Welcome
Welcome to the Harbin School of Healing Arts. The School is known throughout the world as a premiere
learning center for aquatic and land bodywork therapies and is the only school that has state accredited
aquatic bodywork certification programs for Watsu®, Waterdance® and Healing Dance®.
Classes are offered in a residential intensive format that allows the student to become totally immersed in the
learning process. This gives each student a wonderful opportunity for personal and professional growth. Because of the uniqueness of our programs and curriculum, students come to the School for a variety of learning
opportunities, including the beginning of a new career in the healing arts, continuing education to broaden
their skills as a professional body worker and for the experience of personal growth.
About this Handbook
The Catalog for the Harbin School of Healing Arts, here in after referred to as the School, states the School
policies. The Student Handbook describes how students are to adhere to School policies and provides helpful
information about taking classes. Any corrections to the Catalog are documented in the Revisions section of
this Handbook and in the Catalog correction page on the School website.
Before starting your first class of the year, you will receive the Student Handbook. Please sign the Student
Handbook Receipt and give it to the Registrar before the last day of class. If you take any other classes during
the year, please check with the Registrar for any revisions to the Student Handbook. You may also download
the latest version of the Student Handbook from the School website at any time.
History
The Harbin School of Healing Arts was established in 1979 as the Niyama School of Healing Arts at Harbin
Hot Springs in Middletown, CA. In 1985, it was purchased by Harold Dull and renamed the School of Shiatsu
and Massage. In June 1994, ownership was transferred to the Worldwide Aquatic Bodywork Association
(WABA). Note that although classes have always been held at Harbin Hot Springs facilities, at times the School
was a separate entity from Harbin.
From 1979 to 2001, the School has rented Harbin workshop spaces and pools for its classes. From 2001 to
2006, the School was the sole tenant of the Watsu Center facility at Harbin, and held its land and water
classes in its unique domes and pools. In 2007, the Watsu Center facility was returned to Harbin to be used
for hotel guests. It has been renamed the Harbin Domes. The School has returned to renting other workshop
spaces on Harbin property for its classes (which may include the pools at the Harbin Domes). In 2008, WABA
sold the School to the Bodywork Career Institute, LLC. In 2013, BCI sold the School of Shiatsu and Massage to
The Heart Consciousness Church, dba Harbin Hot Springs. Harbin Hot Springs renamed the school to The
Harbin School of Healing Arts.

Student Code of Conduct & Ethics
Students are expected:
1. To maintain high standards of personal and academic integrity.
2. To treat all members of the School community with respect, goodwill and concern for their well-being.
3. To show respect and care for the personal belongings, property of others and that of the School and
Harbin Hot Springs.
4. To follow ALL rules of Harbin Hot Springs posted and/or verbally addressed by Harbin staff.
5. To honor and follow directives of a school official as applicable and requested.
6. Never to behave in any manner that may be harmful or disruptive to the learning environment, to the
school’s reputation or the reputation of the bodywork profession.
7. It is our intention to create an environment that totally supports the learning experience. In order to
avoid distractions, we ask that students refrain from sexual involvement with other students or school
staff during the period of the training.
8. If you come into the course with a partner, please be sensitive and exercise discretion concerning the
expression of your relationship.
9. It is the policy of the School that instructors, assistants and interns must not become involved sexually
with any of the students. We request that you disclose to the School Director any information about
inappropriate actions by an instructor, an assistant or an intern.
10. Violations of ethical boundaries will not be tolerated, and may be cause for immediate dismissal
from the class and/or School.
11. In all personal interchanges the students are requested to be respectful of other student’s physical and
emotional space. Students who are deemed to be acting inappropriately (this being decided by a
consensus of instructors and assistants) will be either warned or dismissed from the class (this being
decided by a consensus of instructor and school administrator) depending upon the nature of the in
discretion. In the case of a dismissal, tuition will be refunded according to the Refund policy stated in
the School catalogue.
12. Avoid any interest, activity or influence that might be in conflict with the instructor’s obligation to act
in the best interests of the student or the profession.
13. Respect other students’ boundaries with regard to privacy, disclosure, exposure, emotional expression,
beliefs and their reasonable expectations of professional behavior.
14. There might be times when you do not wish to give or receive bodywork from a particular fellow
student. This may be due to personal, interpersonal or other reasons and/or boundaries, whether
known or inexplicable. You have the right of refusal, and may exercise this if needed. Please note that
excessive refusal may prompt immediate instructor or staff intervention and academic counsel.
15. Acknowledge and respect the limitations and contraindications for massage and bodywork when you
are working with your classmates and treat them as if they are clients.
16. Remember that it is your and your fellow students’ right to request and/or to provide additional
draping according to the other students’ level of comfort and/or need for privacy.

