SOUTHERN DRAKENSBERG GARDEN FESTIVAL
6 - 8 NOVEMBER
The Southern Drakensberg Gardens Festival
is proudly hosted by the Himeville Underberg
Garden Club and takes place over the weekend
Friday 6th November to Sunday 8th November.
Visit the stunning and beautiful farm, estate
and village gardens, in Bulwer, Underberg and
its surroundings. The gardens will be open
for your enjoyment from 09h00 to 16h30 each
day. This year you will return to some gardens
you have seen before as well as newcomers
on the route.
A Festival Pocket Guide serves as your ticket
and entry to the gardens. These are R70.per
person and contain information and directions
to the Open Gardens as well as the programme
for the weekend. Pocket guides will be on sale
at the SPAR,during the preceeding week as
well as Mikes Restaurant. If travelling from
Pietermaritzburg,tickets will be available at
“Ard Lui,” the first Open Garden in Bulwer. If
travelling from Kokstad the first Open Garden
is” Ericsberg” Farm on your right before the
Umzimkulu bridge.
“THE BARN” at Hlogoma Farm is the” Festival
Hub” for the Open Gardens weekend. On the
R617 from Bulwer, The Barn can be found on
the right hand side of the road,approximately
4km before Underberg. Festival Pocket
guides\tickets will also be on sale at The Barn.
There will be interesting craft stalls to browse
among and the work of local artists on display.
Neil Prior, our local photographer and musician,
will provide music over the weekend.
Delicious teas and cakes as well as light
lunches will be served.
The Barn is also the venue for the Flower Show,
from 13h00 on Friday. Flower arrangements and
magnificent specimen blooms will be
showcased with prize giving on Saturday at
Shaun and Laurian van Huyssteen’s garden on the Bushmansnek road is new to gardeners
who come to the open gardens weekend. Shaun has achieved a lot in the two years that he has
been at Tegwan Farm with his creative flair. The garden boasts over 400 roses and a parklike
garden with views of the berg. The garden features sweeping flower beds and cascading
landscapes and Shaun has enhanced the beauty of the old well established trees through
pruning. It is a must view garden as you will be able to see it change over the coming years
and how much can be achieved in a short time
17h30.There will be flower demonstrations
every hour from 11h00 on Saturday and a
talk on Roses by Linda Pieterse of Tarr Roses
at 16h30.
.A cocktail function follows, sponsored by
Underberg SPAR, at 17h30. Di Higginson
Keath will be giving a fascinating
presentation on her trip to India entitled
“Monsoon Journey - in pursuit of the Blue
Poppy”. Tickets for the Cocktail function are
