NEWBURYPORT | It
seemed only fitting that the
man who headed up the first
ever Yankee Homecoming in
Newburyport, Mass. should
again take the reins for the
summer’s premier event
during its 50th anniversary.
At the behest of the 2006
Yankee Homecoming Board
of Directors, George Cashman — one of the event’s
founding fathers along with
Jack Frost — would again
chair the event.
Unfortunately, George
took ill during the early fall
of that year and later died
that winter. His death left
behind a grieving community and very large shoes to
fill.
By George’s suggestion,
the Lacroix family would take
over heading up the event.
It was his feeling that the
family stood for the things
that he believed in and what
Yankee Homecoming is all
about: Family, friends and a
commitment to community.
“To use a cliché, he would
have wanted it that way,”
said Jason Lacroix, who now
co-chairs the event with his
parents, Judy and Lucien.
And rightfully so. The
Lacroix family has each
had a turn heading up the
Yankee Homecoming prior
to this year. Between them
they share nearly 75 years of
Yankee Homecoming experience.
Now Lacroix family members, along with a dedicated
list of volunteers, are working hard to ensure that this
year’s Yankee Homecoming
is one worthy of George.
“Yankee Homecoming
really helps bring families
together,” said Jason, “and
to bring back those families
that have been away. Jack
Frost, one of the original
founding fathers of the event
wrote a book on how to run a
Yankee Homecoming. Those
same basic principals apply
today.”

Biden makes Seacoast
campaign stop

KENSINGTON | Seacoast residents had an
opportunity to meet with
presidential candidate, Sen.
Joe Biden (D-DE), at the
home of state representative
hopeful, Jim Webber.
“It’s so nice to be here, in
this blue state,” Biden said
when he arrived at Webber’s
house on Friday, July 6 following a day of New Hamp-
shire stops.
After thanking Webber, who is running against
Republican Frank Palazzo of
Seabrook in a special election
for the position of District 14
state representative on July
31, Biden spoke about the
situation in Iraq.

The North Hampton Public
Library’s “Summer Reading
Road Trip” for children is in
full swing, having already
welcomed beloved puppeteer, Martha Dana and getting prepped for this week’s
“Clayworks” story and clay
sculpting activity.
According to Youth Services Librarian, Lorreen M.
Keating, the “Clayworks”
activity included having a
professional ceramics artist
from Newburyport instruct

clay.
The annual summer

According to the senator, a “relatively weak” central federal system must be
installed in Iraq in order to

factions breathing room,”
Biden said, citing the Balkans
as a successful example.
Regarding his vote to
fund the war in Iraq, Biden
said “I was voting to fund

the next president must have
the “depth and breadth” of
knowledge about national
security to handle the situation effectively and once and
for all so that Americans do
no have to “send kids back”
to Iraq in the future.
There is “no time for onthe-job-training,” Biden said.
“These decisions are life and
death … We can afford no
paralysis.”
Biden urged Seacoast
residents not to give up.
“So folks, we’ve got to
hang on,” he said. “We’ve
got to keep on punching…

Natural farming at Blueberry Bay

No injuries in ultralight crash

HAMPTON | Luck was
on the side of a Massachusetts man who walked, or
swam, away from his ultralight plane after crashing into
the water off Hampton Beach
on Sunday morning.
Authorities said Gerald
Facey, 30, of Erving Mass.,
was flying at approximately
500 feet when the engine of
his plane failed. He turned
the aircraft toward the beach
and made an emergency
landing roughly a quartermile off shore.
Facey, who was in the area
for the 16th annual Yankee
Ultralight Flyers’ Fly-In at
Sanderson Field in Greenland, escaped the crash uninjured.
He was picked up by a
private boat and transferred
to marine patrol personnel at
the scene of the crash. The aircraft suffered minor damage
as a result of the incident.
STRATHAM | As a child,
Ron Laurence picked blackberries in the “deep woods”
behind his home.
Though he pursued a
career in engineering and
worked as the head of a
company, those memories of
berry-picking treks into the
forest from his childhood
remained in the back of his
mind.
“I always loved to
grow [plants],” Laurence
explained.
And in October, 2002, his
love of berries and growing
finally caught up with him
once again when Laurence
purchased Blueberry Bay
Farm with his wife, Lois.
“It was kind of a fulfillment of a life dream,” Laurence said of his decision to
purchase the “turnkey operation” as a retirement project.
Though blueberries are
the main crop at Laurence’s
farm today (the farm boasts
1300 bushes featuring nine
different varieties), customers can also pick a host of
other fruits and vegetables,
herbs and flowers. Garlic
is the second most-picked
crop at the farm, “because

explained.
In order to ensure the blueberry bushes produce both
a quality and plentiful crop,
the Laurence family begins
to prime the bushes early.
In late February, pruning
begins and proceeds through
the first week of May. When

and fertilizing begins. When
the warm weather arrives,
there isn’t time to sit back
and relax.
“All summer long it’s
monitoring bushes for diseases and insects,” Laurence
said.
For the past three seasons,
Laurence hasn’t had a need
to spray any of his bushes.
Even if his crops necessitate
treatment, he won’t settle for
any synthetic chemicals.
“I farm naturally,” Laurence said.
When fall rolls around, the
bushes need to be mulched
in order to control the weeds,
keep the plants’ roots warm
and maintain moisture.
Though Laurence admits
he is busier than he was
before retirement (“It’s physically harder and I work more
hours,” he said), it’s worth
the effort.
“I look forward to every
day, getting up and getting
out,” he said. “The alarm
goes off at 5:30 a.m.”
The Laurence family’s
efforts have paid off. In February 2005, Blueberry Bay
Farm was one of nine farms
in the state recognized as a
New Hampshire Farm of
Distinction.
And it’s not just the state
that notices Laurence’s agricultural excellence. Seacoast
residents have also discovered Blueberry Bay Farm
and come to enjoy all of the
Laurence’s well-kept crops,
especially, the blueberries.
“We have quite a crowd,”
Ron Laurence said.
At 10:30 a.m. on Tuesdays,
youngsters are welcome to
come out, enjoy the weather
and a good read with a free
story hour.
“We like to have young
people here,” Laurence said.

just outside the beach fire
station.
Newman had joined his
fellow professionals from
Local 2664 to take part in a
drive to collect donations for
the International Association
of Fire Fighters (IAFF) Burn
Foundation. As motorists
traveled down both Brown
and Ashworth Avenues, they
were invited to toss into the
boot whatever they felt led
to give, be it dimes or dollars.
The drive was conducted on Sunday, July 8, and
trophy boot drive the town’s
fire department holds every
year, this “volunteer toll
booth” is also for a great
cause.
“All money raised goes
toward treatment and
research for burn victims,”
said Correll, adding that
additional funding is designated to go to the IAFF’s
camp program developed
especially for kids who are
burn survivors.
Donations were collected
on Sunday between 8 a.m.
and 4 p.m., with groups of
three volunteers serving
two-hour shifts (two holding
the boots and one managing
the intake).

When all was said and
done, Newman estimated (as of press time) that
approximately $3500 had
been dropped into the boots
— and that was before the
loose change had been
counted.
It’s certainly something
that any dedicated firefighter can be psyched about.
“It’s awesome,” said
Newman.
Headquartered in Washington, DC, IAFF represents
more than 280,000 full-time
professional fire fighters
and paramedics, with more
than 3,100 affiliates and their
members protecting communities in every state in
the United States, as well as
in Canada.
According to their Web
site, the IAFF Burn Foundation is “dedicated to burn
prevention and education,
burn research and improving
the quality of life for burn
survivors. Created in 1982,
the Burn Foundation is now
the largest non-governmental source for burn research
grants and the sponsor of the
annual IAFF National Children's Burn Camp, held each
fall in Washington, DC.”
This camp “was developed to give young burn
survivors the opportunity
to explore Washington, DC
and share their experiences
with other teens who have
fought back courageously
and successfully from burn

“The guys on the committee are here all day,”
explained Correll. The volunteer staff includes active fire
department personnel, and
“some of our retirees come
back to help,” he adds, listing Rusty Bridle and Bruce
Philbrick among them.
Years ago, the boot drive
was conducted on Ocean
Boulevard near 5th Street,
but according to Correll NH
regulations regarding volunteer fundraising on state
routes made it necessary
to bring the drive “closer
to home” on the roads that
intersect near the station.
Not a problem.
“It’s all town roads,”
said Correll. “We certainly
get enough traffic!” Motorists approaching the collection sites are notified well in
advance by signs and orange
traffic cones, he added, and
as far as safety matters are
concerned, there has “never
been a problem.”
While “weather plays
a huge factor” with the
amount of “boot bucks”
that is raised annually, Correll notes that the public’s
generosity has brought in
“around $3000” annually in
past years, though “I don’t
remember getting a $100
bill” until now.
This year’s boot drive
was held in conjunction with
Local 2664’s recent Chowdah
Challenge, which brought in
approximately $1200 for the
IAFF Burn Foundation.

