It’s summertime in Paris and while Parisians slow the pace, visitors step up theirs! New venues open all
the time, offering fresh opportunities to learn, marvel and enjoy one’s time in the city. ParisNews puts the
spotlight on one of the highest gardens in Paris, at the Musée de Montmartre, as well as new features
at Disneyland® Paris which is celebrating its 20th anniversary in style. A new restaurant serving culinary
delights with delicate flavours has opened in the heart of the chic Faubourg Saint-Honoré district, and
the French Football Federation shop has opened amid the excitement of the European championship and
the summer Olympics. Have a great summer!

The Musée de Montmartre unveils its new Renoir gardens
In the heart of one of the most emblematic districts of the French capital, the Musée de Montmartre has welcomed visitors since 1960 to the oldest house on Montmartre Hill, where no fewer than 14 famous names once
lived, among them Renoir, Valadon, Utrillo and Poulbot.
The museum’s collections retrace the history and the artistic, festive and everyday life of Montmartre Hill. Its
three gardens have just opened after being entirely renovated in a 19th-century style inspired by the works of
Renoir. Located only a short distance from the neighbourhood bustle, the first garden opens onto the façade;
its redesigned lawns are an inviting place to stroll. The second, with maple trees around a central pond, is
reminiscent of the wild garden in which Renoir painted The Swing. Finally, the garden on a slope, open to the
public for the first time, offers a unique view over the Montmartre vineyard, the Lapin Agile cabaret and the wild
garden of Saint-Vincent.
The museum will remain open throughout the renovation, due for completion in 2014, when it will offer visitors a
new and modernized itinerary including, for the first time, access to the refurbished studio of Suzanne Valadon.

New programme to mark 20 years of Disneyland® Paris
Disneyland® Paris is offering visitors exciting additions to the programme for its 20th anniversary, to celebrate this
major event on the Paris tourism calendar in style.
First and foremost is the world premiere of an all-new nighttime show, to be staged until March 2013. The curtain rises on the Disney Dreams®! show in a profusion of lights and colours as night falls. Images projected onto
Sleeping Beauty’s castle – the park landmark – and a host of special effects combine to sweep spectators along
into the heart of the action. Peter Pan plays master of ceremonies and enchants children and adults as he flies
off in the midst of ribbons of light in rainbow colours. The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Aladdin, Rapunzel… all the
legendary Disney characters come to life in this show in the heart of the park. Dazzling lasers, spectacular water
sprays, fireworks and lots of music add to the magic of the moment.
The traditional parade has also been transformed: visitors relive all the best Disney stories to music, with Mickey
Mouse bringing up the rear of the procession. This daily event is not to be missed!
Finally, the opening hours have been extended so visitors can enjoy the Disney magic for even longer throughout
the summer.

Les Collections, a new restaurant in the heart of the Faubourg
Saint-Honoré
For its new restaurant, the Sofitel Paris Le Faubourg***** once again approached interior designer Didier Gomez,
who designed its ‘couture’ suites and apartments, to create stylish decor inspired by Parisian chic and the theme
of fashion, which symbolizes the Faubourg Saint-Honoré district.
The motifs and fabrics were selected with the utmost care, echoing the process of creating a haute couture
collection, and the decor of the entire restaurant has been enhanced: large white pillars, carpeting with huge
beige and black mosaics… The calm atmosphere of the restaurant can also be enjoyed on sunny days on the
pleasant terrace in the middle of a landscaped garden dotted with fountains.
Chef Keigo Kimura reigns over the kitchen. The Tokyo-born chef has lived in France for the past ten years
and worked at a number of upscale restaurants including Marc Veyrat’s. Here, he takes great pleasure in giving
classic French fare a contemporary twist, creatively using seasonal produce with accompanying sauces, herbs
and spices that bring out the flavours of the dish. Specials include scallops with green apple and beetroot salad,
pan-seared langoustines with rosemary-flavoured bok choy and – for dessert – tropical fruit and spice sorbet
served in a meringue shell.
Didier Gomez has also succeeded in breathing new life into the lobby, which has become a dynamic space alive
with the coming and going of guests, and places the hotel firmly in the present day.

A shop for football fans
For the first time ever, the French Football Federation has catered to the general public with the opening of a
200 m2 store entirely devoted to football fans – supporters of the French national team (Les Bleus) in particular. This football-lovers’ flagship store sells the entire range of French team merchandise: it has more than
100 different items in stock for amateur footballers as well as team supporters. Clothing, accessories and
decorative objects as well as Nike FFF products for men, women and children are available; what’s more, they
can be personalized.

