It’s Time to Renew Your Support!
Tri-Valley Animal Rescue is a local
East Bay, nonprofit animal rescue
group, run solely by volunteers.
We do not have payroll or lease
expenses, so the money raised goes
directly towards saving homeless
animals. With your help in 2010,
TVAR gave 980 animals another
chance! Please use the enclosed
donation form and envelope to
renew your TVAR support.
Together Forever:
The Story of Kyo and Zuki
TVAR volunteer Lindsay Baird is a college student who fostered four
kittens last summer and fall. Lindsay recently shared a great kitten foster
and adoption story with us that will tug at your heart strings…until you
get to the very unexpected and happy ending.
In late July 2011, I picked up two foster kittens from East County Animal Shelter
and named them Kyo and Zuki. When I got home, I put them in a cage together
and they began to groom each other and fall asleep. For the month that I fostered
them, they never left each other's side.
I began bringing Kyo and Zuki to
PetSmart for the weekly adoption
events. Every time I went, I hoped
and prayed that they would be
adopted together. One day, a nice
family came into the store. The dad
came up to me, pointed to Kyo, and
asked, "Is that a Russian Blue? My
daughter is allergic to cats, but we
read that many people with allergies
are immune to Russian Blue cats." I
said, "Yes we do believe he is a
Russian Blue." The family then took
turns holding Kyo. "We'll take him,"
said the father, Patrick Genzale.
Zuki (left) and Kyo are two brothers who are
very attached to each other.
I was happy that Kyo was going home with wonderful people, but my hopes of
him getting adopted with Zuki vanished. While I filled out the adoption papers,
Kyo and Zuki napped together. When the paperwork was finished, I opened the
cage, picked up Kyo, gave him a kiss, and gave him to his new family. Then I
looked back into the cage at Zuki and my heart stopped. He didn't even notice
that Kyo was gone. He was still fast asleep.
When Zuki woke up on the way home, he looked confused. Then, the meowing
started. And it didn't end for hours. At home, he paced and walked around in
circles looking for Kyo. I gave him extra attention, but I could tell that he just
wanted his best friend back.

That’s Amore Fundraiser A Big Success
By Mike James
The That’s Amore fundraiser,
held at Castlewood Country Club
on November 5th, was attended
by over 200 supporters.
On November 5th, 2011 TVAR held its annual That’s Amore fundraiser at beautiful
Castlewood Country Club. The venue was stunning and the feedback we received was
incredibly positive. Over 200 of our supporters and donors helped raise over $50,000
– much needed funds that will go directly into our animal programs. Both our silent
auction and live auction items were beautifully presented and well received – so much
so that this was one of our most successful That’s Amore fundraisers ever. Every
member of TVAR‘s Board of Directors was present as well as many of our wonderful
and dedicated volunteers.
A great deal of work goes into planning and coordinating an event of this size and a GREAT BIG THANK YOU goes
out to Lisa Healy, Kathy Deenihan and Susan Ruxton for leading this charge. We know it was not without its share
of stress and strain! Of course none of this would have been possible without the help of our tireless volunteers, many
of whom come from National Charity League (NCL) a mother/daughter volunteer organization committed to
community service, so a huge thank you to all of you who helped make this the best That’s Amore yet!
Our work is never done so we need to start thinking about and planning for next year‘s event and welcome anybody
who is interested in helping.
Calvin Gets a Home, a New Name
and a Peanut for a Friend
By Kari L. Petznick
Calvin, an approximately five-year-old pit bull, came to us at the shelter as a stray and
wasn’t in the best of shape with sores on his body. Cindy Churchill was the first volunteer
to take a liking to Calvin and treated his sores until they healed. No matter what his prior
treatment had been, Calvin never exhibited any aggressive behavior. His only vice was in
wanting to chase the shelter cats.
Calvin soon became a shelter favorite amongst the volunteers and the staff at East County
Animal Shelter. He always had a smile on his face. Calvin had been at the shelter for 2
months and time was not on his side. If not for the faith and hard work of the staff and
volunteers of Tri–Valley Animal Rescue to find Calvin a new home, he would have become
just another statistic, something that can happen no matter how stellar the animal.
Calvin (Leroy) and his new sister
Peanut nap peacefully with each other
after a tough day of play.
Luck was on his side though, and Calvin found his family, including a sister-dog named
Peanut, and was given the new name “Leroy.” We couldn’t have asked for a more loving family to adopt our special
boy and give him the best home possible. The family brought Leroy and Peanut to the shelter for a visit with his old
friends who could easily see that Leroy couldn’t be happier.
This is one of the many success stories that come from the hard work of our volunteers, but there is still a lot to do.
Tri–Valley Animal rescue is always in need of volunteers to socialize the animals at the shelter and/or foster animals in
their home. Contact us today if you’d like to volunteer and be part of your own Calvin (Leroy) story!

