Prasiolite
A Cool Minty Green for Summer
Katy Lovasco
Prasiolite has been on the market for a
fairly shor t period of time, being
discovered in the 1950’s and hitting the
market in the 70’s. Also known as green
amethyst, prasiolite is part of the large
quartz family.
Structure...
This stone is known for its distinct green
tone acquired by heating amethyst,
therefore getting the nickname “green
amethyst.” The amethyst has to be a
specific form for it to turn this beautiful
mint green tone when heated. This
heat can come from a natural source
due to volcanic activity or can be man
made by heating the stone in a kiln.
Traditional forms of amethyst will turn a
shade of brown or yellow when
heated, producing the stone known as
citrine. This variety of quartz can be
found in Brazil, Poland, and Thunder Bay
in Canada.
The nickname “green amethyst” is
actually a misnomer because the word
amethyst refers to a purple quartz. The
term that should be used is green
quartz, but the actually gem name is
prasiolite. It’s name was coined by the
Greek word "prasos" meaning leek (for
the color similarity) and the extension
"litos" meaning stone.
Properties...
The color green is thought to directly
relate to nature and growth and pale
green is thought to bring peace and
harmony in ones life.
Pendant $120
Multi Stone Bracelet $357
Rectangular Earrings $50
Metaphysically, prasiolite is said to aid in
helping one who has issues expressing
emotion. It is also said to help with
realizing self worth to create a higher
level of confidence. Prasiolite is know
for helping one connect with their
surrounding as well to stay focused.
Physically, prasiolite is said to help with
conditions of the heart. It resonates
with the heart chakra so any ailment of
the heart benefits from this green gem.
Style...
This minty green color has been
trending a lot in the past few years
especially when it comes to weddings. It
has been featured as a great color for
bridesmaids dresses by a number of
designers.
This color works well in a lot of
different color combinations. It has a
very pale green tone that pops when
paired with bright colors like this
seasons hottest tones teal and orange.
When worn with neutrals it can really
dress up an outfit because of its great
sparkle and tone. Prasiolite is also nice
when worn with similar tones in the
green family because it is such a pale
version.
Line....
For our prasiolite collection we carry
numerous styles of pendants in all
different shapes, sizes, and settings.
Because the stone is so simple with
such a great color, the way that it is
faceted can also be unique to each
piece. We also carry a number of rings,
bracelets and earrings in prasiolite.
Carnelian
Hot Orange for Hot Weather
Katy Lovasco
With the hot summer sun fast
approaching, the colors of the season are
getting hotter and louder. Carnelian’s
color is one for the record books.
Carnelian is one of the few stones to
have a color named directly after it.
Other stones to have this honor are
turquoise and amethyst. Carnelian is a
deep orange, rarely found in nature. The
translucent quality of carnelian really
softens the color and makes it vibrant
without being over bearing.
Structure....
Carnelian is a variety of the silica mineral
chalcedony colored by trace iron oxides.
It is mostly mined in India and parts of
the U.S. Sometimes the deposits of
carnelian can settle in the matrix of the
chalcedony and create patterns in the
stones. The more popular patterns
resemble alphabetical letters and others
that are perfect crosses, known as
Jerusalem Stones.
Physically, carnelian is said to aid in
fertility because it resonates with the
fifth and sixth chakra. It is also thought to
help one absorb vitamins, minerals, and
nutrients.
Style...
This bright blood orange carnelian tone
is a major trend in the fashion industry.
Orange has been featured prominently
in this seasons resor t collections,
especially when paired with the other
featured colors in the newsletter
including soft minty green and teal. In
both accessories and garments, this color
is a scene stealer. It’s also been making
appearances in the early fall 2012
collections, paired with grays, taupes,
cobalt, and plum.
Designers such as, Peter Som, Derek
Lam, Charlotte Ronson, Marc Jacobs, and
Yves Saint Laurent have all featured this
leading color in their 2012 collections.
Stars including Fergie, Eva Mendes,
Katherine McPhee, Kristen Bell, Viola
Davis, and many more have all hit the
red carpet in this color trend.

Properties...
The color orange is thought to stimulate
and energize with its warming quality.
Orange is known as the color of fun and
sociability. It is advised to be used in
activity and creative areas.
Metaphysically, the stone carnelian is a
power stone, providing ambition and
drive helpful in the workplace and
beyond. It is a fire element and is said to
give courage. Also, carnelian helps with
finding one’s personal strengths and
powers by stimulating creativity and
curiosity, thus leading to solid life
decisions, especially relating to business.
Recently, Village Silversmith has produced
a large line of carnelian pieces. We have
created numerous little jewelry gems
with both faceted carnelian stones and
cabochon cut stones. The faceted
carnelian allows the variety of the orange
tone to show with the way it catches
sunlight.
This line is mostly comprised of rings and
pendants in the small to medium size
range with really intricate and ornate
settings. Because the stone is so simple
and the color is what stands out, the