Brunching in Paris.
A contraction of breakfast and lunch, brunch is an English tradition that
has beeen catching on in the capital for several years. Many hotels and restaurants have adopted it
and added their particular touch of sweet or savoury essentially French products. From the gastronomic
brunch devised by great chefs to the relaxed brunches of Parisian bistros, here’s a look at some not-tobe-missed places.
Central Paris – Left bank //
Saint-Germain-des-Prés, the Latin Quarter and their surroundings offer a wide and varied range of places at
which to enjoy a delicious brunch. The chic and relaxed hotel Bel Ami, with its spacious and luminous loft-like
appearance, offers a copious organic brunch in a colourful room. On the buffet, numerous locally-grown vegetables, as well as fish, duck, cheese, oysters and fresh fruit juice. Rounded off with the usual croissants, bread,
eggs, desserts, etc., to satisfy all tastes and appetites. Not far away, in the lively rue de Buci, the modern brasserie Germain will delight those who enjoy design and flashy colours: a huge sculpture by Xavier Veilhan stands
as high as the ceiling. The simple and copious brunch consists of Benedict eggs, French toast, scones and real
fish & chips. Under the arcades of the Saint-Germain market hall, Point Bulles, a champagne restaurant puts
together a subtle and varied brunch of quail eggs, taramasalata with sea urchin, lamb tartare, ewe’s yoghurt …
Pared-down and elegant design at L’Alcazar, whose glass roof throws light on a sophisticated brunch consisting, amongst other things, of a wide choice of teas, mullet fillets, quail with honey and poached pears with
caramel. For the atmosphere of a New York morning, go to Ellis Island Café or Breakfast in America. Decorated
with photos of American stars, the former offers a choice of three brunches, Groucho, Chico and Harpo, accompanied with eggs and pancakes. Different desserts according to the brunch chosen. The second offers a huge
breakfast with eggs, pancakes, donuts and other US specialities including a ‘jus de chaussettes’ coffee. Another
reference to New York, with cheesecake, at Bread & Roses, an elegant place which is a bakery-patisserie, restaurant, tea room and delicatessen, which should satisfy numerous sweet and savoury cravings. Every Saturday,
its bread specialities feature on the menu alongside classy cakes and pastries. A veritable temple of chocolate,
Un dimanche à Paris offers two upscale brunches that delight gourmets. On the menu: foie gras flavoured with
chocolate, salmon with herbs and ginger, asparagus, pastries, fresh fruit juice, glass of champagne … Finally, the
huge teak deck of Le Quai invites you to have brunch on the Seine, below the Orsay museum. A magnificent
view and a substantial brunch: sweet pastries, pancakes, fruit salads, smoked salmon, wok dishes, kebabs, etc.

From the Marais to the Opéra Garnier district, there are numerous places to brunch on this side of the Seine,
notably in the 3rd and 4th arrondissements. Pamela Popo on two floors and with a terrace has a cosy bistro
atmosphere. It serves two English brunches with home-made cookies, eggs, bagels, salmon, César salad, carrot
cake … Near to the Centre Pompidou, Ozo serves an endless supply of mini-sweet pastries and slices of bread
followed by a selection of cooked eggs and salads. The Dôme du Marais occupies the former auction room of
mont-de-piété. The Sunday brunch is classic and copious (croissants and similar types of bread, slices of bread
and toast, main dishes, desserts) and may be served in the garden under a glass roof. Close by, Le Pain quotidien welcomes clients with long tables and a choice of three brunches based on organic products (home-made
bread, cakes and pastries and croissants, jam, pâté spreads, salmon, charcuterie, etc.). Still in the heart of the
Marais, visitors can enjoy brunch in a listed 17th-century courtyard on the terrace of the tex-mex restaurant
The Studio: pancakes, croissants and similar types of bread, toast and savoury ‘tortas’. More sophisticated, Cru
also has a fine paved terrace in the Village Saint-Paul. Sunday lunch features its speciality of raw meat and fish
dishes. Away from the noise of the city, L’Estaminet des Enfants rouges occupies the oldest market in Paris. Two
organic brunches are served in a convivial atmosphere: ‘traditional’ (charcuterie, cheese, salads, eggs, etc.) or
‘fish’ (smoked salmon, tartare of seaweed, etc.). Vegetarians will love the brunch at Bob’s Kitchen with its huge
selection of smoothies, salads, soups, futomaki and veggie stew, and oven-roast vegetables with wholemeal
cereals. In the same street, at the end of a courtyard, the Baroque and eclectic decor of Derrière embellishes
the copious buffet brunch that mixes basics (bread, toast, etc.) starters (salads, coleslaw, terrines, etc.), main
courses (salmon steak, club sandwich, etc.) and cakes and pastries. On the Place du marché Saint-Honoré,
Nomad’s serves brunch on its lovely terrace. A cultural space, an interior decor boutique and a restaurant dedicated to travel, all rolled into one, this ‘chic encampment’ has a classic but varied menu with unlimited fresh fruit
juice. Nearby, the luxurious Hôtel Saint James & Albany has in its restaurant the 202 Rivoli a magnificent patio
in a garden where you can enjoy a delicious sweet and savoury buffet that is set up inside. Near to the Bourse,
Bioboa has a minimalist and designer decor and serves a simple but flavoursome 100 % organic brunch: fresh
fruit juice, homemade cakes and pancakes, open sandwiches, croissants and similar types of bread, fromage

