Were your ancestors from Angus (Forfar), Clackmannan, Fife, Kincardine and Perth
Counties in Scotland? If so, the Tay Valley Family History Society is requesting
submission of family histories for the next publication, "Tay Valley People in North
America." The deadline for submission is 30 September 1990. Submit to: Mrs.

you require a response, please enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope (Canadian

And speaking of SASE, it seems we're always finding neophytes who haven't learned
what that stands for. Any time we hope for an answer in return, we should remember
to include a legal-size envelope, which is already self-addressed and stamped. It
may be that our correspondant is stuck at home without a stamp, or that he has just
run out of large envelopes. Besides, it saves him a lot of trouble, especially if
he hears from many people. Even organizations appreciate the courtesy of an SASE.

FAMILY GATHERINGS
Prepared for publication by Mary Louise Graham Nazar
A YOUNG MANIS QUEST - Contributed by Mrs. Irene Tucker Chenoweth Alexander Douglass
5744 Barfield Circle, Memphis, TN 38119
A journal was written in Stewartsboro, TN by Hiram Kellogg NORTHWAY from December
1851 to December 1852. During this time he was getting established in the business
world, searching for his religious ideology, ;oining the Masons and sorting out his
feelings for the Southern belles before choosing the right one. He had come South
for his health. A daughter continued writing in the journal in 1875 when they were
living in Bexar Co TX. Hiram was born 8 Feb 1822 in Syracuse, N.Y., son of Josiah
and Ruth (Branch) Northway. He married 13 Oct 1852 Somerville, Fayette Co TN to
Susan Emeline PARKS, born 12 Jun 1831, daughter of John McDowell Parks and Hiley
TUCKER. H.K. died 20 Jan 1905 and Susan died Oct 1915, both in Nashville, TN.
Stewartsboro, Rutherford Co TN was a village near the Nashville Pike on Stewart
Creek and a place of some business, but when the railroad was completed in 1851 from
Nashville past Smyrna to Murfreesboro then business shifted to Smyrna. Hiram worked
for Mr. Fleming, a merchant in Stewartsboro. So how did he meet and marry a girl
living in Fayette Co TN? Susan/Sue E was visiting home of her cousin? Carrie Tucker
in Rutherford Co at the home of a Maj. Tucker. In the 1850 census Hiram is boarding
in the home of Silas Tucker. In the 1838 Fayette Co TN Deed Book is the following
entry: John M. Parks and wife H~ley and Ewing D. THOMPSON and wife Emeline, all of
Fayette Co, relinquish to Silas Tucker of Rutherford Co their interest in the dower
tract of Susan Tucker, widow of William Tucker, which land came to William by John
Tucker.
From this point let H.K. tell his story, but notice that he starts the journal on
Christmas day, a melancholy time to be away from family. Even if your surname is
not mentioned in this journal his words give an excellent picture of life in this
time period so you could imagine your ancestors and their activities day to day.
Stewartsboro, Rutherford Co Tenn Dec 25th 1851
To the one most dear the following pages are most respectfully dedicated. And altho
she will never read them my spirits musings shall be truly & unequivocably portrayed
so far as thoughts & feelings can be expressed through the medium of words. But the
one most dear: Who is that one? At twenty-eight I find this a difficult question to
answer. A sad predicament for an old batchelor. Does not this state of feeling or
want of concentration of feeling point out one of the greatest of my failings. I
have lived thus far without any definite purpose the sport of chance buffeted about
by every wave of fortune untill I have lost almost all individuality & have become
merely a mixture or compound of other peoples parts. If I had pursued one purpose
had kept one object in view & by the force of will made everything bend to that object would it have been so difficult for me now to have told who that one most dear
was. Would there not have been one of all my acquaintances confessedly more dear
than all others? Yes habitual consentration of mind would have led to such a result
& I should not now have been left in the dark as to who that one most dear may be.