Follow all policies, procedures, guidelines, and codes, requirements and School regulations that are advocated by the Harbin School of Healing Arts.
The School reserves the right to amend these policies at any time as deems necessary.
Grounds for dismissal include (but are not limited to):
• Use of alcohol and/or nonprescription drugs
• Possessing a weapon or posing a safety hazard
• Being disruptive or disrespectful to others
• Theft or willful neglect of property and/or equipment
• Inappropriate intimacy in or around the class facility
• Violation of Student Code of Conduct agreement.
Attendance Requirements
All coursework at Harbin School of Healing Arts is based on hours and it is required by the state that all hours
are attended in order to receive credit. There are no credits offered for experiential learning. To graduate, a student must participate in, and satisfactorily complete the entire course. 95% attendance is required. If class
time is missed, make-up time will be required.
Punctuality Policy
Lateness is a disruption to a good learning environment and is discouraged. Students are expected to arrive
shortly before class begins. Lateness is considered anything exceeding 15 minutes after the time class is scheduled
to begin. All tardiness will be accumulated and may result in required make-up time or dismissal from the class.
Registration
All students are required to register for a class prior to arriving at the School. We encourage you to register at
least two weeks before the beginning of the class.
To be registered for a class, the School must receive the following:
• Registration Form (up to three classes per form)
• Paid Deposit for each class
Additionally, the following must be completed once each calendar year:
• Enrollment Agreement
You may Register Online at the School website to complete the Registration Form. A $100.00 deposit will hold
your spot in the class ($200.00 for 100 hour classes).
You may also call or email the school to get a Catalog packet that includes all Registration forms. You may
then fax or mail the forms to us. Please ensure that we receive the forms and deposits at least two weeks before the class begins.

Final Payment
Pay by10 days prior to the beginning of the class and receive a 5% discount. For example if the class starts on
a Sunday evening pay on the Friday 10 days before.If you have to register within two weeks of a class, you
must arrange for Final Payment as soon as you receive the Registration Confirmation notice.
If your Final Payment has not been received in time, the School reserves the right to immediately cancel your
registration. Your deposit will not be refunded if cancellation is less than two weeks before class begins.
You will receive a Registration Confirmation notice by email or letter detailing the Final Payment amount. It is
your responsibility to contact the school and make this payment:
• Email: reply to the Registration Confirmation notice authorizing Final Payment using the Online
Registration credit card.
• Phone: authorize Final Payment to the Online Registration credit card. Or give a different credit card
number, expiration date and vcode.
• Mail: mail a check or money order.
Note: DO NOT send credit card information by email. DO NOT send cash in the mail.
What to Bring
• Food to prepare your own meals. Basic packaged and fresh foods can be found at the Harbin Market or at
Hardester’s in Middletown. You can also purchase breakfast or dinner in the Harbin restaurant or lunch in
the Harbin Market. If you need to blend your food, please bring your own blender.
• Sleeping bag or bedding. Warm bag or extra bedding for winter camping
• Air mattress sleeping pad for indoor or outdoor camping
• Tent for outdoor camping
• Towel
• Pillow
• Swimsuit for water classes
• Flashlight
• Batteries
• Walking Shoes
• Slippers
• Regular Clothing and Class Clothing: Regular clothing for wearing outside of class time, and clothing that
you won’t mind getting oily in class (massage classes only)
• Earplugs for sound (foam or putty or silicone)
• Earplugs to prevent water from entering your ears (putty or silicone)
• Nail Clippers and File to keep fingernails short and smooth for massage
• Shower shoes
• Calling card
• Robe especially if you are in a water class in winter
• Rain Gear and Warm Clothing in winter months
• Sunscreen and Sunglasses in summer months
• A set of twin sheets and a pillowcase for all land classes and the Fluidics class
• A light, clean, soft twin-size blanket for additional optional draping in massage classes

