The Heartbeat of Highwater
“Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion
blot out my transgressions. Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.”
Psalm 51:1-2
Highwater Welcomes….
Brigette Rizzo, who has done such a fine job directing our choir since November, will be adding to her
role here at Highwater by leading a class for senior
high students after church. The class will meet for
the first time on Sunday, February 26 after church,
and future meetings will be planned at that point.
Brigette has committed to this role through June, including the mission trip to Cincinnati.
Brigette’s roles will include leading a class twice a
month, organizing activities or devotions for youth
during the 9:30 hour, and continuing her leadership
during an off-site youth activities. She has already
taken a leadership role of our youth during the lockin in December and Winter Jam concert in February.
This is the next step we are taking to rededicate our
church to the teaching ministry of children and
youth. We have also slowly but surely been adding
to the ranks of teachers in our elementary classes. As always, I express my
appreciation for all who show their dedication to children and faith by teaching.

Following the 10:30a Worship Service in the
Legg Center…a Sunday of basketball excitement!
From grade 12 to grade 2, we have a whole bunch of
basketball players in our church. And let’s not forget
those who have skills that are even a little more mature! Let’s put all that talent on display!
Depending on how many people are interested, we’ll put together 2 or 4 teams. If you are
school-aged, please indicate your interest in playing
to Sam Preston. If you are post-high school, contact
Pastor Scott, or just put
your name on the sign-up
sheet as it goes by.
If you are more of a
fan, don’t worry—we’ll sell
court-side seats and raise
some money for this summer’s youth mission trip.
And of course there will be
a concession stand open for
your convenience as well!

Who to call with ideas and questions Food pantry items are always welcomed and a
collection container is located in the Narthex. However, it would be great if everyone could remember
to bring an item to be collected on the last Sunday of
each month. The Utica Food Pantry is currently experiencing a shortage of toilet paper. ... Anything and
everything from Highwater is always greatly appreciated !!
Also, we continue to collect 'change for change'. A
jar is located in the Narthex. Please
consider dropping some pocket
change into the jar. Missions will
allocate the collection to coordinate
with the church's current missions
project. Thank you for your ongoing
support as we help our neighbors in
need.

Mark your calendars for this
year's Wednesday night
Lenten Series which will be
held in partnership with Highwater Congregational UCC,
United Church of Granville,
and St. John's UCC. Each
evening, after eating together
(it's a potluck!, please bring a
side dish / dessert to share), Nan Weir, a talented spiritual director and retreat leader from
Columbus, will facilitate, offering participants
the opportunity to take part in one (of two)
meditative practices with others.
There it is. It was written as a
response in the area where the leaders
of the church were to describe what
would be expected of the pastor hired
to lead the church. Yes, it is strange that the document takes 18 pages to get to the good stuff. Yes, it
is an area that I highlighted, almost a year ago, when
I received your information. And yes, it’s something
that I have given a lot of thought to since becoming
your pastor.
For the past few years, Highwater has shared
in a Lenten series with St. John’s UCC in Newark
and the United Church of Granville (formerly First
Baptist Church). I even participated in leading the
series two years ago while an intern at St. John’s.
This year, we join together with our partner churches
to offer a new series. This series does not follow a
video or a book. You don’t have to read ahead or
prepare, other than to open yourself to a new experience of the Holy Spirit.
On the four Wednesdays in Lent, we’ll join
together from 6-8 pm to share a potluck meal, and to
learn and grow. Nan Weir, a Columbus-based spiritual director and retreat leader, will guide us through
a time of prayer, meditation on scripture, and spiritual practice. We will all learn new “tricks”—new
ways to open ourselves to the reality of God, the
mercy of Christ, and the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
Each night, Nan and the host pastor will lead a discussion, and then you will be offered a choice of two
practices intended to help you grow spiritually. The
choices will vary from week to week, following a
course Nan has developed. I will be learning right
beside you, and hope to pick up some things that we
can continue together as Lent passes by and we continue through the year.
A number of you have remarked to me that
you want to be fed in new ways, and that you want to
experience things in a new way, moving beyond
what we are able to capture in our normal modes of
worship. What we are offering here is fresh and exciting. Please plan to be a part of it!
Peace, Pastor Scott

Just a note from the Stewardship Ministry
We have a new minister, our choir is singing beautiful music again, and our church
is planning for exciting times
ahead. With all the positives
that are happening, the church
council presented a budget that
was approved by the congrega“I am about to do a new thing…” tion that increased expenses.
Isaiah 43:19
However, at this time, giving is
about 15% below our budgeted
giving expectations. This is not something to be alarmed about, but
if we continue this trend, things may need to be trimmed in the future.
$2,630.00 is needed weekly to support our current budget.
As of February 19th we are $3,148.00 Below our budget for 2012.