HAMPTON FALLS | Rescue Anonymous will hold a
Kitty Adoption Day on Saturday, July 21 from 12-4 p.m. at
153 Exeter Road in Hampton
Falls.
The public is invited to
come and see some very
social six-month-old kittens,
as well as colorful and friendly young adults.
Rescue Anonymous is a
non-profit feline rescue and
adoption organization located on the corner of Route 88
and Brown Road, just past
Applecrest Orchards.
To get to the shelter from
Seabrook and points south,
travel north on Route 1 to
Hampton Falls and take a left
onto Route 88.
From Portsmouth and
points north, travel south on
Route 1 and take a right onto
Route 88 in Hampton Falls.

“People are under the
impression that you just buy
cucumbers and squash at
the farmer’s market,” says
Niles.
There is also live entertainment to be had at the
market. The Portsmouth
and Exeter markets often
have music provided by the
likes of Mike & Mike, Dan
Blakeslee or the Sea Smoke
Trio.
“There’s a lot of traditional music,” says Niles, “the
kind of music you’d expect
to hear at a farmer’s market.
There’s bluegrass, but there
is also jazz and contemporary music.”
The market in Portsmouth
is open from the first week
in May to the first week in
November.
“That’s one thing a lot of
people don’t realize is the
markets run well into the
fall,” said Niles. “There’s
tons of vegetables and fresh
cut flowers at that time.”
The other, weekday markets, run for a shorter period
of time, but offer visitors a
more intimate setting where
all their questions can be
answered.
Niles explains that the
association is a benefit to
all involved. Local farmers
are able to share best practices, such as efficient energy
usage. They’re also able to
share their knowledge of the
things they grow with those
who visit the markets.
But the greatest benefit
of all is the knowledge that
what is purchased at one of
the markets is locally grown
or created.
“The average person eats
food that has traveled over
1,500 miles from farm to
plate,” Niles says. “It’s as
staggering cost to the environment to transport food
that far and an unfortunate
loss to the local economy.
Those farms that look so
pretty when you drive by
them are only going to stay
there if you stop and buy.”

HAMPTON | It’s pig
roast time again!
The Hampton Historical
Society will be holding their
sixth annual pig roast fundraiser on Saturday, September 1 from 12-3 p.m. on the
grounds of the Tuck Museum, located on Park Avenue
in Hampton.
Tickets for the event are
$20 for adults and $10 for
students; children age six and
under are admitted free with
an adult.
This is one of the historical society’s biggest fundraisers. The activity starts weeks
beforehand as HHS members
assemble items for the silent
auction, build the cooking pit,
and spruce up the grounds in
preparation for the big event.
Then, on the Friday evening prior to the roast there
is a ceremonial fire-lighting
between 8-9 p.m. The pigs go
in the pit at 11 p.m. and are
monitored by the all-night
cooking crew, led by Chef
Cliff Pratt.
In addition to the succulent pork, there will be homemade baked beans, a variety
of salads, tasty desserts and
beverages — no one leaves
hungry! And besides all this
great food, there will be the
silent auction, numerous raffles, and music to round out
the day.
The Hampton Historical
Society’s annual pig roast
has become one of the big
“end of the summer” community events that brings
everyone together for an
afternoon of fun and fellowship while raising money for
the museum. Plan on being a
part of it.

How much do you really
know about the Hampton
Beach Village District?
One hundred years ago,
Hampton Beach suffered
continuous fires as a result
of afternoon breezes and the
lack of sprinkler systems in
old, open buildings.
“The beach kept on burning down,” explained Seacoast resident, John Kane.
When beach residents
requested and were denied
fire prevention help, Kane
said, they rallied and decided
to spend an extra portion of
their taxes in order to protect
their neighborhood. Hampton Beach’s fire station is still
in operation today on Ashworth Avenue.
In addition to fire protection, the District worked
to modernize the beach and
attract visitors by installing
electricity and waterworks.
Today, the Hampton
Beach Village District delivers hospitality to beach residents and visitors.
Whether you’re relaxing at a bandstand, playing
with kids at the playground,
enjoying some newly planted
flowers, or viewing one of
the 80 annual acts performed
on the Seashell Stage, you
can bet the Hampton Beach
Village District has played a
part in providing the fun.
The District is responsible
for 13 weekly firework shows
every Wednesday during the
summer as well as the Independence Day display and is
pleased to help bring beachgoers June’s Annual Sand
Sculpting Competition, the
Hampton Beach Volleyball
Competition and “Seacoast
Idol.”
In cooperation with the
Hampton Chamber of Commerce and New Hampshire
State Parks, the District is
pleased to contribute and
participate in the Children’s
Festival, held each August.
“They all work very well,”
Kane said of the organizations that contribute to beach
events.
According to Kane, Brian
Warburton, Seacoast regional
supervisor of the State Division of Parks and Recreation,
is always particularly helpful.
“He has really taken
ownership,” Kane said of
Warburton who sometimes
works from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.
to prepare for beach events.
This year, the Hampton
Beach Village District plans
to celebrate its centennial
anniversary with “a special
night of entertainment” on
Sunday, August 19, which
will feature a Broadway act
by the Air Force Band.
Following the performance, Kane said the District will acknowledge those
who have contributed to
the Hampton Beach Village
District over the years and
a “special fireworks shoot”
will be held.
In the second week of September, a centennial celebration ball will be held at the
Ashworth by the Sea. Tickets
for the event will be sold.

projects with threats to the
Republicans if they try to get
these budget busters taken
out of the annual appropriations bill. Congressmen Obey
of Wisconsin and Murtha of
Pennsylvania have almost
committed felonious actions
against some budget-minded
Republicans trying to remove
those pet projects of the Democrats.
And that budget that the
new liberal leaders have proposed is really a whopper. It,
along with the tax increases
planned to pay for it and the
elimination of the Republican tax reductions will run
this country into the largest
tax increase in our history
— even bigger than Clinton’s
monster increase in the midnineties.
It is time to start worrying
about our future. It seems like
if the terrorists don’t wipe us
out first, the liberal Democrat
taxes and spending will.
Even in other areas of
governance, we are seeing
some improvements. The
month of June was good for
America with Supreme Court
and other regulatory declarations, as well as failed legislation in the new Congress
itself. The most important of
which was the death of the
horribly expensive to taxpayers amnesty bill, falsely
called “immigration reform”
that could not meet the 60
percent vote approval test in
the Senate. This alone saved
our country untold billions
of dollars in freebies, payoffs,
and gifts to illegal aliens who
broke our laws sneaking into
the country.