Well I'll have a general overhauling of all the caverns of my heart place each fair
friend separately upon the alter & see which causes the quickest pulsation. Oh Love
Love I once thought I had made your acquaintance but I more than half suspect that
had the sensation I called love been impartially analized it would have consisted
of Avarice Pride & Lust a sad trio to be amalgamated & pass themselves for Love.
But this is a great digression from the usual routine of Journalists but as I intended it is rather a journal of thoughts or reveries than of events it must pass as
it is - Changing the subject \;fuat a strange way peop~e have of celebrating Christmas.
The most solemn event in the history of the world is annually celebrated by

festivities & frequently by excesses that would better become the triumphal celebration of a successful General. The day that should be spent in heartfelt Thanksgiving & prayer in deep humiliation & contrition is spent in riotous living & boisterous amusements. "Tis Strange tis passing strange to mark our fallacies" I shall
soon have to leave the place I have occupied for four years past & cast my lot
amongst strangers. Nearly four years of my life has past here & how am I benefited.
Not in wealth for I have not accumulated any. Not in moral improvement for I have
rather retrograded. I have gained some experience it is true but it seems as tho I
had paid dearly for it. But vain regrets are useless. Warm cloudy & rainy through
the day but cleared off about 9 o'clock at night.
Dec 26th 1851 Another day is past & has borne to eternity its record of
human events. Upon the Annals of eternity are recorded the various transactions of
every individual that is now an inhabitant of earth. One who rolls in wealth &
luxury who counts his gold by thousands whose broad acres extends for miles around
whose servants obsequiously stand to do his bidding has defrauded a poor widow of
her might & cast her friendless from her home & added her once quiet cottage to the
list of his possessions--Another with honede? accents & deceitful tongue has led
that fair being to her destructions & while an unfeeling world sends her forth as a
thing to vile for society it receives him the destroyer the fiend incarnate to its
bosom caressingly & prepares the way for another ruined character broken heart & untimely grave. Another by misrepresentation & falsehood has brought his neighbor to
disgrace & infamy thus probing that "Tis' ehe slanderer whose edge is sharper than
the sword whose tongue out venoms all the worms of Nile."
Spent an hour very pleasantly after breakfast and another after supper with "Carrie" & Miss Susan Parkes. Miss Carrie is a very sprightly girl with great originality perfect truthfulness & sincerity. With a heart alive to sympathy & kindness a
mind stored with a knowledge of the choicest literature of the english language she
is well adapted to promote the happiness of anyone who is worthy of so noble a girl.
Miss Susan is one of those rare persons who unite great piety with cheerfulness modesty with frankness & an independent spirit with a proper humility of deportment.
She is well educated converses with ease & is on the whole an ornament to the church
to society & to her family - In the society of these two young ladies I feel more at
ease & enjoy myself better than with any body else. But do I love either of them?
If so which? I have not gone through that self examination yet. When I have done
so perhaps I can answer that question more to my satisfaction. Brown B has been
Sick and I have been alone for two days. Nothing remarkable has occurred. Felt
great depression of spirits part of the day. Lay abed too late this morning. Suffered myself to become somewhat irritated very foolishly. Have not read a chapter
in the bible in a week. Have an invitation to go to Jackson Smiths. Cloudy
Dec 27th 1851 With a consciousness of great remissness & neglect of duty
I sit down to recount the transaction of the day. In the first place I got up too
late in the morning went to breakfast too late came back too late & in short was too
late about everything. The consequence is I have not enjoyed myself at all today.
