ame any type of surgery, on any part of the body,
and chances are that an aria health surgeon can
do that operation robotically.
in robotic surgery, the surgeon inserts straw-like “ports”
eight millimeters in diameter through tiny incisions in the
patient’s body. the surgeon then passes tiny instruments
through these ports into the surgical area, using a remote
control console to manipulate the instruments and view
the operative field. Aria Health surgeons use the da Vinci
Si Surgical System, the latest generation of this technology.
the advantages for patients? reduced trauma, less blood
loss, less pain, and faster recovery. And surgeons who
perform robotic procedures say the high-definition, threedimensional screen they use to visualize the operative field
allows them to see small structures within the body more
clearly and operate with more precision, making for a safer
and in many cases speedier operation.
think of robotic surgery as the next generation after
laparoscopic surgery. Also called “keyhole” or “band aid”
surgery, laparoscopic surgery was revolutionary when it
entered widespread use for gynecologic surgeries in the
1960s. this approach let surgeons perform operations
through incisions less than a centimeter across. Patients
healed more quickly, with less scarring.
not every type of surgery can be performed with traditional
laparoscopy, in part because the surgeon has to manipulate
tiny instruments inside the body with long “sticks,” limiting
the range of hand motions he or she can use. But the
remote-controlled surgical robot allows for the “wristed”
motion that’s lost with the older type of surgery.

esophageal surgery to be discharged
home the day after their procedure.
Luca Giordano, MD, FACS, Head of Aria's Division of Minimally Invasive Surgery
“it allows a better performance of
minimally invasive surgery, with all
the advantages of the minimally
invasive approach, to a larger number
of patients,” says Luca Giordano,
MD, FACS, Head of Aria’s Division
of Minimally invasive Surgery and
Director of Bariatric Surgery. “robotic
surgery increases precision, and
allows patients to have a shorter
hospital stay with decreased pain and
possibly fewer complications.”
During his career, Dr. Giordano
has performed more than 2,000
minimally invasive surgeries. He
performs each of the three weight
loss operations available to patients
at Aria — adjustable gastric banding,
the gastric sleeve, and gastric
bypass—using the robotic approach
(see page 12 for more information

on Aria Health’s bariatric surgery
program).
Dr. Giordano also performs a
wide variety of other procedures
robotically, including esophageal,
colon and stomach surgery; removal
of the pancreas, spleen, adrenal
glands, gallbladder, and appendix;
surgery to treat digestive problems
such as gastroesophageal reflux
disease and hiatal hernia; and repair
of inguinal hernias and ventral
hernias.
in addition, Dr. Giordano is among
very few surgeons in the world to
perform robotic-assisted, single
incision laparoscopic surgery. this
approach allows many patients who
undergo complex operations like colon
resection, gastric resections, and

“the goal now across medicine and
across specialties is to do as much
of your surgery as you can minimally
invasively, and what that translates
to is doing things that are less
disruptive to the body,” says Gregory
Bolton, Sr., MD, Chairman of the
Department of Gynecology at Aria.
“All of these things lend themselves
to an improvement with recovery,
because there’s less pain, there’s less
chance of infection, there’s much less
need for blood transfusions because
your bleeding is less, so your overall
recovery time is vastly improved and
much shorter.”
For example, Dr. Bolton points out,
performing a traditional hysterectomy
requires a six- to eight-inch incision,
with recovery taking anywhere from
six to eight weeks. recovery time
after a robotic hysterectomy is two
to three weeks, and patients typically
leave the hospital after just one night
in the hospital. “Some of my patients

even go home the same day, which
was previously unheard of,” he says.
With the surgical robot, Dr. Bolton
says, he is now able to perform more
difficult surgeries in a minimally
invasive way. For example, patients
who have a great deal of scar tissue
from previous surgeries, or patients
who want to have fibroids removed
while keeping their uterus intact, can
now have the operation robotically.
“For me it offers my patients a much
less invasive way of doing whatever
surgery they need,” he says.
Other procedures Dr. Bolton performs
robotically include repairs of pelvic
organ prolapse and surgery to treat
urinary incontinence.
Aria Health patients can also
benefit from robotic-assisted
urological surgery, including radical
prostatectomy, partial or complete
kidney removal, and removal of
blockages in the urinary system. “the
inclusion of robotic-assisted surgery
allows us to provide all of the services
that are generally only found at larger
institutions in new York and Boston,”
says Milton Coll, MD, Chief of Aria’s
Division of Urology. “Area physicians
and patients can now rest assured
that we have the same caliber of
program within our own community.”
Patients who need surgery on the
thyroid or parathyroid glands but
want to avoid a highly visible scar
on the front of the neck can also
opt for a robotic procedure. the
robotic approach sidesteps the need
for a neck incision by allowing the
surgeon to work through an incision
in the armpit instead. not only does
this make for a better cosmetic
result, notes Aria surgical oncologist
robert Golub, MD, the much clearer
view of the visual field gained with
robotic surgery makes for much
more precision—and hence a safer
operation. “the robot allows for really