Arrival/Departure
You may want to arrive at Harbin Hot Springs before your class begins to enjoy the surrounding nature or soak
in the hot spring pools, and to set up your campsite if you are camping. Your arrival time at Harbin Hot
Springs and accessibility to the classroom depends on which type of class you are taking:
• All 16.5/25/50 Hour Land or Water Classes: May arrive any time after 12:00 pm, classroom available at
6:00 pm. Must remove all belongings from workshop facility by 1:00 pm on the last day of class.
• 100 hour Land Class: Monday (first day of class), may arrive any time after 8:00am, classroom available
at 12:00pm. Must remove all belongings from workshop facility by 5:00 pm on the last day of class.
You may arrive at Harbin prior to these days and times, but you must pay the normal Harbin fees, directly to
Harbin.
When first arriving at Harbin, park to the right of the Gatehouse. Tell the gate person your name and the class
that you are attending. You will be given a parking pass that needs to remain on your dashboard during your
class and directions to where your class is taking place.
You must depart Harbin by 10:00pm on the day your class ends. You may stay longer at Harbin, but you must
pay the normal Harbin fees, directly to Harbin.
Accommodations
Accommodations included in your class fee are:
• Indoor Camping: Shared group co-educational housing means that floor space is provided for both
genders, in a large, open room within the facility where the class is held. You are welcome to bring your
sleeping gear and make yourself comfortable each night. However, in the morning all your sleeping gear
must be stored to allow space for the class to meet.
• Outdoor Camping: If you prefer privacy or the splendid company of deer and wild turkeys, camping is
available at no extra charge. Bring your own tent and sleeping gear.
Contact Harbin Hot Springs at 707-987-2477 if you are interested in staying in a private room during your
class. We recommend that you make your reservation with Harbin Hot Springs as soon as possible. Note that
you pay Harbin Hot Springs directly for your private room, and that the cost of a private room is not part of
your class fee.
General Information
• There is a strict fire ban at on all Harbin Hot Springs property. No open flames of any kind are permitted,
including candles, incense and any cooking stoves.
• Smoking is only permitted in designated areas.
• Outdoor camping: Upon arrival at the Gatehouse, you will receive a tent pass and shown where you
may set up your tent and other equipment.

• Indoor camping: You must bring a sleeping pad and sleeping bag. You will sleep in your classroom at
night. In the morning, you must gather up your belongings and move them neatly to the edges of the
room before class begins.
• Valuables. Keep any valuables locked in your car.
• Swimsuits required at all times during water classes and practice sessions.
• Cover the pools when you are the last person leaving.
• Shower with soap each time before entering a pool and each time after going to the bathroom.
• Keep your voices and noise to a minimum during sessions, classes, and after 10:00pm and before 6:00am.
• Do not move or tamper with school equipment such as clocks, massage tables, appliances or thermostats without asking first.
• Harbin access is included in your tuition. Harbin Mainside pools are meditation pools, not conversation
areas, so please follow the Harbin’s rules and guidelines posted around the Mainside pool areas. To
avoid parking congestion, please carpool or take the trail.
• There are many activities during the week to enjoy at Harbin outside of your class times. Please see the
weekly events schedule for details.
• Do not keep food in your tent or in the lockers. It attracts wild animals and insects.
• Beware of rattlesnakes, deer ticks and scorpions.
• No open glass or food in the classrooms or the pools.
• Only closed, unbreakable water bottles are allowed in the classrooms or at the pools.
• Practicing bodywork is encouraged, but no money shall change hands for bodywork performed between
students.
• Instructors, qualified staff or teaching assistants may provide paid professional bodywork sessions. All
must have liability insurance information on file at the School.

