HEZI LEVY
2010 recipient of the Yonatan Netanyahu
Memorial Award for his extraordinary leadership
and advocacy on behalf of Israel’s soldiers
Born in Beersheva, Israel in June of 1953 to newly immigrated
Persian parents Moshe and Evelyn, Hezi Levy is the first born son
in a family of seven children. As a child, he found a greater
challenge outside on the tennis court rather than inside the
school classroom. Hezi was on Israel’s Junior Davis Cup Team
before beginning his service in the IDF in 1970. His first 30 months
were based in the Central Command where he was a Ground Forces Drill Sergeant. During the 1973 War,
Hezi was an administrator for an Air Force squad at the Hatzerim Base.
After completing his military service, he met his wife, Arlene, and they started their life together in Chicago
in 1977. Wasting no time, Hezi embarked upon his own version of the American Dream: teaching tennis at a
record setting 80 hours per week at Lakeshore Athletic Club. Hezi has always maintained close ties with
Israel through philanthropic efforts. In 1978, he began raising money for the Israel Tennis Center, and
followed with the Elan Handicapped Kids on Wheel Chairs. Following bigger dreams for his family, Hezi
began trading at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange in 1984. Working with JUF at the time, Hezi served as the
VP of the Trader Division. In 1992, Hezi found the Friends of the Israel Defense Forces (FIDF) and fell in love
with the cause instantly. Devoting his heart and channeling his unique fundraising talents to the
organization, Hezi has been instrumental both in getting the community involved and working closely with
the IDF to personally ensure the care of Israel’s soldiers. His strong relationships with Air Force Pilots, Major
Generals, and Heads of Staff throughout the IDF have helped the FIDF Central Region grow into the
exemplary chapter it is today. From 20022004 Hezi served as the FIDF Central Region Chairman of the
Board. More important than his breadth of accomplishments, Hezi leads his life by example, prioritizing his
family, friends and soldiers above all else. Hezi’s proudest achievements are his three sons: Ari, Adam, and
Aaron; his new daughterinlaw Alicia; and his beautiful and patient wife, Arlene.
IDF MAJOR GENERAL
AMOS YADLIN
Director of Military Intelligence
Major General Amos Yadlin was born in Kibbutz Hatzerim in 1951 and
enlisted in the Israel Defense Forces in November 1970. Major General
Yadlin began his army service by volunteering for the Pilots Course,
successfully completing the 68th course as a combat pilot. Soon
afterwards, he took part in the Yom Kippur War as a fighter pilot. In 1973,
Major General Yadlin passed a flight instructor course. Immediately
afterwards, he returned to the “Flying Tiger” squadron. In 1976, he was
reassigned to the “Golden Vulture” squadron (“Vulture” aircraft) and subsequently transferred to the “Negev
Squadron.” Major General Yadlin was named the commander of the instructor branch of “The First Battle Squadron”
(“Kfirim”) at Hatzor Base in 1978 and soon after was appointed commander of the interception branch of “Haemek
Squadron” at RamatDavid Base. Major General Yadlin was a member of the second delegation of pilots enrolled in a
conversion course for the “Hawk” (F16) aircraft in the United States in the early 1980’s and was also named deputy
commander of Squadron B in “The First Jet Squadron” at RamatDavid Base. Shortly after he was appointed deputy
commander of Squadron A in “The Negev Squadron” (“Hawk”) at Ramon Base and then took over as commander of
squadron “The Flying Wing” (Eagle) in RamatDavid Base. In 1987 Yadlin assumed the position of commander of the
squadron “Knights of the Double Tale” at TelNof Base and was then transferred to the Air Force General Staff where
he assumed the role of head of combat training and then serving as head of planning in the Command and
Organization Department. In April 1990, Yadlin was promoted to the rank of Colonel and named head of the
Command and Organization Department. 1994, Major General Yadlin was appointed commander of Nabatim Base
and the head of the Air Force Deployment Administration in the south and soon after was promoted to the rank of
Brigadier General and named Commander of Hatzerim Base. In 1998, Major General Yadlin was appointed head of
Intelligence Squadron, where he served for two years. He was then named Chief of Air Force General Staff and in
2002 was promoted to the rank of General and named commander of Air Force colleges.
In 2004, Major General Yadlin was dispatched to Washington to serve as the IDF Military Attaché and was named
Head of Military Intelligence in January 2006. Major General Yadlin participated in many operations, among them the
attack on the nuclear reactor in Baghdad, and his command and operational experience is much greater.