I have been gloomy morose sullen dull spiritless soulless a curse to myself a blight
to society & a general nuisance in the most general acceptation of the term. The
weather has been cloudy & my spirits cloudyer storms without & storms within. It is
strange that I cannot learn from experience. When I do right I feel happy, when I
do wrong I feel miserable, thus proving in my case at least that even in this life
virtue has its reward & vice its punishment. That a correct course of conduct will
meet with an approving conscience & the smiles of heaven while the reverse invariable
attends the abuse of the talents that God has given us. Well they say the road to
hell is paved with good resolutions so I'll lay down another rock. Or in other words
make another resolution. But a resolution to do one single thing would do so little
towards reforming me that I will comprise several in one. I will try to do right in
Spring 1990

future. I wonder what it is that casts such a shadow over my spirit at times. If I
knew the cause I might possibly remove it. It is not because I have been disappointed in Love for it was the same before I ever dreamed of Love. I recollect my mother
told me once that I must overcome that spirit of Jealousy that I unfortunately possess or it would render me unhappy all my life. Is it not this feeling of jealousy
that sheds its mildew over my spirit. When I am in the company of two or more persons that are very much attached to each other I frequently become very melancholy.
If I should meet with some person in whom I could place the most unlimited confidence
into whose willing ear I could pour all my sorrows & be sure of meeting all that sympathy that my spirit craves one that I could love more than all other & meet with a
full return one that would make me their entire confident & look to me for sympathy
& consolation under all their afflictions would not this have a tendency to remove
their gloomy thoughts from my mind. If I could only feel that I was essential to the
happiness of a single being & that person one that I loved I believe that I should
enjoy as much happiness as usually falls to the lot of erring mortals. But the misfortune is if I should allow myself to love the probability is it would not be returned. My last status then would be worse than the first--Rained all day. Business
dull-Dec 28th 1851 Well I formed a resolution yesterday to do right in future.
And how have I kept it? By transgressing in the very way that I did yesterday. I
lay abed so late that I could not go to breakfast in time & finally concluded to do
without it. The consequence was I suffered with a most intolerable head ache all
day. Mrs Jas & Miss Jane Canon came home with us from preaching at the Ewing Church.
I went there in the Barouche in company with Miss Susan Park & Carrie. Mr Hill
preached from the first part of the first chapter of the epistle of Paul to Peter
commencing "Now add to your faith etc" & ending at the 8th verse. He gave a clear &
practical deffinition of the terms faith patience hope brotherly kindness charity etc
etc. Showed the effect of these principles upon the human mind the way in which we
are benefited by practicing them & evil effects of a neglect of a proper culture of
them. The Sermon was not long but still comprehensive 6tle plain practical & interesting. On the whole I think it one of the best sermons I have heard him preach.
After returning from preaching I should have enjoyed myself very well were it not for
the before mentioned headache. We sat in the parlor most of the evening conversing
upon various subjects but chiefly the great & important subject of matrimony. Mr.
Canon seemed to be somewhat devoted in his attentions to Miss Carrie & "him" I felt
equally so in my attentions to Miss Sue. I am afraid I stand on dangerous ground.
I am rather inclined to think that Miss Sue is already engaged. Well I'll try to
guard that truant member the seat of life alo? & love too from becoming too much interested. We took a walk in the evening nearly to the toll gate. Miss Sue became
more than usually animated & interesting. Were it not for fear of disinterested eyes
I would confess to you my dear Journal that I am more than half in Love with that
same Miss S-- But a "burnt child dreads the fire" consequently I dread falling in
Love. I wonder if it hurts any body else to be discarded as bad as me. If it does
they have a better faculty of concealing it. If it does not I pity their insensibility, for I had rather possess a sensitive mind & suffer in consequence than to
pass through life without possessing these finer sensibilities-- After leaving the
Ladies room I had a long & interesting conversation with Mr. Canon. I like him much
better than I do many of greater pretense. His kindness to his parents his unassuming worth & real piety render him a more desirable companion or friend than is every
day met with. The weather was warm & cloudy with some appearance of rain-Dec 30 1851 & 31st Tuesday was an important era in my history. The previous evening I recd an invitation to attend a party at Mr Lytles. It rained nearly
all day. I staid in the store untill dinner & then got ready to go to the party.
