full ownership.

independence, integrity, and continuity that have contributed to its

After a leisurely breakfast, we will drive away from the coast to the estate of the Ferragamo family, Tenuta Il
Borro. Surrounded by manicured Italianate gardens, the estate’s Villa will be ‘home’ to our group until our
departure on Thursday morning. In the case of life at Il Borro, it’s a matter of
‘when in Rome…” Instead when in Il Borro’, you can be sure that you will
love easing into the rhythm of this very special place.
After settling in, we will enjoy lunch in The Hunting Lodge and then, in the
Italian custom, and then be taken on a leisurely walking tour of the property,
including a tour of the private residence of the family’s patriarch, Ferruccio
Ferragamo. What happens next will be entirely up to you… During our stay,
Il Borro will be ours to enjoy. You might want to explore the grounds on foot,
bicycle or horseback, stroll through the medieval village, indulge in a
treatment at the wellness center, play tennis or work out in the fitness facility.
On the other hand, you might want to simply retreat to your room or spend
some time poolside ‘under the Tuscan sun’.
For our first evening, we will enjoy a movable aperitivo. Those who wish can discover their “inner Italian chef”
with Marco’s parents and aunties as they prepare classic Tuscan dishes. The Villa is equipped with a
beautifully appointed kitchen, with plenty of room for everyone to join in, Big Chill style. For the timid or weary,
there is always the sweeping view of the valley as the sun goes down, taken from the adjoining terrace. Dinner
will be served under the stars, weather permitting, so a wrap might come in handy. After dinner conversations
coffee and limoncello will continue in the living room -- or perhaps in the billiards room. Think of this evening
as your own personal house party!
The Il Borro Estate of the Ferragamo Family
Rising majestically from the woods, vineyards and dramatic landscape of this unique area, the Villa
lies at the heart of the Borro estate. The Villa was constructed by the Hohenlohe Waldenburg
Schillingfurst princes over the site of existing ruins to become their fashionable summer residence
until the early 20th century when ownership passed to the royal Savoia family. In 1993, the Ferragamo
family acquired the property and, after eleven years of extensive renovations, restored the villa to its
former glory. The estate’s medieval village dates back more than a millennium, having survived civil
unrest, wars, poverty, famine and the erosion of time.
Today, the estate enjoys a new splendor, thanks to the care lavished on it by the Ferragamo family.
With superb views and extensive grounds, the villa is equipped with every comfort. Leisure options
include the billiards, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a beautifully appointed wellness center and

Exploration of the weekly market in the neighboring town of Figline, while procuring
the makings for the picnic of Tuscan specialties, which we will enjoy back at Il Borro
Leisure time (horseback riding, spa appointments, a swim… or perhaps just a nap)
Salvatore Ferragamo hosts this evening with wine and hors d’oeuvres on the
terrace, followed by a wine tasting and tour of the wine cellars and art museum
Dinner follows in the formal dining room of Villa Il Borro
Ease into the daily routine at Il Borro with a family style breakfast at the kitchen table. A bit later, we will
explore the weekly market in the nearby village of Figline. The center of this historic town will be alive with
street vendors selling everything from local produce and meats, cheeses and prepared foods to flowers, crafts
and wine. Head out on your own or join Christine and Marco as they set out to procure the elements for the
picnic lunch that will follow - a feast of the senses, as the locals might envision it, with regional offerings
including roast porchetta on country bread, rotisserie chicken, local cheeses and Tuscan sweets like torrone
and croquante.
Figline Market
The large square of Figline’s town centre was built at the beginning of the
8th century as a market for trading goods. It is still used today as it was
centuries ago. Every Tuesday this typical Italian market, with its colorful
stalls, fresh local produce and competitive prices draws locals and visitors
from all around. The square is enclosed by an imposing stone wall from the
8th Century which was built and fortified by the capital, Florence, to
preserve the town’s strategic vantage point of the Arno valley.
You will have the afternoon to yourself to fold into the lifestyle of Il Borro, perhaps with a guided trail ride on
horseback or a game of tennis. For the evening, Salvatore Ferragamo will be our host, starting with a private
wine tasting and tour in the Il Borro wine cellars and a visit to the Ferragamo Wine & Art exhibit, a collection of
67 prints from Ferruccio Ferragamo's extensive private collection, including prints from the 14th to the 18th
centuries. After meandering back to the Villa, we will be seated for dinner in the main dining room, with
Salvatore’s selections of wines to accompany our meal. In keeping with the Il Borro tradition of quiet elegance
and boundless hospitality, the billiards room and the living room will serve as open invitations for those who
are up for more conversation, wine and good times.

