UND Celebration welcomes Dolly Duffy, new students
More than 85 people gathered to celebrate our Club’s annual Student Send-off on Aug. 13 at Millennium Park. The event, sponsored by the Notre Dame Federal Credit Union, allowed incoming students and their families to meet and ask questions before
the start of the school year in South Bend.

On the evening of Wednesday, Oct. 15, Brad Gregory, a Notre
Dame professor of history and Dorothy G. Griffin Collegiate
Chair, will give a Hesburgh Lecture titled, “The Reformation
Era and the Makings of Modernity,” to a joint gathering of
the Catholic Studies Program of Aquinas College and the St.
Benedict Forum of Hope College. Gregory is the director of the
Notre Dame Institute for Advanced Study and a historian of late
medieval and early modern Christianity and of intellectual history
in early modern Europe. His research focuses on 16th- and 17thcentury Catholics, Protestants and radical Protestants in England,
France, the Low Countries and Germany. Of central concern to
his work as well are the long-term ideological influences and
institutional consequences of the Reformation era on the making
of the modern Western world. Another area of interest is methodology and theory in the understanding of religion and history.
Watch your email and our Club website for a specific time and
venue for this lecture.

Hesburgh Month of Service at CCWM
Our Club’s Universal Notre Dame Night Celebration was
held June 19 at Watermark Country Club. The event was a huge
success with 87 attending, including the families of five incoming
freshmen and three incoming Saint Mary’s College students. The
Notre Dame Club of Muskegon also joined us for the event.
Dolly Duffy, associate vice president for University Relations and executive director of the Notre Dame Alumni Association, was our guest speaker. She shared updates on happenings at
the University and within the Alumni Association. We were pleased
Regional Director Hugh Sonk could join us and introduce Dolly.
Hal Smith was presented with the Award of the Year for
his years of service to Notre Dame, the Grand Rapids community
and our Club. Hal’s wife, Sharon, along with many family and
friends were there to support Hal. Hal has been a member of the
University’s Hesburgh Library Advisory Council since 1998 and Hal
and Sharon established a library endowment at Notre Dame. Hal
also has been a strong supporter of our Club’s Golf and Scholarship
Invitational, which is our primary scholarship fundraiser.
As is our tradition, Tim McMorrow lead the group in
the singing of the Alma Mater to close out the evening. We are
grateful to the new and familiar faces who were able to attend and
celebrate with us.

31st Golf & Scholarship Invitational raises $15,000
A donation by the Club to Sparta Health Center helped to fund a baby shower for 15 expectant women in June. Different stations that evening offered the women advice on car seat use, breastfeeding, first aid, infant well-being, information on the Catholic Charities West Michigan Baby & Toddler Pantry and WIC. The women also received gift baskets and a tostada dinner. Summer Service Learning Student Elizabeth
Hillman, front left, and Kathy Bego helped to host the event.

More than 80 golfers, our best turnout in four years, attending
the 31st annual Notre Dame Club of Grand Rapids Golf and Scholarship
Invitational were greeted by lovely, humid weather after a dicey forecast
at Watermark Country Club on June 30. Great golf, delicious food and
camaraderie rounded out the day.
We are grateful to the generosity of our players and sponsors as
nearly $15,000 was raised for our Club’s Scholarship Endowment Fund.
Special guest Mike Denbrock, Fighting Irish Football offensive
coordinator, updated banquet guests on the season ahead. And Rob Smith
was the third person inducted into the Golf & Scholarship Invitational Hall
of Fame for his more than 25 years of participation and sponsorship of our
Club’s primary fundraiser.
