Blue Funnel
The perfect venue
for your special day
We are delighted to send you a copy of our wedding brochure. At Blue Funnel we pride
ourselves on our outstanding customer care and attention to detail. All designed to
make your special day perfect.
What better way to spend your reception than on the beautiful Southampton Waters
being catered to by attentive staff and enjoying the best food and entertainment.
We have listed below some helpful tips to keep your timetable running as smoothly as
possible up to your big day.

Set a date for your wedding and decide what type of ceremony you would like, religious or civil. Do
not delay in provisionally booking your church or licensed venue as they can be booked up a long
way in advance

Work out the budget for your wedding and carefully record what each section will be costing you so
you are always aware of where you are financially

Work out your guest list, this is important to do before you book your reception venue so you can be
aware of how many you will be catering for.

Decide what type of reception you would like and provisionally book your venue

Provisionally book your photographer, video and cars

Once you know you have everyone in place for the dates and times of your choice confirm all your
bookings.

Choose your menu as early as possible as you may need to know this for your wedding invites which
should be sent out about 3 months before the ceremony. You may like to include your gift list

Order your wedding cake and wedding favours

Shop for your wedding dress, bridesmaids dresses, shoes, accessories and flowers. Not forgetting
outfits for the groom and best man

Book your appointment with your hairdresser and beautician. If using these services its always a
good idea to have a practise run first

Check your RSVPS and confirm final numbers with your venue organiser

Don’t forget to organise your stag and hen parties in advance if you have large groups

If you are going abroad on honeymoon don’t forget to check that your passport is in date
Wedding Etiquette Information
Top Table - It is traditional to seat everyone on a long table facing the guests. If you choose this more
formal traditional way, the layout is suggested as follows (facing the top table from the left) chief
bridesmaid, groom’s father, bride’s mother, groom, bride, bride’s father, groom’s mother and best man. The
bride & groom’s mother and father can of course sit together if you are more comfortable with this.
If you prefer a more informal set up square tables look attractive and the bride and groom can still be
seated at the top end of the table facing their guests.
A receiving Line – If you would like a receiving line this can be done either on arrival or before seating
guests for the wedding breakfast which is sometimes easier as the bride and groom do not always arrive at
the reception venue first. It is traditional for the order to be, bride’s parents, groom’s parents, bride and
groom, chief bridesmaid and best man. More informally it can be just the bride and groom.
Speeches – It is important to be prepared on the day, not to say you want to read your speech out word
for word from an A4 piece of paper but it is always handy to have some cue cards to remind you of the key
points. The speeches are traditionally given after the meal during coffee but if you are looking for a more
informal approach they can be spaced between each course. This is the order in which they are given - The
bride’s father who will propose a toast and thank everyone for coming during his speech followed by the
groom who also thanks everyone for coming. He will thank the best man and bridesmaids, gifts if desired
are given out at this point to them and those who have assisted with the wedding arrangements. The bride
may like to say a few words, giving her the opportunity to thank all those that have helped her and her
husband have their special day. She is followed lastly by the best man who during his hopefully humorous
and witty speech will read out cards from guests who couldn’t attend. He finishes his speech with a toast
and announces the cutting of the cake.
Lastly here are a few wedding traditions you may like to observe.
Wedding favours - are given out to the guests as a little reminder of your special day, traditionally it is
five of something such as sugared almonds or chocolates. Each one symbolises a different thing, health,
wealth, happiness, long life and fertility.
Wedding dress – we all know its traditional for the groom not to see the dress before the big day. It is
also tradition to wear something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue. ‘Old’
represents the link between the bride and her family that is why a family piece of jewellery is often worn.
‘New’ represents success and good fortune in the brides new life, the wedding dress itself if usually the
‘new’ item. ‘Borrowed’ is often from a friend or family to remind her that they will be there for her when help
may be needed. ‘Blue’ this is the symbol for faithfulness, loyalty, and purity. A favourite ‘blue’ choice is the
garter as often seen in wedding photos!
The bride, standing to the left of the groom leaves his sword arm free and ready to fight off others who may
covert her as their bride
Throw your bouquet; whoever catches it will be next to be married.
Make sure the bride is carried over the threshold of your marital home, this is said to ward off and protect
her from evil spirits.