beautiful imaging of all these very
small structures,” Dr. Golub explains.
Dr. Golub, who trains other physicians
from around the world to perform
robotic thyroid and parathyroid
surgery, also treats other types of
thyroid problems using the robotic
approach, such as goiter and thyroid
nodules.
thoracic surgeon richard Chang, MD,
a Philadelphia Magazine “top Doc”
for 2011, is a leader in robotic thoracic
surgery, or operations involving the
chest area. this is a huge advantage
for patients, because Dr. Chang
is able to perform diagnostic and
surgical procedures via tiny incisions,
with no need to spread the ribs
and disrupt the chest anatomy. this
means patients can heal much more
quickly, and have a far lower risk of
complications such as sternal wound
infection and chest wall instability.
Aria is thinking forward
by expanding its
robotic-assisted surgical
procedures and specialties.
Dr. Brodsky
robotic surgery also allows for more
aggressive treatment of lung cancers,
and for treating patients who may not
have been candidates for traditional
open chest surgery, which is much
more stressful for the body. Dr. Chang
has expertise in lung surgery, videoassisted thoracic surgery, esophageal
surgery, and tracheal surgery, as well
as in performing esophageal and
tracheal-bronchial stenting to keep
these vital airways open. He is also
skilled at video mediastinoscopy and
laser bronchoscopy, two procedures
that allow the surgeon to carefully
view the inside of the chest and
airways and take biopsies of tissue as
needed.
Aria Health surgeons are leading the
way in applying the robotic-assisted
technique to other fields of surgery.
“Aria is thinking forward by
expanding its robotic-assisted
surgical procedures and specialties,”
says Jeffrey t. Brodsky, MD, Director
of Surgical Oncology. Dr. Brodsky
specializes in esophageal and gastric
surgery, hepatobiliary surgery,
pancreatic surgery and colorectal
surgery. “My goal is to apply this to
multiple types of cancer,” he says.
“With the robotic approach you have
better instruments, you have better
visualization and magnification,”
Dr. Brodsky adds. “there’s just no
way you’re not going to do a better
operation robotically.”

A
t aria health-Bucks county, patients in need of
orthopedic care will find comprehensive, leadingedge surgical and non-surgical treatment in a
comfortable, caring setting.
“We offer university-level orthopedic intervention, but
in a comfortable home-like environment,” says George
Stollsteimer, MD, an orthopedic surgeon specializing in
sports medicine and orthopedic surgery. “We’re very
attentive to the fact that our Bucks County patients are
our neighbors. Our families are here, our children go to
school here, our lives are here, and i think that makes a
difference.”
Dr. Stollsteimer specializes in shoulder and knee surgery,
including treatment of rotator cuff tears, knee instability,
meniscus cartilage tears, and knee ligament tears. He’s
part of a team that has all the bases covered. “We can
handle pretty much any orthopedic need, from fractures
to joint replacement to high-level sports medicine cases to
advanced spinal surgery,” he explains.
6
Winter 2012
And even though the care patients receive is equal to that
offered at university-level centers, you’ll be treated with
a much more personalized approach, says Christopher
Aland, MD, who also specializes in arthroscopic treatment
of shoulder and knee injuries. “You’re not going to go
in and get triaged to someone else,” he says. “it’s highly
individualized care.”
Only about 10 percent of patients seeking orthopedic
care at Aria Health-Bucks County will require surgery.
Most can be taken care of effectively with medical
treatment, injections, and physical therapy. One focus
of the program, Dr. Aland notes, is to treat patients with
arthritis aggressively, and non-surgically, with the goal of
helping them to put off the need for joint replacement—or
even make this kind of surgery unnecessary. “Our goal is to
restore function and decrease pain,” he added.
Patients who do need hip or knee replacement can
be confident of receiving excellent care that begins
well before the surgery, and getting plenty of support