Amazonite
Stand Out in this Summer’s Stand Out
Stone
Katy Lovasco
Amazonite has a memorable color named
after the reflective colors of the rain
forest in the Brazilian Amazon River Valley.
Many believe that this stone was originally
mined there, but no deposits have ever
been found in that area. This stone is
sometimes confused with turquoise
because of the similar blue tone.
However amazonite tends to have a
better all over blue tone and a unique
shine.
Some cuts of the stone have a banding
pattern of blue/green and off-white. Gem
quality amazonite has an all over teal color
with flecks of beige and tends to have a
more visible sheen.
Structure...
Amazonite is a gem in the feldspar family.
One of the qualities of the stone that
makes it a art of the feldspar family is the
light play off the surface. The chatoyancy
of the stone is due to the structure of the
layers of mineral inclusions. This light
reflection is more widely recognizable by
amazonite’s feldspar cousin, moonstone.
For many years, mineral experts thought
that the blue color in amazonite was due
to copper erosion. However, it is now
known that the blue color is due to trace
elements of lead.
The best quality
amazonite comes from Colorado but it is
also mined in India and Africa.
Properties…
Amazonite is considered a calming stone.
Light blue is said to be a color for
relaxation and peace. Amazonite is the
stone for the sign of Virgo. This blue tone
tends to be closely related to the summer
months because of its tropical feel.
Metaphysically, amazonite is said to aid in
soothing nerves so that one can be self
confident, sometimes causing it to be
referred to as the “hope” stone. It is also
said to alleviate emotional trauma.
Physically, amazonite is said to help calcium
levels within the body. Therefore, this
stone is beneficial for people with
osteoporosis, calcium deposits or
deficiency, and even tooth decay.
Style…
This bright blue teal is always a popular
summer color but it is even more
abundant this season due to the
popularity of complimentary tones. A
common pairing is with blood orange
tones, such as that of carnelian.
This color has been the standout for many
summer seasons.
The difference this
summer is the integration of the color
into prints.
Many designers such as
BCBG, Calvin Klein, and Ralph Lauren have
embraced this color in their summer
collections, and it is also popular in stores
such as H&M, Guess, and Gap.
Add one of these gems to any print or
solid featuring this tone, or use it to
brighten a neutral outfit. Not only does
amazonite look great with other summer
colors but it also pops against a nice tan
from the summer sun.
Line…
In our stores, we carry amazonite in rings,
pendants, beads, and earrings. Recently,
we have set a lot of small stones in
pendants with intricate settings. Visit any

The Bay State
Collection
Designed by Rebecca Visnick from
Rockport
Katy Lovasco
As the weather heats up, tourists flock to
the coast to take in the surroundings and
soak up some sun on our infamous
Atlantic beaches. The Bay State is a
beloved destination of the U.S., especially
the north shore.
For the busier warmer months, we stock
Village Silversmith with jewelry items to
commemorate the area. We’re proud of
the beauty that surrounds us and
showcasing it in wearable jewelry is one
of the best ways to brag. Adding to the
nautical jewelry that we currently have in
our stores, is a new line that is all about
our great bay state, designed by local
Rockport-er, Rebecca Visnick.
Rebecca was born and raised in
Rockport. Growing up in such a beautiful
area by the sea has inspired her to start a
budding career as a marine biologist. She
has a self proclaimed infatuation with
everything living in and around the
ocean. We discovered her at a local
bearskin neck shop during the bustling
Rockpor t summers while she was
expressing her eye for design and
sketching by creating unique ar tful
nautical henna tattoos.
The collection is thoughtfully designed to
feature the local flora, fauna, and sea life.
Rebecca used specific experiences and
moments during her life in the Bay State
to inspire and shape this collection.
Queen Ann’s Lace Ring $120
Jelly Fish Pendant $165
Squid Pendant $215
One of the most popular items from the
collection is the large jelly fish pendant,
fully equipped with chain tentacles. This
piece is perfect worn on a long chain,
over a great nautical or plain tee.
Rebecca explains that when she was
young she and her father used to take
the family boat over to Thatchers Island, a
famous Rockport landmark that holds
Twin Lighthouses, and study the ‘moon’
jellies. She says, “as soon as we saw a
cluster, we’d bang the boat into neutral
and hang over the edge to take a closer
look at the species.”
Another prominent pendant from the
collection is the cluster of squids. “One
summer night in 2010, I had the chance
to see a school of squid gathering under
the lights near White Wharf, in
Rockport.” Squids are one of the species
that spike Rebecca’s interest from a
biological standpoint as well. “Squid can
be found all over the world and are a
staple in many indigenous species’ diet.
The biomass of squid has passed the
biomass of human, thats just crazy!” This
pendant looks great worn on a short
chain or collar as the statement of an
outfit.
Aside from the ocean dweller pieces,
there is a line of native flowers including
the May flower, a small delicate white
fl o w e r k n o w n f o r b e i n g t h e
Massachusetts state blossom! Also
featured is a bloom of Queen Ann’s
Lace. This flower has tons of tiny white
buds that make up a large white
blossom. This design really stands out
when replicated in silver because of the
three dimensional shape and texture.
The Bay State Collection features sets of
earrings pendants and rings in multiple
designs including, acorns, apple &
strawberry blossoms, lobsters, and many
other unique designs. Find this perfect
summer collection at any of our Village
Silversmith locations.
