LEVEL ASSESSMENT
The City of Arlington’s Learn to Swim Program follows the American Red Cross Swim and Water Safety Program. We assess
each child on the first day of class to help with accurate placement of the child in the correct level. If possible, we will move
the child to a level that best suits his or her skill level. If a child is registered in the incorrect class, every effort will be made to
place them into a class of an appropriate level but cannot be guaranteed.
We ask parents to help assist us with registering their child in the correct level by talking to their child’s instructor from the
previous session and/or following the guidelines below.

CAMPCLIFF
Summer is arriving and the CNRC has camps for all things fun and interesting! Oh, your kid just weirded you out by correcting
your navigation just from using the stars in the sky? That’s awesome and we think they’ll enjoy our Space Camp.
So maybe you thought at first your kid just had a sweet tooth, but now they’re mixing candies together and discussing flavors
like aficionados and using big words like “palate” and “confection” whilst quoting Willy Wonka like a philosopher? Okay,
now that’s weird…but we have our Candy Factory Camp for them as well.
And we have a whole lot more mini camps designed for ages 3-12 to choose from. Sign your kids up for a morning camp
or afternoon camp and then spend the other half of the day with them! Check out pages 31-37 for all of our camp listings.

Opened in 1998, and carved from 250 acres of secluded
terrain, the course’s unsurpassed layout encompasses
a variety of natural settings and offers an outstanding
playing experience on every hole. The course has been
host to many prestigious events, including the Byron
Nelson Qualifying Tournament on multiple occasions.
Tierra Verde was named the top golf course in the DFW
Metroplex in 2012 by Avid Golfer magazine.*
Each hole has five sets of tees, sculpted fairways,
strategically placed sand bunkers and water hazards - all
accented by stately trees and beautiful native grasses.
The facility features a state-of-the-art golf learning center,
a lighted driving range, three-hole practice course and
large chipping and putting green complex. Also offered
are lessons and clinics taught by PGA/LPGA professionals
and apprentices, an outdoor pavilion and full-service
restaurant, Ventana Grille, that complement every
event from small corporate outings to large fundraising
tournaments.
Named after life-long resident of Arlington Chester W.
Ditto, Ditto Golf Course is located in north Arlington, just
15 minutes from the DFW airport and near the heart of
Arlington’s Entertainment District, featuring the Texas
Rangers, Dallas Cowboys and Six Flags.
As a long-standing favorite among golfers in the DallasFort Worth area, Chester Ditto is 18-holes of challenging
golf blending plush fairways narrowed by trees and
accented with strategically placed sand bunkers and
landing areas.
A driving range, practice putting green and chipping
area are offered to complete one’s golfing experience.
The clubhouse offers snack bar concessions and a full
line pro shop with today’s most popular equipment
and apparel. Chester Ditto also offers tournaments and
private and group lessons taught by PGA Professionals
and Apprentices.
Chester Ditto was named one of Avid Golfer’s Top 40
DFW public courses in 2012, as the publication noted that
“course reputation is on a big upswing.”

Lake Arlington Golf Course is a beautiful 18-hole facility
nestled on 185 acres on the north shore of Lake Arlington.
The course was designed with all types of players in mind
and with the newly renovated fairways and greens,
the course provides a great golfing experience at an
exceptional value.
Lake Arlington’s time-honored design blends open and
tree-lined fairways, long challenging par 3’s and scenic
greens to appeal to every level of player. A challenge
for the professional as well as the beginner, the four sets
of tees, ranging from 5,485 yards to 6,637, provides a fair
playing field that appeals to every level of proficiency.
The clubhouse features a well stocked pro shop and
grill. Lake Arlington’s combination of enjoyable golf,
convenient location and professional staff create the
perfect setting for group outings and tournaments.
The course offers challenging golf along with a practice
putting green and chipping area at an exceptional
value.
Avid Golfer ranked Lake Arlington in its list of the top-60
courses in DFW last year, specifically mentioning that the
“lack of homes on the course makes you feel far away
from the Metroplex.”

MEADOWBROOK PARK
Arlington’s tradition of outstanding golf began in the
1920’s with Meadowbrook Park. Conveniently located
just east of downtown Arlington, the golf course provides
an excellent choice for families and leagues.
Meadowbrook Park is the perfect facility to learn the
game of golf and sharpen short-game skills. The 9-Hole,
par-33 layout consists of six par 4s, 250 to 300 yards in
length, and three par 3s, approximately 150 yards in
length. Due to its shorter length, Meadowbrook is easily
played when under time constraints.
Its small greens and narrow fairways are designed to
challenge every level of player and is fun for the whole
family.
The clubhouse offers a full line pro shop, concessions,
and golf cart rentals.
Exclusive facility rental opportunities are available for
both golf and non-golf outdoor activities.
With a long-standing commitment to environmental
enhancement and preservation, Meadowbrook Park
Golf Course is like a walk in the park for the whole family!