through the recovery process. Aria offers pre-surgery
educational sessions on joint replacement and postoperative rehabilitation to patients and their families.
Joint replacement coordinators, nurses specially trained
in orthopedics, occupational therapists, and physical
therapists conduct the classes, which include information
on pre- and post-operative exercises, post-operative pain
control, and much more.
"Aria Health's pre-surgery education program and our
excellent nursing and physical therapy teams ensure that
patients, and their families, are well prepared for joint
replacement surgery and the rehabilitation process,"
says John Avallone, DO, who specializes in joint
replacement surgery.
“Many hospitals do joint replacement, but not all hospitals
have programs such as this. the patients find it very
helpful,” adds John Petolillo, Jr., DO, a board-certified
orthopedic surgeon at Aria Health who performs total
knee and hip replacements and arthroscopic knee and
shoulder surgery, as well as general orthopedic surgery.
“By the time they actually come in for surgery, they’ve had
the majority of their questions answered, and they have a
good idea of what to expect.”
Aria spine surgeon Stephen Cairone, DO, specializes
in operative treatment of the spine, both degenerative
and traumatic. Surgeries he performs include treatment
of fractures, herniated disc repair, spinal fusions, and
kyphoplasty for treating compression fractures. Dr. Cairone
also performs general orthopedics, including arthroscopy
and sports medicine. in addition, he is one of several Aria
orthopedists who work with local sports teams, directing
injury prevention and risk management for the Council
rock United Youth Soccer association.
non-surgical orthopedic specialist Jason torrente, DO,
spends many of his fall days treating orthopedic injuries on
the sidelines of Council rock north and Pennsbury High
School football games. Dr. torrente also helps out during
wrestling tournaments and other major athletic events.
We offer comprehensive orthopedic
care to help our patients return to
normal activity as quickly, and safely,
as possible.
Dr. Lowe
One unique aspect of the orthopedic program, Dr. torrente
says, is the wide variety of specialties represented by
the physician team. “everyone has their niche thing that
they like to do, so it’s good to have that diversity, i think
it’s a plus.”

"We offer comprehensive orthopedic care to help our
patients return to normal activity as quickly, and safely
as possible," says general orthopedist Stephen Lowe, MD.
"And our team of specialists work closely together to
identify patients' needs and the proper treatments."
Another special feature of Aria Health-Bucks County is the
fact that it’s a teaching hospital, says Bradley Fink, DO, an
attending orthopedic surgeon at Aria and professor at the
Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. this means
that around the clock, there is a resident on-site and ready
to treat patients—a major plus for patients recuperating
from total joint replacement or hip fracture repair. “that’s
good to have,” Dr. Fink says. “there’s some direct, handson care through the residents, which you really don’t have
in other non-teaching hospitals.”

John McPhilemy, DO, directs the orthopedic residency
training program based at Aria Health-Bucks County,
and performs general orthopedic surgery, hip and knee
replacements, and arthroscopic surgery. He’s also the
physician for another local team—the Philadelphia 76ers.
“i also do a lot of work with middle-aged and older
people,” he says. “i enjoy taking care of all age groups.”
Dr. McPhilemy sees Aria Health as a special mix of toplevel treatment and personalized care. “What’s unique
about it is they’re very up-to-date with nursing care,
very professional, and yet it has the feel of an old-time
community hospital, and that’s something that’s getting
increasingly difficult to find in today’s world. that’s what i
like most about it.”
in addition to the orthopedic team at the Bucks County
hospital campus, Aria also offers comprehensive orthopedic
services from sports medicine to joint replacement at its
torresdale and Frankford campuses in northeast Philadelphia.

