In addition to the presentations from the invited speakers, we are also eagerly anticipating hearing from you about emerging exciting discoveries that can be considered for presentation at the meeting in the form of short talks or posters on topics including: • Developmental dynamics • Transcriptional memory and plasticity • Non-coding RNAs and retroelements • Chromatin structure and epigenetics • Stem cells and developing systems • Tools and techniques for in vivo analysis 19–22 SEP 2016 The word “aging” encompasses a range of physiological changes in humans, human tissues, and constituent cells. Alterations in metabolism, whether at the level of small molecules, protein homeostasis, signaling patterns, or intertissue communication, underpin many of the processes that ultimately decline or shift during aging. The recent wealth of information on how perturbation of metabolic factors can accelerate or impair aging processes makes this an exciting time to convene and consider the new biology being uncovered, its potential impact on human health, and the implications for the coming age of precision medicine. 10–12 JUL 2016 This meeting brings together scientists who have interests in aging and metabolism to explore the growing intersection between these fields and to discuss key questions in this area for human health and disease. Leaders in the field will share results from cellular research, investigations in model organisms, and studies with translational impact rooted in mammalian systems. 100 YEARS OF PHAGOCYTES SICILY, ITALY 10 YEARS OF IPSCS BERKELEY, CA, USA Phagocytes—of which the macrophage is the prototypical cell but which also include a variety of other cell types such as microglia, dendritic cells, fibroblasts, and osteoclasts—play a broad role in host homeostasis in addition to host defense. Their roles include underappreciated functions in development and aging, tissue remodeling during morphogenesis, repair, and malignancy. In 2006, Shinya Yamanaka and Kazutoshi Takahashi reported the Nobel Prize winning discovery of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) in Cell. In the 10 years that have passed since, iPSC technology has provided fundamental insights into our understanding of cell fate, mammalian development, and human disease. It has also spurred renewed interest in direct reprogramming across lineages, and this area too has flourished. Progress in understanding the biology of iPSCs and reprogramming has moved in parallel with work on clinical translation to apply the insights obtained, and the first iPSC-based clinical trials are already underway. 2016 marks the centenary of the death of Elie Metchnikoff, the Russian scientist who first discovered phagocytes. This centenary coincides with a surge of new molecular and cellular information about phagocytes that crosses traditional disciplinary boundaries. This renewed interest in phagocytes provides an ideal starting point for a meeting of cell biologists, immunologists, and developmental biologists interested in further exploring the phagocyte’s fundamental role in tissue biology, identifying gaps in our current knowledge, and defining disease pathways, beginning with infection and inflammation and extending beyond. The projected program will provide an in-depth analysis of a wide range of topics not covered in any meeting hitherto or planned for the coming years. 11 AGING & METABOLISM ARLINGTON, VA, USA To mark the 10 th anniversary of this landmark discovery, Cell Press is pleased to announce a symposium focused on iPSC research and applications. 25–27 SEP 2016 9–11 OCT 2016 TECHNOLOGY. BIOLOGY. DATA SCIENCE. BERKELEY, CA, USA A collaboration between Cell Press, UCSF, and MIT, this conference brings together leading thinkers in technology, biology, and data science for an innovative two and a half day meeting dedicated to the burgeoning research areas where these three fields are intersecting. Sessions will focus on technologies for multifaceted measurement of biological systems, computational data analysis and integration, understanding molecular mechanisms, perturbing and engineering biology, applications to disease and medicine, and commercial applications. Topics ranging from systems and synthetic biology, digital healthcare, cancer, genomics, immunology, biological engineering, microbiology, and cell biology will be covered, but anyone interested in interdisciplinary life sciences research and its applications should attend. 10–11 NOV 2016 BIG QUESTIONS IN NEUROSCIENCE (SFN SATELLITE SYMPOSIUM) SAN DIEGO, CA, USA The Neuron SFN satellite Cell Symposium will bring together leading researchers in the field to discuss the big questions in neuroscience today. The scope of the program will be broad, covering the diversity of what’s exciting and innovative in neuroscience today, from stem cells to neural networks and the latest in neurotechnologies. With an eye to the future of the field and a mixture of discussions and presentations, we will engage the speakers and the audience in a dynamic conversation about the latest advances in neuroscience. FUNCTIONAL RNAS GUANGZHOU, CHINA th Throughout most of the latter half of the 20 century, research on RNAs focused predominantly on their key role as intermediaries between DNA and protein. It was Jacob and Monod who originally proposed that RNAs, because of their intrinsic specificity, might be the elusive factors that instruct genes to turn on and off. In the end, these regulatory factors turned out to be proteins, now commonly referred to as transcription factors. Yet, with the discovery of small RNAs in the 1990s, a wave of new research on RNAs has resurrected the idea that RNAs can also serve regulatory functions. 6–8 NOV 2016 Recognizing the incredible interest and recent developments in the field, Cell Press is pleased to announce a symposium in November of 2015 devoted to the subject of regulatory RNAs. CELL-VIB SYMPOSIUM: HALLMARKS OF CANCER GHENT, BELGIUM As one of the most investigated areas in biomedical research, the cancer field is rapidly advancing by translating biological insights toward better detection and therapeutics, including molecular classifications as well as immunotherapies. In the era of the genetically informed, emerging concepts in cancer biology and oncology research are colliding into precision medicine. In order to accelerate the development of personalized cancer therapies and further translate fundamental discoveries into the clinic, there must be open lines of communication at the interface between the lab and the clinic. 11–13 DEC 2016 Our goal in organizing this Cell Symposium, Hallmarks of Cancer, is to convene global leaders in the cancer research arena to enhance our understanding of the key aspects of cancer and how to promote translation of this knowledge into the development of more effective therapeutics. We aim to provide a high-impact, high-profile forum for exchanging ideas and establishing a dialogue among clinicians, scientists, and drug development companies. 12 I N C O N T E N T Speak to the scientist in their native language.