TENNIS STAFF SPOTLIGHT
ATC STAFF DRAWS STATE RECOGNITION
Two members of the Arlington Tennis Center staff were recently recognized by the United States Tennis Association (USTA)
for their efforts in growing the sport through the 10 and Under youth initiatives. Sheryl Osborn, Lisa Osborn and the entire ATC
staff have been instrumental in creating a welcoming environment for junior tennis players of all skill levels with the recent
addition of six 10 and Under courts and specific programming and instruction for younger players.
ATC facility manager Sheryl Osborn
recently received recognition for the
second year in a row from the USTA
for her efforts in growing tennis in the
Arlington community.
Sheryl was also awarded the Tennis
Across America honor from the United
States Professional Tennis Association
– Texas for organizing free community
tennis events that have reached
nearly 2,000 people in the last three
years alone.
50
Teaching professional Lisa Osborn
(pictured above) was selected to
represent north and central Texas on
the 10 and Under Sub Committee for
the USTA Texas Section. Osborn, a top
level teaching professional at ATC,
has served on the USTA Texas Junior
Tennis Council (JTC) since 2008.
Texas leadership tapped Lisa for
the five-member 10 and Under Sub
Committee because of her expertise,
knowledge and involvement with
Texas tennis, specifically 10 and Under
programs. USTA Texas is a national

leader in 10 and Under tennis, and the
Sub Committee will be charged with
evaluating the nationally recognized
pathway established by USTA Texas in
2011.
Responsibilities will include review
of program facts and figures, as
well as dialogue with providers and
end users (players and parents)
and
formulating
recommended
adjustments to enhance growth in 10

Dory Habenicht’s background in tennis spans more than 60
years. She was an original member of the Arlington Tennis
Association Board of Directors and a driving force behind
the development of junior events when there were only a
few park courts in the area.
Over 40 years ago, Dory organized a group of ladies called
the Tuesday Toughies (who now play at ATC). Another of
her groups, The Golden Girls of Tennis, are on a mission to
attend every Grand Slam at least once.
Dory worked as an usher at the Virginia Slims in the 1970s,
witnessing a teenaged Martina Navratilova making her
mark in the tennis world. She was a Nominating Committee
officer for Tennis Competitors of Dallas (TCD) in the 1990s
and 2000s, and she has played on the same TCD team, The
Fair Ladies, for 35 years. In recent decades, she has served
on the USTA Texas Senior Council. At 79, Dory still plays tennis
almost daily on one of her five various teams, and her USTA
Ladies’ 3.0 team won the Sectional Championship in 2007.
Dory is always all smiles, and she is widely known for her
colorful holiday tennis attire, and for the parties she hosts
for her teams and their opponents each week.
CUSTOMER SPOTLIGHT:
DORY HABENICHT
In 2006, Dory attended ‘An Intimate Evening with Billie Jean
King’ in Dallas. Dory wore her Virginia Slims button from her
usher days, and Billie Jean commented on it. Dory told
Billie Jean how much she admired her for all that she did
for tennis, specifically for women’s tennis. Billie Jean looked
Dory in the eye and responded, “No, you’re MY role model
for still playing!”

NEWS & NOTES
Arlington Athletics Launches New Online Registration System
To improve customer convenience, the Athletics Division launched a new online registration system for all youth sports on
February 1, 2013.
Customers are encouraged to use this self-service technology to improve their registration experience. SportsSignup is an
Internet-based product that will accommodate registration needs 24 hours a day, seven days a week, said Wendy Parker,
Athletics Director.
“Customers will now be able to self-register at their convenience, receive email confirmations and update personal
account information at any time. The new process will eliminate the need for customers to call us or to register by mail, fax
or in person.”
Online registrations for the summer season are being accepted for all youth league sports including t-ball, coach pitch,
soccer, basketball and cheerleading.
The Parks and Recreation Department is excited to streamline the software for youth sports league registrations. Users can
login and create an account by visiting www.naturallyfun.org. For assistance with the new online registration process,
please contact Wendy Parker at 817-459-5463 or email [email protected].

