Greene School News
Donations Collected
Ms. Mullaghy’s fifth grade class at Greene School
recently read a story about a girl who helped the less
fortunate by starting a soup kitchen and a boy who repaired old bicycles and donated them. The students
were motivated by these examples to also take action
to help the less fortunate. They decorated a donation
box, organized a drive and collected items to be donated
to the poor. The students are learning to be sympathetic
to others in these hard economic times, and to be proactive. We are proud of our compassionate students.

Chicago Public School’s Office of Language and
Cultural Education has acknowledged Greene School
with a plaque for outstanding support to the Bilingual
Advisory Committee (BAC). The BAC has also honored Greene School with a plaque for hosting the Cluster meetings in 2009-10. Ms. Maria Suarez, the Parent
Representative who helped and coordinated the BAC
and the Cluster meetings, was also recognized with a
plaque for perfect attendance to all BAC Cluster meetings in 2009-10.

Santa Lucia School News
“Do the Write Thing”
Each year Santa Lucia students participate in an
essay contest called “Do the Write Thing.” The “Do the
Write Thing” challenge gives students an opportunity
to examine the impact of youth violence in their lives.
Students communicate what they think should be done
to reduce youth violence through their original compositions or poems. These same students make personal
commitments to do something about this problem.
Over 1,000 entries were submitted and 100 finalists
were chosen, including two Santa Lucia students! Seventh grader, Kirk Sarmago and eighth grader, Diondria
Woodhouse were honored with a Recognition Reception. The Final compositions have been published in the
“Do the Write Thing” 2011 Edition Book. Congratulations Kirk and Diondria!

next monthly Call-A-Lawyer program on Saturday,
June 19, 2010, from 9:00
a.m. to noon. Volunteer attorneys will give free legal advice over the phone
to Chicagol a n d residents who call (312) 5542001. Attorneys will be
available to answer general questions on a variety of legal issues including criminal law,
corporate law, estate planning, wills and trusts, general civil litigation, personal injury, and commercial & residential real
estate law.
Callers can explain
their situation to an attorney who will then suggest
self-help strategies to resolve their legal issues. If
callers need further legal
services, they will be advised to see their attorney
or to contact the CBA

Donovan Park Co-Rec 16” Softball League Champions
Donovan Park would like to congratulate B.A.T. on winning the championship in
our Co-Rec 16” Softball League. Not only did they become the reigning champions
of the league, but they did so by defeating the winners of the last 3 seasons, Sacks
& Racks, in a 4 - 3 victory.

Bridgeport Catholic Academy Highlights
On June 3, 2010 Ariel Ojeda became the 5th recipient to receive the Henry
Palmisano Scholarship from Mrs. Sarah Palmisano, mother of Henry and his brother
Steve. Ariel was selected from the seventh grade class of Bridgeport Catholic Academy and will receive a $1000.00 scholarship for next year’s tuition. A scholarship
fund in Mr. Palmisano’s memory was established in June of 2006 to continue his
memory.
Mr. Palmisano was an avid supporter of Bridgeport Catholic Academy from it’s beginning in 1985 until his death in February, 2006. He worked hard to guarantee that
Bridgeport Catholic Academy would succeed as an excellent school. He was active
in various organizations of Bridgeport Catholic Academy, well after his children
graduated. He dedicated himself to ensure that a Catholic education was available to
all students and that our school would be a vital part of the community.

Bridgeport Catholic Academy
Open Enrollment 2010 - 2011
There are limited openings for all grades for the 2010-2011 school year at Bridgeport Catholic Academy for new students. Bridgeport Catholic Academy is fully certified by the State of Illinois and the Archdiocese of Chicago. Bridgeport Catholic
Academy offers a full or half day pre-kindergarten as well as a kindergarten
through eighth grade curriculum. There is a low teacher/student ratio.
Bridgeport Catholic Academy provides a Catholic faith based curriculum centered
on students becoming responsible, lifelong learners. The students of Bridgeport
Catholic Academy have the opportunity for special classes in Art, Music, Band, Computers, Physical Education, Spanish, and Title I Tutoring. There is an active student
council, children’s choir, student patrol, newspaper club, literary magazine, and book
club. Our sports program in our fully equipped gymnasium provides a variety of
competitive and instructional leagues, including volleyball, cheerleading, basketball
and football.
This summer, the Promethean White Board system will be installed throughout
the school. This advancement will integrate 21st Century technology into the classroom to provide a more hands on interactive approach to teaching and learning at
Bridgeport Catholic Academy. There are over 60,000 lessons that the teachers will
be able to use. Parents will be able to view the white boards on July 29, 2010.

Holy Cross "Hot Dog & Apple Pie" Sunday
Holy Cross Lutheran Church will bring back a good old American tradition.... hot
dogs and apple pie! The all-u-can-eat affair will be held on Sunday June 27th and will
begin after our morning worship service at 10:30 am. approximately at 11:45 am. and
will take place in our assembly hall and breezeway outside.
In our efforts to raise awareness and funds for our milestone in the community of
125 years of faithful service in October 2011, we will prepare the very best hot dogs
and apple pie you will enjoy on a Sunday. We plan to offer a variety of hot dogs
cooked various ways and an extra wide selection of trimmings. The apple pie will
also have its own set of scrumptious toppings to choose from. There will be outside
games for children and adults including bean bags.
Bring the whole family and watch some baseball while you relax and enjoy your
neighbor’s fellowship and fun. We will have beautifully decorated summer cakes
available for sale as well. Tickets are $7.00 for adults and $5.00 for kids 12 and
under. We are located at 3116 S. Racine Ave. and you may call our church office for
more information at 773-523-3838. This is a community event and we hope that we
see you and your family there. Best bet for family fun!
McClellan School
McClellan School is very lucky to be part of the WITS Program (Working in the
Schools). This year the White Sox organization worked with Mrs. Cathy Brown’s
4th graders. They came every Tuesday to tutor the students in Reading. They also
went on two field trips, one to the Daley Library and one to U.S. Cellular Field! They
got a tour of the facility, had lunch with their tutors, met the White Sox Mascot South
Paw and had a picture taken with him!
White Sox player, Carlos Quentin and his wife came to visit McClellan School.
They read stories to Mrs. Brown’s class and talked about the importance of getting
an education. They also went around to other classrooms to greet students and staff.
It was a thrill for all!!!
McClellan school is grateful to the White Sox Organization and the WITS program. They appreciate everything they’ve done!

SPRED
Summer is a time of rest and relaxation when we can
take advantage. But it also gives us opportunities of discovering programs that will be offered again in the fall.
SPRED is one of those programs that begins in September and goes through mid-May. At the Archdiocesan
SPRED Center, 2956 South Lowe Avenue, it its a social center. There will be an Informational Gathering
for parents and interested men and women on Monday,
June 28, 7:00 p.m.
We would welcome parents of people with developmental or intellectual disabilities or learning problems
(cognitive impairment) of any age or level of ability.
We also need volunteers to offer a one on one relationship within a small group. No experience is required because training is available in the fall. Volunteer men and
women are people who enjoy others and want to grow
in their faith.
SPRED is a faith development program that helps us
see God's presence in our everyday, ordinary lives. It is
truly beneficial for both our friends with challenges as

again hosted by the McKinley Park Civic Association and William McKinley Post

hard to think about big
remodeling projects. But
with a little imagination
and a small outlay for top

Idea #1: Paint just an
accent wall. Instead of
painting an entire room,
consider painting just one
wall in a different color. A

rail. If your home is

ornamental fretw ork,
flaunt it by painting the
trim in a strong color that
contrasts with the color of
your exterior walls.