Major General Yadlin completed a degree in economics and business management with honors and a Masters in
Public Administration from Harvard University in the United States.
Major General Yadlin is married to Karen, and is a father to two girls and a boy.
A LETTER FROM
PRESIDENT
SHIMON PERES
Jerusalem, October 19, 2010
Dear Friends,
I want to congratulate the Friends of the IDF for holding their annual gala dinner with
the well-being of the young men and women who serve in the IDF in mind. They are
the back-bone of Israel’s security and the support and solidarity you demonstrate
significantly contributes to their morale and motivation. Thank you for your valued
efforts on their behalf.
It is with much satisfaction that I note that this year’s dinner is held under the sign of
education and the needs of the individual. Indeed, education has become one of
Israel’s top priorities, in the awareness that it is the key to its future, and that it is
imperative to invest in the young today, in a mission to build tomorrow’s pillars of all
aspects of our society.
Today’s soldiers will be playing a vital role in shaping our tomorrow, and the
education-related programs you are devising will no doubt yield rich dividends for
them as individuals and for the social, economic and defense fabric of Israel at large.
Your steadfast engagement, partnership and unflagging commitment garner a great
deal of appreciation. Looking forward to your continued involvement, I wish you a
pleasant and productive event and much success in your future endeavors.

the Israel Defense Forces annual Gala Dinner.
For nearly 30 years, FIDF has provided the brave young Israeli men and women in

soldiers during their military service, while scholarships and educational programs help
secure their futures as well.
I commend the Friends of the IDF for their dedication and commitment. Thank you for
supporting the Jewish state and those who work every day to defend it.
I wish you an enjoyable evening.

Dear Friends,
It is my pleasure to send greetings to each of you attending the Friends of the Israel
Defense Forces (FIDF) 2010 Annual Gala Dinner.
The soldiers of Israel carry out the utmost vital and sacred mission of all - protecting our
Jewish homeland. They risk their lives day and night not just because it is their duty, but
also because they know that the survival of our people rests on their shoulders.
Your dedication to the soldiers of the IDF makes a tremendous difference to their daily
lives. The remarkable support you provide does more than improve their wellbeing - it
also strengthens their spirit and morale.
The IDF soldiers continue to face challenges year after year. Your incredible devotion
means that they will never stand alone - for that they cherish each and every one of
you for all that you do.
I am deeply appreciative of your commitment to the soldiers of the IDF and to the
security of the State ofIsrael and the Jewish Nation.
Thank you.

October 19, 2010
Dear friends of the IDF in Chicago,
Friends of the IDF in the United States of America - on behalf of the soldiers and
commanders of the IDF, I am excited and proud to address you on this occasion.
Since its inception, the IDF’s mission has been, and will continue to be, to ensure the
existence of the State of Israel as a self-sufficient independent Jewish state, perpetuating
its distinctive historical character and placing morality above all other considerations.
Our enemies have thus far attempted to defeat us by force and have failed. We have
recently found ourselves faced with a broad campaign of delegitimization against the IDF,
against the State of Israel, and against the entire Zionist enterprise. The campaign’s
supporters are unaware of the dangers to which they are ascribing legitimacy: violence,
terrorism, despotism, and tyranny. The Jewish people, hand in hand with a strong,
secure Israel and an advanced deterring IDF, must stand together with a strong, secure
State of Israel, and tell our enemies: You shall not prevail!
Strengthening the connection, partnership, and solidarity between the Jewish people in
the Diaspora and Israel is more crucial now than ever. I salute you for your cooperation
and support, for your deep commitment to Israel’s security, and for the knowledge that
your hearts are with us always.
On behalf of the commanders and soldiers of the IDF, I salute you and continue to
eagerly look forward to the vision of peace shared by you and the entire nation of Israel.
Best wishes for a pleasant evening,
Gabi Ashkenazi, Lt. General

MAYOR
OF BE’ERSHEVA
RUVIK DANILOVICH
Dear Friends,
We in Be’er-Sheva were delighted to hear that Mr. Hezi Levy is being honored by the
Israel Defense Forces in a festive event on October 19th, 2010 in Chicago. As Mayor
of the city, since I can not be there myself, I write this letter to acknowledge and
express our thanks to Mr. Levy.