the failure of the House to
resuscitate the repealed,
very wrongly named, Fair-

Sadly, Breakside Road
(formerly known as Drakeside) has once again returned
to its frequent “Road Closed”
status. Several times lately
and ALL weekdays of the
past two weeks, except July
4, the road was closed causing inconveniences to residents.
The developer of that area
— not a Hampton resident,
but dedicated to putting
more and more dwellings
into as little space as possible
— is responsible for the road
breakdowns. “Road Closed”
signs are permanently stashed
in the bushes on this road as
they’re needed so often.
The town should have
ordinances that would levy
fines for every day that
through traffic is prohibited
after a construction job has
been completed. Fines for
late completion of the original contract should also be
imposed.
Contrarily, partial-sanity returned to our nation’s
capitol during the month of
June. Liberals took the brunt
of some federal rulings that
should make life a bit easier
here in these United States.
After all the posturing
the liberals did prior to the
November 2006 congressional elections about cleaning
up and straightening out
what they called the run-

away government, they got
their wish and the people
installed them to wave their
magic wands.
We are now into the seventh month of their brand of
what fails to pass as leadership — and where are all
these gigantic and much
improved changes? The
Republican Congress that we
had prior to the Democrat
version we now have was
said to be a “non-working”
Congress with fewer hours
per week than most all others.
And what do we have
now? A Congress that starts
the week on Tuesdays and
ends on Thursdays for the
most part; almost the exact
copy of the previous legislative body. Improved? Hardly.
This new group (headed
by Nevada’s Senator Harry
Reid and California’s Representative Nancy Pelosi) was
all fired up at ending the
other party’s bad habit of lining bills put before the Senate
and the House with superfluous money projects called
“earmarks” or just plain old
“pork.” They piously proclaimed they’d get rid of all
of those extra funds being
spent for pet projects.
And what do we have
now? A Congress that has
already established a new
record for numbers and
dollars of excessive “pork”
ness Doctrine that was anything but fair; in fact it was a
diminishment of free speech.
It would have silenced a large
number of conservative radio
talk show hosts that the liberals felt outnumbered their
types. They disregarded that
of the four major networks
on television plus, MSNBC
and CNN only one was considered conservative. Five
against one is called liberal
fairness. A whopping majority of large newspapers are
also ultra-liberal in news
presentation. That’s OK with
them, but radio has to be
silenced.
Big labor and their liberal lackeys took a major hit
from the Senate itself when
legislation was defeated to
remove the secret ballot from
union organizing and replace
it with a “card check” or a
blank check for the unions
with no fear of losing. Talk
about a fairness doctrine, this
was a total UN-fairness practice being sought.
The US Supreme Court
ruled against racial preferences in public schools to the
displeasure of the harridanish reverends Jesse Jackson
and Al Sharpton.
A ruling by the FTC’s
Internet Access Task Force
urged policy makers not to
interfere with regulation of
the Internet and stay away
from federal “net neutrality.”
This again is good news for
taxpayers as the liberal Congressmen wanted to control
it but are now unable.

House
(A) RAISE THE LIABILITY CAP FOR GOVERNMENT
| HB882 would nearly double the cap on tort liability to
$925,000 for personal injury and to $3.75 million for all tort
claims to state and local government. Supporters said that
the cap hadn’t changed in 23 years, and this was a lower
increase than inflation. Opponents thought that a clause
slipped in by the Senate made the change retroactive, so
that municipalities would have to pay under the higher cap
even though their insurance policies weren’t changed to
reflect that. The House PASSED the bill 189-131. A YES vote
FAVORED raising the liability cap.
(B,C) SPEND NOW RATHER THAN LATER | This is
the first version of the $10.4 billion biennium budget, or
about $2.4 billion in state spending, a 16 percent increase in
spending over the previous budget. Supporters said that it
is larger because it is more transparent (it doesn’t hide items
that will be supplemented anyway) and because it makes
crucial investments in social infrastructure (like training
teachers and insuring children) that would prevent large
social and economic costs in the future. Opponents said
that families didn’t get such a big raise, inflation is not that
high, so why shouldn’t the state live within its means. The
House then PASSED (B) the language of the budget, 210148. A YES vote FAVORED the budget. The amendment (C)
lowers the revenue estimates for the state budget. Budget
supporters said that the revenue estimates are realistic.
Budget opponents said that they are inflated and the
budget should be lowered to reflect that. The amendment
FAILED 152-213. A YES vote OPPOSED the budget revenue
estimates. The House and Senate passed the final version of
the budget on June 27, which the Governor was expected to
sign into law.
(D) KINDERGARTEN NEEDED FOR ADEQUATE
EDUCATION | HB927 defines an adequate education as
meeting NH school approval standards and curriculum
frameworks in nine specific content areas, including
Kindergarten. Supporters said requiring public Kindergarten
is crucial for all students to have an equal chance to learn.
By passing this, the state would finally start complying with
the state Supreme Court: Define an adequate education first
and then come up with the money to pay for it. Opponents
said that it is impossible to define adequacy without
knowing the cost and how the money should be raised,
and no bill should be passed without some sort of estimate.
The cost of Kindergarten alone, for instance, would be
enormous, either to the state, or for towns that don’t have it.
The House PASSED the language of the bill 223-134. A YES
vote FAVORED requiring public Kindergarten and defining
educational adequacy independent of the cost. The House
and Senate passed the final version of adequacy on June 27.
The Governor was expected to sign the bill.

Fire investigation continues

| Investigations into the
cause of a fire that damaged
the Funarama arcade at the
Hampton Beach Casino
were still ongoing a week
after the blaze occurred.
The two alarm fire
started just before 8 p.m.
on Wednesday, July 4. An
evacuation was already
underway when firefighters
arrived. No injuries were
reported.
While the Funarama
portion of the building sustained the most damage,
other parts of the structure, including the Casino
Ballroom, sustained smoke
damage. Repairs were made
so that scheduled performances could proceed without any cancellation.
Though there had been
reports of a possible suspect
spraying what appeared to
be lighter fluid next to the
Funarama entrance prior to
the fire, the Fire Prevention
Bureau had not yet released
an official report as of press
time.
Although beach goers
missed out on an evening
of Fourth of July fireworks
as a result of inclement
weather, Hampton Beach
Village District Chairman,
Maureen Buckley said the
cancellation, in retrospect,
turned out for the best as
a number of organizations
were able to coordinate and
handle the situation efficiently.
Buckley said she was
thankful to the Chamber of
Commerce and District and
commended the firefighters
for their work.

speeches you both pledged
your support to the deploying soldiers and their families; if there was anything
that you could do to assist
them, to please contact your
offices.
Well, I am a military
wife, my husband is currently deployed, and I have
something that you can do:
Please stop telling the families you support the soldiers,
when to others you say the
war can’t be won and vote
against funding.
By your actions, your
promises are hollow, mean-
ingless words; your presence
at these ceremonies merely
a political game of appearances. You need to support
the soldiers AND their mission. Families will be comforted knowing that you,
too, believe this war CAN
BE and IS being won by our
brave men and women.
My husband wrote me
recently… "at Camp Victory
in Iraq, 600+ soldiers extended their enlistment in the
Army — 600 soldiers from
this one operating base in
Iraq! This is a testament to
the passion soldiers have for
the duties they perform in
support of Operation Iraqi
Freedom and supporting the
War on Terrorism.
“With regard to the war
effort, we are making much
progress here in Iraq. We
are bringing safety and security to new neighborhoods
everyday. We have much to
complete and there are still

I have learned during this
deployment is the people of

that we want in America:

