Report
from the
Head of
School
Dear Gulliver Friends:
I want to extend a heartfelt congratulations to the entire Gulliver Schools community for helping
us achieve our 2007-2008 fundraising goal! It is inspiring to see so many individuals reaching out
in various ways to help Gulliver maintain its proven record of academic excellence. You can be
sure that every dollar contributed helps enhance the educational environment for our students,
and your generosity demonstrates a commitment to our mission and philosophy.
Gulliver Schools ended the ‘07-‘08 fiscal year with over $1.6 millions dollars raised. We never could
have done this without your support! You are our principal ambassadors, our true champions,
and I personally wish to thank every one who contributed. I also ask that you strongly consider
a donation to the 2008-2009 Annual Fund. Despite the current unique fiscal environment, our
ambitious goal of $300,000 is certainly attainable. Every dollar of your investment will support
the very important work in which we are all engaged, ensuring that every Gulliver student is
prepared to face, with confidence and wisdom, the challenges of the future.
We look to the future with hope and excitement, always mindful of that from which we came,
and we use our rich history as a solid foundation on which to build. For decades, Gulliver has
been a leader and innovator in the field of education. We continue to show progress in every
area of our school, and to pay close attention to the needs of our community. Our ultimate
desire is to build upon our tradition of excellence. We do this by continuously strengthening our
programs, offering our students more diverse opportunities both in and out of the classroom,
and encouraging all members of our community to be active members of society.
Your contribution during the 2007-2008 school year helped us invest in teacher training programs,
retrofit many of our classrooms with state-of-the-art technology, renovate several areas on our
five campuses, improve our athletic fields, and provide financial aid for disadvantaged students,
among many other endeavors. We are confident that in 2008-2009, we will meet and hopefully
exceed our Annual Fund goal.
It has been a rare privilege for me to witness the growth and success of such a fine institution.
I feel very blessed to be a part of this wonderful community, and cannot possibly thank you
enough for remembering Gulliver Schools.

ANNUAL REPORT
Financial
Report
Gulliver Schools, Inc., a 501(c) (3) non-profit corporation, is committed to operating a financially stable, constant, and reliable organization that carefully focuses
on the school’s mission and strategic plan.
The school is committed to fiscal compliance, financial accountability, and adequate disclosures as applied to non-profit organizations. Please refer to the charts
indicating the source and the application of funds.
Gulliver operates a fiscally sound economic base which minimizes debt and tuition growth, and has implemented a system of internal controls designed to
reasonably ensure the safeguard of its assets and the proper authorization, execution, and recording of its transactions. In addition, the school engages the
services of Verdeja & De Armas, LLP as independent accountants to audit its financial statements and express an opinion concerning said statements. Their audits
include reviews and tests of the school’s internal controls to the extent they believe necessary to determine and conduct the audit procedures that support their
opinion.
“Having worked at Gulliver for the past fifteen
years as a teacher and administrator has given me
a unique perspective on the kind of institution it
is. Not only is our school a nurturing place for our
students, it is also a place where teachers can come
to realize their dreams as educators. Gulliver asks
great things of its employees, but gives them the
resources and support to help them achieve.”

“Gulliver Schools was the most extraordinary educational experience of my lifetime. While studying
there, I learned the value of becoming both an analytical reader and writer. I feel forever blessed that I
received such a Rolls Royce of an education.”