Went in the barouche in company with Miss Susan P & Carrie T. Enjoyed the ride very

altho it rained all the time. The Ladies were in fine spirits conversed upon various subjects such as love future prospects matrimony choice of companions qualifications necessary etc etc. Got to Col King's before dark & proceeded to J Lytles
where we arrived about dark without any serious accident. Found a large company
there notwithstanding the inclemency of the weather. The cheerful sounds of the
violin accompanied with the gingling of the banjo soon set the company to dancing.
This was continued until about 2 oclock when the Ladies retired to their beds & the
gentlemen to the card table & whiskey bottle. A few choice spirits assisted by
liberal potations of alchoholic spirits continued this exciting amusement until the
eastern horizon was illuminated by the rising sun. Before breakfast the dance was
resumed & continued without interruption till dinner. About 11 oclock I left on
horseback in co of Col King & Jas B. Moore for the residence of Col King. After enjoying a comfortable dinner I rode with Jim Moore to his plantation the future residence of himself & his fair "Ladie Love. II The situation ,vas pleasant but the
dwelling & out houses were sadly out of repair. But with youthful weded love for
their guest it may still be an earthly paradise. Came back to Col Kings & found
quite a large party of young ladies & gentlemen congregated in the parlor. After
supper each sought his or her favorite amusement. Some conversed others played
drafts thimble,
honor", & other similar intellectual amusements. As for me I
sat in the corner & looked on as I usually do. But afterwards was guilty of perpetrating the following for which I pray forgiveness The first day of Jan 1852
Our hostess as clever as clever could be
I spent with Col King & his Drum
The Servants polite & attentive to all
drinking crew
Bestowing their attention upon both
The ladies were witty & fair to behold
great & small
The gentlemen groggy vulgar & bold
For myself in the presence of beauty I'm
Our host was obliging generous & free
a fool
So I'll take my seat on the penitents'
stool
The Company was what is called the upper ten but I found to my utter astonishment
that there were some drunkards some knaves & more fools even on the upper shelf.
Think if I should go in company more my organ of self esteem would become wonderously developed for I find there are other fools in the world beside myself.
Jany 1 1852 Breakfasted at Col Kings & left about 10 oclock for home.
The weather was cold & drizzly the roads rough & muddy. Notwithstanding all this I
enjoyed the ride very well. There is something in the society of these lovely girls
that interests me to say the least. Look out you crabbed old batchelor you may be
entraped notwithstanding all your boasts of unsusceptibility. After dinner I went
to the store. Nothing of interest occurred. Gave Miss Sue a christmas gift consisting of a copy of Campbells poems. Felt much more like giving her myself. But
feared the gift would be less acceptable. Passed the day without doing one good
deed or forming a good resolution. I hope this day may not be an index of the year.
If it is it will be a year lost. A year lost: How awful that will sound at that
bar before which we must all stand. Life is short at best & still I loose fully one
half my time or misspend it which is still worse.
Jan 2nd 1852 Arose & Breakfasted early. Spent an hour or so with the
girls in the parlor & then went with them to Mr. Hazlewoods. Took the buggy after
dinner & carried them by Mr Flemings store where we called a few moments & then we
went home. Passed the day pleasantly tho unprofitably. Heard of the iniqutous proceedings of Mr J Bennets wife. Weather cold & cloudy as it has been several days.
Jan 4th 1852 Went to the chapel at Asberry to preaching. Arrive a few
minutes before close of service. Went as usual in the barouche with Carrie & Susan.
Spent the day very pleasantly though I fear it will be recorded in the annals of
eternity as a day lost. If I don't leave the society of these Lovely young ladies

Family Gatherings (continued)
I shall loose the last vestige of a heart-Jan 5th 1852 Went to Murfreesboro in the barouche with Carrie & Susie.
Had a bad cold & felt very unwell in the morning but soon forgot it after starting.