PRECISE TREATMENT
FOR ARRHYTHMIAS
A
ria is the first hospital on the east coast to utilize
epoch, the latest generation of the Stereotaxis
magnetic navigation System.
A growing number of abnormal heart rhythm disorders
are treatable with heart catheterization procedures,
thanks to the technological advances now available to
patients at Aria Health.
the epoch system, housed at Aria's torresdale Campus,
allows cardiologists to perform robotic-driven catheter
ablation procedures to treat many types of arrhythmias or
heart rhythm disorders.
the system offers major advantages over conventional
treatment methods, says Scott Spielman, MD, Director
of Aria’s electrophysiology Laboratory. While standard
catheters used for ablation are fairly stiff, making them
difficult to guide and raising the risk of perforating heart
tissue, Stereotaxis employs a soft, floppy catheter.
the electrophysiologist, a heart rhythm disorder
specialist, guides the catheter through the heart
using a remote-control console, which directs
magnets to pull the tip of the catheter along,
millimeter by millimeter. this allows for
greater precision in diagnosing and
treating abnormal heart rhythms,
Dr. Spielman points out, and
studies have shown that procedures can be accomplished
in a shorter time period with greater safety. “the
Stereotaxis system allows you to tackle much more
complex arrhythmias,” he adds, noting that the technology
also makes it easier for the cardiologist to treat areas
of the heart that are difficult to reach with a standard
catheter.
“Stereotaxis allows one to get a catheter tip to sites
inside the complex internal anatomy with less force, more
precision, and less risk of causing perforation injury to
structures that one doesn’t want to ablate or hurt, and
achieve a better outcome with less procedure time and
less radiation exposure,” says roger Marinchak, MD, an
electrophysiologist at Aria Health.

natural “pacemakers,” specialized cells located within
the heart, maintain normal heart rhythms. But any
other cell within the heart can step in and start leading
the beat, causing chaotic rhythms that can be lifethreatening.
Aria Health electrophysiologists (from left to right) Roger A.
Marinchak, MD, FACC; Scott Spielman, MD, FACC; and Bradley
Bacik, DO, FACC, are the first on the East Coast to utilize
Epoch, the latest generation of the Stereotaxis Magnetic
Navigation System, to perform robotic ablation of heart
arrhythmias.
the new system slashes patients’ radiation exposure
by two-thirds, and is effective for treating ventricular
arrhythmias as well as other types of abnormal heart
rhythms. And even though the technology is based on
magnets, points out Aria electrophysiologist Bradley
Bacik, DO, patients with metal in their bodies—for
example screws or plates—can be treated safely. “talk to
your doctor,” he says. “even if you have a pacemaker or a
defibrillator, you can be a candidate for Stereotaxis.”
“the advent of Stereotaxis has given us the ability
to go anywhere we want in the heart with a catheter
with considerable precision and safety,” Dr. Bacik says.
Often patients may require more than one ablation
treatment, he notes; with Stereotaxis, it is possible for the
electrophysiologist to go back and precisely identify
additional areas that must be ablated,
sharply improving the effectiveness of the
procedure.
As the United States population ages, the
number of people with atrial fibrillation
(AF) will grow, Dr. Bacik notes. While
AF is a chronic condition that cannot be
cured, he adds, ablation treatment can
substantially reduce symptoms and improve
a person’s quality of life. “We can make an
amazing impact on this,” he says.
Abnormal heart rhythms, or arrhythmias, are classified
by whether they affect the upper chambers of the
heart (atrials), or the lower chambers (ventricles). Atrial
fibrillation (AF) is the most common type of serious
arrhythmia, and occurs when the atria contract very
quickly and in an irregular fashion. While AF itself
usually is not life threatening, it can increase the risk of
stroke and heart failure. in addition, it often causes very
annoying and disabling symptoms such as palpitations
(internal awareness of abnormal heart action), fatigue,
reduced exercise tolerance, shortness of breath, chest
pain, and diminished quality of life.
For decades, drug therapy was the mainstay of
arrhythmia treatment, in the form of medications
that would slow the heart rate, and drugs that
would normalize rhythm, explains Aria Health
electrophysiologist Bradley Bacik, DO. But these drugs
leave much to be desired, he adds; at best they are
about 60 percent effective in treating AF, and they can
have serious side effects.
Surgeons first began using radiofrequency energy to
destroy heart tissue responsible for cardiac arrhythmias
in 1986, according to Dr. Bacik. Most early treatments
targeted arrhythmias originating from the right side
of the heart, which was more easily accessible to
surgeons. Catheters threaded through a vein in the leg
or arm up to the heart were employed wipe out the
aberrant heart tissue.
Doctors began investigating ablation to treat AF,
which originates from the harder-to-reach left side of
the heart, in 2000. Use of ablation for AF had become
relatively widespread by 2006. And since
then, Dr. Bacik says, the technology has
gotten better and better. Ablation now has
a 65 percent success rate in suppressing
AF with a single procedure, while adding
medications can improve effectiveness by
another 15 to 20 percent. And the ability
that the Stereotaxis Magnetic navigation
System offers to return after one procedure
and precisely target additional areas for
treatment means effectiveness increases
even further with subsequent treatment,
Dr. Bacik said.

