Changes.
Summer is now slowly going as the nights are drawing in and the
curtains are being pulled earlier in the evening. So now to a nice time of
the year when the trees change colour and bring some beauty into the
gardens.
There have been a lot of changes this year in my life and also in Church
life in general. In my life I have lost my beloved friend and neighbour
and I have had to change my way of life drastically- thank you all for
your support.
Several of us went to Donald’s 50th anniversary of ministry and now he
and Haro are having to change to a life of retirement, which is usually
busier.
Our Moderator Roy Lowes retired and we have now welcomed our new
Moderator Steve Faber, so a very big change for our Synod. They were
two very inspiring services.
There are big changes going on around the world with people leaving
their homes and trying to make a life in other countries, especially
Britain, so we must try and treat everyone, whatever their background,
colour or creed, with love, care and support. It won’t be easy, and will
make a lot of people feel really uncomfortable.
I know people don’t welcome changes easily, (I am one of them at
times) and feel most uncomfortable with the idea of doing something
different, but if we don’t want our Churches to die out and be closed we
must be prepared for change and try to feel more comfortable with new
ideas being shared.
I am sure that Jesus didn’t always feel comfortable with things going on
in his life and around him.
God bless you all,
Rosemary

Calais migrant church leader happy to stay in camp
Mima, the Ethiopian pastor of the church in the so-called 'Jungle'
refugee camp in Calais has said he is no longer trying to get to the
UK. Instead, he believes God wants him to stay and help distressed
people in the camp.
In a recent interview with Premier Radio Mima said: “Maybe Jesus
has brought me [here]. For me it's better than to go to England." And
in a message to Christians in the UK, he said: "If you can, come and
visit us and see. If you can't do that - pray. Pray for the immigrant
people...the ones who are dying on the Mediterranean Sea, those
who are dying on the train station when they try to go to England. All
Christians need to pray for these people. Ask Jesus to give us
protection and send the angels. We're eating once a day. We don't
have any facilities. People are dying."
In light of recent criticism of the migrants from various quarters of
British life, the Church of England has called for more sympathy for
those in the camp. The Bishop of Dover, the Rt Rev Trevor Willmott,
told Premier Radio:
“Some of those people in Calais at the moment have come from the
most horrific situations, where they've been subject to violence;
where they've had their homes destroyed. And we have to say to
ourselves what would happen to us if we were in that place? We're
very fortunate in England, we've got freedom."

WEDDING ANNIVERSARY.
As mentioned last year at this time, only one couple in our congregation
tied the knot in October and that was Linda and Paul Duffy whose
anniversary is October 18th. Best wishes to them.
CHRISTENINGS.
Recently, we have had 2 christenings in church.
On August 30th Charlotte Elizabeth, daughter of Martyn & Bronwen Todd
was christened by Mhari. It is lovely to see and hear Charlotte each
Sunday and often during the week as well.
It was the turn of Mila Josephine, daughter of Mark North & Megan
Edgington, to be christened on Sunday 6th September.
WELCOME.
On Sunday 20th September, 8 new members were admitted (amid much
clapping) to our church at a special service. None of the 8 are in fact
“new” to us as all of them are “old” friends who have been part of the
fellowship for quite some time. They are:Jon Atkinson
Ann Banning
Fred & Anne Holloway
Trevor Jones
Barbara Jones
Hugh Maccallum
and Joy Verral
We wish them a long and happy association with Abbey Hill Church.
UNWELL/HOSPITAL
Vic Jones is still in the rest home in Warwick and Rosemary has now
completed 5 of her 6 chemotherapy sessions. On the whole she is
coping marvellously.
Helen Green has been quite poorly for most of September. She has had
a chest infection. It was nice to see her back in church last Sunday
(20th).
Jack Dixon is in Coventry Hospital. At the time of writing he is off the
critical list but is still very poorly.
Esmé Thorpe has been under the weather a bit for the past fortnight but
is on the mend.
We continue to pray for Eileen Bates, Dorothy Roe, Eileen Brining,
Rosemary Lumley, Joan Lightbown, David Steen, Grace Mitchell,
Dorothy Barker, Peggy Everall & Jan Roberts.
All of the above mentioned and any who do not wish to be mentioned by
name, are in our thoughts and prayers.
THANK YOU.
As many of you know, Helen Green was unable to have her Afternoon
Tea event due to illness, and it was held instead in the church hall. 18
people braved the elements (it poured with rain all afternoon) and Helen
would like to say a very big thank you to all who attended and for their
generosity in raising such a substantial amount.
Please let Pat Cowan know on 01926 864400 if you have any news of
the church family.
The true way to live is to enjoy every moment as it passes, and surely it
is in the everyday things around us that the beauty of life lies.
Laura Ingalls Wilder.

COMMITMENT FOR LIFE – Recent Highlights
On August 2nd Linda Mead asked us ‘Who Do You Know?’ - neighbours,
family and more - and told us of Maureen in Zimbabwe who was ill and had
her house demolished but was taken in by a neighbour and supported by
the community. She spoke of the ‘Common Good’ and how God loves all,
and how the URC’s 1% Appeal became Commitment for Life 20+ years
ago and works through Christian Aid partners to help the vulnerable help
themselves.
The CforL Update package, promised by Linda, arrived soon afterwards
and includes:1. A leaflet entitled ‘Bridges, Not Walls’ re. the ‘World Week for Peace in
Palestine and Israel’ - Sept 20-26 - with a useful map and information and
comments including one from a Rabbi.
2. The CforL mini-magazine entitled ‘Who is my Neighbour?’ ( the theme
of the service Linda led in August) & including photos and articles to “see
how you are making a difference in Zimbabwe, Israel and the occupied
Palestinian territory, Bangladesh and Central America” & giving people
hope through such schemes as elephant pumps.
3. Posters illustrating support in the above countries.
4. One World Week (Oct 18-25) leaflet -’the theme is ‘Hope In Action’ to
build a more equal and peaceful world.
5. Zimbabwe Day 22nd Oct. 11am - 3pm at Church House, London - open
to all CforL churches to hear about Christian Aid’s work Please book early.
6. New film about Christian Aid’s work in Israel and Palestine.
7. Competition for Prayer Writers - for the next CforL Prayer Partners.
8. New Fair Trade Coconut range from Traidcraft.
9. Order form for copies of the mini-magazine & other resources.
If you would like more information about any of the above, please ask me
and Don’t Forget - on Harvest Sunday 4th Oct. we have the opportunity to
contribute financially to CforL work through Christian Aid partners in Central
America, Zimbabwe, Bangladesh and Israel/Palestine.
P.S. If anyone else would like to contribute a ‘World Church’ article, I would
be pleased to know. Thank you.

Advent Sleepout Challenge 2015
This Advent the Church Urban Fund (CUF) is asking people in
churches around the country to give up a night of comfort and
organise their own sponsored sleepouts with friends, families,
churches and community groups.
The Advent Sleepout Challenge is a new annual fundraising event
organised by CUF and the money raised will help the charity with its
work, empowering some of the poorest and most marginalised
people in England to transform their lives.
Paul Hackwood Executive Chair of CUF said: More than 2000 years
ago, Mary and Joseph were forced to sleep in a stable and we want
as many people as possible to take this as inspiration to create their
own Advent ‘stable’. This could be in churches, community halls,
scout huts, local schools or even garden sheds. How they transform
the space is up to them, but most importantly, we want them to
come together, have fun sharing the experience and of course, raise
as much sponsorship money as possible.”
A dedicated website www.sleepoutchallenge.org offers resources and
online sponsorship details.
