The Vandalia Union was established in 1864 by H.S. Humphrey as a Republican newspaper. The Vandalia Leader was established in 1889 as a Democrat newspaper, with J.M. Albdert, Carl Dieckmann and T.W. Hart – as well as men from Shobonier and Bingham – putting up the starting capital, according to Vandalia Remembered, published during the town’s 175th anniversary. A later owner of The Vandalia Leader, K.B. Mills, until his son, Charles, who began working at the newspaper in 1937, became a partner in 1947. The Millses purchased The Vandalia Union in 1958, and while both papers were printed at The Leader’s facilities, each retained its identities, with The Union printing on Mondays and The Leader on Thursdays. The two newspapers were combined under one masthead, The Leader-Union, in 1978. A family corporation was formed shortly before the business was sold to Landmark Community Newspapers, based in Shelbyville, Ky., on Oct. 1, 1979. After the sale of the business, Charles Mills continued working in the commercial printing part of the business and by writing a weekly historical column, Mills’s Musings. Today, The Leader-Union is printed on Wednesday afternoons and carries a Thursday publication date, with the combined experience of the staff totaling more than 120 years. In addition, the entire newspaper also appears online at www.leaderunion.com, the newspaper website that also regularly features videos and photo galleries. The Leader-Union also has two pages on Facebook: The Leader-Union and Leader-Union Sports.
