On July 7 Katy became another location in the United States
where vehicles could fuel up with compressed natural gas with
the opening of the CNG 4 America fuel station at 24985 Katy
Freeway, just off I-10, across from Walmart. In attendance for the
ribbon cutting were Bob Baldwin, President of CNG 4 America,
Katy Mayor Fabol Hughes, Representative Mike Schofield, Texas
Railroad Commissioner Ryan Sitton and Lance LaCour, Katy Area
EDC. Station tours and demonstration on how easy it is to fuel up
with CNG were given.
Compressed natural gas, or CNG, is natural gas under pressure
which remains clear, odorless, and non-corrosive. Although
vehicles can use natural gas as either a liquid or a gas, most vehicles
use the gaseous form compressed to pressures above 3,600 pounds
per square inch.
Federal data shows there are more than 1,500 CNG fueling
stations in the country, including about 850 ones open to the public,
according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Texas trails only
California in total CNG stations with more than 70 public stations
and nearly 40 more that are kept private for corporate trucking
fleets and other uses.
“We’re starting to build along major routes now so you can
go from here to Florida in a semi (truck),” said Baldwin in his
remarks at the opening. CNG 4 America is based in Katy at 1773
Westborough Dr. “We think this is a great location. We are filling a
need in this area right along the heavily traveled I-10 corridor. We
also have routes planned for Laredo to Memphis and Denver to St.
Louis and others.” said Baldwin.

“Someday we will see $5 - $6 regular gas.
All it takes is for something to happen in the
Middle East.”
Bob Baldwin, President CNG 4 America
The station in Katy has five lanes that are primarily for large
trucks. “We have already been filling some bulk fueling trucks,
2,500 gallons, that are taking it out to the oilfields,” said Baldwin.
Another reason for this location choice was the availability of
nearby CNG pipelines. Baldwin explained that there are two large
lines that supply natural gas for Houston. “Our first quote to tap
into those lines was $550,000. I met with engineers and asked
them about how the natural gas for all the buildings in the area was
provided. Suddenly a light went on, we went to Centerpoint Energy
and they said they will install a meter station for that area of Katy
if we would sign a long term contact. The cost designated for the
station would be only about 20 percent, which would now bring the
price where it was more affordable.”

Let Them Eat Cake
Sophia Jorski is the owner of The Summertime Cakery in Katy. Her made-from-scratch gourmet cakes
and cupcakes are only available in the summer months. Photo by Debi Beauregard.
Seventeen-year-old Sophia Jorski has a passion for cooking, especially desserts. She
wanted to start a cake business after the Cottage Food Law passed, but couldn't figure
out how to balance success in both business and high school. She opened her business,
The Summertime Cakery, in 2013 after her freshman year. Once school ends in May,
she begins taking orders and baking her cupcakes, layer cakes and custom cakes. At the
end of summer, she closes the business to concentrate on her studies.
Jorski has been doing this for three years. "I wanted to make as many cakes as
possible, and a business was the best way to pursue that passion, " she says. "If you are
a teenager, you do not necessarily have to start a business to explore something, but
find a way to pursue your interests, whatever it takes. It is worth the work."
Through running her summer business, Jorski has realized how much she enjoys
running a cake business. Once she finishes high school, she is hoping to get her
accounting degree and expand the business to a year round venture. For now, you can
find her and her fresh, made-from-scratch cakes at www.thesummercakery.com. You
have until school starts to order one of the best cakes around.

“Service Matters”
The Katy master-planned community of
Cane Island has named Olivia Montagna as
Lifestyle Coordinator where she will plan
resident-only activities including movie nights,
wine and cheese events, fun runs, walks and
holiday festivals.
“Having Olivia on board as the community’s
Lifestyle Coordinator is like having a personal
assistant round out a family’s schedule,” notes
Dan Naef, president of Rise Communities,
developer of the 1,000-acre master-planned
community. “It’s one more reason families are
going to love Cane Island.”
Montagna joins Cane Island as the masterplanned community’s first residents make
plans to move into their luxury homes by the
end of summer.
Moreover, construction continues on the
community’s Welcome Center, Recreation
Center, family pool with adjacent splash pad
and poolside cafe. Crews also are busy with
the construction of a glass-walled conservatory
for exhibits and private events, two-story
fitness center, yoga studio and multi-purpose
room commercial kitchen.
Cane Island’s first phase also includes the
build out of an amphitheater, adult pool and
two spacious tree houses with decks offering
elevated views of the amphitheater and a $1
million mobile projection system. Open green
spaces, pocket parks and play areas which pay
tribute to the area’s rich history in railroads,