Transition
Transition
Gulliver’s Transition to a 501(c) (3)
Establishment of the 501(c) (3)
that vision, in fact, was the foundation of the Gulliver experience, and they
wanted Mrs. Krutulis and the Krutulis family to continue their involvement
with the school.
The idea of Gulliver Schools becoming a not-for-profit educational institution
was presented to the Miami-Dade County Industrial Development Authority,
who then issued the bonds to finance the transaction.
To this end, SFPS suggested that Mrs. Krutulis and John Krutulis establish
School Management Systems, Inc. (SMSI), which Gulliver, as a not-for-profit
institution, then hired to manage the school’s daily operations. SMSI has
the responsibility to provide accounting, legal, human resource, academic
administration, and overall management and day-to-day operations
services for Gulliver Schools. This whole transaction was approved by the
IRS. Mrs. Krutulis maintained her capacity as the school’s director, albeit no
longer the school’s owner, and her son, John Krutulis, became the school’s
associate director. The management company is currently under contract,
for which it receives an annual fixed fee, undergoes yearly audits by an
independent public accounting firm, and is monitored by the IRS.
The establishment of Gulliver Schools as a 501(c) (3) institution was a
complex two-year process.
Mrs. Krutulis sold all the net assets of Gulliver Academy, Inc., including
all real estate and personal property, to South Florida Private Schools,
Inc. (SFPS), a not-for-profit organization, in May 2000. SFPS was organized
as a Florida not-for-profit corporation in February 1999 by concerned
individuals who had strong ties to and represented Gulliver Schools. Their
goal was to preserve Gulliver as an educational institution in the MiamiDade County area, recognizing that the absence of Gulliver as a school
would be devastating to the community and a tremendous loss to the
students who would not have the opportunity to attend such an institution.
SFPS obtained tax exempt status from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) on
March 13, 2000.
SFPS engaged the services of PricewaterhouseCoopers to establish a fair
value of the net assets of Gulliver Academy, Inc. In May 2000, the acquisition
of the net assets of Gulliver Academy, Inc. was completed. This transaction
was financed by the issuance of Miami-Dade County Industrial Revenue
bonds and guaranteed by a line of credit from Bank of America. Following
the transaction, SFPS changed it name to Gulliver Schools,Inc.
The SFPS group believed Mrs. Krutulis’ vision of academic excellence and
her focus on values and family were integral to the Gulliver experience;
FAQ
Q – Why did Gulliver Schools become a not-for-profit?
A – To ensure Gulliver Schools’ existence in perpetuity
Q – What is the role of the school’s Board of Trustees?
A – The Board has primary responsibility over governance functions,
including but not limited to, long-term strategic planning, financial
oversight, fundraising efforts, and the evaluation of the school’s
management company.
Q – How is the relationship between the school’s management
company, School Management Systems Inc (SMSI), and Gulliver
Schools defined and monitored?
A – The terms of the relationship between SMSI and Gulliver Schools
are clearly defined in a contract filed with the Internal Revenue Service.
The Board of Trustees annually monitors and reviews the performance
of SMSI. They engage the services of an independent public accounting firm
to perform a full financial audit on Gulliver Schools.
Under the current structure, John Krutulis is head of school and Mrs.
Krutulis has transitioned into an emeritus status.
The Board of Trustees
The governance role of the Gulliver Schools’ Board of Trustees and the
management role of SMSI were clearly established, during the Gulliver
Schools’ not-for-profit transition process, following IRS guidelines. The
main duty of the Board is to ensure that the management company is
effectively maintaining the school’s health and current level of success. The
Board also has extensive fiduciary responsibilities and takes an active role
in the institutional advancement face of Gulliver Schools. The board has
delegated the day-to-day management function to SMSI.
Q – Does the Krutulis family get any percentage of my donation
to Gulliver Schools? Do Mrs. Krutulis and/or her son John Krutulis
benefit from tuition and fundraising revenues?
A – No. All donations to Gulliver directly benefit the school.
Q – So how are Marian Krutulis and John Krutulis compensated for
their services?
A – Marian and John Krutulis own SMSI, the for-profit management
company that oversees the day-to-day operations of Gulliver Schools. SMSI
receives a fixed fee for its services. Marian and John Krutulis are paid a
salary through SMSI.
Q – As a donor, how do I know for sure where my fundraising
dollars are going?
A – As a 501(c) (3) not-for-profit institution, Gulliver Schools has
accountability to all of its constituents; to that end, the school produces
an Annual Report, which discloses the sources and uses of funds received
during the fiscal year.
