WHO, WHAT, WHERE??
The museums are full of curiosities and
interesting finds . Here is a fun game to see
if you can guess some of our curios. The
picture below is a person, place, or thing in
our collection; try to guess who, what or
where. Answer will be on page 3.

Collections - Artifact of the Month
A Moment to Remember Margaret Nussbaum
A strong supporter of the Siouxland Heritage Museums, Margaret Nussbaum passed away on September 21, 2016. Margaret served on the Siouxland
Heritage Museums Board from January 2002 to December 2007, then served on the Siouxland Heritage
Museums Alliance Board from 2007 to 2009. She was
born in Rock County, Minnesota in 1936 and lived on
the family farm in Garretson until she graduated high
school. Margaret then attended Augustana College
and Black Hills State to earn her teaching degree. She taught for one
year and in the 1970s began selling real estate. Margaret loved history
and was proud of her Norwegian heritage and the history of her community. The staff at the Siouxland Heritage Museums was very grateful for
her involvement in the museum.
Exhibits— Upcoming Exhibit
Wow! It’s October already! We have just de-installed the Prairie Traveler exhibit and now we are getting the gallery ready for our next exhibit:
“The Tipi.” The walls are getting painted and we will even have new carpet too. Once this is complete, we will be able to start installing the exhibit. There will be many opportunities to help out if anyone has time in the
month of October. If you like lifting and don’t want to go to the gym, come
hang out with us. We will be bringing up a lot of items we have built from
the shop to the gallery! If you don’t like manual labor and can cut a
straight line, we will have many murals to trim and prep for hanging.
There will also be a week that we will be installing artifacts if you would
like to help with that. Just give us a call or stop by, and we can match a
project up for you! Mark your calendars for November 17 from 5-7 for the
opening!
Are you looking for something to do?
The museums are starting lists for some upcoming projects, and if you would
like to be involved let Jessie know via email [email protected]
or call 367-4210.
 Looking for volunteers interested in helping put up Christmas Decorations at the Pettigrew Home and Museum on November 29th from
9:30am to mid afternoon.
 The Winter Concert Series will be starting at the Old Courthouse Museum the first Friday in November, and we are always looking for a few
more volunteers to help sell lunches to the concert goers.

Memorabilia from the Barrell Drive In of Sioux Falls returned to the Museums this summer, this time as a donation
rather than a loan. In October 2008, Cruisin’ Cuisine: Drive
-Ins of Sioux Falls opened at the Old Courthouse Museum
and proved to be a very popular exhibit. Among the local
restaurants featured was the Barrell Drive In, founded in
1939 by Lillian and Lloyd Eagan. Objects and photographs
related to the eatery on South Minnesota Avenue were
loaned at that time by members of the Eagan family. These
same objects have now been given to the Museums for the
permanent collection. They are a wonderful addition to our
holdings and document the nostalgic, fun side of Sioux Falls history.

Thank you for all the help in September. Side walk Arts, Homesteader Day and Kids Activity Day were all very successful. Our
calendar in the Education Department is starting to fill up with
school programs, and we are booking more every day. The
Haunted Bus Tour is sold out, but tickets are available for the
Voices from Our Past Woodlawn by Lantern. We are also looking
for volunteers to help guide the groups through the cemetery on
Oct 20, 21 and 22. The museum Halloween Party is on Oct 31
from 3:30-6:30. We need volunteers to help count people, give
out candy, assist with crafts and direct the crowds of adorable
children.
If you are interested in volunteering for any of these programs
please contact Jessie or call Kevin at 978-7007. Thanks again for
all you do. Have a Spooktacular Halloween!

WHO, WHAT, WHERE??
Answer: Artifact 1997.27.6 Is a Hair
Ball. This hairball, also known as trichobezoar, was removed from the stomach
of a slaughtered cow at the John Morrell
and Company. Hairballs are most prominent in cats, rabbits, and cows, but they
have also been found in almost every
animal with fur, including humans! Any
animal that grooms itself by licking will
form hairballs within the intestinal tract.
The hair collects in the stomach and
compacts into an orb. Varying in size,
cow hairballs are some of the largest
made. This hairball is 22.5 inches around!
World’s
Largest Cow
Hairball is in
a museum in
Garden City,
KS with a
diameter of
38 inches
around.