About Harbin Hot Springs
Harbin Hot Springs is one of the most unique residential retreat
facilities in the country. In its own secluded mountain valley, the
1700-acre site is abundant with trees, meadows, clean air, streams
and wildlife. Once healing grounds for Native Americans and,
later, a famous turn-of-the-century resort, it is now home to a
community of over 150 people who maintain it as a retreat and
learning center.
Harbin is home of the Heart Consciousness Church which upholds
the philosophy that everyone is free to follow one’s own spiritual
path. It is the ideal setting for the caring, growth-centered touch that
our programs facilitate.
Some of Harbin’s attractions include numerous hiking trails, daily
yoga classes, a sauna and of course the famous mineral pools,
which are spring-fed and heated by natural geothermal activity.
There are two body temperature pools, one hot pool (113 degrees F),
one cold pool and one large unheated swimming pool. People
from all over the world come to enjoy Harbin’s mineral pools
where swimsuits and clothing are optional. “Clothing optional”
means that personal expression, acceptance and safety are valued
above all else and that you always have the right to choose
whether or not to be nude.
Guidelines for a Bodywork Intensive
Time
An intensive is intense! You will be in a communal, structured learning environment for 50 class hours in a
five-day period or 100 class hours in an eleven-day period. Typically, there is additional practice, study, personal care, and recreation that add substantially to those hours. We recommend that you come well rested
and to leave your personal and work related worries behind. Experienced students suggest that you pay the
extra fees and arrive at Harbin one day before your class begins, to prepare yourself for what is to come and
stay on one day after your class ends, to integrate what you have experienced and prepare to go back into the
world with your new knowledge.
Sleep
Getting adequate rest and good nutrition is extremely important during class time. No cot or bedding is provided so bring whatever you need to sleep comfortably- including earplugs if you are a light sleeper. For our
own peace and the peace of fellow students, we request quiet from 10:00pm until 7:00am. Likewise, we request that no alarm clocks ring or loud noises be made while others are still sleeping in the early morning. If
you are a night owl or an early riser, there are other locations to socialize, read, etc.

Attentiveness
Your quality of attention in class will make an enormous difference in how much you retain. Taking “power
nap” during an afternoon break can keep your mind fresh for the afternoon session. Another way to increase
retention is to simulate the movements of the instructor during the demonstration and visualize the sequence
before going to sleep. Having a class buddy to review the day’s material or utilizing the class assistants will
enhance your learning. Sometimes academic information can be overwhelming and it is appropriate to set
realistic goals. Many years are typically required to become proficient in any skill and massage is no different.
Remember, we all begin our journey from a different place, so try not to compare yourself to others. If you
find that a course is particularly challenging, consider auditing it as you may learn even more the second
time.
Water Classes
Aquatic bodywork classes can be especially draining on your physical body. Hydration, skin moisturizing and
ear care are especially important. Speak to your instructor and assistants immediately if you begin to experience any discomfort. You will also receive a class manual that will describe self-care procedures so that you
can concentrate on learning.
Meals
Students can prepare their own meals or eat at the
Harbin or Middletown facilities. For meal preparation,
students can use their class room building kitchen,
pots, pans, utensils and refrigerator to store and cook
their meals. Students are responsible for cleaning up
after all meals. You may bring your own food if you
want to prepare your own meals.
You can also buy food, organic produce, snacks,
condiments, etc. at:
- Harbin Market (open 9am to 8pm, seven days
a week)
- Stores in Middletown (10 minutes away,
hours vary)
Students can buy meals at these Harbin facilities:
- Harbin Restaurant: Breakfast 8am to 10am, Dinner 6pm to 8pm
- Harbin Market: Lunch available after 12:00 Noon; snacks and prepared food 9am to 8pm
- Harbin Blue Room Cafe: snacks and espresso drinks, 7am to 6pm
- La Sirena Poolside Cafe: sandwiches, salads, smoothies, May to Sept, Noon to 5pm (closed in winter)
Middletown has many restaurants available for breakfast, lunch and dinner. A list of places and hours will be
given to you at your class orientation.

