Wilderness Ridge Trail Llamas
Wilderness Ridge Trail Llamas
2016 Gear & Llama Sale
About us:
WY August 2015 with our favorite stud Shaman.
Family elk hunting trip ID September 2015
Wilderness Ridge Trail Llamas was founded in 2013 in Eastern Idaho. Llamas have been a major part of our lives since
2010. Prior to that horses and solo backpacking is how we explored the back country. When great pack llamas became
harder and harder to find we began to buy every quality pack llama we could afford. We realized that we wanted to have
pack llamas our entire lives and that the only way to do this was to bite off as much as we could chew and maybe a little
more and start breeding them. We feel as llama breeders and packers that we need to be actively promoting llamas. Our
commercial outfitting and llama rentals help spread the word about the capabilities of the working llama. We have
searched all over North America for proven pack llamas to add to our herd. We feel we have gathered some of the top
pack stock available and the most genetically diverse herd in the country. With the foundation of our breeding program
now in place our goal is to continue to produce top quality pack stock for those looking to get into pack llamas for
generations to come.
Here are the 5 services we offer:
1. Llama rentals
2. Llama sales
3. Stud services
4. Fully guided tours & fishing expeditions in Wyoming & Idaho
5. Sale of llama packing equipment & gear
Beau Baty Founder & Operations Manager:
I love 4 things in life: my family, God, the outdoors, and llamas. Exploring new places in the backcountry and looking for
wild animals is my passion. I grew up on a cattle and horse ranch in the Wellsville Mountain Range (known as the
steepest mountain range in North America). This is where my desire for backcountry adventures began. I will do
everything I can to help our customers and guests to be 100% satisfied with their purchases and backcountry experiences.
If you ever need anything or have questions about llamas, hunting areas, maps, backcountry meals, gear or anything
along these lines please give me a call or email me. I make it a priority to answer your calls and emails as soon as possible.
Kirstin Baty- Owner & Field Manager:
Llamas came with Beau when I married him. At first, I wasn’t sure how llamas were going to fit into our lives together.
But now, four years later, I can’t imagine life without them. Having llamas has helped both of us stay mentally and
physically active as we explore new areas of the world and take on new adventures together. My favorite part of owning
llamas is to watch the new babies grow each spring. Llamas have enriched our lives and we hope that others can find
equal enjoyment and happiness from them too.
Neck Bands: $25 + S&H
1.
2.
3.
About our Neck Bands: As you can see in the first imagine with just a camera flash at night the reflective tape really
does reflect well when a light shines on it. In this picture we were packing out a deer in Wyoming (see images of the
hunt at the bottom of the page).
Our llamas are very important to us and a part of our family. We don’t want anything to happen to them if we can
prevent it. We always try to be proactive and mitigate potential issues while in the backcountry. The neck bands are
made out of denier cordura, commerical grade velcro, and high visibilty DOT spec reflectvie cloth. Every thing is binded
and sewn on. Nothing is glued into place. These neck bands handle the extreme weather very well.
When you look out your tent at night to count the llamas or check them in the early morning before you hike out it is
very nice to count quickly and see each one (even the black llamas). If you ever loose a llama in the backcountry the
extra visibilty of the neck band may just save the day. If you are hiking during the fall months it is always a safe bet to
make sure hunters know your llama is a domestic animal by marking them with the neck band so they don’t accidently
get mistaken for an elk, deer, bear or something else.
Quick Release Safety Bungee: $30 + S&H
1.
2.
3.
About Our Quick Release Safety Bungee: Have you ever had a string of llamas and had one of them go around the
wrong tree? Or had one llama jump a stream with another llama strung behind it? Potentially you have been at a stream
crossing with a string of llamas and they are all thirsty but only a few can reach the water because of the position of the
llamas? If you are packing with llamas in a string eventually you are bound to have a mix up/tangle up of some kind and
having a quick release could prevent injury to you or your llamas.
All these examples are things that have happened to us on the trail. This is why we designed the quick release safety
bungee. We simply attach the bungee to the saddle (reference image 3). Then attach the trail lead carabineer to the
quick release in image 2. When you are ready to go, the set up will look the main image and image 1.
The bungee will stretch 2x its original length and will break at 1000 pounds of pressure. The stitching that holds the
quick release in place will also break at 1000 pounds of pressure. Our thought has always been that a loose llama is
better than a dead or injured llama. The quick release safety bungee has prevented many accidents, injuries, tangled
messes and rodeos. Feel free to call us to inquire more about this bungee system.
Trail Lead 6.25 FT: $25.50 + S&H
1.
2.
About Our Trail Leads: Our trail leads are made from double braided nylon rope commonly used as anchor lines and
shorelines. When we started commercialy outfitting and renting llamas we realized that most people are uncomfortbale
tying secure knots. This is why we designed a trail lead that never has to be tied. It has a brass bull snap that connects to
the llama (imagine 1) and then the carabiner is connected on the opposite end of the lead rope (image 2). When you
need to stop for lunch or to take a break you simply wrap the lead rope around a branch or tree and then clip the
carabiner back to the rope or the halter of the llama without ever tying a knot. Our guest, guides and rental customers
have found this to be quick, simple, safe and secure. The images above are from a lead rope used on the trail after 3
seasons. As you can see there are no knots or hardware connecting the rope to the bull snap or ring. All of the trail leads
are braided back into themselves for maximus strength and weight reduction. We feel that 6.25 feet is the optimum
length when stringing llamas together. This allows them to eat and drink when needed and also gives the handler
enough room to walk without the llama being too close.
Stake Out Lead 12 FT: $27.50
1.
2.
3.
About Our Stake Out Leads: We use green dog stakes to stake down our llamas when we are done hiking for the
day. We pack a 12 foot lead that stays connected to the stake. We offer two options of stake out leads- Imagine 1 & 2
are knotted stake out leads and image 3 is the braided option. We prefer the braided option for sleekness, weight
reduction and strength. The carabineer connects to the stake because the stake has a 3 way swivel on it. Then we
connect the carabineer of the trail lead to the brass swivel in imagine 1 of the stake out lead and then your llama has an
18.25 foot radius to browse from. If you are in an area where you need a short stake out you can just use the 12 foot
lead or you have the option of using the 6.25 foot lead.