BARIATRIC
SURGERY SUCCESS
P
eople who undergo weight-loss surgery need
plenty of support, before and after the procedure,
and aria health’s bariatric surgery program offers
patients all the help they need to succeed.
Bariatric surgical procedures help morbidly obese
patients who have been unable to lose weight by any
other means to slim down. According to national
institutes of Health (niH) guidelines, it’s an option for
men and women with a body mass index (BMi) of 40 or
greater, or 35 or above if they have obesity-related health
problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or sleep
apnea. (See sidebar for more information on BMi)
“in order to have this surgery, people are roughly 100
pounds overweight,” says elizabeth renza-Stingone,
MD, FACS, one of two fellowship-trained surgeons who
perform weight loss operations at Aria.
Aria Health offers three types of bariatric surgery:
adjustable gastric banding, the gastric sleeve, and gastric
bypass. (See sidebar for more details.) Patients have the
option of choosing minimally invasive robotic surgery
for any of these procedures. this means the operation is
performed via small incisions, with a clear video image
of interior body structures that lets the surgeon move
tiny robotic surgical tools with great precision. robotic
or standard laparoscopic bariatric surgery reduces the
amount of time patients need to stay in the hospital,
decreases post-operative pain, and may result in fewer
complications too, says Luca Giordano, MD, FACS,
Director of Minimally invasive Surgery and Bariatric
Surgery at Aria.
research has shown that for patients to appreciate
the full benefit of bariatric surgery, they must be
psychologically prepared, and should have adopted
healthy eating and exercise habits well before they have
the operation. Aria’s multidisciplinary team addresses all
of these aspects of surgical preparation and follow-up,
and more.
“We have to put the accent on the fact that this is not just
surgery,” Dr. Giordano says. “it’s all of those things.”
While bariatric surgery is usually covered by insurance,
patients may need to jump through a few hoops to
get certified, and Aria Health will help. “insurance
clearance is a big part of this, and there are always lots
of hurdles,” Dr. renza-Stingone says. “Our staff is always
helpful with precertification and getting patients ready
for the program.”
A full-time registered dietitian on staff counsels patients
on nutrition for six months before they have the
operation. All the patients coming to the Center will see
a psychologist that will help them to address particular
issues related to obesity.
“Our dedicated staff psychologist sees the patients
for preoperative assessments, as well as postoperative
counseling,” Dr. renza-Stingone explains. “She leads the
support groups, and she’s very involved with the patients.
i think that having this kind of psychological support
when people are going through this big transition in their
lives is something that is unique to our program.”
During the six-month prep period, patients will also
receive a complimentary physiological evaluation and
full access to the Wellness Centers available at each Aria
hospital campus, also free of charge. After the surgery,
once a patient is cleared for exercise, he or she can
continue to use Aria’s Wellness Centers free for another
three months. “that’s a really nice part of the program,”
Dr. renza-Stingone says.

What’s Bmi?
BMi, or body mass index, is a measure of weight in
relation to height used to gauge whether a person is
at a healthy weight. normal-weight people have BMis
between 20 and 25, while those with a BMi of 25 to 30
are considered to be overweight. BMis greater than 30
indicate obesity. A person with a BMi above 40 is
morbidly obese.

in this procedure, an FDA-approved device is surgically
placed around the stomach, so it can’t hold as much
food and you feel full more quickly.
gastric sleeve:
this involves removing a large portion of the stomach,
leaving a smaller tube- or “sleeve”-shaped organ
behind. this procedure does not interfere with your

