Notes from Coach Reed
Dear Bishop Ireton Families and Alumni,
As we prepare to begin the 2012 season, all players and coaches are excited to get started.
Bishop Ireton has a tremendous pool of talent to draw from, as proven by the Cross Country team’s
State Championship title and the success of our Football program. Since October, those student
athletes not competing in fall sports have been working in the weight room to improve their strength
and stamina.
This year we are focusing on the three F's - Faith, Fight, and Fortitude. Faith, believe in the
system, your team, your coaches. Fight, never give up, until the buzzer sounds. Fortitude, sometimes
things don't go our way and we might have a few bad games. Keep a positive mental attitude, because
at the end of the day it's only a game.
Several BIMLaxers played in summer and fall lacrosse. BI
Men’s lacrosse was well represented on the summer Alexandria
Travel team, coached by Bill Russ (BI, ’89). Seven BIMLaxers played
fall lacrosse on the team guided by Coach Reed, with outstanding
results. The team finished 2nd at Laxtoberfest Champions of Fall Ball
against a very strong EC Glass team, and 3rd in the MadLax Capital
Classic. Their only loss came at the hands of St. Mary's Ryken, the
eventual champions.
We conducted Fall conditioning from October through early
December. We've had 30+ young men in the weight room on some
nights and I'm proud of their commitment. We have shut down for the holidays. All student athletes
received a workout packet to keep themselves in shape through the winter. Being physically fit is the
key to any great lacrosse team.
We kicked off the inaugural Bishop Ireton Winter Lacrosse League on the 3rd of December. Eight
local High School teams compete on Fannon Field. Games go every Saturday except the Christmas and
New Years weekends, through January. Alumni laxers are encouraged to come to Fannon Field over the
holidays and shoot/play before the 11:00 am game or after the 2:00 pm game. Freshmen and
sophomores are also competing in the Young Guns league at Carl Sandburg Middle School every Sunday.
Save the date for a parents and players pre-season coordination meeting on Wednesday, January 18,
2012, from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm in the Cafeteria. We will finalize all roster contact information, review
the tryout process, the Varsity and JV schedules and discuss volunteer requirements for the season.

The LAST BIMLax Spirit Pack order will be placed on January 7, 2012. Order forms and CHECKS
must be mailed to Coach Reed at Bishop Ireton BEFORE January 6, 2012. He will also be near the weight
room after school on January 6th to collect order forms and checks. Only complete spirit packs may be
ordered. Checks should be made out to BIHS, with “BI Men’s Lax” on the memo line. All players MUST
wear BI shirts/shorts/sweats and sweat pants. ONLY BI outerwear is authorized. BI gym shorts and
shirts are more than acceptable.
We have decided not to hold a fund raiser this year. Instead, we are asking for direct donations
to the BI Men’s Lacrosse program. The cost of equipment is an obstacle to some of our student
athletes. Due to a very generous individual donation, we have purchased ten helmets for issue to
players. This year I’d like to expand our gear issue to include gloves, arm pads, sticks and chest
protectors. Please consider making a donation to the BI Men’s Lax program. Please make all checks
payable to BIHS; on the memo line, add “BI Men’s Lax Donation.” Last year two first year players, using
donated/loaned equipment, started for and contributed significantly to, our teams and program. With
your help, we can expand the program and reap the rewards. Our student athletes only get one chance
to play high school sports. Lacrosse can open doors for them. Thank you in advance for your generous
support.
Notes from Coach Blaine
We currently have 76 student athletes in the Men’s lacrosse program. Our academic goal this
year is to finish the season with a collective 3.3 or higher GPA for the entire Men’s Lacrosse program.
Hit the books and do your part!
On November 19th, eleven Cardinal lacrosse and football players donated their time and effort
to refurbish a playground for the Child and Family Network Center in Alexandria. They moved about 3
tons of mulch from a parking lot into the playground area to ensure the children had a safe place to
play. Thank you. Well done gentlemen!

Many of our laxers participated in fall sports. Many more are participating in our Basketball,
Hockey, Swimming and Diving and Wrestling programs this winter. Compete well gentlemen!
Due to the growth of the Men’s Lacrosse program at BI, we will limit JV participation to
Freshmen and Sophomores. All grades will compete for spots on the Varsity. BIMLax is no longer a “no
cut” sport. Try outs begin on February 20th; details will be provided during the January Parents and
Players meeting. ALL players MUST have a 2012 Virginia Sports Physical, a signed Concussion form and
a completed ImPACT test on file with our trainer BEFORE starting tryouts. In January, we will publish
dates/time/locations for ImPACT testing (used to establish a brain base line in case of concussion).
The NCAA released its annual Graduation Success Rate (GSR) Report for Division 1 programs in
October. Men’s lacrosse players had a GSR rate of 88%, tied with gymnastics for highest among sports, and
had the 3rd highest federal graduation rate of 73% (December 2011 Lacrosse Magazine). If you want to
increase your son’s chances of graduating from college, let them Lax!
Kiss:

The Arts
Bishop Ireton is blessed with Salesian Spirituality
as well as great academics, sports and music programs.
Anyone who excelled in all four areas might be considered
a Renaissance man, a person who is well educated or who
excels in a wide variety of subjects or fields.[3] Leon Battista
Alberti (1404–1472): believed that "a man can do all things
if he will." Renaissance humanism considered humans
empowered, limitless in their capacities for development,
and led to the notion that people should embrace all
knowledge and develop their capacities as fully as possible.
Several BIMLaxers are also accomplished musicians and might be considered Renaissance men. BIMLax
Concert Band members include: Jack Beer, Max Perconti, Dylan Louison, Cliff Louison, Stephen Gerke,
Joe Ready, Will Rodger and Michael Moseley. BIMLax Symphonic Wind Ensemble members include:
Alex Carpenter (’12), Peter Kaye (’13), Doug Lorge (’12) and Ben Gerke (’12).

Senior defenseman Ben Gerke also played the part of Lucentio,
the 2 male lead, in the BI fall production of William Shakespeare’s The
Taming of the Shrew. Will Rodger (’12) served as the Student
Technical Director, also helping with sound, stage and special effects.