TVAR Lifeline — Spring/Summer 2012
COVER STORY continued
Later that week, I got a call from Patrick Genzale. He said that his daughter
had a serious allergic reaction to Kyo and that they would have to return
him to me. I cannot even explain how happy Zuki was. They were reunited
and I was happy. I thought about adopting them myself. I loved them
deeply, and I wanted them to be together. But I brought them both back
to PetSmart a week or two after Kyo was returned to try again. My mother
came with me. She's great with people and very persuasive.
That day, a man named David came into the
store. He saw Kyo and immediately wanted to
hold him. He was intrigued by Kyo’s laid-back

him. How could I say no? But Zuki was once
again left out. When I finished the adoption papers and handed David his new kitten, my
mom jumped in and asked him if he would please re-consider adopting Zuki. Very matterof-factly David responded, "Well...sure. Why not? What's one more?"
I couldn't believe it! There David was, ready to leave PetSmart, and my mother saves
Zuki. She was my good-luck charm that day. I filled out Zuki's adoption papers, said
goodbye, and sent him home with his brother and his new family.

Cali’s Jingle
A very special 812⁄ -year-old girl named Cali Sullivan wrote this jingle. Cali is TVAR President Sue James and
husband Mike’s grand niece. She plans to sing this jingle as she jumps rope to raise money for animal rescue.
Give a dollar, save a dog
Don’t you be a money hog.
Make their little hearts swell,
Care for them and treat them well.
In exchange, they’ll be your pal.
Treat them well, give them all their rights,
And they’ll cuddle with you on stormy nights.
Gave a dollar, saved a life
Now you’ll live with no strife.
Be a hero to a fish and grant their biggest wish.
Take them home and play with them
And the sprout of friendship will grow a stem.
Give a dollar, know you’ve helped
Save a dog, a cat, a fish
And you’ve just granted their biggest wish.
Take them home, you won’t be sorry!

Kudos to Freshman Janelle Tanis
TVAR Teen Program Volunteer
Kudos to Sarah Fortunati
Janelle Tanis knew about TriValley Animal Rescue long
before she started volunteering
in the Teen Junior Program
three months ago. The 14-yearold actually adopted a Boarder/
Terrier puppy named Miya from
TVAR two years ago.
With two dogs, a cat, and a chicken at home, Sarah
Fortunati certainly doesn‘t need to volunteer at the
East County Animal Shelter to get her animal fix. But
the 13-year-old eighth grader looks forward to just that
every Tuesday and Thursday when she volunteers at the
East County Animal Shelter. “I love animals, and the
idea of working with them,” says Sarah.
She signed up for the Teen
Junior Program over a year
ago, but had to wait until this
October to start volunteering
due to a busy school schedule.
Her younger sister, Paige, has
also volunteered in the
program. “I can’t wait to come
each week,” she says.