To me - Be’er-Sheva represents Israel’s past as well as the best of its future, and like
an early resident - our forefather Abraham, Be’er-Sheva is known for peace and
tolerance, and for caring for one’s fellowman.
In my eyes, Hezi Levy represents what is good and true about Be’er-Sheva. Hezi, a
former resident of the city, still maintains his deep ties with Be’er-Sheva. He is son to
one of this city’s deeply-rooted, veteran families with much of his family still living in
the city. It has been my pleasure and privilege to meet him on many occasions when
he has been in Be’er-Sheva.
I believe that volunteerism is a vital and valuable thing to our society, and alongside his
important work for the IDF, Hezi has also personally headed projects to address needs
of Be’er-Sheva populations needing extra support. And all of this on a voluntary basis,
investing countless time and efforts, entirely fueled by his love of and care for his
fellowman.
On behalf of the city and citizens of Be’er-Sheva, I would like to express our pride in
Hezi Levy’s philanthropic accomplishments. When the circumstances allow, the
Be’er-Sheva City Council would also like to bestow on Mr. Hezi Levy Be’er-Sheva’s
municipal award - “The Medallion of the City,”
Our warmest good wishes and congratulations on this well-deserved and joyful occasion.

Friends of the IDF
Dear Friends,
I would like to offer my congratulations on the 23rd Friends of the Israeli Defense
Forces Central Region Annual Dinner. It is inspiring to see the work you do to support
the soldiers who defend Israel - now more than ever.
As a democracy, Israel has a right to defend her borders from Hamas terrorists and
their Iranian sponsors. Without Israel’s quarantine of Hamas terrorist weapons, Gaza
would become a missile farm and those missiles would be used. We should not allow a
heavily armed "Hamasistan" to rise.
I stand with FIDF and behind those young Israelis who make great sacrifices to uphold
the values we both hold near and dear. By coming together, we can support our allies
and work towards a peaceful, safe future for the both of our nations.
Yours truly,
Mark Kirk

October 19, 2010
Dear Friends:
I am honored to join in celebration as the Friends of the Israel Defense Forces, Central
Region, recognizes the brave men and women who have performed admirably in defense
of Israel. As a Jew, someone who loves Israel and a Member of Congress, I stand in
solidarity with the people of Israel.
I am proud to pay tribute to the courageous and indispensable soldiers of the Israel
Defense Forces, whose noble efforts have ensured the security and prosperity of the nation
of Israel. It is through their dedication to their country that the spirit of Israel and its people
have been allowed to thrive. It takes the work of many individuals to ensure this
organization’s success and I want to especially congratulate Mr. Hezi Levy who was
honored with the Yonatan Netanyahu Memorial Award for Outstanding Leadership on
Behalf of Israel’s Soldiers.
The commitment of Israel’s active duty forces to defending their nation and overcoming
adversity and formidable obstacles embodies the values of liberty, community, and
sacrifice. In honoring the actions of these heroic individuals, we must also commemorate
and mourn those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice - the fallen soldiers of the Israel
Defense Forces, who will never be forgotten. The contribution made by all those who serve
is invaluable.
I am pleased to commend the Israel Defense Forces for being one of the first rescue
teams on the site of last year’s devastating earthquake in Haiti. Their tireless, selfless and
compassionate efforts brought hope and crucial supplies to those that lost so much.
I also want to commend the work of the Friends of the Israel Defense Forces. The
support you have provided to Israeli soldiers and their families the past 23 years is a
testament of your commitment to the nation of Israel.
I am pleased to honor the contributions made by Israeli soldiers in the path to a safer
country and acknowledge the tremendous support Friends of the Israel Defense Forces
have provided these soldiers. On behalf of the 9th Congressional District of Illinois, I would
like to extend my best wishes for a memorable evening.

Dear Friends,
Welcome to the 23rd Annual Dinner for the Friends of the Israel Defense Forces. Every
year, this event pays tribute to FIDF supporters and recognizes one individual’s tireless
work with the presentation of the Yonatan Netanyahu Memorial Award.
Friends of the Israel Defense Forces are an invaluable resource that provide for the
wellbeing of the men and women who serve in the lDF, as well as the families of fallen
soldiers. The social, educational, cultural and recreational programs the FIDF offers
have benefited the state of Israel for the past 29 years.
