EDWARD EGAN
1433364, No.9. Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve
who died on 16th December 1943.
Remembered with Honour
Berlin 1939-1945 War Cemetery
Edward Egan was born around 1923 and was the son of Daniel Egan and Kathleen Egan
who originated from Cork in Ireland. Edward attended to Roman Catholic School in
Chideock along with his older brothers Jack Egan and Gerry Egan. After the death of their
mother and their father’s return to Ireland the young boys lived with Mrs Anderson at No.1,
Broadmead in Chideock.
Edward joined the RAF Volunteer Reserve and was based with No.9 Squadron stationed at
Bardney in Lincolnshire. Bardney was operation from April 1943 until July 1945. Edward
would have flown in a Lancaster Bomber and he is mentioned in Service Personnel of
No.9. Squadron – Lost Bombers. It appears his plane was either ‘shot down’ or crashed
over Eberswalde-Finow 43km NE of Berlin.
On Bardney village green there is a memorial to RAF Bardney and IX Sqn. It is made
from the three-bladed propeller and spinner from a Lancaster and a piece of Norwegian
stone, mounted in a low wall.
Edward (known as Teddy) was a very popular and charming young man in Chideock and it
is said that ‘many hearts were broken’ after the village learnt of his death.
Edward Egan died on 16th December, 1942. He is buried in the Berlin 1939-1945 War
Cemetery and is commemorated on the Chideock War Memorial.