Carried the young ladies to Mrs Elliotts & called for them in the evening. Snowed
Jan 6th 1852 Went to Mr Pope's to make arrangement about going to Nashville & setting up our business. Found him at Jackson Smiths. He promised to go to
Nashville on Thursday but I fear he will disappoint me. Several Ladies at Jacksons
Miss Ellen Buckhanan & two Miss Williams. Very pleasant girls all of them. snowy
Jan 7th 1852 Talked with the girls went to the store went to John Popes
Jan 8th Mr. Pope having disappointed me about going to Nashville I staid
at home most of the day & then went to his house. He took up his old note of $702
& gave me two in its place payable in bank & requested me to present them to Lucket
Davis for endorsement. Was to have been received into the Masonic Fraternity but
the weather being bad & my health worse & if I must say it my Company so good that I
declined going. Snowed blowed rained etc all day.
Jan 9th 1852 Went to Nashville though before going went to Luckett Davis'
& presented the notes that Mr Pope gave me for his signature which he gave without
any hesitation. Went to N on the cars [railroad] in the morning & returned in the
evening. I wonder if any body but myself suspected the cause of my haste. Hope
they did not but fear greatly that they did. That girl or these girls will be the
ruin of me yet I fear. Yet I must acknowledge their influence has had a very salutory effect. I am a better man while with them than when I am with any body else.
Passion seems to slumber & the better feelings of my nature are awakened & brought
into exercise. Weather warm & cloudy-Jan 10th Stayed at home in the forenoon & assisted Major Tucker & C.L.
Davis in their settlement. Went to Jefferson in the evening & traded J. McDowels
note for a horse? with Mr Waller. After supper assisted still farther in the settlement as in the morning. Snowy cold & rainy
Jan 11th 1852 Went to preaching at the academy with C & S as usual. Felt
very low spirited in view of my coming separation. Found but 8 or 10 at church.
Jan 12th 1852 Went to J Popes in the morning & then to Flemings to commence my life of servitude. I would confide to my only confident my feelings upon
leaving my home but they are past description. But if my feelings upon leaving home
were past description what were they when about to part with two friends the only
two female friends I have. I did not weep but there was a choking sensation about
the region of the throat that almost deprived me of the power of speech. I wonder if
I am in Love. If I am not I do not know what kind of a sensation it is that draws me
almost irresistably into the company of that girl or those girls for I hardly know
which I love the best. I love them as friends thats' certain. Well they say that
"absence conquers love" so I'll test the matter for a week at any a rate. cold/clear
Jan 17th 1852 From Monday 12 to Saturday 17th I have been engaged in the
store with nothing hapening of peculiar interest. Today the Legislature of the state
that body of wisdom the Savans of Tenn took a pleasure trip in the cars to the end
of the road. Found things more pleasant at Mr Flemings than I anticipated. Mrs F
is a very pleasant lively lady with the bump of don't-care-a-tiveness largely developed. Mr F is a perfect tyrant in his disposition but still he governs himself very
well & has treated me as well as I could wish. Mr Davis went away after supper tonight very much to my satisfaction. A more conceited arrogant ignorant & ill manered1y young man it has seldom been my lot to associate with. With just sense enough
to raise him above the idiot he has an immoderate deg~ee of self esteem & impudence
to match. However I have to endure his company a burthen placed upon me I have no
doubt for some wise purpose probably to teach me lessens of forbearance towards inferiors for such cannot but esteem him altho my organ of self esteem according to
phrenology is not largely developed. Mr. Champ is in almost everything the reverse

of the one above mentioned. With a naturally good tho uncultivated intellect he has
great modesty a quiet orderly deportment & a natural inclination to please. I believe him to be honorable & highminded doing right for the sake of right. A greater
contrast I have seldom seen between two young men-- I had like to have forgotten to
tell my good friend that I was admitted into the lights or a portion of them of
masonry. It is an institution which rightly carried out must improve the mind &
heart-- The weather has been very fine today the first in several.