This year’s recipient of the Yonatan Netanyahu Memorial Award goes to a man who
has not only worked with the IDF, to ensure the safety of its’ young soldiers, but has
given his efforts to enhance the social, psychological and physical development or
Israeli youth through the Israel Tennis Center and later for the Elan Handicapped Kids
on Wheelchairs, Hezi Levy’s commitment to help children in need is also demonstrated
by his support for the Make-A-Wish Foundation and Children’s Memorial Hospital.
I would like to commend and thank Mr. Levy for his work in helping those in need and
for protecting the citizens of Israel. Hezi is the true definition of a philanthropist, and it
is my honor to congratulate him on receiving this prestigious recognition.

Dear Hezi:
It is with great pleasure that I extend my sincerest congratulations to you on receiving the
Friends of the Israel Defense Forces Yonatan Netanyahu Memorial Award this year.
Friends of the Israel Defense Forces responds to the immediate needs of the soldiers and
their families by initiating and helping to provide critical social, educational, cultural and
recreational programs and facilities to support the young men and women who defend the
Jewish homeland.
Your exceptional contributions of time and energy are indicative of your continuing
devotion to Friends of the Israel Defense Forces. You have been instrumental both in
getting the community involved and in working closely with the IDF to personally ensure
the care of Israel’s soldiers. Most notably, your strong relationships with IDF Air Force
Pilots, Major Generals, and Heads of Staff have helped the FIDF Central Region grow into
the exemplary chapter it is today. Your work is greatly appreciated by those soldiers and
families aided by your tireless devotion, as well as the Jewish community as a whole.
I would also like to commend you for your philanthropic work on behalf of children with
such distinguished organizations as the Elan Handicapped Kids on Wheel Chairs, Israel
Tennis Center, Make-A-Wish Foundation and Children’s Memorial Hospital. The selflessness
of your actions should be praised and your leadership noted as an example for us all.
Again, congratulations on this wonderful recognition. May you continue to go from

Friends of the Israel Defense Forces
Standing behind our soldiers in times of war and peace, delivering a message of love,
support and appreciation to the brave young men and women who defend Israel.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF), which has been guarding the State of Israel since it declared independence in
1948, derives its strength from the selfless determination and great capabilities of its soldiers. At the age of 18,
these courageous young people join the IDF, promising to take on the responsibility of defending the State of
Israel and protecting the safety of her residents.
In 1981, Friends of the Israel Defense Forces (FIDF) was
created as a 501(c)(3) notforprofit organization with the
mission of providing and supporting social, educational,
cultural, and recreational programs and facilities for the IDF
soldiers and their families. FIDF works tirelessly to provide the
soldiers with support before, during, and after their service in
order to ease the burden they carry on behalf of the Jewish
community worldwide.
Thanks to the dedicated supporters of FIDF,
our soldiers know they never stand alone.
Their Job is to Look After Israel,
Ours is to Look After Them.
IMPACT! Scholarship Program
During their military service, IDF soldiers demonstrate self
discipline, persistence, dedication, and resourcefulness.
They learn how to not only survive, but excel, under the
harshest conditions, and mature into the next generation of
leaders in Israeli society. Unlike the American military, the
IDF does not have a GI Bill of Rights, meaning that many of
the soldiers who come from socioeconomically
disadvantaged backgrounds cannot afford the cost of higher
education once they finish their army service. These soldiers
turn to the IMPACT! Scholarship Program.
The IMPACT! Scholarship Program provides fouryear
academic scholarships to IDF combat soldiers who have
completed their military service and cannot afford the cost of higher education. During their studies, the
students learn the value of giving back to the community by volunteering 130 hours of community service each
year. They also correspond with their sponsors a minimum of twice a year during the Winter and Summer
IMPACT! Mailings.
IMPACT! offers these former combat soldiers a way out of the cycle of poverty
and greatly increases their chances of becoming vital, contributing members
of the future of Israel. By investing in the future of these individuals, the
IMPACT! Scholarship Program sponsors ensure a stronger State of Israel.
The IMPACT! Scholarship Program
began in the Central Region granting
academic scholarships to 202 former
IDF combat soldiers. FIDF now
sponsors over 2,500 successful and
promising students. In 2009, there
were almost 500 IMPACT! graduates
in Israel. To date, over 1800 students
have graduated from the program.
FIDF Central Region sponsors over 800
IMPACT! scholarships.
