Infant Baptisms
The Sacrament of Baptism is celebrated with parent and godparent
catechesis on the first Sunday of the month and Baptisms usually on
the second and fourth Sunday at 2:00pm. Call the Parish Center to
register.
Marriage
Arrangements should be made at least 6 months prior to the intended date of the wedding. Please call the Parish Center to schedule
your date and make an appointment to speak with one of the priests.

Anointing of the Sick
The church encourages all who are ill, about to undergo surgery, or
confined to their home due to illness be to prayed over and anointed
with sacred oil. This can take place at a parish Mass, or in the home
or in the hospital. Please do not wait for the last moment for
yourself or a loved one to be anointed and by all means speak to a
priest for more information or details.

Deus não castiga o pecador, mas ama, perdoa e restaura a vida. Mesmo
que o pecado possa causar conseqüências na vida social e pessoal. O
amor divino, que se manifesta no perdão oferecido por Jesus, é
reconciliador e restaurador; refaz a vida e a existência devolvendo o
equilíbrio interior, através da paz divina que passa a morar no interior da
pessoa. Mas há um dado importante: a divindade de Jesus. Ele não pode
ser considerado apenas como taumaturgo, alguém que faz grandes
milagres. Jesus é Deus e sua divindade é proclamada Não tanto pela cura
do paralítico, mas pelo perdão dos pecados. Diante de Jesus está um
paralítico que acredita na força restauradora do Senhor, mas diante do
Mestre encontra-se alguém que precisa ser curado a partir de dentro,
através do perdão. Ele tem o poder de restaurar a vida a partir de dentro:
perdoa e faz caminhar.

LENTEN REGULATIONS
Abstinence: Catholics over 14 year of age are bound to the
obligations of abstinence. Abstinence is to be observed on
Ash Wednesday and the Fridays of Lent. On days of
abstinence, meat may not be used at all.
Fast: Catholics over 18 and up to the beginning of their
sixtieth year are bound to the obligation of fasting. Ash
Wednesday and Good Friday are the days of fasting. On
these days, only one full meal is allowed. Two other
meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken
according to each one’s needs, but together they should not
equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not
permitted, but liquids, including milk and fruit juices are
allowed.

SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

PONDERAÇÕES DO PE. RON
This coming week we will be celebrating Ash
Wednesday and the beginning of the Lenten
Season. Each year the Church sets aside these
six weeks as a time to be very intentional about
our relationship with God. We have
traditionally focused this season on fasting
(giving things up) and on daily Mass. However
there are so many other ways to observe Lent.
Whatever we choose to do, the purpose is to
heighten our awareness of God in our lives and
to take time to be with Him.
Na próxima semana iremos celebrar a QuartaFeira de Cinzas e o início da Época Quaresmal.
Cada ano a Igreja escolhe estas seis semanas
como um tempo muito intencional sobre nosso
relacionamento com Deus. Tradicionalmente
nós concentrámos esta temporada em jejuar
(desistindo de coisas) e na Missa diária. No
entanto, existem muitas outras formas de
observar a Quaresma. Tudo o que escolhemos
fazer, o objetivo é aumentar a nossa
consciência de Deus em nossas vidas e ter
tempo para estar com Ele.
Our parish will be offering several different
options: Daily Mass of course for those who
can do that; Deacon Dan will be offering prayer
and benediction on Wednesday evenings;
Stations of the Cross on Fridays; and the
Program we began last year entitled Lenten
Longings. We had a very positive response so
again we will be offering it this year.
A nossa Paróquia estará oferecendo várias
opções diferentes: Missa diária é claro para
aqueles que podem fazer isso; o Diácono Dan

This program consists of small groups (8-10
people) meeting throughout the parish on
various days and times of day. The structure
revolves around praying and reflecting on the
upcoming Sunday readings. There are cards at
the doors of the Church where you can sign up
and state your time and day preferences. From
this information we will set the schedule.
Este programa consiste em reunião de pequenos
grupos (8-10 pessoas) em toda a paróquia em
vários dias e differentes horas do dia. A
estrutura gira em torno de rezar e refletir sobre
as leituras do próximo Domingo. Existem
cartões às portas da Igreja onde você pode se

STORM CANCELLATIONS: In the event of a storm,
parents are reminded to follow the program policies
regarding class cancellation. Sunday morning
cancellations will be listed on the three major TV
stations, channels 4, 5 and 7 as well as their affiliate
radio stations. Weekday classes are automatically
cancelled if school has been cancelled for that day. In
the event of a sudden storm, all efforts will be made to
contact each family when possible. However, parents
should always use their good judgment in determining
if it is safe to travel before deciding whether children
should be brought to class.

de uma tempestade, os pais são lembrados a seguir as
regras do programa sobre cancelamento de classe. Os
cancelamentos de Domingo de manhã serão listados nas

tables and/or in the pews and we are encouraged to read
it and to be cognizant of the moral implications of such
a question.