ALWAYS… PATSY CLINE
We believe silliness provides comedy relief for
life and we share a bond of affection forged by
common life experiences. Our official chapter
name of ‘The Arlington Day Dreamers’ enjoy
monthly outings or social events around the
Metroplex destinations or at the Senior Centers.
Our ladies can always be seen clad in their red
hat and clashing purple ensemble as they keep
up the spirit of the Red Hat Society. Houston housewife Louise Seger met singer Patsy
Cline at one of Cline’s concerts. The two formed
a lasting friendship through being pen pals over
the years. This show tells the story of Patsy’s life
through those letters and, of course, the songs
Patsy made famous. Featuring hits Walkin’ After
Midnight and She’s Got You and Crazy to name
a few, this moving tale will remain with you long
after the curtain closes. Dinner will be on your
own at the Olive Garden after the show.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ARLINGTON PUBLIC LIBRARY!
The library will be celebrating its 90th Anniversary throughout
the summer of 2013. Back in 1923, Pearl Wade was the
first librarian in Arlington. She started with a collection of
about 500 books in a corner of the Farmer’s National Bank
downtown. Well-read citizens could visit the library on
Wednesday and Saturday afternoons. See more birthday
celebration information at arlingtonlibrary.com.
GREAT MINDS LIBRARY CARD
The card celebrates the partnership between two great
cities. Libraries in Arlington and Mansfield have joined
forces to offer seamless library services through a shared
online catalog and access to a larger collection of
materials. Downloadable digital collections, enhanced
customer service and technology training are among the
shared resources.

PARK SPOTLIGHTS
CODY ROCAMONTES MEMORIAL
SKATE PARK
Cody Rocamontes was 15 years old and fearless.
The Martin High School sophomore would lug his skateboard
everywhere, jumping steep stairs, rails and ramps without
thinking twice. He and his friends dreamt of someday
starting a public skate park in Arlington.
Just ask 14-year-old George Talevera, of Arlington, who
grew up skating on streets around the city but now hangs
out at the new park almost every weekend.
“It’s a lot safer and a lot more fun,” Talevera said. “We’re
just excited to have a place to skate.”
In August 2009, Cody was struck by a car and killed
while walking near Interstate-20 to one of his favorite
skateboarding stops, a retail parking lot.
Taylor Haster, 18, of Arlington, recalled trying to track
down places to skate, then being kicked out of numerous
business parking lots.
On March 13, 2013, his dream became reality. Cody’s
friends and family gathered with Arlington community
members to dedicate the new Cody Rocamontes
Memorial Skate Park in Randol Mill Park.
“We finally have a home,” she said.
March 13th would have been Cody’s 19th birthday.
The new 5,400-square foot skatepark — which is the first
in Arlington — includes skating and BMX challenges for
beginner and intermediate users.
The first phase of the park includes such features as a
hipped bank, a manual pad with rail, a flat bar and park
builder Spohn Ranch’s signature “skateable art” pieces
Curved Taco and Dragon Trail.
The second phase will include a mellow ledge, stair set
with rail, pole jam, euro gap, kinked hubba, round wall and
bent penny.
On Tuesday, skaters of all levels showed off their moves and
feasted on grilled hot dogs and birthday cake for Cody.
Attendees sang Happy Birthday and released orange
balloons for the teenager’s favorite color.
Before a ribbon cutting, city leaders praised the work of
Cody’s friends and family, who lobbied Arlington City
Council and raised money to build the skate park. They
even established a nonprofit, Cody Rocamontes Inc., and
distributed hundreds of orange shirts all over Arlington.
“We’re here to celebrate the life of Cody,” Arlington Mayor
Robert Cluck said. “We should never forget Cody or his
parents, and we will be reminded of them every time we
come to this park.”
BY SARAH BAHARI, City of Arlington
An estimated 18,000 people in Arlington skateboard more
than once a week, and two-thirds of respondents to a city
survey said they skate on Arlington streets rather than at
skateparks in other cities.
“
Cody would have been beside himself. He would have been here all the time. This is just fabulous.”
KIM GROBE, Mother of Cody Rocamontes

CELEBRATING FIVE YEARS OF FREE MUSIC UNDER THE STARS
The Levitt Pavilion for the Performing Arts in Arlington presents 50 free outdoor concerts a year with a broad-based concert
calendar of professional musical artists, from world music to jazz and country to children’s artists. Audiences can take a
cultural journey exploring international rhythms one night, then sample America’s rich tapestry of musical genres the next.
The Levitt presents original artists, many of them Grammy Award winners. The Children’s Concerts include fun, interactive
shows with artists who teach young audiences gentle lessons about good manners, creativity, self-esteem and the world
around them in a fun way.
Last concert season, the Levitt Pavilion attracted more than 108,000 people to Downtown Arlington. The Levitt Pavilion
experience is about building community as families, school groups, entire neighborhoods and people from all parts of our
area join side by side in a safe, fun, casual atmosphere to enjoy live music together. Many of these families and groups
would not have the opportunity to experience the magic of live music if they had to pay ticket prices.
The Levitt Pavilion gives our community an accessible gathering place for free music open to everyone – all ages, all
ethnicities, all neighborhoods and all income levels. Levitt Pavilion Arlington brings music and the performing arts to Arlington
in a way thousands are responding to – available to everyone to enjoy under the stars. The Levitt Pavilion is located at 100