Recreational Programs
IDF soldiers face demanding conditions on a daily basis, constantly in motion and alert in order
to protect the welfare of the State of Israel. The intense military activity that comes with being
an active duty soldier can lead to severe mental, emotional, and physical stress, affecting the
performance of these brave young men and women.
The SPIRIT program aims to alleviate some of this stress by providing for a week of rest and
recreation provided by FIDF for IDF combat units. Each year, hundreds of soldiers spend a week
at a time in FIDF recreational centers fully equipped with lodging and dining facilities, swimming
pools, fitness rooms, and other amenities. After enjoying a SPIRIT week filled with rest and
relaxation at the FIDF recreational centers, the soldiers return to their demanding routine with
elevated spirits and renewed strength.
In 2009, FIDF supported over 19,000 soldiers through the SPIRIT program.
All combat soldiers also enjoy special FUN DAYS and BRIGADE GATHERINGS sponsored by FIDF
and filled with exciting activities, allowing them to take a well deserved break.
Wellbeing Programs
FIDF works directly with commanders and
soldiers of the IDF to determine where
assistance is needed most. FIDF gives
SPECIAL GRANTS for specific requests from
the IDF such as seasonal gear, sports
equipment, entertainment systems,
electrical appliances, and other
necessities for the soldiers.
In 2009, FIDF provided over 6,550 soldiers
in need with necessities and distributed
over 57,000 gift vouchers.
The ADOPT A BATTALION program
focuses on unity, morale, and the overall
welfare of combat soldiers in a single
battalion by making an FIDF donor
responsible for the wellbeing of that
battalion. The donor becomes a source for the battalion,
providing discretionary funds through FIDF to pay
for various wellbeing and recreational events to boost the morale of their soldiers. Donors
also form a special emotional connection with their adopted battalion; they communicate
through letters and emails with photos describing events that they sponsored, and many
donors visit their soldiers in Israel.
In 2009, FIDF supported 35 battalions through the ADOPT A BATTALION program.
Capital Projects
With its CAPITAL PROJECTS CAMPAIGN, FIDF has
significantly enhanced the quality of life for thousands of
active IDF soldiers by building, refurbishing and
maintaining recreation, sports, cultural, and educational
centers, memorial rooms, synagogues, auditoriums, and
soldiers’ homes throughout Israel.
In the summer of 2010 the Central Region dedicated the
Wilma and Arthur Aeder Canteen and Dining Center at
Reim Base, the largest and most advanced infantry base,
which serves as a multiunit home for combat troops in the
southern region of Israel near the Gaza strip.
This November, the Robert Polak Sports and Recreation
Center will open at the Shraga Base in the north of Israel
for the Golani Brigade. The center will feature air
conditioned basketball and volleyball courts, a cardio
fitness center and a lecture hall.
The Robert Neal Sklare Memorial Synagogue will be
dedicated by the Sklare Family for the soldiers in the
Duvdevan special forces. Duvdevan is considered one of
the world’s most successful counterterror units.
Nevatim Israel Air Force Base Clinic
In 2010, the FIDF Central Region launched its new Capital
Campaign for the Nevatim Air Force Base Clinic in the south of
Israel to be named in honor of the Jeffrey Silverman Family
(Omaha/Chicago) and Morris Silverman and Lori Komisar
(Chicago). Two years ago, Nevatim became the principal base
of the Israel Air Force (IAF), one of the most elite military air
forces in the world. Due to its transformation into the biggest
IAF base in the country, the Nevatim Medical Clinic is in urgent
need of renovation. This $2.8 million project is set for
completion in June 2011.
This summer at the Annual Summer Benefit for Israel’s
Soldiers at Cindy and Israel Levy’s house, hosts Hezi
Levy, Izzy Levy and Judd Malkin, helped the FIDF
Central Region kickoff the fundraising for this new project, raising an astounding $1.6 million. With over half of
the funds raised for this important facility thanks to the success of the Summer Benefit, the Central Region looks
forward to completing the fundraising for Nevatim.
Welfare Programs
FIDF welfare programs assist IDF soldiers who have to support themselves
during their military service either due to grave financial conditions or a lack of
family in Israel.
