Electrical outlets have been placed under each table upstairs in the Carnegie – laptop users can plug in and not
have to rely on batteries!
We’ve got Federal and California tax forms … come and
get ‘em! Sorry, but no, we can’t make sense of them any
better than you!
The American Library Association has picked this year’s
winners of the best books for children and teens (the Caldecott and the Newbery awards). Turn to pages 4-5 to
learn more.
We have over 240 current magazine and newspaper subscriptions … and comfortable armchairs to enjoy while
you catch up on the news, fashion or a favorite hobby.
Any older issue can be checked out to use at home.
Of particular interest are two new sections for all things Children and for
Young Adults. Each features original
artwork by local Dixon graphic designer Jeremy Hodges and artist Jen
Hodges of Crop Marks Graphics and
Design.
Another new feature is the Events Calendar. It helps connect users with various flyers and information about all of
the Library’s programs, classes and
activities.
After working with a web designer to
create the basic look, the Library staff
reviewed “hundreds” of other library
websites to identify best practices, important content and essential categories of information. Staff teams developed working plans, and then reviewed and revised initial versions.
Few changes had been made to the
original Library website since its introduction almost 11 years ago!

AD-HOC BUILDING
COMMITTEE BEGINS
WORK FOR NEW LIBRARY
TO:
We’re getting ready for early June, 2013.
Perhaps you’ve experienced it yourself. Or heard it
from your child or from a neighbor: “The Library’s
crowded and busy. The computers were all in use.
And all the books on my subject were checked out.”
FROM:
Our Dixon Neighbors
Greta Galindo
FROM THE
REFERENCE DEPARTMENT
President, DPL Library Commission
The Library Ad-Hoc Building Committee met
in January to begin its task of organizing the
many different aspects of the work needed to
plan, fund and then build a new library
building in Dixon which would open its doors
in June 2013.
What will the group focus on? Here’s a broad
outline:
• Creation of a project timeline and work
plan
• Selection of library building consultant
• Determination of types of space to be in
new library; development of a building
program guide
• Review of use or nonuse of existing
buildings
• Selection of architect
• Review of financing options
• Development of ballot measure
• Fundraising
Much of the group’s work will result in
recommendations which will be acted upon by
the Library Commission and/or the Governing
Board of Trustees.
Opportunities for community awareness,
input and discussion will come through a
series of forums which will be held throughout
the work span of the Committee. And each
meeting of the Commission or the Trustees
will also afford an opportunity for community
input.

The Library Commission has seen the numbers:
• circulation is up over 30%
• number of people in the building is up 15%
• items requested from other SNAP libraries is
up over 20%.
And this library is not alone. Neighboring libraries
are reporting similar increases. It’s largely due to the
economy; people avoid bookstores and video stores
and turn to the Library for books and DVDs.
Individuals who lose their job use the Library
computers to file the unemployment claim, and to
look for work; naturally, many résumés are being
prepared on our computers as well.
But for Dixon, there’s one more thing: elementary
and middle school students don’t have school
libraries to use as their first source of material for
reports and projects. So the Library has moved from
being the school “backup” to being the “only game in
town.”
Now, libraries find ways to rise to the occasion. The
staff and the Commission feel strongly about the
special role the Library plays in times like these.
Yet it’s a real challenge to do it in a building that –
right now -- is only 1/3 the size it should be. This
building has no more space for: more books, more
computers, more seating, more study space, more
programs, more resources, or even more staff. It’s
just maxed out. It serves as a real chokepoint for
good service, serving more users, or initiating needed
programs such as Literacy tutoring.
Join us as we work towards a new library for Dixon.
Help make it a community asset for today as well as
whatever tomorrow brings!

May Day
Early 1900’s
1876
That was the first year the Dixon May Day
celebration appeared in the Dixon Tribune.
The Knights of Pithias were in charge of
the day’s events, and they chose
Miss Amelia Hall as the Queen of the May.
Starting in 1886 the May Day celebration
May Fair 1954
was a two day event, mainly revolving
around the horse races at the new pavilion.
That pavilion site is still known as the May
Fair. Check out our website for more
historical photos! www.dixonlibrary.com