streets, good jobs and they

Operation America Rising: Rally for the troops
HAMPTON | It wasn’t a
huge crowd, but it was still
a strong patriotic group that
gathered at Centennial Park
at North Beach to show their
support for America’s troops
serving their country around
the world.
An estimated 100 or so
people of all ages — many
wearing red, white and blue
— took part in a two-hour
Support the Troops rally on
the afternoon of Saturday,
July 7.
The event was held in
conjunction with “Operation
America Rising 07-07-07”
along with similar rallies
conducted the same day in
more than 30 other states
across the nation.
“I’m glad to be here,”
said Hampton resident Liz
Webb. “I believe in this.”
Supporting US troops
“is something every citizen
should do,” added Webb’s
husband, Skip.
Organized locally by
Hamptons American Legion
Post #35, the rally featured
guest speakers, refreshments, and special music
provided by a band headed
by Post #35 Commander
Ralph Fatello — casually
outfitted in his humorouslytagged “Who’s Your Baghdaddy?” T-shirt.
Fatello had originally
been approached about four
months ago by Brentwood
resident Jennifer Pierce,
whose brother John Hamilton (a US Army soldier)
recently returned to Iraq
after a enjoying a brief visit
home on the Seacoast.
Pierce had heard about
the multi-state event and was
interested in seeing something happen locally. Her
aunt, Vicki Johns of Hampton, told her that Fatello is
“’really active in the community,’” said Pierce. “He
jumped right in.”
They kept in touch at various times after their initial
meeting, and when Fatello
contacted her a couple of
weeks ago “to see if I still
wanted to make a ‘go’ of
it,” explained Pierce, “I said
‘most definitely.’”
Fatello lined up a trio of
guest speakers, including
Ed Johnson (USMC) of the
Pease Greeters; Col. Paul
Lessard (USMC) and local
businessman Joe Kutt (USN).
He also commissioned 11year-old Elaine Weatherby,
granddaughter of a Post #35
member, to sing the National
Anthem.
“We’re sending a message
to [our troops] to let them
know that we do in fact support them,” said Fatello.
Noting that the rally
fell on what “many people
consider a lucky day (7-707) to get married,” Rep.
Nancy Stiles said “I hope it’s
a lucky day for our troops
in Iraq [and] that they can
successfully complete their
mission.”
“As a retired military Veteran, it’s the least I can do
to come down here to the
beach with the family and
encourage the guys from
New Hampshire that we’re
behind them all the way,”
said Hampton Fire Chief
Hank Lipe. “We hope they
come home safely.”
All three guest speakers reiterated their dedication to America’s military
and encouraged the public
to continue showing their
support. The speakers’ comments and stories about
their own personal military
connections as well as their
commitment to their country, were met with appreciative applause.
“We are the guiding light;
we are the beam of freedom,”
said Kutt as he concluded an
impassioned speech.
“America” is the best
country in the world,” said
Lessard, who told the story
of a military hero who, after
losing a leg in battle, said his
only regret about the injury
was that he couldn’t square
dance anymore.
Regarding the Pease
Greeters, Johnson noted that
for military personnel coming and going, “We can be
the rest of America, wishing
them well, showing them
respect. We’re Americans
greeting Americans.”
Joining in the applause
for each speaker was Hampton resident Betty Callanan.
“This [is] a great tribute
to the troops,” she said, noting that holding the rally on

“It’s a great day and a
great opportunity, as this
Global War on Terror reigns,
that we honor our troops,
both the living and the
fallen,” commented Post
#35 member Mark Weatherby. He hastened to add
that whatever one’s political
affiliation may be, “we need
to support our troops. We
just need to keep that support going, no matter what
way the flag blows.”
Also among those in
attendance was Barbara
Walsh, visiting her sister’s
Hampton Beach home from
Sharon,
Massachusetts.
Walsh’s 19-year-old grandson, USMC Lance Corporal Shayne M. Cabino (2nd
Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment), gave his life in service
to his country on October 6,
2005 when he and three other
US Marines were killed after
a roadside bomb exploded
near Karmah, Iraq.
“Once they made that
commitment, we owe them
every ounce of support we
can give them,” said Walsh,
who called the beach rally
“very nice” but wished that
more people had been able
to attend.
“You have to support
anything that’s supporting the troops,” she added,
observing that even sunbathers on the beach had
stood up when the National
Anthem was sung to open
the rally.
As the event continued,
Fatello fired up his guitar
with a couple of other band
members and blazed through
a whole set of songs, peppering the performance with
further entreaties for the
public to show support for
America’s men and women
in uniform.
“It’s a great day,” said
Connie Holman, whose husband John, Post #35’s chaplain, served in the US Army.
“We can’t do enough to support our troops.”

It is a phrase that denotes
permanency, a long lasting
tribute in the form of memorials and grave markers.
Now, a local business is
taking that idea of long-lasting tribute to a whole new
level.
Etchex, of Portsmouth,
is offering its customers a
unique approach to maintaining keepsakes forever.
The process involves laser
etching on stone and a multitude of other materials.
The idea behind the
business was founded by
serendipitous occasion. Cofounder Brian Haberstroh,
while at a trade show in
Orlando, Florida, witnessed
the process of images,
photos and designs laser
engraved on granite, marble, wood and a variety of

expanded facility.
Owners Carol and
Lenny Paul hope customers will enjoy the new room
and patio available at their
“neighborhood café,” which
has become a new favorite
on Hampton Beach thanks to
neighborly support.
Carol said many people,
including Linda and John
Gebhart of the Hampton
Beach Village District Beautification Committee, donated
flowers for the patio which
opened in late May.
Hampton Beach hotel
owners have also been helpful, spreading the word
about the café since its April
1 grand opening.
And building owner,
Owen Carter has pitched
in with his support as well,
working with the Pauls to
coordinate the café’s brightly
painted exterior with surrounding buildings.
While they indulge in a
cup of local, freshly ground
java, a homemade smoothie or soda with a Panini
sandwich, or one of Carol’s
famous homemade blueberry scones or lemon squares,
customers can now enjoy
the work of local artists, displayed in the shop’s new
seating area.
“I welcome other artists
that want to come in,” Carol
said.
If the café’s seating
expansions garner a positive
response, it’s possible that
menu expansions could follow suit in the fall.
So far, prospects look
good for Carol and Lenny
— patron response to the
café has been outstanding.
According to Carol and
Alicia Dane, who also works
at the café, one summer resident came into the shop for
the first time, got on her
hands and knees and began
to kiss the floor.
“[The patron told me],
‘This is such a cute place; it’s
such a great addition to the
beach,’” Dane said.
Customer Tracie Williams, who read about the
café in an issue of the Atlantic News, said the ride up to
Hampton Beach from Rowley is well worth the trip.
“I mean, hello, they’re
just so nice and friendly…
they’re just so, so sweet,”
Williams said. “I can just sit
here for hours.”
Carol said she knows
“what customers’ needs
are before they come in the
door.” She also maintains a
“punch-card” system — for
every nine coffees a customer purchases, they get one
free.
Carol and Alicia said
the system is “hassle-free;”
they keep the punch-cards
on a Rolodex at the store
so patrons don’t have to
remember to bring them.
Both women said they enjoy
flipping through the Rolodex so they have the opportunity to get to know more
customers.
Carol, Lenny, their son,
Todd, and Alicia welcome

and pop shop.” They’ve had
a ball so far and look forward to the future.
“We stumbled upon this
and so far it’s been awesome,” Carol said.

Sign up for art critique workshop

this black bear wandered into the backyard of a residence
in Greenland.

time for bears, according to
Timmins.
"The beechnuts and
acorns that fell last fall have
turned into woody sprouts
that are now unattractive to
bears," he said. "Although
the wild strawberries have
begun to ripen in recent
days, the bulk of the important summer fruits that provide feed for bears will not
become available until a few
weeks from now."
This period of low food
abundance, noted Timmins,
causes bears to search out
and utilize high quality and
readily available foods provided by humans, and is
the main reason why the
majority of bear complaints
in New Hampshire occur
during June and July.
Be bear-friendly
Avoiding unwanted contact with bears is as easy as taking a
few simple precautions:
• Stop all bird feeding by April 1 or as soon as snow melts.
• Clean up any spilled birdseed and dispose of it in the trash.
• Secure all garbage in airtight containers inside a garage or adequate storage area, and put garbage out on the morning
of pickup, not the night before.
• Avoid putting meat or other food scraps in your
compost pile.
• Don't leave pet food dishes outside overnight.
• Clean and store outdoor grills after each use.
• Do not leave food, grease or garbage unsecured
around campsites.
• Store food and coolers in a closed vehicle or secured
area while camping.
• Finally, never intentionally feed bears!
These steps will help to ensure that your backyard or campsite
does not become attractive to bears and other wildlife, which is
important because it prevents property damage by bears and it
keeps bears from becoming "nuisance" animals.
SEACOAST | House of Frames, located at 33 Main
Street (Route 111-A) in Danville will present a second art
critique workshop as part of its free, educational series on
Wednesday, July 25, from 7-9 p.m. Participants are invited to
bring their artwork or photographs to be critiqued in a nonjudgmental and friendly discussion of the pros and cons of
the composition, balance, perspective and color temperatures
in the piece. It’s a unique opportunity to discover how to
analyze and plan pictures to make the best presentations.
In these small group sessions, there will be additional
suggestions for matting and framing for a dramatic impact
by using texture and color to show the artwork to its best
advantage. Before and after examples will be shown. The
free mini-workshops are being presented by Tony Pizzurro
and Elaine Clark, co-owners of the House of Frames; and
local artist, Ann Perkins, who teaches and works in a variety
of media. An artist for more than 20 years, Perkins exhibits
at art fairs and has studied with many different artists. She’s
been a member of the Seacoast Artists Association, Greater
Haverhill Art Association, Nashua Area Art Association and
Sharon Art Center. Space is limited so advanced sign-up for