O Clube dos Homens de S. Miguel gostaria de pedir o
seu apoio em alimentar os necessitados na nossa
comunidade. Nós iremos ter uma unidade de apoio a
Despensa de Alimentos em Hudson neste Sábado e
Domingo, dias 18 e 19 de Fevereiro. Os paroquianos
são encorajados a deixar suas doações antes de cada
uma das Missas no caminhão que irá estar estacionado
fora da Igreja na Rua Manning. Mais urgentemente
necessários itens incluem atuns, sopas enlatadas,
conserva de frutas e legumes, cereais, arroz, macarrão,
café, produtos de higiene, incluindo escovas de dentes e
creme dental. Os produtos devem ser fechados e com
datas de expiração de frescura. O Clube dos Homens

The St. Michael’s Men’s Club would like to ask for
your support in feeding the needy in our community.
We will be having a food drive in support of the
Hudson Food Pantry this Saturday and Sunday,
February 18th and 19th. Parishioners are encouraged
to drop off their donations before each of the Masses at
the truck which will be parked outside the Church on
Manning St. Most urgently needed items include tuna
fish, canned soups, canned fruits and vegetables, cereal,
rice, pasta, coffee, toiletries, including toothbrushes and
toothpaste. Items should be unopened and within the
freshness expiration dates. The Men’s Club thanks you
in advance for your generosity.

Lent is a time when Catholics have traditionally fasted
and prayed with the hope that they would have time to
think about the more important things in life. Why not
try this for Lent. In our parish, we will have the
opportunity to gather in small groups of 8-10 people,
once a week for six weeks starting the week of Ash
Wednesday. When we gather, we will read Scripture,
pray and share our faith. This experience will provide

Operation Rice Bowl is a Lenten solidarity program of
Catholic Relief Services. We join in the traditional
practice of Lent and pray as a community, fast in
solidarity with those who are hungry, give concrete
assistance to those most in need, while we learn about
the joys and challenges in the lives of our brothers and
sisters around the world. Please take a rice bowl and
return it during Holy Week.

MESSAGE FROM THE PARISH NURSE
Fevereiro não só é o mês de consciência do coração como também
o MÊS de CONCIÊNCIA da BAIXA VISÃO. A baixa visão pode
afectar a vida inteira de uma pessoa interferindo com a capacidade
de realizar atividades diárias e ela pode ser causada por várias
doenças dos olhos ou lesões.
1. A catarata é a principal causa de cegueira se deixar intratável.
Uma catarata prejudica uma visão quando a lente do olho
torna-se nebulosa, bloqueando a passagem normal de luz para
a retina. Pode desenvolver em um ou ambos os olhos, mas não
pode propagar-se de um olho para o outro. A maioria das
cataratas desenvolvem como parte do processo normal do
envelhecimento. À medida que cresce a catarata, sua visão
pode tornar-se obscura, nebulosa ou turva. Os sintomas de
catarata precoce podem ser diminuídos usando óculos mais
fortes ou lentes de contato, usando luzes brilhantes, usando
óculos escuros anti-reflexo ou usando lentes de aumento. Em
casos avançados a cirurgia para remover a lente nebulosa é o

Not only is February heart awareness month it is also LOW
VISION AWARENESS MONTH. Low Vision can affect a
person’s entire life interfering with the ability to perform daily
activities and it can be caused by various eye diseases or injuries.

Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness if left untreatable.
A cataract impairs a vision when the lens of the eye becomes
cloudy, blocking the normal passage of light to the retina. It
can develop in one or both eyes, but can’t spread from one eye
to the other. Most cataracts develop as part of the normal
aging process. As the cataract grows, your vision may
become blurred, cloudy or foggy. Early cataract symptoms
may be decreased by wearing stronger eyeglasses or contact
lenses, using brighter lights, wearing anti-glare sunglasses or
using magnifying lenses. In advanced cases surgery to
remove the cloudy lens is the most effective treatment.

Glaucoma is often referred to as the sneaky thief of sight. It
refers to a group of diseases that cause damage to the optic
nerve. It is a very serious eye disease and if left untreated can
cause blindness. Many people have glaucoma and are
unaware of it. There are usually no signs or symptoms in the
early stages of this eye disease. An eye doctor can usually
detect signs of glaucoma before nerve damage occurs. Most
cases of the disease can be managed by a physician and
several treatments are available to prevent vision loss.