The north of Paris, from Montmartre to the area around the Grands Boulevards and towards the La Villette canal
basin, has plenty of places for brunch and caters to all tastes. Customers at Marcel, on the lovely avenue Junot,
in the shadow of Sacré-Cœur, can put together their own brunch from the menu: club sandwich, pata negra
ham, foie gras, organic eggs, pancakes, cereals … Nearby, the buffet at the Café qui parle features excellent
fresh products (fruit salad, eggs, fromage frais, pasta, tabbouleh, etc.) and is popular with local families who
are comfortably seated on the 1950s leather banquettes. Neither do you go away hungry at the Casa Lola which
has a terrace and serves up delicious homemade cakes and biscuits, savoury dishes (bricks, tartare, eggs,
etc.), together with onion bhajis and coleslaw. Culture and food are on the menu at Bal Café, an exhibition
venue in a former dance hall now devoted to visual documentation. At the weekend, the cafe there serves a
delicious Franco-British lunch with scones made with Échiré butter, cheesecake and other cakes, and original
dishes (chicken with fennel, radish soup). Also in the popular 18th arrondissement, the Hôtel Kube is tucked
away in a small street. On Sunday, people go there for its ‘Arty brunch’ during which an artist comments on his
work to a background of soul and jazz music. On the menu: savoury flavours (foie gras, tartare of tuna, etc.),
sweet delights (tiramisu with strawberries, waffles, etc.), bread and viennoiseries. Opposite the La Villette canal
basin, La Rotonde occupies a magnificent 18th-century building. On Sunday, the full (savoury and sweet) and
copious buffet is popular with food lovers before a walk along the canal. Another remarkable building is the
Centquatre, a former public undertaker’s. Now a centre for contemporary design, it has an excellent restaurant,
Les Grandes tables du 104, with long tables where customers can enjoy waffles, tapas, Spanish charcuterie …
which is either organic or a product of responsible farming. Rose Bakery can be found in the 9th arrondissement.
It is a tea room cum delicatessen and renowned for its English brunch: pancakes with maple syrup, bacon and
eggs, sausages, porridge, carrot cake, crumble … You will find all the classics here. Near to République, the very
hip Floréal, with its 1960s decor and pop colours has replaced an old local bistro. It serves an unusual buffet
that mixes pancakes, cheesecake, French toast, fruit salad, oysters, tartare of half-cooked tuna, egg Benedict …
Another surprise too at Nanashi, a Japanese restaurant with eclectic furniture and an open kitchen restaurant,
which has converted brunch into a bento. The result: a small tray with vegetables and salad, egg, boiled ham
or organic salmon. The basic set meal does not include sweet dishes, according to the Japanese tradition.