CVHS plans pet microchip clinic
PORTSMOUTH | The Cocheco Valley Humane Society
will hold a microchip clinic for dogs and cats at PETCO in
Portsmouth on Saturday, July 21 from 12-2 p.m. Mark &
Danielle of WOKQ’s Morning Waking Crew will be on hand
to meet pet owners and sign autographs. Microchipping
is the latest technology in pet identification and gives
owners the peace of mind that if their pet becomes lost it
can be easily identified through a nationwide registry. A
microchip, about the size of a grain of rice, is placed under
the skin of the pet’s neck. With the use of a special scanner,
any animal shelter or veterinarian can quickly identify the
pet and its owner. Appointments are not needed for the
clinic and the microchips will be administered on a firstcome, first-served basis. Pet owners should bring the name
and phone number of an alternate emergency contact
person. Dogs must be on leash and cats in carriers. Cash
and checks will be accepted. Microchipping normally costs
between $50-$100 per pet. At this clinic, or at anytime at
CVHS, owners can microchip their pet for the low cost of
$30 per pet, which includes the cost of registration.

of year things can get pretty
wild here on the Seacoast.
No, we’re not referring
to your backyard barbecues
or your pool parties.
We’re talking really wild,
like bears or other wildlife
found in our very own
backyards. Yes, they may
look cute and cuddly, but
it is important to remember
these are wild animals.
In order to keep things
safe at the homestead or the
campsite, New Hampshire
Fish and Game has a few
helpful suggestions.
"New Hampshire's black
bears know that some
places provide easy meals
in the form of bird feeders, garbage containers and
unsecured coolers," said
Andrew Timmins, NH Fish
and Game's Bear Project
Leader. "Homeowners and
campers can prevent bear
visits by taking simple steps
like bringing in bird feeders and pet bowls, putting
barbecue grills in the garage
… or keeping all food and
coolers in a vehicle with the
windows rolled up."
When selecting a campsite, Timmins suggests that
campers consider choosing
a campground that uses
bear-proof Dumpsters.
"Many campgrounds in
New Hampshire have done
a great job reducing attractants around their facilities,
which substantially reduces
the chance of a conflict with
bears," he said.
Timmins asks all New
Hampshire residents and
visitors to do their part to
prevent such man vs. animal conflicts.
"Preventative actions will
avoid the chances of bears
causing property damage
and are essential to maintaining the state's strong
bear population," Timmins
says. "There is some truth to
the adage that 'a fed bear is
a dead bear.' Once they get
used to relying on human
food sources in your backyard, some 'nuisance' bears
may need to be destroyed.
If you are intentionally
feeding bears, you may be
contributing to their death.
Don't do it."
In addition to being a
bad idea, feeding bears can
get one in some legal hot
water. Because of growing
concern for creating a public
nuisance and public safety,
state law prohibits the feeding of black bears, intention-

A total of $32,500 was
awarded this year through
LEAP, which is an educational initiative comprised
of a scholarship fund, college internships, a school
outreach program for grades
K-8, and a savings program
called College CD.

their educational goals,"

have provided 94 scholar-
ships and 38 summer internships to New Hampshire
high school seniors."
Through LEAP, TD
Banknorth established a 10year $225,000 scholarship
fund, which is administered by the NH Charitable
Foundation. In honor of the
program's 10th anniversary,
TD Banknorth contributed
an additional $10,000 to the
fund, making it possible
for the bank to award four
additional scholarships.
Each of the 13 scholarship recipients will also be
offered a three-month paid
internship position with the
bank during the summer
after their first year of postsecondary education.
Scholarships are awarded based on financial need,
as well as a merit evaluation that includes a review
of academic achievement,
involvement in school activities, and community volun-

Church hosts ham and bean supper

“The Balancing Act,”

for 2007 for their board games “Foreign Language Learning
Game Spanish 1” and “Foreign Language Learning Game

accepted for New Covenant Sporting Club’s fourth annual
Fish Fry and Wild Game BBQ. This fun-filled event will take

Hospitals form support group
EXETER | A support group is being formed for families
who have experienced the loss of a baby through miscarriage,
ectopic pregnancy, stillbirth or newborn death. The Seacoast
Pregnancy and Infant Loss Support Group is collaborative
effort of Exeter Hospital, Frisbie Memorial Hospital and
Wentworth-Douglass Hospital. Meetings are held every
other week for a 12-week period. The next session will be

Turning receipts into cash
GREENLAND | New Generation Shelter in Greenland
is encouraging shoppers to save their grocery receipts
from Shaw’s supermarkets. Thanks to the Shaw’s Receipt
Rewards program, the non-profit shelter is receiving a
percentage of total Shaw’s receipts submitted by Seacoast
area shoppers. Receipts may be dropped off at the New
Generation Shelter, or Next Generation Infant and Toddler
Center, both located at 568 Portsmouth Avenue in Greenland;
or at either of the Second Generation Thrift Shoppes, located
at Tide Mill Road in Greenland, or 25 Old Dover Road
in Rochester. All proceeds help support New Generation
Shelter operating costs. New Generation, Inc. is a shelter
for homeless pregnant women and mothers with young

The list of events is nearly

live musical acts, one each
evening of Homecoming.
Each night at Waterfront
Park bands such as Beatlejuice, Entrain and the James
Montgomery Band. And like
many of the Yankee Homecoming attractions it’s free.

parade, a bed race, history
tours of Newburyport, art
shows, a canoe tilt, tai chi
in the mornings at the park,
a scavenger hunt, the ChIPs
(Child Identification Program), Juju Bee the Clown
and that’s just the tip of the

On Super Saturday, the
final Saturday of the event
so named because it is jam
packed with things to do, is
the fireworks show.
“I’ve been told it’s one
of the best in the area,” said
Jason. “I like to believe that,
but I’m biased. But, when
people tell you it’s nice to
hear.”
And while Yankee Homecoming is going on, several non-profit groups from
around the area are holding
their own major fundraising
events of the year.

one of the most popular
misconceptions about Yankee Homecoming is that the
event is put on by the city or
the Chamber of Commerce.
“We get support from the
city, but they don’t fund us,”
he said. “It’s not put on by
the city or the Chamber of
Commerce. We work with
them, but it is its own separate entity.”
That entity, filled with
helpful and willing volunteers, is responsible for
fundraising, planning and
executing the event. Jason
said the whole of Yankee
Homecoming is dependent
on people.
“For nine days, city-wide
there is something going on
everywhere in the city, not
just the downtown area,” he
said. “There are hundreds
of events with thousands
of volunteers. The magic
formula is people. We need
them volunteering, donating
and showing up and participating. Without any of those
three things the event is a
failure.”

