January 1, 2013 marked the merger of two Habitat for Humanity affiliates
to form Habitat for Humanity of Greater Cincinnati creating a stronger
Habitat across the TriState with a single vision of serving more families.
The merger is exciting as it enables scaling Habitat resources in nine
counties in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana. Although the merger occurred
half way through the fiscal year, this annual report reflects the activities as
if we were merged for the entire fiscal year (July 2012 through June 2013).
We continue the tradition that Habitat for Humanity is a hand up and
not a handout. Families we partner with invest 250 to 500 hours of sweat
equity in their build working side by side with volunteers on their house.
Once complete, the house is sold to the Partner Family with an affordable
mortgage. Nothing is given away to these families other than opportunity.
In fiscal year 2012/3013 we completed 25 houses (15 new construction
and 10 rehabs) enabling 25 hardworking, low income families to achieve
the dream of decent, affordable home ownership. We also completed 5
Critical Home Repairs that returned these Veteran owned homes to decent
and affordable. And through our tithe to global building in El Salvador,
Kenya, Armenia and Cambodia we helped enable decent, affordable
housing for an additional 25 families. Net, through partnerships with area
churches, corporations, foundations and individuals we served a total of
55 families in fiscal year 2012/2013.
In fiscal year 2013/2014, we will stretch further to leverage our scale in
a quest to serve even more families. The need is still enormous. Thank you
to our many donors and volunteers that support our quest to eradicate
poverty housing.
More than 500 families have purchased Habitat for Humanity of
Greater Cincinnati (HfHGC) homes since 1986. A new five year
plan was adopted in 2013 that is designed to help us grow and
serve more than 100 families a year. All of the new construction
and rehabbed homes are built with volunteer labor, averaging
5,000 volunteers per year.
HfHGC operates four ReStores where we accept donations of
new and gently used building material, furniture, appliances
and home goods and sell it to the public at much reduced prices.
All proceeds go towards organizational sustainability and
building, rehabbing and repairing houses. The ReStores are
located in Bond Hill, Cheviot, and Hamilton, Ohio and in
Florence, Kentucky.
We operate a Critical Repair program that is focused on returning
homes to decent and affordable. A critical home repair is a repair
that eliminates a code violation, health, safety or access issue.
HfHGC completes the repairs capped at $15,000 and then offers
a 10 year, no interest repayment plan to the homeowner.
The iBuild program is an HfHGC training program designed to
provide construction training to Partner Families and to volunteers. The training provides Partner Families with knowledge and
confidence as they begin to help with building or rehabbing their
home. The training is also designed to prepare volunteers to join
a specialized volunteer crew such as framing, roofing, siding, trim
carpentry and more.
Each year HfHGC contributes a tithe to support the Habitat
for Humanity International mission worldwide. In fiscal year
2012-2013 HfHGC contributed $113,000 to building homes in
Armenia, Cambodia, El Salvador, and Kenya. Our tithe has made
it possible for over 800 families in those countries to have decent,
affordable housing. In addition to financial support, HfHGC
sends volunteers on Global Village Trips to build alongside
international Partner Families.

“I love the philosophy of ‘helping people help themselves’ which is central
to the Habitat mission. Working side by side with the partner family is very
rewarding but I also learn useful construction skills from the highly experienced site leadership volunteers, so I help others and myself at the same
time!" – Jim Johnson, Thrivent
“Working with Habitat for Humanity has been a very fulfilling experience
for me over the past 2 years. I never wonder if I am making a difference,
I know that I am! I volunteer for Habitat because I not only see my efforts
transform a house, I witness the transformation of someone’s life!”
–Ryan Cullen, St. Xavier High School
Be | Enlightened
“A great thing to be able to share with my children, and their children,
will be a long legacy of warmth and love. For me as a hard working single
mom, buying my own home and working on it shows that whatever you put
your mind to you can achieve it. It’s a blessing to have something you can
call yours, so building will be a great learning experience. I can’t wait to be
established and finished so I will be able to help out other families as well.
I just want to help as much as possible.”
–Rosalind Brand, Current Partner Family
“I always pictured myself in my own home. The process of building my
own home helped me build my self-esteem and develop more confidence.
It continues to grow every day. Living in my own home helped me raise my
last two children. I finally began to discover my true potential that had been
there all along.”
–Wanda Means, Partner Family

“P&G is proud of our partnership with Habitat for Humanity to make life
better for those in the Greater Cincinnati area who are less fortunate.
Over the past few years, hundreds of P&G employees have helped build
and clean dozens of homes. Providing the comforts of home to Habitat
homeowners through trusted brands like Tide, Downy, Swiffer, Mr. Clean,
Dawn, and Febreze is a great source of pride to all of us at P&G.”