brunches too … Near to Étoile, the Royal Monceau Raffles offers two marvellous brunches in its restaurant
La Cuisine: a full breakfast (sweet and savoury) followed by a film on Saturday, and a Royal brunch on Sunday.
Laid out on an enormous sideboard, the latter includes an impressive number of sweet and savoury dishes of
real gastronomic prowess to enjoy in the hotel’s wonderful garden. Over at the Hôtel de Sers, the restaurant
chef has devised an elegant 100% organic brunch where sweet and savoury are in harmony: scrambled eggs
with caviar, Charolais beef with truffle purée, Irish salmon with champagne zabaglione, marshmallow lollipop
with chocolate, blancmange with red fruit … At L’Orénoc, the restaurant with exotic decor at the Hôtel Méridien
Étoile, a ‘Jazzy brunch’ is served on Sunday. Gourmet music lovers enjoy the sounds of a jazz trio while tucking
into seafood, grilled vegetables, numerous salads, dishes from all over the world and its buffet of desserts. For
those who enjoy orginal flavours, there is the Flora Danica, on the Champs-Élysées, in the Maison du Danemark.

with seaweed, and faisselle goat’s cheese. Near to Bastille, the Murano Urban Resort offers four copious buffets
in the neo-Baroque decor of its restaurant with all the ingredients of a high-class brunch, including champagne.
You can take your plate out onto the patio, whose glass roof opens in fine weather. Not far from here, foodies
will enjoy the fine food store cum trattoria Simone & Nicola run by two Italians. Their very substantial brunch
features Italian products such as homemade antipasti, cream of pumpkin and parmesan, charcuterie and mozzarella. Finally, on a terrace planted with olive trees and palm trees, La Bellevilloise presents two weekend
brunches. An ‘urban’ brunch on Saturday composed of sweet dishes and savoury bentos and a jazz brunch on
Sunday and on public holidays. On the programme: a jazz concert and a buffet of charcuterie, cooked dishes,

A mecca for fashion and beauty, the five Parisian department stores rival with each other in ingeniousness to
satisfy visitors. Situated behind the Opéra Garnier, the largest two of them Printemps and Galeries Lafayette,
are renowned worldwide and both carry the big French and international brands. To showcase their collections,
Printemps has just created a ‘Luxury and Accessories’ department on three floors. Galeries Lafayette has luxury
and designer collections for all tastes and every year it stages the world’s largest fashion show. As for Le Bon
Marché, it caters to more selective, luxurious and creative tastes, in keeping with its Left Bank spirit. Prestigious
names (Louis Vuitton, Dior, Chanel, etc.) and designers are grouped together in a section named L’Appartement
de Mode. Franck et Fils, the smallest of the five, mixes chic classic and trendy design in the decor of a private
mansion house. Finally, the BHV is somewhat different: it has fashion and beauty departments, but it is especially popular for its menswear department and the lower ground floor DIY department.

Improving your mind //
You can visit Galeries Lafayette just like any other place of interest. This year, the department store, which is
celebrating the 100th anniversary of its cupola, merits a special visit. It is therefore offering guided tours of its
monumental heritage (the great hall, neo-Byzantine glass cupola, and terrace) every week. Art lovers can also
visit La Galerie des Galeries, a permanent space with four exhibitions each year to promote French and international design by associating fashion, the visual arts, design and music. What’s more, for the last four years,
Galeries Lafayette has taken part in the summer cultural life of Paris with ‘Vitrines sur l’art’. Up to August 4th,

its windows on boulevard Haussmann are exhibiting extracts of exhibitions from several Parisian institutions:
Centre Pompidou, Cité de l’architecture et du patrimoine, Gaîté-Lyrique, Musée Galliera, Maison rouge, Bal,
Musée d’Art moderne de la Ville de Paris and Palais de Tokyo. Culture is also a priority for Bon Marché. Since
its foundation by Aristide Boucicaut in 1852, the store has been acquiring works of art. Today, it has some 50
paintings and sculptures that it exhibits here and there, varying where they are positioned to create a surprise.
Throughout the year, exhibitions, installations, meetings (with writers, designers, etc.) and other cultural events
are organized around its favourite themes: fashion, design and cinema. Also of note, La Grande Épicerie de
Paris, Bon Marché’s fine food store, regularly presents artistic and … culinary exhibitions. Also opened in 1852,
the BHV has made its contribution to contemporary design, by the creation in 2010 of an area devoted to it:
L’Observatoire du BHV. Situated on the 5th floor under the rotunda, this unique place, which offers a superb
view of Paris City Hall, exhibits works (photographs, furniture, textiles, paintings, etc.) by French and foreign
designers. Finally, to deepen your culinary knowledge, BHV and Galeries Lafayette organize cooking classes on
all themes (great classics, snacks, cocktails, etc.), given by professionals of L’Atelier des chefs.

