Junior shot puts to nationals
In a dramatic, come-from-behind victory, junior Alexis Daniels stood in
the number one spot on the podium in the girls’ shot put at the New York
State High School Championships at Cornell University in March.
Alexis, who came into the championship seeded second going into her
sixth and final throw. Confidently stepping into the throwing circle in
front of a standing room only crowd, she flawlessly executed the spin
technique she worked to master under the tutelage of assistant coach
Jared Ketchuk, launching the 8.8 pound ball a whopping 45 feet 6 and a
half inches to win the event by two and a half inches. Alexis becomes the
first Binghamton athlete to win a state title in indoor track and field in the
seven years that the district has fielded a team.
The following week, competing in the New Balance Indoor National
Championships in New York City, Alexis again upended the form chart.
Not even seeded in the top ten, she threw 48 feet 8 and a quarter inches,
a personal best by over three feet, to take second place. This throw
also broke the NYS junior record set in 2009 by Melissa Kurzdorfer of
Lancaster.
Head coach David Cody said, “Alexis has been one of the top throwers
in Section IV since she was a freshman, but her progress this season
has certainly exceeded anyone’s expectations. A great deal of credit for Alexis’s progress also has to go to Jared
Ketchuk. This is his first season as a full time member of our indoor staff, and his knowledge of the throwing events,
along with the bond that he and Alexis have formed, is producing terrific results. If Alexis maintains her current focus
and commitment, and with Jared’s guidance, the state record of 50 feet 6 inches seems like a reasonable goal for her
senior year.”
Congratulations!
Student wins national scholarship
E
liza J. Alston has been selected as the winner of a National
Achievement® $2500 Scholarship. The National Achievement
Scholarship Program is conducted by National Merit Scholarship
Corporation (NMSC), and is underwritten by NMSC.
Recipients of this award are chosen from finalists who meet the
specified criteria of the sponsoring corporations, foundations, or
other business organizations underwriting their awards. In the 2015
competition, 25 organizations supported National Achievement
Scholarships. All students who attained finalist standing in this
academic competition were considered for one of the National
Achievement $2500 Scholarships.
More than 160,000 students who took the 2013 PSAT/NMSQ®
entered the 2015 National Merit® Scholarship Program and also
requested consideration in the National Achievement Program,
in which only black Americans participate. Both competitions are
conducted by NMSC. Last fall, some 1,600 participants in the
National Achievement Program were named semifinalists. Only
Principal Roxie Oberg with Eliza.
these semifinalists continued in the Achievement Scholarship
competition, and approximately 1,300 of them fulfilled requirements necessary to become finalists. All winners of more
than 800 National Achievement Scholarships, worth about $2.5 million, are chosen from the group of outstanding
finalists. n

Student receives national award
T
he National 4-H Council has named Binghamton High
School student and CITIZEN U Teen Leader Nosa
Akol recipient of the 2015 4-H Youth in Action Award,
the organization’s highest honor for a 4-H’er. Nosa was
selected out of more than 80 candidates nationwide
because of her proven commitment to overcoming personal
challenges, empowering her peers and driving positive
change in her community.
In addition to receiving a $10,000 scholarship, Nosa will
be honored at National 4-H Council’s sixth annual Legacy
Awards on April 23 in Washington, D.C. where hundreds
of dignitaries, community leaders, philanthropists and
entertainers will gather to recognize her and celebrate the
impact of 4-H.
Akol has developed and led projects that ranged from a
“Taste the Rainbow” nutrition education program in local
elementary schools to a “Great Pothole Solution Project” to
map and help city leaders remediate the pothole problem
in the City of Binghamton. This spring, Nosa will partner
with fellow New York 4-H’er and National 4-H Council
Board of Trustee member Lazarus Lynch to lead a Hunger
Banquet and Poverty Simulation to educate the community
about childhood hunger and how they can become “hunger
champions” in the fight to end world hunger.
According to Kelly Mabee, Cornell Cooperative Extension
of Broome County educator and CITIZEN U project
coordinator, “I have had the unique opportunity of watching
Nosa grow both personally and professionally, and become a true agent of change. She continues to inspire other
young people by demonstrating how to become effective community change agents. I know that Nosa’s job is just
beginning, and I’m excited to be a part of her journey.”
“We could not be more proud to recognize Nosa as this year’s 4-H Youth in Action Award Winner,” said Jennifer
Sirangelo, president and CEO, National 4-H Council. “She exemplifies the life-changing impact of the 4-H experience,
and represents millions of confident 4-H’ers all over the U.S. who are empowered with the life skills to tackle personal
and community challenges today and to thrive in their careers tomorrow.”