Arose about sunrise but got ready for breakfast before the bell rang. It
rained quite hard but my anxiety to see my fair cousins (as I have permission to
call them) was such that I concluded to go notwithstanding the inclemency of the
weather. I found them both at home comfortably seated around a cheerful fire. Mr
Hazlewood & Margaret were there also. The day passed very pleasantly altho I was
guilty of becoming a little offended at a remark made by Maj Tucker. I still think
it was a very unthoughted & foolish remark to make under the circumstances but still
I ought not to have allowed myself to become irritated by it. I was surprised at
some remarks made by Mr Hazlewood evincing a great disregard for the sabbath & for
the institutions of religion. But still I could hardly regret it inasmuch as it
gave me an opportunity of witnessing with what boldness yet modesty Cousin Sue advocated a strict adherence & obedience to not only the letter but the spirit of the
Gospel. She openly avowed her belief of the necessity of remembering the Sabbath
day to keep it holy that it was wrong to do or cause to be done anything that could
be done on any other day to indulge in any kind of light reading or thoughtless conversation pleasure rides or any kind of amusement that would produce a train of unholy thought or cause others to sin or bring a reproach upon the cause of religion.
I was very much pleased also to see how heartily Carrie coinsided with her in her
views & opinions notwithstanding she makes no pretension to piety. It shows that
she is not insensible to the requirements of the Bible & that she is not so thoughtless as she often appears. Stayed till after supper & then rode home & to Mr Flemings. Before leaving I made an engagement to return next Sunday morning. Carrie &
Sue requested me to go to Marshall with them but owing to my other engagement it was
impossible for me to comply unless they could induce Mr Fleming to consent to my absence. This they said they would attempt. Brought my horse that I traded for in
Saturday to Mr F.
Tuesday Jan 20th How weak & puerile are all human resolutions unless supported by that arm that is willing & able to help those who put their trust in them.
"0 how weak is mortal man how trifling how confined his scope of vision" He resolves today in all the pride of conscious strength tomorrow finds his resolutions unperformed. And what is worst of all the failure to perform his resolutions weakens
his mental power in all future time. Instead of growing in strength of character by
vowing to the Lord & performing his vows he becomes weak & imbecile by excessive indulgence. And here the question arises. Ought we under these circumstances to form
resolutions that there is a probability of our failing to carry into effect. One
thing is certain we ought to weigh well the matter & view it in all its lights before forming a resolution & when we become convinced that it is our duty to adopt a
certain course of conduct then the resolution should be made & its performance invariably follow. I resolved to discontinue the use of all bie? words & vulgarity.
I have failed to carry out this resolution. But being convinced that it is a good
resolution I will double my diligence in the future. Mr F returned from N today.
The truth is if I had some one depending upon me for support some one into whose
willing ear I could pour the tale of love in return I could perform my daily duties
with much more cheerfulness. But I am conscious that I shall never be so situated.
So I will endeaver to amass sufficient to support me & prevent me from ever becoming
a tax upon others •••

FAYETTEVILLE OBSERVER, Lincoln Co TN, April 11, 1872, V. XIX #9 - A FAMOUS FAMILY from Memphis
Appeal, April 7, 1872. No one familiar with the political history of the U.S. for the past 40
years is ignorant of the personal history of George W. JONES who through an almost ordinary
lifetime represented the Lincoln District of Tennessee in the Congress of the U.S. and the Confederacy. The history of Mr. Jones' family, of whom there are five brothers and a sister is
remarkable. William D.C. Jones, the oldest brother, was born 13 Dec 1799 and resides in Bastrop
Co TX. Henry T. Jones, born 3 Apr 1801, resides in Shelby Co TN. Martin S. Jones, born 5 May
1802, resides in Marshall Co TN. George W. Jones, born 15 Mar 1806, resides in Lincoln Co TN.
Richard M. Jones, born 22 May 1807, resides in Greene Co MO. Mary J. Jones, wife of George
SMALL, born 16 Sep 1810, resides in Shelby Co TN.