Furnishing and equipping the home //
Choosing a lightshade, buying a bicycle, wine tasting accessories, dog accessories, or ordering made-to-measure
blinds … you can do all of these things at the BHV! The store on rue de Rivoli is undeniably the specialist on
equipment for the home, to which it devotes the largest surface area, including the whole of its lower-ground
floor – a huge ‘tool box’ for DIY enthusiasts. For the latter, it organizes themed workshops (renovation of furniture, painting, tiling, etc.) on Wednesdays and Saturdays. But the BHV is more than a homeware store. In
adjacent streets, it has opened several specialist stores: BHV Vélo (bicycles), BHV Moto (motorbikes), BHV La
Cave, entirely devoted to wine, and BHV La Niche, a mecca for accessories and food for dogs and cats. Another
Parisian institution for homeware: Lafayette Maison, opposite the Galeries Lafayette menswear store. Its five
floors are entirely devoted to homeware: utensils and small electrical appliances on the lower-ground floor; gifts
and interior decor objects on the ground floor; tableware and accessories on the 1st floor; furniture, textiles
and lights on the 2nd; bedding, bathroom accessories and household linen on the 3rd floor. Printemps too is
a reference for household furnishings, etc. This other landmark store on boulevard Haussmann has chosen to
cater to tastes for upmarket well-being, elegance and fashion. Printemps Maison has a luxury department on
the 2nd floor, kitchen and small electrical appliances on the 3rd floor, bedding and household linen on the 4th,

furniture and lighting on the 5th. At Le Bon Marché, a department titled La Maison d’Édition showcases art de

Eating something different … //
Shopping is tiring and it makes you hungry … Whatever their tastes, visitors will find just the kind of meal they
would like at one or other of the restaurants in department stores. For lunch in the sun while contemplating
Paris, direction Printemps or Galeries Lafayette. On the roof of Printemps Maison, Le Déli-cieux offers self-service
large salads, savoury tarts, hot dishes and sweet delights to enjoy while sunbathing or relaxing under the shade
of canvas. La Terrasse at Galeries Lafayette has called on the Japanese chef Fumiko Kono and on the pastry chef
Pierre Hermé to devise some original dishes (salad to drink, pasta with wheatgerm, Club muffin, Miss Gla’Gla
ice-cream, etc.), served under the open sky or under the shade of a sun umbrella. A wonderful view is also to
be had inside Printemps Mode, for those eating at La Brasserie. Situated beneath the huge cupola – a listed
historic monument – it offers traditional dishes with a modern twist: 12 hour-veal and trilogy of carrots, fillet of
beef and green asparagus with truffle flavours … As for Galeries Lafayette, they have a fast-food space, Vue sur
Coupole, where you can have a sandwich or a glass of champagne. At Printemps Homme (menswear store) with
its very British decor, designed by Paul Smith, fans of foreign food (risotto, César salad, cheeseburger, etc.) will
enjoy a relaxing lunch at the World Bar. They can also opt for the specialities of Sichuan Panda, the Chinese
restaurant at Galeries Lafayette whose menu demonstrates the culinary richness of this region; or cross the road
to Lafayette Maison, to order one of the delicious savoury or sweet dishes at L’Archicafé, its Italian restaurant.
As for wine lovers, they will head to Lafayette Gourmet, where Le Barouge where fine seasonal products are
prepared (lobster, gambas, entrecote steak, etc.) and served with a selection of wines from its sommeliers.

Italian cooking is given pride of place at Bon Marché; in L’Appartement de Mode, with transparent decor, the
Primo Piano delights guests with homemade pate, carpaccio and a variety of desserts. Finally, fans of sushi and
other Japanese dishes will enjoy eating at the Sushi Shop at BHV or the Sushi Bar at Galeries Lafayette, which
brings a French touch to its menu with patisserie by Arnaud Larher.