Planned Emergency Department Expansion
at Aria Health-Frankford
Rendering of Planned Expansion at Aria Health - Torresdale
emergencY cAre renovAtionS
EXPAND & STREAMLINE
M
ajor renovations now
underway will substantially expand
emergency department services
at aria health’s Frankford and
torresdale hospital campuses.
Both projects will also streamline
patient evaluation and treatment,
helping to meet both minor and
major emergency care needs
effectively and efficiently.
“We knew we had to expand our
emergency room to be able to handle
the volume that’s coming through the
doors,” says John Quinn, executive
Director of Aria Health-Frankford.
right now, he pointed out, the
emergency Department—the only one
in the Lower northeast Philadelphia
area—currently has 17 beds. the $12.1
million renovation will double capacity
to 34 beds, while adding another
8,000 square feet of space enables
it to serve 60,000 patients annually.
Construction is expected to be
complete by spring 2013.
Construction costs for the torresdale
project, which will expand the
emergency department from 30 to
42 beds, are estimated at $37 million.
the renovations are expected to be
complete in March 2014.
Both the Frankford and torresdale
campus projects will be built upon
existing emergency Department sites,
but with some key layout changes.
For example, both new emergency
Departments will have two separate
entrances, one for walk-in patients
and one for patients who arrive
by ambulance. “this will allow for
enhanced triaging and the ability to
rapidly address the unique needs of
all patients,” explains Christine Winn,
FACHe, the executive Director of Aria
Health-torresdale.
torresdale will also add a separate
waiting area for patients and their
families awaiting test results, a
Ct scanner, and two traditional
radiology rooms.
Both renovations will include
upgrades to other hospital
departments. torresdale’s renovation
will incorporate a revamping of its
Outpatient Center. “We want to
optimize patient access while also
highlighting our unique programs,
especially in the surgical area,”
Winn says.
Physicians, nurses and others have
made suggestions on how to increase
patient comfort and improve the
room layout—for example, moving
sinks and televisions for optimal
room use.
in Bucks County, Aria Health is
also continuing to move through
the zoning process for future
development of 41 acres of land
in Lower Makefield township.
“expansion of Aria’s health care
services will help meet the growing
needs of the Bucks County patient
population,” says Aria’s Chief
Operating Officer ronald Kumor.
The mock Emergency Department room
(pictured here) was developed with input
from ED staff and will be incorporated into
the Emergency Department design of the
$12.1 million renovation project.
Most importantly, both emergency
Departments will remain open and
fully operational as the renovations
progress. “We’ve been very careful
in terms of our phasing plan so we
won’t disrupt our current flow,”
says Winn.
Aria Health team members also have
the unique opportunity to provide
input on how the renovations are
done. “in order to better engage
the staff, we actually built a mock
emergency room here at our
Frankford Campus,” Quinn notes.

FrankFord/
Last October, an Aria Health School
of nursing teacher and her student
decided to investigate health care
needs in the neighborhood around
Aria Health’s Frankford Campus.
Kelly Flanigan, MSn, rn, a nursing
instructor, and her colleague Jenika
Miles found that many people were
interested in the preventive health
services offered at Aria Health
-Frankford. they also learned that
high blood pressure and diabetes
were primary health concerns for
neighborhood residents.
“We have been very appreciative
of the opportunity to expand our
presence in the many neighborhoods
we serve,” says John Quinn, executive
Director of Aria Health – Frankford,
“it is rewarding to see our outreach
efforts impact community need.”
Flanigan and Miles first headed to
Bridesburg’s St. Anne’s Senior Center,
visiting twice a month to talk about
health issues and get the word
out about the preventive services
available at the Frankford Campus.
At their first health fair, more than
100 people attended. “For your first
venture into a health fair, if you know
the community of senior centers, it’s a
very, very good sign that we had 100
people,” says Barbara Jo Hartzell, the
Director of St. Anne’s.
A major challenge, according to
Hartzell, has been to connect with
the senior center’s Polish-speaking

community. the Aria Health team
made sure to have several Polish
speakers on hand at health fairs, as
well as during health presentations,
which St. Anne’s now offers monthly.
“to know that Aria sees that as an
important factor just like we do is
very helpful,” she says.
“As you see we’ve been quite busy,”
she added. “it’s been a good year,
getting a lot of people aware in the
local community of what we provide
them, and then actually being able to
go out and do something for them
has been well received and beneficial
on our part too.”
"People saw what we did at St.
Anne’s, and we kind of fanned out
from there, we’re out all over the
place now," says Flanigan.
One major sign that outreach efforts
are making a difference in the lives of
the Frankford community, says Quinn,
is a related increase in utilization
of preventive health and wellness
services at Aria Health-Frankford.
And from there, Aria HealthFrankford’s community outreach
program mushroomed.
Since those small beginnings Aria
Health-Frankford’s community
outreach team, led by campus Clinical
Director Karen Sobczak, MSn, rn,
has worked with students at John
Marshall elementary School, St.
Martin’s elementary School, and
Frankford High School, providing
information on health and also
doing presentations on careers in
health care. they’ve also held some
back-to-school nights for parents,
answering questions on health issues
and helping them get connected to
primary care physicians.
the team has also organized fairs
at three local churches: St. Martin
of tours, St. Joachim, and the
Campbell AMe Church. their work
with St. Anne’s continues, and they
are collaborating with the northeast
Senior Center as well.
And last but not least, Aria has held a
dozen health fairs for local employers.
“We’re excited about our second year
and expanding,” Sobczak says.

