Whistler Intellectual Property Conference 2016
Big Sky Ski Resort, Montana, U.S.A.
February 21- February 25, 2016
T
he Whistler Intellectual Property Conference, hosted by PATSKI is an international meeting of patent professionals which
combines a world-class skiing and snowboarding experience with an opportunity to meet, and exchange knowledge and
information with business associates from around the world. This is our 16th year and each year we have returning as well
as new participants who recognize this as a unique educational and business opportunity.
In the past, design patents have perhaps been seen as the poor cousin of utility patents. That changed with the outcome in Apple v.
Samsung where it became clear that, at least in some fields, design patents may provide a higher level of damages for infringement
than utility patents, particularly if obtained in strategically creative ways. The US and Japan having joined the Hague Agreement on
Designs, and with Canada soon to join, that system has reached a critical mass to make it attractive to clients, but still presents
complications given the disparate design filing requirements around the world.
Combining the use of design patent/registration, three-dimensional trademark registrations, and utility models, practitioners can
supplement utility patent protection in valuable ways without major additional costs. The theme of the Patski 2016 business sessions in Big Sky, Montana from February 21 through 25, 2016 therefore will be “The Shape of Things to Come”.
ABOUT THE RESORT
B
ig Sky Ski Resort, located in the Northern Rockies in Montana, boasts “the
biggest skiing in America” with 5800 acres of skiable terrain, a vertical drop of
4350 feet, 300 named runs on four connected mountains, 22 chair lifts and 8
surface lifts and the 6 mile long run from Liberty Bowl to Mountain Mall. From
groomers to gullies, Big Sky has it all. Skiers can access terrain to meet the needs of
all skiing abilities (15% beginner, 24% intermediate and 43% advanced) with powder,
steeps, trees, groomers and a natural fall-line back to the village base. It is no wonder “The Biggest Skiing In America” with all this “big” terrain and a lift capacity of
29,000 skiers per hour is consistently recognized in ski magazines for its short or
non-existent ski lines.
Cross Country Skiing is also available for those that prefer at the Lone Mountain Ranch partway up Lone Peak,
at 6700 feet elevation, and about 10 minutes from the
Summit hotel. There are over 85 kilometers of groomed ski trails on a
nationally ranked course. More information here.
There are many actvities available at Big Sky including snowshoe, snowmobile, snowcoach and zip line tours, ice climbing, and backcountry skiing.
For more information visit here. There is also the Solace Spa and the
Wellness Studio that offers daily classes including yoga, ballet fitness, cardioconditioning, Zumba and more.
A trip to Big Sky would not be complete
without a trip to America’s first National Park,Yellowstone. Here you
will find the world’s largest concentration of geysers including the
most famous of them all, Old Faithful. In the winter it is truly magical
to see steam and water erupt from natural cauldrons in the ice covered
surface. Mountain wildlife is abundant with wolves, foxes, bison and elk.