monsieur, viennoiseries, patisserie) for brunch or lunch, a tea and cake, or a savoury snack. The same goes
for the Lafayette Café and Lafayette Organic. At the former, a buffet of crudités, a rotisserie and ice-cream
satisfies foodies who can enjoy a panoramic view of Paris. The second has a cosy atmosphere and serves
delicious little dishes prepared with seasonal produce. On the ground floor of the store, there’s real Italian
coffee to enjoy after a sandwich or patisserie at Espressamente Illy, a fast food store which can also be
found at the BHV. Faithful to its image, Printemps puts the emphasis on upscale sweet and savoury dishes.
Ladurée has a tea room here in a Napoléon III salon where guests can sample the delights of its legendary
macaroons, patisserie and several cooked dishes. The Café Pouchkine, a French version of the legendary Moscow restaurant, serves a selection of exquisite pastries and petit fours. In its 18th century decor, you can also
enjoy pirojkis. A change of atmosphere with the designer decor at Cojean. Ideal for a light snack: colourful
salads, quiches, sandwiches, and desserts. At La Cantine du Bazar, at the BHV, the chef invites customers to have a quick snack at the ‘Côté snack’ or take their time at the ‘Côté restaurant’ to take advantage of the view over the Paris rooftops. Whilst at the BHV Homme, the cosy and relaxing Bert’s serves
toasted sandwiches, bagels, wraps, milk-based and fruit desserts. Snacks are upscale at the Café de la
Grande Épicerie. Whether you are at the Bon Marché or Franck et Fils, salads, sandwiches, steamed dishes,
soup and cakes and pastries will delight the most demanding food lovers. At the Bon Marché, they will
love the Comptoir Picnic where you can choose the composition of your salads and sandwiches, enjoy wokcooked dishes or dishes cooked a la plancha … Finally, again at Bon Marché but also at Printemps the
talents of two great chefs are shown in simple quick cooking. At Miyou, Guy Martin creates flavoursome
sandwiches, seasonal salads, soups and desserts. Whilst, the menu at the Café Be devised by Alain Ducasse (salads, sandwiches, soups, desserts) with artisanal products, gives a special distinction to fast food.

Buying gourmet goodies, tasting wine or champagne //
Le Bon Marché and Galeries Lafayette each have a huge fine food store (3,000 m2) with a vast array of
foodstuffs from all over the world, ranging from the most simple to the most sophisticated products. At La
Grande Épicerie de Paris at Le Bon Marché, as well as being able to buy marshmallows, chocolate or foie
gras in a jar, you can also buy takeaway dishes prepared daily by 20 cake and pastry chefs, 25 cooks and
20 bakers. For its part, Lafayette Gourmet offers a huge range of savoury and sweet products and also showcases French and international gastronomy through its tasting counters such as Dalloyau, Mariage Frères,
Petrossian, etc. For wine buffs, it organizes free tastings (after pre-enrolment) at its Bordeauxthèque, which
contains more than a thousand bottles … from Bordeaux alone, as does the BHV La Cave, which offers tasting sessions every Wednesday of wine from different wine-growing regions. As for lovers of champagne, they
should go to the Bar à Bulles, in the designer department of Galeries Lafayette. Top-quality cooks, pastry
chefs and chocolatiers have also opened shops on boulevard Haussmann. With its restaurant, Ladurée has
three outlets at Printemps, which sell, among other things, its famous macaroons. Another icon of national
gastronomy, Lenôtre has an attractive space within the department store, where it offers its fine food collections, cooked dishes and individual cakes. Finally, Lafayette Maison is home to the world renowned La
Maison du chocolat, where chocoholics go to feast on ganaches, chocolate eclairs and other mignardises.

best professionals for men and women. At Le Bon Marché, Le Théâtre de la Beauté organizes services for the
well-being of its customers throughout the year. To relax, Shiseido offers the Qi Lounge method consisting of
shiatsu and Western light gentle touches. The making up of all or part of the face is taken care of by Dior,
Chanel, Shu Uemura (eyebrows), Armani, Bobbi Brown (look) and By Terry. You can also book a manicure
or have false nails applied at Shu Uemura, Dior Nail Bar or Color Nail Bar Opi. For an up-to-date hairstyle,
you should go to Printemps Mode, where Massato brings a modern touch to haircuts in his white designer
salon. A must-do before resuming your shopping is a little visit to the Point WC on the same floor; it is an
original concept in public toilets that includes a shop for decoration accessories, and luxurious cubicles with
impeccable hygiene, each with different decor. The 2nd floor of Galeries Lafayette has hair salons and beauty
spaces. Hairdresser Jean-Marc Maniatis has opened a lively salon for cuts that are easy to manage and for hair
extensions. Classic or trendy hairstyles, hair treatments at the Kérastase institute, the Espace Franck Provost
has thought of everything to satisfy a varied clientele. It also includes the Espace Niwel, for frizzy, curly or
straightened hair. Before having your hair done, why not take advantage of the numerous lavish treatments
in a cubicle (single or communicating for two) by Spa Décléor: body, face and feet treatments, manicure,
waxing, hammam, or you can have a 15-minute treatment and manicure if you like at the Espace Mavala. To