‘Celebrate the Light’
on National Lighthouse Day

Day shines the spotlight
on historic beacons like the
Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse, which is also known
as Fort Point Light, New
Castle Light, and Fort Constitution Light.
In fact, celebratory events
will be taking place earlier in
the day at the lighthouse site
itself, located off Route 1B in
New Castle, adjacent to Fort
Constitution and the Coast
Guard station at Portsmouth
Harbor.
To begin with, the Friends
of Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse will hold an open
house from 10 a.m. to 2
p.m. During that time, visitors will be able climb the
44 stairs to the watch room
and the seven-rung ladder to
the lantern room of the 1878
tower.
There they will be able
to enjoy a magnificent view
of Portsmouth Harbor as
well as a close-up look at the
active, fourth order Fresnel
lens.
Flat shoes are strongly
recommended; visitors are
encouraged to leave their flip-flops
and sandals at home. Children under 42 inches tall are
not permitted to climb to the
top, and adults are not permitted to carry children up
the stairs.
There is a suggested
donation of $2 for adults and
$1 for children. Reservations
are not necessary; tours are
conducted on
a first-come,
first-served
basis
and
the public is
encouraged
to experience
the view.
There will
be a special
added attraction at the open house that
day. The a cappella group
“Blue of a Kind,” based on
Boston’s North Shore, will be
performing sea shanties and
other music near the lighthouse.
A men's a cappella ensemble, Blue of a Kind consists
of musicians that share a
passion for performing and
blending their voices as one,
enriching audiences and
singers alike. In addition to
sea shanties, the group presents lively arrangements of
songs exploring the genres of
jazz, blues, gospel, folk, spirituals and popular music.
Celebrate National Lighthouse Day with the Friends
of Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse. Plan to make a day of
it and attend both the open
house and concert — they're
only 10 minutes apart. For

PORTSMOUTH | It’s
time to celebrate the Light.
The annual observance of
National Lighthouse Day is
just a few weeks away, and
one way to celebrate it is to
attend a benefit concert hosted by the Friends of Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse.
The concert, featuring
the New England Bluegrass
Band and Shann achie, will
take place on Saturday,
August 11 at 3 p.m. at the
South Church, located at 292
State Street in Portsmouth.
Tickets are now on sale
and may be purchased at
www.portsmouthharborlighthouse.org at $18 for
adults and $10 for children
ages 12-18. Children under
12 are admitted to the concert free of charge.
All proceeds from the concert will benefit the American
Lighthouse Foundation in the
nonprofit organization’s mission to preserve the nation’s
lighthouses and their history.
Recognized as one of
the most talented bluegrass
groups performing in the
region today, the New England Bluegrass Band features
members who have reached
the top levels of performance. This list includes
Berklee School of Performing
Arts alumni, regional and
national picking champions,
national and worldwide
touring artists, all centered
around a powerful and traditional vocal array.
Offering great fun with
the sound of Irish music,
Shannachie (a Gaelic word
that means storytelling, in
a manner of speaking) is
famous for Irish pub singing, stories and shenanigans.
Pat Heffernan and Patrick
Keane are the men behind
the music, and the pair will
provide plenty of opportunity for hand-clapping,
foot-stomping and merrymaking.

GREENLAND | Greenland’s Community Congregational Church will hold a
Community Pancake Breakfast on Saturday,
July 21 from 8-10 a.m. at the Parish House,
located at 42 Post Road.
The breakfast menu will include buttermilk and blueberry pancakes, bacon, sausage, orange juice and coffee. The cost is $4
for adults, $3 for children ages 4-12, and free
for children under age 4.
This event kicks off a day of festivities in
Greenland leading up to the Jason Hussey
Memorial Road Race at 6 p.m. For more

Church presents
fine arts concert series
RYE | Rye Congregational Church,
located at 580 Washington Road in Rye
presents the Abendmusik Fine Arts Series,
taking place during the months of July and
August.
Four evening concerts will be performed
in the main sanctuary of the church, each
beginning at 8 p.m.
On Saturday, July 14 organist David
Wold will perform on the authentic 24-rank
pipe organ within the church. The concert
will feature selections by Bach as well as
honor Buxtehude's 300th anniversary, and
include three great Toccatas in D Minor,
F Major, and D Minor. An accomplished
organist, Wold has performed throughout
New England, and in cathedrals in Montreal, Quebec and Paris, France.
The following week, on Saturday, July
21, Alamire Consort will perform an aural
feast of chanson and early music featuring many ancient instruments. Alamire
Consort has evolved from Capella Alamire
which was formed in 1984 for the purpose
of exploring the repertoire of the Renaissance.
The Consort has continued to maintain Capella's mission with an instrumental
focus, varied with chanson accompanied
by viols, harp, sackbut and any manner of
woodwinds.
The concert will center on repertoire
by Franco-Flemish composers including
Josquin DesPrez, Johannes Ockeghem,
Antoine Busnoys, Pierre de la Rue, Heinrich Isaac and Nicholas Gombert.
Coming up will be “Siren’s Song” featuring Angelynne Hinson, soprano, and
Melinda McMahon, mezzo-soprano on
August 4; and a performance by virtuoso
pianist Paul Dykstra on August 11.
Tickets at the door are $10 for adults and
$8 for Seniors and students; children under
the age of 12 are admitted free. Advance
tickets receive 20 percent off and may be
purchased through the church. For more

OGUNQUIT | The Ogunquit Playhouse,
located on Route 1, has announced that Maxwell Caulfield and James Beaman will bring
their talent and comic timing to its production
of “La Cage aux Folles.”
The production, which runs July 17
through August 4, will feature Caulfield in
the role of Georges, with Beaman playing the
role of Albin.
The show will also feature Tony Award
nominee, Jane Summerhays, and former Miss
America, Susan Powell.
“This wonderful hand-picked cast, featuring some of the best talent from Broadway
and television, will bring to life one of the
most beloved stories in all of Broadway musical theatre,” notes Brad Kenney, executive
artistic director for the Playhouse.
Caulfield arrives in Ogunquit direct from
his West End stage debut as Billy Flynn in
the long-running London production of “Chicago.” Caulfield, who won a 1980 Theatre
World Award for “Class Enemy” has also
starred in Broadway productions as well as
off-Broadway shows, as well as at the New
York Shakespeare Festival. His film credits
include "Grease 2," "The Boys Next Door" and
"The Real Blonde.” He is probably best known
for — and gained wide fame from — his roles
on TV's "Dynasty" and "The Colbys."
Joining Caulfield is award winning cabaret artiste, James Beaman, whose spectacular
impersonation of Marlene Dietrich has been
seen by audiences around the US, in Europe
and on national and international television.
He is also the creator of the Leslie Bricusse
revue, “Crazy World” which won the Manhattan Association of Cabarets and Clubs MAC
Award for Revue of the Year in 2002.
Included in this star studded cast is Jane
Summerhays, who was nominated for a Tony
Award for the role of Lady Jacqueline in “Me
and My Girl” and also starred in the Broadway
productions of “Taking Steps” and “Lend Me
a Tenor.” Ms. Summerhays’ other Broadway
credits include “The Wild Party,” “Cabaret,”
“Sugar Babies” and “A Chorus Line.”
Rounding out the cast is former Miss
America 1981, Susan Powell, who has served
as the host of “Home Matters” on the Discovery Channel. Powell also played Cora on the
CBS soap, “Guiding Light,” made her operatic
debut as Adele in “Die Fledermaus” with the
Seattle Opera and debuted at the New York
City Opera as Johanna in Harold Prince's production of “Sweeney Todd.”
Performances of “LaCage aux Folles” are
Tuesday through Friday evenings at 8 p.m.,
Saturday evenings at 8:30 p.m., weekday matinees on Wednesday and Thursday at 2:30
p.m. and Sunday matinees at 3:30 p.m. Tickets

NEW CASTLE | The Friends of Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse in New Castle
will hold an open house on Saturday, July 14
from 1-5 p.m.
During that time, visitors will be able
climb the 44 stairs to the watch room and the
seven-rung ladder to the lantern room of the
1878 tower. There they will be able to enjoy
a magnificent view of Portsmouth Harbor as
well as a close-up look at the active, fourth
order Fresnel lens.
Flat shoes (not sandals or flip-flops) are
strongly recommended. Children under 42
inches tall are not permitted to climb to the
top, and adults are not permitted to carry
children up the stairs.
There is a suggested donation of $2 for
adults and $1 for children. Reservations are
not necessary; tours are conducted on a firstcome, first-served basis and volunteers will
be on-site to tell visitors about the history of
the light station.
The lighthouse is located off Route 1B in
New Castle, adjacent to Fort Constitution
and the Coast Guard station at Portsmouth