acquainted area at the East County Animal Shelter in Dublin
“I was looking for quite a while,” says Janelle, whose
family had only owned a cat up to that point. The next
day at the Farmers Market Adoption event in Pleasanton,
Janelle’s mom saw Miya.“I didn’t want her because at
the time I was devastated that we weren’t going to adopt
a Sheltie. I had my heart set on one,” Janelle admits.
Miya got adopted by another family, but then returned
shortly thereafter. By then, Janelle’s outlook changed
about the whole thing, and she soon had a new fourlegged forever friend.
Sarah Fortunati socializes a shelter dog after taking her for a
walk outside of the East County Animal Shelter in Dublin.
Sarah has two dogs, a cat, and a chicken at home.
Sarah‘s experience with her own dogs—a Doxen named
Jenny and a Chihuahua named Poppy– makes her a
natural for working with the animals at the shelter. She
also has a cat named Dewie (named after the Dewie
Decimal system) and a chicken named Pi. She says her
dad, an engineer, is the math lover in the family. “I
really love science,” says Sarah, who adds she would
like to be a scientist when she grows up.”Science is
such a huge subject, and I think I would really like to
work in space.”
“It would be hard to imagine my life without Miya,”
says Janelle. “Ever since we adopted her, she has been
like my daughter. My family says I am like her mom.
We wrestle a lot and chase each other. Every night she
sleeps in my bed.”
Janelle has been a very active member of the Teen Junior
Program at East County Animal Shelter, walking both big
and small dogs, as well as socializing the cats. She says
Jona, Tyler, Wallie, Tucker, and Trixie are all shelter dogs
that have had a special place in her heart. A freshman at
Amador Valley High School in Pleasanton, Janelle is
maintaining a high GPA with hopes of one day fulfilling
her dream to become a veterinarian.
Along with Paige, Sarah also has an older sister
named Taryn, and a younger brother named Alex. We
are very glad to have Sarah on board each Tuesday
and Thursday at the Teen Junior Program, and it’s
pretty safe to say the dogs and cats are glad to have
her there, too!
And in case you were wondering if she is serious about
that, she reads veterinary medicine books from cover to
cover for fun.
Thanks, Janelle, for all that you do!

TVAR’s Facebook page is
1,000 Fans Strong and Growing
Just over a year and a half ago, Susie Newton and other
Tri-Valley Animal Rescue volunteers helped launch the
organization into the social media realm. On October 24,
2011, TVAR’s Facebook page got its 1,000th fan, a
number that continues to steadily grow!
By Kevin Metz
updated with new content.
It is especially nice to see
people who have adopted
animals from TVAR send
in stories and current
pictures of their pups and
kitties.
You can visit TVAR’s Facebook page to read stories of
successful adoptions, information on upcoming events
and fundraisers, general communication, and of course, to
see lots of pictures and videos of animals up for adoptions.
TVAR’s Facebook page has definitely become an online
destination for volunteers and supporters alike.

on the Tri-Valley Animal Rescue Facebook page.
“If anyone would like to contribute photos or info for
the TVAR Facebook page, they can either upload
directly onto the wall from their own Facebook profile
and I will repost it, or email the info directly to me at
[email protected],” says Susie. “If there are any
volunteers who enjoy spending a lot of time on Facebook
and would like to help out as administrator of the TVAR
page, they should contact me at the same email address.”
“I usually check it throughout the day while I have down
time at my job, and post info that comes to my
attention,” says Susie, who is one of a handful of
administrators for the page. “I often work very long
hours, so I check it when I need a mental break.”
It is the contributions of Susie, other TVAR fosters/
volunteers, and so many supporters that keep the page
Not ready for a lifetime commitment?
Become a foster parent! It is FUN!
Foster parents are the life blood of a volunteer organization like Tri-Valley Animal Rescue and we currently need your
help to provide foster homes for our puppies, dogs, cats and kittens. In cooperation with East County Animal Shelter
in Dublin and other local area shelters, TVAR works to socialize and find forever homes for animals who find
themselves at these shelters. The increase in the number of homeless and abandoned animals requiring services means
that TVAR is in need of additional foster homes to temporarily house these animals, some of whom are recovering
from medical procedures or, for whatever reason, do not thrive in a shelter environment.
For those interested in dog and puppy fostering, we need you to provide love, play, and transportation to vet
appointments and adoption day events. We provide you with crates, food, bedding, toys and medical care. For kitten
and cat fosters, volunteers are needed for the bottle baby program (kittens that don’t eat on their own), kitten program
and the adult cat ‘vacation relief’ program. TVAR provides the food, litter box, bedding, toys and medical care.