Former Cinco Ranch Softball Pitcher Now
D1 College Softball Assistant Coach
Dartmouth softball head coach Shannon
Doepking has announced that recent Class
of 2015 graduate Kristen Rumley will
join the coaching staff for the upcoming
2016 season.
“I'm really excited I get to continue to
be a part of Dartmouth softball,” Rumley
said. “Over the past few years as a player
I have gotten to see the program grow and
I am even more excited to see how that all
continues.”
The three-time Ivy League Pitcher of
the Year is the most decorated player in
program history and brings a wealth of
in-game knowledge and experience to
her new position as the pitching coach.
Rumley owns the Dartmouth career record
with 60 wins, 669 strikeouts, 19 shutouts,
60 complete games, 661.2 innings pitched
and 127 appearances. She is second in
earned run average at 2.13 behind Danica
Giugliano ’04 at 1.86.
In her four years with the Big Green,
Rumley was named the team’s Most
Valuable Player each season and was
recognized as a senior with the Kenneth
Archibald Prize, which is presented
annually to “the member of the
graduating class who has been four years
in attendance, who has been the best allaround athlete, regarded as being of moral
worth and high standing in scholarship.”
Rumley was instrumental during all
four years with the Big Green aiding the
squad to three straight Ivy League North
Division titles and back-to-back NCAA
Tournament appearances.
The southpaw racked up awards and
achievements throughout her career and
became the fifth Big Green to toss a
no-hitter when she fanned nine against
Columbia on Mar. 28. In total, Rumley
has garnered 11 Ivy weekly awards and
three First Team All-Ivy recognitions.
“I am very excited to bring Kristen
on staff, she had a huge impact on this
program and is someone who truly wants
to see this program succeed,” Doepking
said. “She was a tremendous pitcher with
a wealth of knowledge and I’m eager
to see the impact she will have on our
pitching staff.”
Rumley will also be tasked as the camp
coordinator, academic liaison, help with
recruiting, planning practice and video
coordinator.

for all America. “We need
to get as many vehicles

said Baldwin. “Someday we
will see $5 - $6 regular gas.
All it takes is for something

What would it cost to
convert passenger cars and
trucks to compressed natural
gas?
Baldwin speaks from
his own experience. “It’s
typically in the $7,000 to
$8,000 range for a standard
gasoline vehicle to be
converted to compressed
gas. Most of that expense
is for the cost of the tank. I
converted my vehicle five or
six years ago for $9,500. It’s
less than that now. In other
countries it is happening so
much that the price is way
down. If you are putting a
lot of miles on a vehicle, the
cost will be made back very
quickly.” Cost of CNG at the
Katy CNG America station
is $1.49 per gallon for the
grand opening but will

This is the third CNG
4 America station in this
section of Texas. Other CNG
4 America stations are located
in Rosenberg and Bryan with
additional stations planned or
under construction in Austin,

“We have a lot more to build

the grand opening: “We want

Katy Collegians Hoping for a Trip to Wichita, Kansas
By Tom Behrens
The rain has played havoc on the Katy Collegians
schedule this spring. Five games that were cancelled
are being made up the final weekend of the regular
season. One was played in Seguin Friday evening,
the second game in San Antonio on Saturday, 1:00
p.m., and then Austin Sunday morning. “We played
in Schulenberg twice. Nine games had to be moved,”
said Collegians head coach, Marc Jones.
The regional tournament starts the week of July 16 at
Stoney Point High School in Round Rock. From there
it depends on the number of teams that will make the
trip to the National Baseball Congress World Series,
Wichita, Kansas for the games at Lawrence Dumont
Stadium.
Jones, who is in his first year as the Collegians
skipper explains that the number of games you have
to win in Wichita is dependent on how many teams are
in the tournament. There are teams traveling in from
Oklahoma and Arkansas. Jones is the head baseball
coach at Kempner High School.
The Collegians advanced to the NBC World Series
in 2009 and 2010. “We missed the last two years,” says
Jones. The Collegians play in the Cen-Tex Collegiate
Baseball League. The team makeup includes recent
graduates from high school, some players still in high
school, college players, and even some former MLB
players.
The Collegians have had some MLB players in the
past. “This year we have a couple of players who
actually played professionally,” said Jones. “I don’t
think any of them have gotten any major league time
with the exception of one, Matt Rogelstad, who plays
second base for us. He is playing for the love of the
game.” In 2003 Rogelstad was drafted by the Seattle
Mariners.
Jones continues: “We have a player, shortstop,
Michael Hungate who actually graduated from
Cinco Ranch High School, played at Cisco Junior
College, and has recently signed to play ball at Oral
Roberts University. The majority of the players is
either in college or recently graduated from high
school. Derick Smith and Trent Bohny, both went to
Ft. Bend Christian.” Bohny has signed with Dallas
Baptist University. None of the players are paid; it’s
all amateurs.
The Collegians season began at the end of May and
continues through the end of July. The current wonloss record is 11-9. Home field for the team is Cinco
Ranch High School.
This year’s version of the Katy Collegians …
“They’re pretty gritty and determined,” says Jones in
describing the the team. “We have several kids that
have been in every game we played. That’s a tribute to
them of their dedication and class.”
The Season: “We had a little trouble with consistency
early in the season, getting into scoring position and
not being able to drive the runners home. For awhile
we got real hot, won five, six, seven games in a row,
until last night. One pitch cost us. A player hit a three
run homer in Seguin against the San Antonio Titans.
The Collegians are hoping for some big games from
pitcher, Jordan Hackett from Our Lady of the Lake. His
won-loss record is 4-1. “He actually is the consummate
pitcher. He doesn’t really have any special pitch he
throws. He has several different pitches from several
different arm angles; he keeps hitters off balance. We
just got him three weeks into the season.”
Jones says Mike Hungate is probably the teams’
leading hitter, “more of an on-base guy, a lot of singles
and doubles.”
Most of the Katy Collegians players come through
word-of-mouth. They don’t go out and recruit.
“Players tell other players from their school team about the
Collegians.” A good example is four players from Our Lady of
the Lake University in San Antonio.
“We get players from all over,” explains Jones. “Most of our
road games are through Austin and the San Antonio, area. That
helps us and the players. They don’t have to travel all the way
into Katy to play for us. Some of them do, but with us kind of
having two home sites, if you will, we make it work.”
Does Jones think the Katy Collegians will be back in Wichita
for World Series? “If we get good performance on the mound, we
should be a tough knock out for somebody. Everything is directly
proportional to starting pitching. If you have good starting
pitching you are usually pretty successful.” The National Baseball
Congress World Series begins July 24 with the championship
game on Aug. 8.