The walls of Gallery 280 are alive with
creatures great and small as depicted by
a variety of Seacoast artists whose work is
currently on exhibit, including Donna Harkins’
“Lily of the Steps” (pictured). Selections
include drawings, paintings, fabric art,
photography, and Chinese brushwork with
subjects ranging from beloved pets and
wild animals to imaginative symbols and
human-like (anthropomorphic) illustrations.
Located at the Children’s Museum of
Portsmouth on Marcy Street, Gallery 280
is open Monday through Saturday from 10
a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday from 1-5 p.m.
There is no charge to view the Gallery 280
exhibit; regular admission rates apply for
families wishing to explore the rest of the

NEWBURYPORT | The Powow River
Poets will hold a poetry reading on Wednesday, July 18 at 7:30 p.m. at the Newburyport
Art Association Gallery, located at 65 Water
Street.
The reading, which is free and open to the
public, features a diverse and range of poetry
from widely-published Featured Poets, Richard Moore and Claudia Gary-Annis.
Moore has published a novel, a book of
literary criticism, and 12 books of poetry. He
has been nominated for the Pulitzer Prize;
was a T.S. Eliot Prize finalist; is a graduate
of Yale; was a pilot in the Air Force; and is
listed in Who’s Who in America. His fiction, essays, and more than 700 poems have
been published in a great variety of magazines, including the “New Yorker,” “Atlantic
Monthly,” “Harper's,” “Poetry,” “American
Poetry Review” and “The Nation.”
Gary-Annis is a poet, composer, editor,
and freelance writer. Her full-length poetry
collection “Humor Me” was published in
2006 by David Robert Books. She also has
two chapbooks: “Ripples in the Fabric” and
“Schadenfreud(e) and Other Occupational
Hazards.” Her poems have appeared in
“Sparrow,” the “Formalist,” “Light Quarterly” and other journals and anthologies.
The gallery where the poetry reading will
be conducted is handicapped-accessible, and

SAM concert
NORTH HAMPTON | The Seacoast Academy of Music (SAM) presents their Summer
Evening Music at Centennial Hall Series, running now through August 7.
Described as “a great way to spend a summer evening in the New Hampshire Seacoast,”
the performances will be held on Tuesday
evenings at 7 p.m. at Centennial Hall, located
at 105 Post Road in North Hampton.
The series continues on July 17 with “An
Evening of Romantic Piano Music” featuring
Christine Petrucci and Friends.
The series will also feature cellist Dorothy
Braker and the All-Seasons Chamber Players on July 24; works by Berlioz, Debussy
and Stravinsky highlighted on July 31 during
“Balancing the Extremes: Songs for Voice &
Orchestra” presented by Jonathan Paul; and a
jam session with incomparable jazz saxophonist and storyteller, Lou Bosco on August 7.
A suggested donation of $10 for adults
and $8 for students and Seniors will be gratefully accepted. All proceeds will go toward
the Centennial Hall Building Fund or the
SAM Scholarship Fund. For more information,

Library plans ‘Harry Potter’ party
GREENLAND | The Weeks Public Library
will host a “Harry Potter” Party on Tuesday,
July 17 at 2 p.m.
The public is invited to come celebrate the
“Harry Potter” books and movies with wizard
games, broom decorating (bring a broom from
home), refreshments and a potions demonstration. The wearing of costumes to this free
event is encouraged.

SEACOAST | “The very act of planting
a seed in the earth has in it to me something
beautiful. I always do it with a joy that is
largely mixed with awe. I watch my garden
beds after they are sown, and think how
one of God's exquisite miracles is going on
beneath the dark earth out of sight.”
So wrote the Seacoast’s own Celia Thaxter in her 1894 book, “An Island Garden,”
which captures the essence of her beloved
garden nestled on the Isles of Shoals’ 95-acre
Appledore Island. The book, with illustrations
by Childe Hassam, is Thaxter’s beautifullywritten first-person account of the blossoms
and blooms that she tended throughout the
gardening season.
“Ever since I could remember anything,”
Thaxter penned, “flowers have been like dear
friends to me, comforters, inspirers, powers
to uplift and to cheer. A lonely child, living on
the lighthouse island 10 miles away from the
mainland, every blade of grass that sprang
out of the ground, every humblest weed, was
precious in my sight, and I began a little garden when not more than five years old. From
this, year after year, the larger one, which has
given so much pleasure to so many people,
has grown.”
Even to this day, Celia Thaxter’s island garden still provides much pleasure for the many
people who venture out to see the heirloom
flowers and plants growing there, thanks
to the restoration efforts in 1977 by Dr. John
Kingsbury. Visitors enjoy viewing the same
kind of abundant and blooming color which
captivated resort guests, artists and musicians
before the turn of the 20th Century.
Kingsbury was the founder and first director of the Shoals Marine Laboratory (SML),
operating as a partnership between the
University of New Hampshire and Cornell
University. SML provides hands-on marine
science field experiences for undergraduate
students, as well as summer courses for students in high school and education courses for
families and adults. Additionally, SML offers
limited public tours of Celia Thaxter’s garden
each year; proceeds raised by the tours benefit
SML’s student scholarship fund.
The tender loving care needed to make
Thaxter’s island garden flourish in all its
beauty is in the talented and capable hands
of volunteers like Mark and Pamela Boutilier, owners of Appledore Arbor in North
Hampton. The Boutiliers recently announced
that reservations are currently being accepted
for this season’s tours, which typically take

(Editor’s Note: This is the
third of a multi-column series
in recognition of the 60th anniversary of the graduating Class
of 1947 of Hampton Academy
and High School. This retrospective was written on the
occasion of the Class of 1947s
50th anniversary.)
At the graduation ceremonies from sixth grade to
seventh grade junior high,
the Class Prophecy was
given by Barbara Garland
on June 12, 1941. Graduation
“diplomas” were presented
by Miss Elsie Bartlett with
appropriate ceremonies.
Velna G. Adams greeted
us as we found our seats
in seventh grade. It wasn’t
hard to settle in with this
young, red-haired teacher
who really seemed to care
about us. However, she was
still called Miss Adams as a
mark of respect.
When the Honor Roll
came out on November 7,
1941, the following names
appeared on the list: William
Davidson, Ruth Edgerly,
Barbara Garland, Dorothy
Henderson, John Holman,
Mary Kuntz, Frederick
Russell, David Thirsk and
Nancy Wright.
The following month,
on December 19, 1941, the
Honor Roll produced these

with 46 members, we again
were fortunate to retain
Miss Adams, who directed
us with two, one-act plays,
entitled “Elmer and the
Love Bug” and “Pretty Girl
Wanted,” with the cast and
helpers numbering 30.
It doesn’t seem possible
that eight years are coming
to a close and now we must
prepare for graduation from
eighth grade to high school.
Miss Adams was instrumental in organizing our graduation with a program as
follows:

Frederick Russell presented the Class Gift to
the school and Mr. Clifford
Eastman presented the Athletic Awards. The American
Legion Awards were presented by Mr. Dean Merrill,
representing the American Legion Post #35 of the
Hamptons.
The guest speaker was
Mrs. Wayne P. Bryer, a member of the school board, with
music for the exercises provided by the entire eighth
grade class. The program
closed with the singing of

STRATHAM | Most teens already experience back, neck
or joint pain. Unreleased muscular tension is the most
common cause. Whether the tension was caused by stress,
injury, or repetitive movement, it must be released by the
brain.
Believe it or not, it is possible to learn how to retain or
regain muscular comfort and control in one or several
Somatics classes, by harnessing the same skill mastered
when first learning to walk.
To that end, experiential Somatic classes for teens and
adults will be held on Wednesday mornings, July 18
through August 22 from 9:30-11 a.m. at King's Tae Kwon-Do

catastrophic. And the only alternative for the short term bonding was to raise the gasoline tax or allow unacceptable delays
in needed highway projects. Opponents said the state is
approaching its bonding limit, and should tighten its belt and
make tough spending choices. And postponing a $120 million bill for two years, with no plan to pay for it, was fiscally
irresponsible. The Senate PASSED the capital budget 21-3, and
the Governor is expected to sign it. A YES vote FAVORED the
capital budget.
(F) DON’T FORCE NURSES TO WORK OVERTIME
EXCEPT IN EXTREME SITUATIONS | HB797 would forbid
health care providers from forcing nurses or nurses' assistants
from working more than 12-hour shifts, with certain exceptions, such as during surgery or a public health emergency.
The debate was over those exceptions. A proposed amendment would let caregivers require overtime because of shortages due to adverse weather, or the unscheduled absence of a
caregiver. Supporters of the bill said the amendment would
open so many loopholes that nurses would still be forced to
work so many hours that their judgment could be impaired
and their patients put at risk. Opponents of the bill said that in
certain situations, a tired nurse is less dangerous then no nurse
at all. The amendment FAILED, 11-13. A YES vote OPPOSED
the bill as is, and FAVORED making it a bit easier to force
nurses to work overtime. The Senate passed the tougher law
and the House agreed on June 13. The bill now goes to the
governor.
(G) PARTLY AT FAULT | HB143 would reverse recent
state court decisions that allowed the jury to allocate damages against those who have not been named by the plaintiff.

