Pictured on the cover are a few of the 370 items recently received
from Dr. David and Karina Rilling of Sellersville, PA. They are sharing
their passion for native African and Oceanic arts with us, adding to a
list of donee institutions that includes the Brooklyn Museum, Bowers
Museum, Brown University, the College of Wooster, Wake Forest
University and many others. We are very grateful they have selected
us as a worthy recipient of their generosity. There are several other
donors to the collections whose names are appearing in SHERDS for the first time.
Many thanks to them as well!
After months of preparation, our new website will soon debut. When first launched
in 2001, we were one of the first museums to have a web presence. Since that time
of course, we have been joined by many thousands of other museums and topicspecific sites. Some of the historic and cultural background we provided has become
unnecessary as that information is being provided by others more strictly focused on
those topics. We are therefore content to use our site for information about the
museum and its programs.
See what we’re up to now at www.museumoftheredriver.org.

Programs
Recent Programs
Curatorial Associate Dr. Mario Rivera again led an archaeological field operation
in northern Chile with a student crew from Beloit College and anthropology
professor Dr. Daniel Shea. One of their projects in recent years has focused on
carbon-14 sequencing of local tamarauga trees. The results are providing a
dendrochronology (hitherto unavailable) to aid in dating sites throughout the region.
This year’s Great Museums II tour to St. Petersburg, Russia and Vienna, Austria
took ten participants to visit the major collections found in those two former imperial
capitols. In addition to seeing the Baroque glories of the 18th century, and the
amazing collections amassed worldwide in the 19th century, group members were
exposed to current Russian research on the prehistoric cultures of central Asia.
Great Museums III will focus on Italy in 2013. The major tour offering in 2012 will
be Emeralds and the Emerald Forest of Brazil, scheduled for March 24 - April 2.
Dr. Robert Brooks, State Archeologist and Director of the Oklahoma Archeological
Survey, provided his annual update on projects being pursued by his office and
other agencies in the state. His presentation was co-sponsored by the McCurtain
Gem and Mineral Club.
Museums, Music and Mayhem is the new program being offered this year to families
which combines the resources of the Museum with offerings of other cultural groups.
Visits to regional symphonies, performing arts venues and other museums are
included.
The Museum’s annual Gem and Mineral Show, co-sponsored by the McCurtain Gem
and Mineral Club was held September 27 - October 2 this year, drawing visitors from
throughout the region, including numerous school groups.
People
Condolences to Office Manager Vickie Smith and her family on the passing
of her grandparents, Georgia and Travis Sparkman, who were generous
donors to the Museum.
Keeper of Collections Daniel L. Vick and Curatorial Assistant Jeanette Bohanan
attended the annual Oklahoma Museums Association (OMA) meeting held in
Claremore, OK. Director Henry Moy served on the OMA Awards Committee for 2011.

Casas Grandes/Mata Ortiz-XO\2FWREHU
The small village of Mata Ortiz in northern Chihuahua, Mexico has become
world renowned for its art ceramics. Using local clays and adapting centuriesold techniques for decoration, the artists create works which are unrivaled for
sophistication of expression and design. Ceramic production and/or marketing
now consumes the efforts of about ½ the adult population of the village of 1000.
