Liver Support
Isula A4+, our journey continues - testing and studies.
In the previous two newsletters, we at Sabell Corporation filled
you in on our relationship with Dr. Cabanillas and how we decided
to get behind Isula A4+, by sharing the story of a persistent mother
fighting for the life of her son, Jarad. Let us now take you a step further
on our journey.
With Jarad’s remarkable improvement in the fall of 2000, we
undertook a small four-week test with six volunteers who had chronic
hepatitis of various degrees of severity. No adverse side effects were
reported, and even though there were no significant changes to
viral loads or to baseline liver enzyme levels, all patients experienced
profound clinical improvement. Although this study was short in
duration, the results were very promising and encouraged a more
thorough investigation into Isula A4+.
A controlled clinical test was then undertaken between May and
June in 2004. This 30-day test would assess the clinical, hematological,
biochemical, ultrasound, and anatomic manifestations in a group of
ten voluntary patients who carried chronic Hepatitis C. Five of the
patients were men and five were women, all of whom had been living
with the virus between four to thirty years.
By day 28 of the study, the patients had improved in every aspect
of Hepatitis C symptomology. This was demonstrated by the biochemical liver testing (in relation to hepatic synthesis) and liver
inflammation (shown in ultrasound testing).
These tests, in combination with the marked improvement
demonstrated by results on the “Quality of Life SF-36” scale and the
Beck Depression Inventory, provided evidence of marked decrease of
liver inflammation, near elimination of Hepatitis C symptoms, and
an overall sense of hope for leading a healthy, normal life. The authors
concluded that with the significant physical and mental indicators
of marked improvement in such a high percentage of the patients,
continued research of Isula A4+ was clearly warranted.
The authors stated no patient reported unpleasant side effects
from the therapy performed on them; however, hematological and
renal function control tests must be performed periodically. Isula
A4+ constitutes a very optimistic alternative treatment for patients
with chronic Hepatitis C.

Subsequently, Sabell Corporation decided to go “all in” and attempt
to develop and distribute Isula A4+ to the millions of individuals who
could benefit. However, in order to gain the necessary approvals and the
product license that was eventually received in July of 2012, more had
to be done.
In order to prove safety, toxicology testing was performed. In order
to understand how and why Isula A4+ was effective, anti-viral research
was conducted along with research to evaluate the anti-oxidant, antiinflammatory, and mucosal protective actions of Isula A4+.
Much was uncovered and explained including a much needed
understanding as to why Isula A4+ was so helpful in reducing the
crippling nausea experienced by so many individuals inflicted with
chronic hepatitis.
Sabell Corporation during this time was also able to convert Isula
A4+ from a hydro-alcoholic extract into the powder available today
through our good friends at Ecotrend.

Beyond Glucosamine
Current options for joint health supplementation suggest a greater role for anti-inflammatory
substances.

Many people would consider glucosamine to be the unrefuted leader
of joint health ingredients. Considering its role as a cartilage building block,
it is the intuitive choice for people suffering from osteoarthritis (OA), and
understandably so. However, the general lack of and conflicting evidence
surrounding glucosamine’s mechanism of action, coupled with the negative
results in relieving OA symptoms obtained from several large-scale trials, leaves
consumers and practitioners alike scratching their heads.
The role of anti-inflammatories is a well-known treatment model in OA, with
many OA sufferers using non- steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs),
and COX-enzyme inhibitors for symptom relief. Yet there is an increasing shift
away from the pharmaceutical approach toward natural treatment options such
as glucosamine. After all, many practitioners and consumers are wary of antiinflammatory drugs due to their association with cardiovascular and gastric side
effects.
Relieve it or not.
Perhaps the most publicized attack on the efficacy record of glucosamine
was a series of large-scale trials performed by the National Institutes of Health
(NIH), collectively referred to as the Glucosamine/chondroitin Arthritis
Intervention Trial (GAIT). Although some trends toward efficacy were present
in more severe patients, these trials demonstrated a synchronized lack of benefit
with regard to relieving osteoarthritic symptoms and disease markers compared
to placebo.
The road less travelled.
Some relative newcomers to the joint health scene are bringing an exciting
new world of safe and effective options to OA sufferers. Herbal extracts such
as curcumin are increasingly recognized for their effectiveness in relieving OA
symptoms, and all act via cytokine-mediated anti- inflammatory mechanisms to
slow cartilage degradation.
There is also the natural mineral complex known as SierraSil that has
significant anti-inflammatory benefits, reducing nitric oxide production and
inhibiting cytokine IL-1, which can decrease cartilage breakdown.
The overall spectrum of natural methods for preventing cartilage degradation
and battling OA symptoms shows the importance of reducing the inflammatory
burden. Cartilage health and OA relief are the dynamic result of supporting the
body’s anti-inflammatory processes by providing the correct materials.

While it is true that glucosamine is a precursor for in the production of the
extracellular matrix (ECM) components of cartilage, called glysaminoglycans,
there is evidence to suggest that supplemental glucosamine does not stimulate
anabolic (cartilage building) processes; in fact, in some cases ECM synthesis is
actually decreased in the presence of supplemental glucosamine.
This evidence raises the question of what role glucosamine actually plays in
cartilage protection and osteoarthritic symptom relief.
Tipping the inflammation scale.
Although the mechanism of regular glucosamine supplementation remains
murky and evidence for its clinical effectiveness is conflicting, the fact remains
that many people do experience relief of OA symptoms such as pain, swelling,
and stiffness.
The dual influence of glucosamine on cartilage cellular activity reveals the
fallacy of the simplistic “glucosamine in, cartilage out” argument, suggesting that
other factors play into this equation. An emerging alternative is that the level of
inflammation may affect the ratio of anabolic/catabolic processes, indicating
an anti-inflammatory role for glucosamine and potentially other natural antiinflammatory substances to further tip the scale in favor of OA prevention and
treatment.