Four easy steps to bathing your dog
Let’s face it, bathing a dog in not
really fun or easy. Presented here
is a method and tips devised
to maximize the results and
minimize the work involved with
bathing your dog.
1. Brush your dog completely. No sense in washing hair
that isn’t staying!
2. Fill a small container or bucket with warm water. Add
enough shampoo to make a soapy solution. Using a soapy
solution will allow for faster distribution of the shampoo
as well as make rinsing a breeze!
3. Use a sponge (tile-grout or carwash sponges work
great) to apply the soapy-solution to your dog. You can
also use the sponge to scrub in the areas you might not
want to touch (armpits, private parts and bottoms). When
using a medicated shampoo, allow the lather to sit on
your dog’s skin for 8-10 minutes before rinsing. This step,
By Dr. Chris Tripi, DVM
often overlooked, will allow the medicine to soak in for
maximum effect.
4. Rinse your pet and towel dry. Brush again to remove
additional loose hair and any tangles.
Ideally, your dog should be washed indoors. By washing in
a bathtub or tub/shower area you’ll have the ability to heat
the water and place a stopper in the tub. If a medicated
shampoo was advised by your veterinarian, allowing the
bath water to fill up around your dog’s feet will allow the
medicated shampoo to soak into the nooks and crannies of
the feet. A good foot soaking is important because dog’s
feet are usually one of the first places that a dog will develop
allergic skin issues.
Please note, if you are using a topical flea product
(Advantage®, Frontline® or Revolution®) you must wait
48 hours before or after a bath to apply the product.
These products rely on the oils on your dog’s skin to
spread. Bathing temporarily removes these oils.
Harley’s Wonderful New Life, Ten Years Later
By Bettina Davidson, Harley’s Forever-Mom
We adopted Harley, a Rottweiler-mix, in front of PetSmart almost 10 years ago. We
stopped there to pick up something between soccer tryouts, when they were
unloading the pups. We had to get my daughter back to tryouts, so I dropped her
off and dashed back, because I really wanted the littlest female. Someone else was
also interested in her so I filled out the paper work as fast as I could. My son still
says he has never seen anyone write that fast!
Harley, a former TVAR foster,
hanging out with two other former
TVAR fosters who are now her sister
and brother.
I remember when we first got Harley home, she saw her reflection in a mirror and
went running, and crashed into it. I think she thought it was one of her litter mates.
Then she just sat there and whimpered. Molly, our older dog wasn’t thrilled with the
puppy at first, but when we weren’t looking she would play with her.
Harley, who just turned 10, has two rat terrier two-and-a-half-year olds and a brand new terrier mix in her pack. Harley
is an amazing dog and has been a loyal companion. I love my shelter puppies and would only ever adopt a rescue dog.
Thank you TVAR for all you do!

CATS
DOGS
Gavin is a gorgeous orange and white
tabby with personality to spare. He loves to
play and loves to snuggle. This guy can really
purr! Gavin provides all of the fun of a
young cat, but none of the "over the top"
behavior of a kitten. Gavin has been
neutered, microchipped for identification,
tested negative for FeLV and FIV, fully
vaccinated (including rabies), and treated to
prevent worms and fleas.
Dora is a nine-year-old pitbull mix who is
ready for adoption after a long battle with
food and flea allergies. Dora has the most
adorable undershot and while she is tolerant
of most dogs, she is an alpha female who
prefers submissive companions. Dora has
good house manners and is great in the car.
Dora is housebroken and is crate trained.

Hayley wins our award for "Feline

everyone was surprised when Hayley was

While in foster, Hayley has shown herself
to be good with dogs and children, but

pound spayed female terrier mix. She's a
little shy, very sweet and lovable, but also
pretty active. She responds well to verbal
corrections and is eager to please. She is
crate trained which will need to continue
to be fully house broken. She seems to
like older kids but probably is not well
suited to a family with young active kids.

TVAR ’s Mission
Tri-Valley Animal Rescue (TVAR) is a nonprofit, all
volunteer organization whose mission is to end the
unnecessary euthanasia of homeless animals. TVAR
cooperates with area shelters and rescue groups, primarily
the East County Animal Shelter, to provide homeless
animals with socialization, foster homes, medical care and
the opportunity for another chance.