Refere-se a um grupo de doenças que causam danos no nervo
óptico. É uma doença muito grave e se não for tratada pode
causar a cegueira. Muitas pessoas têm glaucoma e não têm

sintomas nos estágios iniciais desta doença dos olhos. Um
oftalmologista geralmente pode detectar sinais de glaucoma
antes da ocorrência do dano no nervo. A maioria dos casos da
doença podem ser monitorados por um médico e vários
tratamentos estão disponíveis para impedir a perda de visão.
A degeneração macular é a principal causa de cegueira nos
Estados Unidos. Ela geralmente afeta os adultos mais idosos e
causa a perda de visão devido aos danos à retina. É associada
com a idade, mas a pesquisa indica que pode ser hereditária.
Fumar também parece estar diretamente relacionado ao
desenvolvimento da degeneração macular. A perda de visão

ou optometrista pode diagnosticar a presença das doenças acima
através da realização de um exame abrangente dos olhos. Por favor
leve a serio e se você ainda não o fez favor colocar isso em sua

Macular degeneration is the leading cause of blindness in the
United States. It usually affects older adults and causes loss of
vision due to damage to the retina. It is associated with age
but research indicates that it may be hereditary. Smoking also
seems to be directly related to developing macular
degeneration. Vision loss in early cases is so gradual that
most people do not notice it. Pain is not usually experienced
and as the disease progresses, vision may be blurred and
objects may appear distorted. However in some cases, vision
loss can be sudden. Early signs of this disease can usually be
detected before symptoms appear through a dilated retinal
examination. If suspected your eye doctor should conduct
further testing. Although no known cure, the treatments may
delay the progression of the disease and help to improve
vision loss that may have already occurred.
What we all need to be aware of is the necessity of having
ANNUAL VISION EXAMS especially as we get older. Children
are tested in schools each year and with their yearly physicals so it
should be for adults. Most medicals insurances either cover yearly
eye exams or will help to defray the cost. An ophthalmologist or
optometrist can diagnose the presence of the above diseases by
performing a comprehensive eye exam. Please take heart and if
you haven’t done so already put this on your list of things to do in
2012.

7th Sunday in Ordinary Time
It's astonishing to some people that we Catholics will
spend time talking to a priest about our deepest faults.
Confession of sins and being assured of God's
forgiveness is not something that everyone readily
understands. But when we take the time to really
acknowledge our sinfulness, to admit to ourselves, to
God, and to another person (the priest) what we have
done wrong, we can experience the healing that comes
from the confession of our sins.
É surpreendente para algumas pessoas que nós
Católicos gastamos tempo conversando com um padre
sobre os nossos defeitos mais profundos. A confissão
dos pecados e tendo a certeza do perdão de Deus não é
algo que todos compreendem prontamente. Mas quando
nós tomamos tempo para realmente reconhecer a nossa
pecaminosidade, admitir a nós mesmos, a Deus, e a
outra pessoa (o sacerdote) o que fizemos de errado, nós
podemos experimentar a cura que vem da confissão de
nossos pecados.
The Gospel today explicitly reminds us that the
forgiveness of sins is connected to healing. When we
confess our sins, make an act of contrition, and receive
absolution we are healed in that sacrament. The
paralyzed man who was dropped through the roof in
front of Jesus by his friends had his sins forgiven. Much
to the astonishment of the crowd, the paralytic got up,
rolled up his mat, and walked out the door. It was that
easy.
O Evangelho de hoje explicitamente nos lembra que o
perdão dos pecados está ligado à cura. Quando nós
confessamos os nossos pecados, fazemos um acto de
contrição e recebemos a absolvição nós somos curados
nesse sacramento. O homem paralítico, que foi
descartado através do telhado na frente de Jesus por
seus amigos tiveram seus pecados perdoados. Para o
espanto da multidão, o paralítico levantou-se, enrolou o
seu tapete e andou para fora da porta. Foi tão fácil.
Há muitos equívocos sobre o sacramento da penitência.
Uma vez que uma pessoa termina com a barreira do
medo ou vergonha, porém, é realmente tão fácil como
as ações do homem paralítico. Havia muito trabalho da
parte de outras pessoas para levá-lo a frente de Jesus.
Eles tiveram que levá-lo lá, abrir o telhado e jogá-lo

pecados, recebemos uma penitência, rezamos uma
oração de contrição, recebemos a absolvição e, em
seguida, vamos em nosso caminho.
There is a lot of misconception about the sacrament of
penance. Once a person gets over the hurdle of fear or
shame though, it really is as easy as the actions of the
paralyzed man. There was a lot of work on the part of
others to get him in front of Jesus. They had to carry
him there, open the roof, and lower him down. And
before we go to confession, there is some work we have
to do. We have to examine our conscience, and be
willing to be honest with ourselves and with God. But
after that it's easy. We sit down, tell the priest our sins,
receive a penance, pray a prayer of contrition, receive
absolution, and then go on our way.
It is the work of reconciliation that takes much longer,
sometimes even a lifetime. Because sin fractures
relationships, confession really is the easy part. It is
what we do afterwards to heal the wounds that is the
most demanding. It is a good thing Lent begins on
Wednesday!