At Aria Health-torresdale, a community needs survey
revealed that residents could benefit from education

is trying to develop programs and outreach opportunities
that would allow us to provide community education
specific to these health concerns,” says Christine Winn,

Community outreach efforts are also flourishing at Aria
Health-Bucks County as the hospital’s sexual assault
nurse examiners have partnered with the Liz Claiborne
Foundation to conduct education at local schools on teen
dating and violence. the team is hoping to soon begin
working with parent-teacher organizations, says Ann Marie
reid, rn, BSn, Cen, PHrn, Clinical Director. “Our work
has demonstrated that parents are in need of broader
education around the potential for teen dating and
violence and what their children are experiencing.”
the Domestic Violence task Force based at Aria HealthBucks County has also been working with a local women’s
shelter, holding employee drives to collect toiletries,
cleaning supplies and other small items for the shelter’s
residents, reid adds. the task Force is also planning to
help the shelter clean and restock its food pantry.
in addition, “ambassadors” from Aria Health-Bucks
County’s community outreach group have been working
with local senior centers, hosting senior lectures, offering
blood pressure screenings, and spreading the word about
the hospital’s many programs and services.
Harry Emmerich, DO, Aria Health-Bucks County Campus
Chief and Emergency Department Director, discusses
Emergency Medicine at a recent meeting of the hospital's
monthly "Senior Social" breakfast attended by nearly 100
local senior citizens.
“We look forward to continuing to tailor future
community benefit programs to the unique health needs
of Bucks County,” says reid.

TEAMING UP

T
hanks to advances in how lung cancer is diagnosed
and treated, the outlook for patients with the
disease is much better than it was even a few
years ago.
And at Aria Health, lung cancer patients have access
to leading-edge care from a multidisciplinary team of
cancer specialists, including thoracic surgeon richard
Chang, MD, one of the region’s leading experts on robotic
lung surgery.
Dr. Chang, named a Philadelphia Magazine “top Doc”
for 2011, performs nearly all of his thoracic surgeries
(operations on the chest area) robotically. He manipulates
tiny tools within the patient’s body via a “remote control”
console, while observing the surgical area on a highdefinition video screen. this allows for much more precise
visualization of organs and tissues than is possible with
standard surgery.
With standard open thoracic surgery, the surgeon must
make a large incision down the middle of the chest,
“cracking the ribs” to access the lungs. But with the
robotic technique, only a few tiny incisions are necessary.
“We don’t interrupt the stability of the chest with the
robotic approach, as opposed to the standard approach
where you actually disrupt the mechanics of the chest
wall,” Dr. Chang explains.
Patients can take up to three months to recover from open
chest surgery, he adds. But healing and recovery take just
a few weeks with robotic surgery. And patients who need
chemotherapy after surgery can start much sooner, thanks
to the quicker recovery period.
Lung cancer may be treated surgically, with radiation,
with chemotherapy, or with various combinations of
these approaches. identifying the best therapy for an

Massage Cupping™ body work is based on the common
practice of Chinese cupping therapy. the incredible results
that this simple treatment produces have truly impressed
those who experience its subtle power. By creating suction
and negative pressure, Massage Cupping™ therapy is used
to soften tight muscles and tone attachments, loosen
adhesions and lift connective tissue, bring hydration
and blood flow to body tissues, and drain excess fluids
and toxins by opening lymphatic pathways. Massage
Cupping™ therapy is beneficial for many conditions such
as high blood pressure, anxiety, fatigue, chronic headache,

ARIA HEALTH
A CARING BUCKS COUNTY NEIGHBOR
As part of the Bucks County community, Aria takes pride in knowing that we are here to
care for our neighbors. We have been an integral part of the families, businesses and visitors
in Bucks County since 1999. Today, we continue to fulfill our organizational mission by
expanding our clinical services, technology, and facilities for our patients and guests.
Aria’s professional caregivers not only work here, but many of them live here, grew up here,
and want their children to be raised here. Bucks County has a rich history, and like any great
community, it’s filled with people who truly care for each other. At Aria, our job is to provide
the latest healthcare services to our Bucks County neighbors – and that makes us feel good.