Training Program Certificates
Students are welcome to take one, two or a series of classes that interest them, without being required to set
up and commit to a formal program of study. If a desire develops to complete a Training Program Certificate,
completed classes can be used to satisfy required or elective class requirements. But a student can also set up
a plan to complete a Training Program Certificate program, using the Certificate Worksheet form.
To become a proficient bodyworker, it is reasonable to estimate 500 to 1000 hours of training and a year’s
worth of practice. Prior to registering for classes with the School, students are encouraged to check with
their local state, city or county ordinances for licensing requirements and the number of hours they require
in bodywork training in order to set up practice within these areas.
Students can tailor most of the Training Program Certificate classes to suit their interests as long as they
participate in all required classes and choose from a wide range of land and water electives. Please refer to the
elective requirements of each training program.

* Only the California Massage Therapy Council (CAMTC) can issue Massage Practitioner and Massage Therapist Certificates, which
allow you to practice massage anywhere in California. Our certificates indicate that you completed our training program, which makes
you eligible to receive the CAMTC certificate.
Water Training Program Certificates
The Harbin School of Healing Arts offers the following Water Training Program Certificates. The required total
hours for each certificate is divided into Class hours and Practicum hours. The Practicum consists of documented Practice Sessions and documented Received Sessions from certified Practitioners. Every Water Certificate program requires at least one Demonstration of Mastery.

Training Program Certificate Worksheet Form
Use the Training Program Certificate Worksheet Form to plan and track the required and elective classes that
you need to complete a training program certificate. There is also a section for the Practicum needed for Water
Training Program Certificates. The Training Program Certificate Worksheet is an informal document for you to
use. Your transcript, Practicum & DOM documentation and Certificate Request are the required formal documents to be reviewed by the School before you receive a Training Program Certificate.
Requesting a Training Program Certificate
A student must give, mail or fax a Training Program Certificate Request form to the School when nearing the
completion of the required class hours. For Water Certificates, the student must also submit the required
Practicum and Demonstration of Mastery documentation.
The School may take up to two weeks to process a Training Program Certificate Request. This time is needed to
verify your school records and any required documentation. Therefore, please submit your request at least two
weeks before the last class that completes the class hours for your program certificate.
Practicum Documentation
Every Water Training Program Certificate requires Practicum hours to be documented using the following
forms.
Session Form (for Water Practice sessions):
• Prior to giving a water practice session, you must give the Session Form to your practice client to read
and sign.
• After the session, the practice client can add additional feedback to the form.
• You must collect one Session Form for each practice session that you give, even if you give multiple
practice sessions to one practice client.
• Note that a Practice Session Log is available for your convenience to keep track of your practice
sessions. Do not submit this log for your certificate; only submit the Session Forms.
Received Session Log:
• Each entry in this log must be completed and signed by a Certified Practitioner
• You will usually have to pay the Certified Practitioner for each received session.
• It is your responsibility to verify that the Practitioner is a Certified Practitioner prior to receiving a
session. Check the WABA Registry at www.waba.edu or contact the School if you are not sure. The
School will disallow any Received Session that was not received from a Certified Practitioner.
• Exception: each Healing Dance program certificate allows you to receive up to four sessions from a peer
student.