whereas before the defendant needed to go after that money.
Opponents of the bill say that the courts have it right. Under
the old system, plaintiffs were encouraged to settle with
someone who might be mainly responsible for a nominal
amount because that person is not insured, while only going
after someone only tangentially responsible because they have
deep pockets. But supporters of the bill said it was not fair
for defendants — who were primarily insurance companies
— to use the “empty chair defense" to shift blame to those
who aren’t even in the courtroom to defend themselves. If the
plaintiff wins the case, it should be the insurance company
that goes after other responsible parties, not the plaintiff.
The roll call was on to table the bill, a non-debatable vote.
But judging from that vote, supporters of the bill wanted to
table it to improve it so it had a better chance of passage,
while opponents wanted to vote on it as is in the hopes that
it would fail. The Senate voted to TABLE the bill, 15-8, which
eventually passed the Senate on June 7 and the House on June
13. The Governor vetoed the bill July 2. A YES vote appears to
support the bill.
(H) DON'T TEST EVERY CHILD FOR LEAD | SB176
would lower the blood lead level required to trigger an investigation as to whether landlords should clean up lead paint,
not just in the apartment the child is in, but every apartment
in the building. This amendment would require that health
providers screen all children for lead poisoning. Supporters of this amendment said that the state could save more
lives testing than by forcing landlords to remove lead paint.
Opponents said that regulations already target screening in
high risk areas and high risk cases, and that what is needed is
more action when lead is found. Besides, universal screening
for children too young for school would be difficult to enforce.
The amendment FAILED, 11-13. A YES vote FAVORED universal screening for lead paint poisoning. Both the House and
Senate agreed on a final version of this bill — without universal screening — on June 27. The bill goes to the Governor, who
was expected to sign it.

McMurray ends winless streak

During a press conference
last week, NASCAR’s head
man, Brian France talked
about the sanctioning body’s
stance on penalties.
Judging by the mail
received from readers of this
column, more than a few fans
believe the only way cheating is going to stop is if they
send a car home. However,
NASCAR has been unwilling
to do that in the past because
it doesn't want to upset the
fans and the sponsors of that
particular car.
However, France said
he did actually envision the
penalties getting to the point
where they kept a car from
being in a race, or suspending
the regular driver.
“We'd like not to get to
that,” said France. “We'd like
to make the deterrent, a portion of the penalty, significant
enough that that isn't necessary for us to do. But are we
willing to go there? Of course
we would. We have in the
past and we will in the future.
We're not hoping to do that.
That's sort of a death penalty.
“We prefer to get there
other ways. But that's something we're going to leave
open. Ultimately we'll prevail, as we have through the
years,” France continued.
“There's always cycles where
for one reason or another
penalties seem to be up. Now
we have a brand-new car. In
fairness to the teams, there
always is some ambiguity, for
one reason or another, somebody didn't get clear. We have
to take some of that into consideration.”
France predicted, “We
will prevail down the road
because it's the integrity of
our product. The first thing
you have to do if you're us
is make sure that there's a
high degree of confidence
with the other race teams,
fans and others that whoever
won the race last weekend
did it fair and square. That's
our first important point we
have to make. And we think
we're there. There's not a lot
of debating that.
“Now you can debate
we're not getting there fast
enough, penalties aren't high
enough. We've had more penalties than normal. That's all
fine to discuss. But the premise of keeping a fair playing

premier series will be known
as the NASCAR Sprint Cup
Series beginning January 1,
2008. The logo was unveiled
in a press conference at Daytona International Speedway
last Saturday.
“NASCAR has an incredibly loyal fan base, and we listened closely to fan feedback
to help make this decision,”
said Tim Kelly, chief marketing officer of Sprint. “It was a
long and thorough process to
determine how to integrate
our NASCAR sponsorship
into our overall brand strategy, while still keeping the
NASCAR fan at the heart of
the decision.
“The process extended
well beyond the NASCAR
sponsorship. This is an evolutionary time for Sprint
Nextel’s brand. Our new
brand campaign focuses

it, when they want it. NASCAR was built on a tradition
of speed, so it was a natural
tie for us.”
Sprint replaced R.J. Reynolds’ Winston brand as title

The Freshman year finished in June 1944 and most
of the class looked forward
to the summer vacation and
then back to school in September as sophomores.

McMurray
couldn't
believe it. It was his first win
since subbing for an injured
Sterling Marlin at Charlotte
in 2002 — exactly 166 races
ago.
“It took a while, but it
was worth it,” said McMurray. “I always said for five
years there would never be
another emotional victory
like Charlotte. You wait so
long to win. Every driver
out here can tell you how
special it is.
“I started crying, and
I’m like, ‘Why am I crying?’
Because I was so happy.”
The 0.506-second margin
of victory was the second
closest finish in NASCAR
history since the advent of
electronic scoring in 1993.
“You always hope you
can be up front when these
things get close to the end,”
said Larry Carter, crew chief
on the No. 26. “But Jamie
just did a super job tonight.
He never lost his cool, and
drove the wheels off the
car.”
It was the second victory
of McMurray's career. He
showed from the beginning
after starting 15th he had
a car that could win. After
going under the yellow line
to pass Jeff Gordon early in
the race, NASCAR sent him
to the end of the field of cars,
and he had to work his way
back to the front.
McMurray and Busch
swapped the lead seven different times on the last lap,
according to the speedway
scoring loops.
“I think everything was
going well, but we just didn’t
have a lot of help from our
teammates tonight,” said
Kyle Busch, driver of the
No. 5 Hendrick Chevrolet.
“There wasn’t much I could
do on the last lap.”
Following Kyle Busch
across the stripe was brother Kurt; Carl Edwards was
fourth; Jeff Gordon, fifth and
Greg Biffle, sixth.
Rounding out the top10 were Clint Bowyer, Matt
Kenseth, Kasey Kahne (who
made a nice recovery from
an early-race accident), Jimmie Johnson and David Gilliland, who ran in the top-five
towards the end before losing the handle and spinning
out on the backstretch.
Several of the Cup big
dogs, including Dale Earnhardt Jr., Tony Stewart,
Denny Hamlin, and Kevin
Harvick were involved in
wrecks and finished back in
the field.
During lap 15 Denny
Hamlin, driver of the Gibbs
No. 11 was leading the race,
while his teammate, Tony
Stewart was running a close
second.
Stewart bumped Hamlin
causing both cars to wreck.
Afterwards Stewart blamed
the accident on Hamlin,
saying, “All of a sudden he
(Hamlin) just stops in turn-4
in front of 42 cars, and he
can’t expect all of them to
drive around him.”
Hamlin originally said
Stewart was to blame, but
later backed down and said
it was his own fault.
Dale Jr. wound up 36th.
“I don't know what happened in the first wreck.
You tell me ... we got run
over,” he said. “I had slowed
down and was clear and
then somebody hit me hard
from behind and I was looking backwards up the track.
That's frustrating when you
come out here with a great
car that had what it takes
to win the race and then get
taken out by someone not
paying attention. The rest
of us got it slowed down
alright, so I don't know what
he was doing. Even after
we wrecked, the guys fixed
the car and we were pretty
decent until the second time
we go run into the wall.”