Making life easier and pleasing their customers: department stores do everything possible to meet the demands
of their visitors, with a range of services. La Conciergerie at Le Bon Marché is designed to cater to every wish.
Spas, restaurants, massages at home … it has a large selection of addresses of establishments and upscale
professionals. The shop also offers three personalized paying services: Shopping Service, fashion advice and
decoration advice. The first makes it possible to shop in the company of a hostess, who introduces the client to
advisors in the departments visited. Fashion advice is given by professional stylists that help put together a woman’s or man’s wardrobe. For decor advice, a specialist comes to your home, and then makes their suggestions
at a subsequent meeting. Shopping can also be personalized at Franck et Fils, Printemps or Galeries Lafayette.

The store on rue de Passy offers Shopping sur rendez-vous for those who wish to benefit from some shopping
advice before buying their wardrobe. To choose from among the multitude of brands at the store, Printemps offers
a Personal Shopper, a free service by a fashion expert, who selects clothes and accessories adapted to the style

The second edition of “Afterworks du Club Affaires”

Paris seen by … No. 72
This month, ParisNews takes readers behind the scenes at the famous Musée Grévin,
which is celebrating its 130th anniversary in 2012. More than 800,000 people
visit this venerable institution each year. Véronique Berecz retraces its history
for us in this conversation. From historical figures to modern-day celebrities, the
waxworks in the museum capture the imagination of people of all ages.
The first question that we usually ask: are you Parisian? And how did you come to work at the museum?
V.B.: I’m a Parisian born and bred! I was born in Neuilly-sur-Seine in the immediate outskirts of Paris and,
since I’ve always lived in the city, I often visited the Musée Grévin as a child. I was fascinated even then by
the historical scenes on display. Fate led me to work for the museum. I’ve been here for the past 29 years.
Can you tell us how the museum came to be set up?
V.B.: The Musée Grévin came about at the initiative of the journalist Arthur Meyer, the editor of the daily newspaper Le Gaulois, which had its offices here in the Drouot district where all the publishers and newspapers
were based at the time.
Photography already existed back then, but hardly any newspapers used photos, unlike today. Arthur Meyer
had the idea of publishing a three-dimensional newspaper to introduce the men and women who featured
on the pages of Le Gaulois. He did this with the help of one of his satirical cartoonists, Alfred Grévin, who
was also a very famous sculptor and designer of theatre costumes, and who would become the art director
of the museum in the 1880s.
Gabriel Thomas, who Arthur Meyer hired to be the auditor, also participated in the new venture. He was the
nephew of the artist Berthe Morisot and had therefore always been surrounded by art; he was fired up with
enthusiasm about the site from the start. It is also to him that we owe the creation of the Théâtre des Champs
Elysées and the preservation in Paris of the Eiffel Tower; he had already come up at the time with the idea of
a company to manage the tower as a sightseeing attraction. He was soon appointed president of the Musée
Grévin, and under his impetus the museum project was given a significant boost.
The museum was officially inaugurated on 5 June 1882; at the time, it occupied only the ground floor, where
the two restaurants are today. It was an immediate success! Parisians and visitors flocked to see the collections at the Musée Grévin.
Visit itineraries were created, with themes ranging from the catacombs to the history of a crime. A trail of
historical scenes was introduced in 1889 to celebrate the hundredth anniversary of the French Revolution.
There were one-off pieces that had been specially acquired, such as Marat’s original bathtub! The itinerary
exploring the history of France was introduced in the 1950s.
Another not-to-miss feature of any visit to the Musée Grévin is the Palais des Mirages. It was Gabriel Thomas
who came upon this attraction, then known as the Palais de l’Illusion, at the 1900 Universal Exhibition. He
asked its creator, the engineer Eugène Hénard, to transfer it from the Palais du Trocadéro to the museum,
where he changed its name to Palais des Mirages. The sound and light show that visitors were invited to see
after it was installed in 1906 was nearly ten times bigger than the original one! A major renovation in 2006
restored it to its original splendour: the light effects are by Bernard Szajner, and the soundtrack by Manu
Katché.
To set up the theatre in 1900, Gabriel Thomas called on two friends of his, the renowned sculptor Antoine
Bourdelle and the painter Jules Chéret. The former created the high relief and other sculptures and the latter
the painted canvas of the stage curtain. The theatre was listed in 1964.