The DIGNITY program provides these soldiers with financial aid and everyday
necessities to make military service more manageable. There are currently
19,000 soldiers classified as being in need, with one out of five new IDF
soldiers coming from a disadvantaged socioeconomic background. Although
the IDF has increased its welfare budget, soldiers in need require far more
assistance than what the military provides. As such, FIDF plays an important
role in these soldiers’ lives through the DIGNITY program, providing
millions of dollars in special grants, as well as food allowances and
holidaygift vouchers to the soldiers and their families.
Each year, more than 5,000 LONE SOLDIERS choose to leave the
comfort and safety of their homes outside of Israel and enlist in the
IDF. Far from their families and friends, these olim count on FIDF to
provide them with the support they need to successfully serve in
the IDF. By ensuring they have a place to stay on their days off,
people to spend holidays with, and ways to keep in touch with
their lovedones abroad, FIDF helps maintain the morale of these
brave men and women.
In 2009, FIDF sponsored FUN DAYS for 1,671 Lone Soldiers.
The morale of the soldiers needs to stay high not only for their
personal wellbeing, but also for the wellbeing of the State of Israel.
A mentally and emotionally strong IDF is a safer and more efficient
IDF. In order to keep morale high among lone soldiers, who often
spend long periods of time away from their families, FIDF funds
FLIGHTS FOR LONE SOLDIERS, enabling them to reunite with their
families overseas, and giving them the extra boost of support
they need to strive.
In 2009, FIDF sponsored flights for about 100 Lone Soldiers.
Families of Fallen Soldiers-Legacy
The LEGACY program supports the special needs of more than 3,000 bereaved individuals who have suffered the
devastating loss of a lovedone who has fallen during military service. As part of the LEGACY FAMILY program,
FIDF sponsors a variety of summer camp programs for the families of soldiers who were killed in action. Bereaved
families can spend a rest and relaxation week at an FIDF center and enjoy various workshops, social outings,
entertainment by popular Israeli artists, sport activities, and more. Together, families can draw upon each other’s
strength and support, taking comfort in the knowledge that FIDF stands by them in memory of their loved ones.
In 2009, FIDF hosted 150 widows and orphans at R&R centers around Israel.
Most Jewish teenagers celebrate the Jewish comingofage ceremony in which they become a Bnei Mitzvah
surrounded by the support of their family and friends. But for the LEGACY children, who have suffered the loss of
family members killed while serving their country as IDF soldiers this celebration is a bittersweet occasion marked
with the painful reminder of a constant void. FIDF Central Region’s LEGACY BNEI MITZVAH program sends Bnei
Mitzvah aged Israeli children and siblings of fallen IDF soldiers to Midwest Jewish residential overnight camp where
they can enjoy a unique Jewish summer camp experience far away from the daily grief of war and loss. FIDF
sponsors all costs, including flights, camp fees, sundries, accommodations, and activities for the children.
In 2010, FIDF Central Region brought 36 Bar/Bat Mitzvah children with 9 staff to the Central Region
for 2 weeks of overnight camp at Camp Chi in Wisconsin.
Many soldiers who have suffered the loss of a
lovedone serving in the IDF continue to serve
their country while still grieving their personal
loss. Through the LEGACY SOLDIERS program,
FIDF seeks to bring solace to these young men
and women by giving them the opportunity to
travel to the United States while still on active
duty. Stateside, they can have fun, rest and relax,
and enjoy the company of soldiers who are going
through a similar process. During their visits to
major cities in the United States, LEGACY soldiers
connect with many JewishAmericans, helping to
build connections between the U.S. and Israel.
In 2009, FIDF brought 59 LEGACY soldiers to
the United States.
Missions To Israel
The Central Region IMPACT! Mission to Israel offers an exciting
opportunity to experience Israel and what it has to offer through
the eyes of its soldiers.
During the mission, FIDF supporters have special access to IDF
bases where they can see their contributions being put to use in
facilities and services enjoyed by the soldiers. Additionally, they
meet with IDF dignitaries, participate in briefings with Israel’s
leaders, and attend various other IDF events with the soldiers.
Several points along the way, donors have the chance to meet with
their own IMPACT! students, the highlight being a dinner with all of
the students of all of the mission participants on the night of the
IMPACT! Ceremony. During the ceremony, scholarships and awards
are presented to both incoming and graduating IMPACT! students.
The Central Region IMPACT! Mission to Israel is November 412, 2010. Next year the mission
will be November 511, 2011.