the Uffizi Gallery to the Pitti Palace, by way of the Ponte

The House of Ferragamo
Salvatore Ferragamo revolutionized the footwear industry, and in the process earned the title
‘shoemaker to the stars’. His ardent fans included Greta Garbo and Audrey Hepburn, as well as
Marilyn Monroe, who wore his creations exclusively. His success was due to innovations that enabled
him to reconcile exquisite beauty with incomparable comfort, the result of a lifetime of research.
Salvatore Ferragamo’s legacy left a profound mark on the history of costume design. His masterful
creations have been the subject of important exhibitions at The Victoria & Albert Museum, The
County Museum in Los Angeles and The Guggenheim in New York. .
At the age of 14, Salvatore left Italy for America to work in a large footwear company in Boston.
When the film industry moved west to Hollywood, he followed and soon began designing shoes for the
Hollywood elite. In 1927, unable to keep up with demand using American labor, he returned to Italy.
Since 1938, the company’s headquarters has been at Palazzo Ferrone Spini in Florence, a city
selected for its rich tradition in skilled craftsmanship. The Ferragamo Museum is also housed in the
magnificent headquarters building. It’s exhibitions pay tribute to the vision of the founder of one of
Italy’s iconic design houses. When he died in 1960, Salvatore Ferragamo had realized the great
dream of his life: to create and produce the most beautiful shoes in the world. His son Ferruccio and
his twin grandsons, Salvatore and James, are now carrying on the plan that he nurtured.

As our time together draws to a close, the Marchese Ginori have invited us to dine with them. However
tonight, we will join them at their in-town home, Palazzo Ginori. After the Marchesa takes us on a tour of their
home, she and her husband, Lorenzo, will host what is sure to be one of the evening highlights of our trip.

Breakfast is at your leisure, though those interested can join Marco or Christine. Then we will take another of
Allegra Antinori’s commutes, but this time to the nearby Tenuta Tignanello, the estate that produces this
formidable wine on site as well growing the grapes for several other labels. After a tour of the winery, Allegra
will host us in the estate’s villa, with its extraordinary gardens and breathtaking views for a wine tasting and
luncheon of Tuscan specialties. After lunch, she will take us for a tour of their private residences.
The Antinori Estate of Tignanello
With its famous Tignanello and Solaia vineyards, the Tignanello estate is situated in the heart of
Chianti Classico, about 20 miles south of Florence. Of Tignanello’s 325 hectares of land, the
Tignanello vineyard covers 47 hectares and Solaia covers 10-hectares. The native Sangiovese variety
and the non-native Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc varieties are planted here as well as a
small quantity of white grapes which are used in the production of Vinsanto. Antinori initially
experimented with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc in the Twenties, but they were abandoned
during World War II, and replanted in the Sixties to be used commercially in the Seventies. While
Tignanello and Solaia are grown, made into wine and aged at Tignanello, other grapes grown on the
estate are produced elsewhere for Santa Cristina, Villa Antinori and Tenute Marchese Antinori.

Our last evening will start off at the hotel with a sampling of various Italian aperitivo with commentary by
Marco. It occurred to us that the range of Italian aperitifs are still a mystery to many visitors. See for yourself
which will become your favorite. Might it be rabarbaro zucca, cardamaro, aperol or maybe limoncello, which
was popularized by the book and film, Under the Tuscan Sun? Afterwards, a short walk will bring us to the
restaurant where we will have our final dinner. There may be toasts, roasts, photos and anecdotes, but
regardless, the evening promises to be a special night among friends!
