December 2013
Children at Bright Child-Child Development Center invite you to our annual Christmas Party being hosted in The Crossings on Friday, December 13 at 7 PM. We welcome
friends, family, and community members to join us for an adaption of the play, “Merry
Christmas, Charlie Brown” put on by our students.
Our talented teacher of the month is Marcia Sonsteby. Marcia did missionary work
in China, and she plans on being a children’s pastor. Marcia plans engaging and creative curriculum for our afternoon preschool program. The children practice their cutting skills while making unique projects that correspond with our theme of the week.
Marcia incorporates Chinese language and cultural facts into her curriculum. Marcia
also encourages independence by letting children choose which station they want to
explore during supervised free-choice time.
We are proud to have Marcia on our team! We invite you to come and tour our center
so you can meet Marcia and the rest of our dedicated staff!
Princeton Area Visionary Committee
has had a productive 2013!
Our mission/main goal is to be active
in making our area community an energy
filled, healthy, progressive and economically enhanced community. We feel that
we have a very healthy relationship with
the City of Princeton, Greenbush, Baldwin
and Princeton townships, the school system and the downtown community.
We have partnered with the City of
Princeton to move forward with the submission of a grant for the Legacy Grant
Fund. This is a second application; as last
years writing was not successful. We feel
that with this year “the formula” is correct. Carie Fuhrman, Princeton’s economic
developer “picked the brain” of the grants
chairman and he gave her the formula for
success!
The “whole” of Riverside Park and the
Rum River has been addressed:
1. Making the camping area better. Improving the sites, accommodating bigger
RVs and redoing the bathroom facilities.
Adding showers for the campers will be a
major improvement.
2. Picnic Shelter. Painting, adding electric and a new roof. This will have increased appeal to the park.
3. Pedestrian Bridge connecting Riverside Park and Riebe Park. This bridge will
be wheelchair accessible, bikers and walkers will have plenty of space. To the side of
the bridge will be a canoe launching on the
downside/right side.
4. Biking/Walking Trails from 2nd
Street/4th Avenue to run along the river
connecting with the bridge and continuing
through Riebe Park to the roadway lead-
ing into the park.
5. The “pump hill” would be moved making the trails accessible and making the
seating tier for the coming amphitheater.
This would be considered Phase I for the
theater.
* By working/addressing the whole park
for the Legacy Grant application we present a more comprehensive plan to allow
and bring the community into the beautiful Wild and Scenic Rum River arena.
The Otto Bremer Foundation is also
in the grant writing for 2013. As we addressed phase I with the Legacy Grant;
Phase II is the segment submitted for
funding. Phase II is the actual theater.
As both of these grants report in January, 2014; we will keep you posted! Kim
Skarohlid Young became our grant/fundraiser this past Fall. It has been with her
skills and Carie Fuhrman’s that we will be
successful! Kim has submitted to another
foundation for support dollars and we will
continue to move forward with other applications and fundraising.
The 4R Board - Rum River Recreation
and Resources, continues to work progressively to build the biking trails from Elk
River to Princeton and beyond! We support
their efforts and look forward to helping
them in any way that we can.
**You are always invited to join us! The
2nd and 4th Mondays at 8 a.m. (December, due to the holidays will have only one
meeting - December 9th).
Happy Holidays from the PAVC!

Ruff Start Rescue
Ruff Start Rescue is excited to announce that we
will be starting an education program for kids! We
will be going into schools in talking to children (starting with K-5) about animal rescue, the importance of
spaying/neutering, how to approach a dog, and many
more educational tidbits on animals! We have already
gone to one school this year and that was the Zimmerman Elementary. We spoke with 720 kids K-2 and it
was a great success! We are now working on forming
a wonderful committee to lead this new venture.
We are looking for committee members who are
able to attend monthly meetings in Zimmerman and
have either a background in education, working with
kids, public speaking, marketing, community outreach, and/or want to help make a difference for the
future generations to come! If you are interested in
joining us, please email education@ruffstartrescue.
org and fill out a volunteer application on our website
at www.ruffstartrescue.org
Other things we are in need of to make this a success:
• Name suggestions for
this program
• Monetary donations to
help fund the kids “packets”
we will be making. This will
include coloring sheets, brochures, stickers, pencils, etc.
*Checks can be made out
to Ruff Start Rescue and
sent to Ruff Start Rescue, PO Box 129 Princeton, MN
55371 or you can donate directly through our website.
• Donated printing services (even if you can print
50 pages and mail them to us, it all helps!)
• Most of all, we need dedicated volunteers who
want to join us in changing the world, starting with
Princeton, MN and surrounding communities!!
We want to say Thank you to the Princeton Rotary
Club for getting us started with a $500 donation to
help with printing our brochures!! We are very thankful and appreciate the support!

FINANCIAL FOCUS:
Time to Check Your Progress toward Your Retirement Goals
Now that another year is ending, it’s a good time to take stock
of where you are on your journey toward financial security. Of
course, you could find many different “measuring sticks” to assess your progress, but you can
certainly gain considerable information just by asking yourself
some basic questions.
Here are a few to consider:
How close am I to my retirement goals? Your comprehensive
investment strategy should include a reasonably good estimate
of how much money you will
eventually need to sustain the
retirement lifestyle you’ve envisioned. At least once a year, you
should evaluate how much closer
you’ve gotten to your goals than
the year before.
Am I making sufficient progress
toward my goals? When assessing
your progress, try to determine if
your portfolio is properly allocated between stocks, stock-based
vehicles, bonds, government securities, certificates of deposit
and other investments. If you’re
“overweighted” in a particular asset class, such as cash, you may
be impeding your ability to move
toward your goals.
Am I adhering to my invest-
ment strategy? To stick with your
investment strategy, you need to
invest at regular intervals and
meet regularly with your financial professional to review your
progress and make adjustments
— such as rebalancing your
portfolio — when necessary. Of
course, even with regular progress reviews and portfolio rebalancing, it can be challenging,
psychologically and emotionally,
to stick with a strategy. For example, during any given year the
financial markets could be down,
and your results might be disappointing. Nonetheless, if you
have built a diversified portfolio
containing quality investments,
and your portfolio is well suited
to your own risk tolerance and
time horizon, you don’t necessarily need to make changes following a down year in the markets.
What aspects of my life have
changed in the past year? Your
investment strategy should be
based entirely on your individual
needs and circumstances — so if
these have changed during the
past year, you may also have to
adjust the way you invest. Consider any and all changes in your
life — marriage, new children,
divorce, remarriage, new job,
new home, etc. — and then try
to determine what impact these
changes might have on your longterm financial strategy and if you
need to adjust that strategy in
response.
Have I changed my thinking
on my retirement goals? Over
time, you might undergo some
changes in your thinking about
retirement. For example, perhaps
you’ve decided that you no longer
want to retire early and travel
the world; instead, you’ve discovered a growing desire to open a
small business or do some consulting. Any significant changes
you make to your retirement
plans will likely have a big effect
on your savings and investment
strategies, so you’ll want to incorporate these changes into your
planning as soon as possible.
By asking, and answering,
these questions at the end of each
year, you should always have a
good sense of where you are in
pursuit of your long-term goals —
and what you need to do to bring
the realization of those goals closer to reality.