The Boot Camp Mission is an unparalleled experience, offering
participants a firsthand glimpse into the life of an IDF soldier. A
former participant described it as a chance to “eat with the soldiers,
sleep with them, sweat with them, laugh with them, share their
dreams, and learn about their nightmares. You become one of them,
even if it is just for a few days. It changes you forever.” The Boot
Camp Mission is seven days long, including four days on an IDF
combat base where participants train with IDF soldiers, followed by
three days touring Israel. Participants eternalize their experience on
the host base by allocating their donations to the base in the way
they’re needed most.
FIDF Young Leadership (YL) is a group of passionate young adults who have made it their priority to help and support
the IDF. The YL Israel Mission takes place annually, gathering young professionals from all over the United States to
support the soldiers. The trip includes visiting soldiers both on their bases and in the field, exploring Israel’s
remarkable sites, and celebrating special events with the soldiers.
Spiritual Needs
Through FIDF’s SPIRITUAL NEEDS program, the
IDF provides for the religious enrichment of its
Jewish soldiers. Working closely with the IDF
Rabbinate, which acts as the exclusive military
Halachic authority, FIDF helps soldiers carry
out Jewish celebrations such as Shabbat
dinners and Jewish festivals by providing the
space and means for soldiers to pray and
observe Jewish customs during their service.
The program provides prayer books, torah
scrolls, tzitzits, tefillin, and tallisim as well as
holiday items such as Chanukah menorahs,
and Sukkahs.
Educational Programs
FIDF encourages and promotes various EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS
designed to guarantee the continuation of the Jewish tradition of passing
knowledge from generation to generation. These various educational
programs assist new immigrants in their assimilation process, provide
enriching opportunities for soldiers with special needs, and develop the
academic skills of soldiers from different military ranks and units. These
programs deepen soldiers’ understanding of Israel’s history and Jewish
heritage, its natural landscape, cultural environment, social makeup, and
language. Through seminars, workshops, discussion groups, and field trips
FIDF educational programs broaden the soldiers’ horizons, encouraging
them to explore their Jewish and Israeli identity, and helping them develop
better personal and interpersonal skills.
The daily activities of IDF soldiers leave them little time to
enjoy the cultural and artistic aspects of Israeli society. In
order to promote the cultural education of soldiers, FIDF
supports a variety of CULTURAL PROGRAMS such as the
SUNDAY CULTURE PROGRAM, which sponsors various
cultural events for soldiers on Sunday mornings. From
plays, dance and musical performances, to films, lectures
and visits to museums the program enables soldiers not
only to enjoy a few hours of entertainment, but also to
reconnect to important educational, social, and
ideological values that exemplify the spirit of Israeli
culture.
Women’s Brigade
Friends of the Israel Defense Forces Women’s Brigade,
established in Chicago in August 2006, was formed in response
to the Second Lebanon War. United in their desire to help
Israel’s Soldiers, women in the Central Region came together
to support Israel’s brave young men and women. Since its
inception, the group has steadily grown, hosting speakers,
planning parlor meetings, and supporting major programs
and projects.
This summer, Friends of the IDF Central Region Women’s
Brigade helped to bring forty Bar/Bat Mitzvah age Israeli
children of fallen IDF soldiers to JCC Camp Chi through the
LEGACY program. For twelve days the campers enjoyed a
unique summer camp experience far away from the daily grief
of war and loss through our LEGACY Program.
Young Leadership
Friends of the Israel Defense Forces Central Region – Young
Leadership (YL) officially began in the summer of 2007 to
provide an outlet for thousands of young professionals in
Chicago and the greater Central Region to express their
support for the soldiers of the Israel Defense Forces. We now
offer more opportunities than ever before for those looking
to get involved in one of the fastestgrowing organizations in
the Chicagoland Jewish community.
YL continually increases its outreach by planning a variety of
engaging, diverse monthly programs. Our events include
stimulating educational receptions with IDF soldiers, inspiring
documentary film nights, entertaining parties at the hottest
restaurants and bars, and much more. With over a thousand
participants, FIDF YL is a major attraction for Chicago’s young
community members to share their support for the brave men
and women of the IDF.
In 2007, FIDF Central Region YL made a commitment to
sponsor four IMPACT! Scholarship Students. Funds raised at YL
events help to support these four scholarships through 2011.
Congratulations to the entire dinner
committee for putting together a
wonderful event to honor Hezi Levy

of the Israel Defense Forces.