Submitting your Practicum Documentation:
When you have completed your practicum:
• Make a copy of each the Session Form and the Received Session Log. The School is not responsible for
the loss of your documentation if you send your only copy.
• Mail the copies to the School or give the copies to Registrar at the School. DO NOT FAX Practicum
documentation to the School. Faxed documents can be illegible and the quantity of paper can jam the
fax machine.
Demonstration of Mastery Documentation
Every Water Training Program Certificate requires at least one Demonstration of Mastery (DOM):
• It is your responsibility to verify with the School that the person you are giving a DOM is authorized to
receive the DOM. Contact the School for a list of authorized people. The School will disallow any DOM
given to an unauthorized person.
• Check your Training Program Certificate requirements for when you can schedule a DOM. For example,
you must pass Watsu 2 and document 20 practice sessions before giving the DOM for the Watsu
Therapist Certificate.
• Depending on the Certificate, a DOM may be given as part of a class audit or a paid supervision session.
Check with the Registrar.
• After giving a successful DOM, the authorized person must complete and sign the DOM form, and then
enter the DOM into your WABA Registry.
• Make a copy of the DOM form.
• Mail the copy to the School or give the copy to the Registrar. The School is not responsible for the loss of
your documentation if you send your only copy. DO NOT FAX.

Credit Transfer Process
The Harbin School of Healing Arts accepts the transfer of credits from State Licensed Schools or approved
higher education institutions (example: Colleges and Universities) on a case by case basis for completed
course with a C or higher grade. Up to 50% of the class hour requirements for a program may be satisfied by
the transfer of credits.
To apply for a Credit Transfer you must supply the following:
• A completed Credit Transfer Form.

• Payment of Credit Transfer fees to the Harbin School of Healing Arts. The Credit Transfer fee is $2.00
per each credit hour transferred into a student’s record. Payment can be made by Visa, MasterCard,
American Express, Discover, check, money order or cash (do not send cash in the mail).
If the transcripts or certificates do not indicate the number of credited hours, a letter from the accredited institution must state the content, grade and the number of hours give in each course. The School does not award
life experience credit.
The School will review your paperwork and process the fee payment if the Credit Transfer is accepted.

STATEMENT TO BE READ BY, AND AGREED TO, BEFORE RECEIVING A PRACTICE SESSION FROM
A STUDENT:
I understand that a session of any form of Aquatic Bodywork can be powerful and have profound effects, that when the
body arrives at the level of relaxation possible in warm water and its normal tension holding patterns are released, there
can, occasionally, be reactions that can cause momentary discomfort. I also understand that being held as close as is required while being floated, can bring up issues that people have about intimacy. I understand that receiving a session in
any kind of bodywork from a student always involves a slight risk. I willingly accept that risk and hold no one else responsible for anything that happens to me in my session. Ideally, the kind of heart space the session will help me into,
and its continuity, will help me let go whatever comes up into its flow. I understand there have been no medical claims
made for this session. I will give feedback the moment anything is uncomfortable. I will let the student know anytime my
head, neck, back, etc., do not feel adequately supported. I understand that when I am brought to the end of a session, I
am not required to immediately give feedback. I understand that constructive feedback can be very valuable for a student. If I choose not to talk about the session I just received, I will send a note giving feedback afterwards.

after a student completes the applicable educational program. For occupations for which the state
requires passing an examination, the period of employment shall begin within six months of the
announcement of the examination results for the first examination available after a student
completes an applicable educational program.

“Placement Rate is calculated by dividing the number of graduates gainfully employed in the field
by the number of graduates available for employment.
Any student may obtain, from the Harbin School of Healing Arts, a list of the employment positions
determined to be within the field for which a student received education and training for the
calculation of job placement rates.