The descendants of Gabriel Thomas – a very energetic man without whom the museum would not be what
it is today – were in charge of the Musée Grévin until 1999. It was then taken over by the Parc Astérix Group
and became the Grévin & Cie group. Since 2002, the Musée Grévin has been part of the group La Compagnie
des Alpes.
More recently, the year 2001 marked a major change: the museum closed for five and a half months for a
large-scale renovation (until then it had never been closed, except for one day during the Second World
War!). The museum re-opened with a new visit itinerary and more than 80 new waxworks among the 250-plus
figures currently on display.
Speaking of which, how often are new waxworks of celebrities added to the museum’s collections?
V.B.: We add four to six new celebrity wax figures per year. They are usually unveiled before the school holidays at various times of year.
Who decides which celebrities will be displayed?
V.B.: Since 2001 we have had an Académie Grévin chaired by Bernard Pivot to make the decisions: the twelve
members of the committee are all journalists in memory of our founder, Arthur Meyer.
The choice criteria are always the same: we select people who are in the news, not necessarily established
names. It’s a snapshot of the news at any given time. The discussions are usually friendly, but can get quite
heated. Some of the management’s choices are also made because of the desire to attract new visitor categories. For example, Bollywood star Shahrukh Khan came from India to inaugurate his waxwork, placed next
to Gandhi’s.
Where do most of your visitors come from?
V.B.: Fifty per cent of our visitors are French – 25 per cent from Paris and the other 25 per cent from the
Paris region and elsewhere. The number of visitors from Eastern Europe, Russia and India is on the rise, and
we have witnessed a sharp increase in the number of visitors from Asian countries such as South Korea and
China, as well as from Brazil. A visit to the Musée Grevin is like reading a Tintin comic – it’s something that
appeals to the whole family.
What are the various stages of creating a new waxwork?
V.B.: First we contact a famous person. They might refuse, but in general they’re flattered and amused to be
asked. We set up the first meeting in our workshop – two or three hours to get all the information we need
and take casts of their hands, and sometimes even their teeth and feet. We also study the colour of their
eyes, their hair, their skin etc. In some exceptional cases, we travel to where the celebrity is – for example,
we did that with Michael Jackson, Celine Dion and Roberto Benigni.
The second meeting takes place at the modelling stage to check the volumes; these days we use a new 3D
scanner technology.
The third meeting takes place as close as possible to the official inauguration evening to check the hairstyle
and make-up; this stage is done with oil paints.
Are there any particular celebrities who impressed the team?
V.B.: Among French celebrities, we all have fond memories of Jean d’Ormesson, Henri Salvador, Laurent Gerra,
Julien Clerc and Arielle Dombasle; as for the others, apart from Michael Jackson and Celine Dion, of course,
we remember our incredible laughter-filled sessions with Shahrukh Khan and Jackie Chan.
What are your favourite places in this legendary district – the Grands Boulevards?
V.B.: The exit of the Musée Grévin is located in one of the magnificent covered passages of Paris – the Passage Jouffroy, where you must stop at Pain d’épices to browse reproductions of old toys and a complete range
of dollhouse furniture, and admire the window display of Segas, the collector and seller of old walking sticks.
Fans of cross-stitch embroidery will enjoy a stop at Bonheur des Dames in the Passage Verdeau. Those with
a sweet tooth can walk on a little further to Rue du Faubourg Montmartre to taste the delicious confectionery
at La Mère de famille.

For culture fans, there is the Théâtre des Variétés right across from the Musée Grévin and the cinema Le Grand
Rex, another landmark of the district. Some of our guests stay at the Hôtel Pulitzer Opéra when they come
to Paris. And finally, the Café Grévin is a great way to wind up a visit to the museum!
What projects are currently on at the museum, and which new celebrity waxworks can we expect to see in the
near future?
V.B.: Under the guidance of Béatrice de Reyniès, the president of the museum, a Musée Grévin is to open in
Montreal in March 2013, and another in Prague by 2014. The choice of celebrity waxworks to be displayed
there will be made by each country.
In Paris, we will shortly be hosting Penelope Cruz and Nolwenn Leroy, then Omar Sy, Teddy Riner and Anne
Roumanoff, plus Scrat the squirrel from Ice Age, Lambert Wilson and Nicolas Cage.
So there’s lots happening, and an exciting future in store for this more-than-centenary Paris monument!