Custom Built Panniers by Wilderness Ridge Trail Llamas
When we first started building panniers we bought every brand and tried every design on the market. We
started building our own designs because we never found a pannier that had everything we needed. After 6
different designs we feel we finally hit the mark.
We have 2 different designs that have been tried and tested on our commercial pack string in 6 different
western states and for thousands of rugged miles. They are more durable and user friendly than any other
pannier on the market. If you are looking for panniers that can carry heavy loads year after year and put up
with the abuse of rocky and timbered terrain then try a set on your next adventure.
Model: Deluxe Wilderness Pannier

Llamas for Sale
Here is our llama classification and price break down. We also included our sale disclosure at the bottom of
the page. Please call us if you have any questions. 208.270.7749
Cria- is a new born llama. When they are born they get weighed every day and are asked to step up on the
scale. They learn voice commands (stand, step up, all done) and learn their name this way. We begin Mallon
training at birth and incorporate a few other methods we have learned along the way.
Weanling- is a young llama just weaned from its mother typically 7-9 months old. At this stage we halter train
them and get them very comfortable being brushed and having their feet picked up. They get trained to stand
still when approached and haltered out in an open pen.
Yearling- llama that has reached its one year mark. At this stage they are starting to be lead through obstacles
and start building a trust level with their handler. They are taught to go in and out of the trailer. Stake out,
saddle and desensitizing training takes place. This is the earliest that we would sale any llamas. Price for
yearlings ranges from $500-$2000.
2 Year old- this is when the llamas get to go on the trail and learn to travel. They get their first overnight
experiences and carry only panniers loaded with empty 4.5 gallon square buckets. We do this so they learn the
dimension of their pack. At this stage they learn water crossings, tree crossings, bridge crossings, and to be
staked out overnight. Prices range from $1000-$3000.
3 Year old- our goal with the 3 year olds is to get them as much light duty experience as we can. Typically 100150 trail miles is our goal in many different types of terrain and multiple overnight stays. This is when they
first get to handle some weight. We put 20 pounds per side on each llama. Price ranges from $1500-$4000.
Packer in training- these are the 4 and 5 year old packers that are building their muscles, lung capacity and
learning their job as pack llamas. This is where we find out who will go on to the commercial pack string and
rental string. These llamas are carrying 60-80 pounds each and are going much longer distances than the 3 year
old llamas. We try to accumulate 400-500 miles for these packers during these training seasons. Price ranges
from $2000-$4000.
Family packer- these packers can be any age but are typically 5+ years old and have trail experience. These are
llamas that will not make it on the commercial pack string but are still solid pack llamas. You should expect
these llamas to hike 3-5 miles with 1000-1800 feet of elevation gain with 50-60 pounds. They are not endurance
packers and should not be pushed to go long distances every day. They make great family, recreational and
day trip packers. Price ranges from $500-$1500
Seasoned packer- is typically 6 or 7 years old. They have learned their job, they are a quality packers and
anxious to get more miles under their belt. In our opinion this is the beginning of a pack llama’s career. They
are expected to carry 70-80 pounds and keep up with the best packers. They might have a few quirks to work
out that will take this last season before sending them out with the public. Price range $2500-$4000.
Commercial packer- typically has over 1500 miles of trail experience. Our commercial packers are required to
carry 70-80 pound payloads 4-10 miles a day for consecutive days with a lay-over day every 3 or 4 days. Our
commercial packers can go with any of our guest or renters. They are very versatile and a true beast of burden.
When the Inca bred the working llama we think this is what they had in mind. Hiking multiple days in a row
for many miles with heavy payloads. Price range $3500-$4000.
Top End packer- these packers are rare and near flawless. They set themselves apart by their endurance,
athleticisms, confirmation, and over all pack ability. From their years on the trail they have excelled in every
way and met every task given to them and then some. These are the packers that earn breeding rights. Price
range $5000+.
We are currently breeding 18-25 females each year. This year we are expecting 21 crias between March & May.
We will be updating the website with pictures of the crias and young llamas as they age and progress in their
pack training. If we don’t have what you’re looking for right now or if all the llamas have sold for the year
please call or email us to get put on the sale list for next season. We will be selling a few llamas every spring.
If you are interested in buying your first pack llamas we recommend coming on an overnight trip with us or
someone you know with llamas. You can also sign up for a fully guided trip during the summer. This gives
you the opportunity to experience llamas first hand and see trail hardened packers at work as well as ask all
the questions you may have. It is also a good call to rent llamas a few times prior to buying them so you can
build your confidence and knowledge of what to expect from trained pack llamas.

Wither Height: 47”
Weight: 367
Price: $3,500
Class: High performance packer, ready to enter his first full pack season

to breed and train them as pack llamas. He is very strong, well balanced and a relentless packer with high

started a new genetic line for us and has proved to be a great asset for our breeding and packing operations.

will offer health inspections for each of the llamas traveling out of state free of charge. We would like to keep
the llamas at our ranch until the end of March for training purposes and to allow for safer traveling conditions.