Texas A&M AgriLife Extension
Service to Offer Cottage Food
– Food Handlers Class
In 2013, a bill was passed in Texas allowing the sales
of homemade foods, also known as cottage foods. This
law opens up opportunities for individuals wishing to go
into the cottage food business, but requires individuals to
have a food handlers card.
A food handlers course accredited by the Texas
Department of State Health Services is being offered by
Texas AgriLife Extension Service – Fort Bend County.
The 2 hour class will focus on safety practices such as
personal hygiene, cross contamination and time and
temperature control to ensure that food is safe throughout
the preparation process. The class will also include types
of food allowed to be sold and proper labeling and
packaging of food. The class is scheduled for Friday,
August 21, starting at 9 a.m. at the Extension office at
1402 Band Road, Rosenberg.
To register for the course, call the extension office at
281-342-3034. Registration can also be done in person
the day of the course. The cost is $20.00 per person and
must be paid in full before the course begins.
Educational programs of Texas AgriLife Extension
Service are open to all people without regard to race,
color, sex, disability, religion, age, national origin or
genetic information or veteran status.
Libraries Announce Photo Contest Celebrating Fort Bend County
Fort Bend County Libraries will have a Photography
Contest in August for high school students and adults.
The theme of the contest is “Capture Fort Bend County.”
Amateur photographers of all skill levels are invited
to enter original photographs that portray the culture,
nature, people, and places of Fort Bend County – from
hidden gems in our communities to favorite places and
scenes around town.
Entries can be submitted at any of the libraries in the
Fort Bend County library system beginning August 1;
the deadline for entries is August 15, at 5:00 p.m. The
contest will be divided into two categories: high school
students in grades 9-12 and adults.
Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd-place
entries in both categories. Winners will be announced at
a special reception and awards ceremony on Saturday,
September 5, beginning at 2:00 p.m, at George Memorial
Library in Richmond. All photographs will be displayed
in the Bohachevsky Gallery at George Memorial Library
from August 31 to October 3.
Winning photographs will be determined by a panel
of judges, who will make their determinations based
on the following criteria: relationship to contest theme,
composition, focus, lighting, emotional impact, and
creativity. Photographs will be anonymous until after the
judging is complete.
All entries must be original, unpublished, and the
work of the person submitting it. Only one photo may
be entered per person. Photographs should be printed on
photo-quality paper, and must be no smaller than 8”x10”
and no larger than 11”x17”. Photos may be in color or
black-and-white.
FBCL reserves the right to print or display any entry
to this contest. Entries will be exhibited for the general
public to see, so they should be appropriate for all ages
to view.
The photographer is responsible for obtaining verbal
or written release for public use of the photo from all
identifiable individuals in the photograph submitted; the
photographer accepts all liability from the use of a photo
where this release has not be obtained.
The contest is open to amateur photographers only.
Professional photographers, who earn a living by selling
their photographs, are not eligible to participate.
There is no fee for entering the contest. Library
employees and their immediate families are not eligible
to win. For more information, call the library system’s
Public Information Office at 281-633-4734.