The above five brothers and one sister were born in King & Queen Co VA and are the children of
James Jones, a native of said county, and Jane SLAUGHTER, his wife who died in King & Queen Co
on 1 Oct 1810 leaving surviving her the above named six children and one other daughter about
18 months old. She died about 2 years after her mother. There has been no other deaths among
this family of children now nearly 62 years ago. James Jones, the father, removed with his family to Giles Co TN in the spring of 1816 where he died on 20 May 1820. The five sons and the
daughter separated in 1820 and met for the first time since that year on the 4th instant at the
residence of Judge Henry T. Jones, of the Shelby County Court, a few miles from this city. All
6 were in Memphis yesterday and had their photos taken at Y. DAYS Gallery on Main St. opposite
Odd Fellows Hall. The whole party as guests of Judge WALKER dined together at Madame VINCENTS,
the happiest convocation to meet in Memphis during the century.

BOOK REVIEWS
Lincoln Johnson and Bess C. Twaddle
UNITED STATES CENSUS OF 1850, DEKALB COUNTY TENNESSEE compiled by Jorene Washer Parsley.
Soft back, 8ixll.
$21.50
Indexed, 103 pp.
1988.
Order from compiler, Rt. 5, Box 43, Smithville, TN 37166.
There is an advantage to having a census which has been read by a resident of the county in
question, as is true in this case. Ms Parsley is familiar with the names in her area which
helps to interpret the old handwriting of the enumerator. Moreover, she has enlisted the aid
of fifteen friends, who have added helpful information to the usual record, such as "father of
Ebenezer who m. Charlott McGuire." A map of the civil districts in 1850 giving their names
and numbers is a very helpful addition.
THE JONESES OF KENTUCKY'S CALLOWAY AND MARSHALL COUNTIES, 1820-1910 by Henry Earl Jones. 1988.
Soft back, 8ixll. Indexed, 498 pp. Order from The Kentucky Joneses , Southern Mycology, Inc.,
P. O. Box 982, Fairhope, Alabama 36533. $18.45
Being a Jones, both of whose parents were Joneses, is reason enough to try to sort out the
lines; but when 93 of 130 Jones families are concentrated in one area, the author felt compelled to identify every possible individual. Computer technology made it possible for him to
accumulate and manipulate a large data base for correlations between person, place, time etc.
The author says that this impressive volume is "by no means an exhaustive study of the Joneses
of Calloway and Marshall counties. It is a beginning!" To use this large computer-generated
volume, one should begin with the index, which provides each person with a record identification number, indicating that person's paternal line. Maps of the Middle Mississippi Valley
(1793-1819) and the Purchase Area (1818-1886) provide valuable sources for all persons researching in western Kentucky.
MACON COUNTY, TENNESSEE CEMETERY BOOK - VOLUME II compiled by members of the Macon County Historical Society. 1989. Hard back, 8ixll. Indexed, 531 pp.
Crowder, Treas., Rt. 3, Maple Terrace, Lafayette, TN 37083.
Order from the Society, % Kay
$53.00
This volume contains information from 280 cemeteries. It includes listings from the remaining
Macon County cemeteries not published in Volume I, plus selected ones in surrounding counties.
There are approximately 12,000 names in the full-name index. Separate sections give additions
and corrections for Volume I and valuable information gleaned from research of mortuary records. A few errors in the index may be corrected by looking on the preceding or succeeding
page.
INTERNATIONAL VITAL RECORDS HANDBOOK compiled by Thomas Jay Kemp. 1990. Soft back, 8ixll.
Alphabetically arranged, 355 pp. Order from the Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., 1001 N.
Cal vert St,., Baltimore, MD 21202. $24.95
Genealogists always need information on where to write for birth, marriage and death records.
This book not only tells where to write, but provides facsimilies of each necessary form, and
offers helpful advice and information, such as: "No personal checks are accepted"; " ... you may
call and charge your certificates to Visa or Master Card." "The Maryland State Archives has
restrictions on birth records for 100 years and death records for 20 years •.. " Divided into
three parts, the book covers sixty countries and territories. The section on North America
covers the U.S. States, Territories, Canada, and English-speaking Caribbean. The other two
sections cover the British Isles and Europe.
1870 UNITED STATES CENSUS OF PUTNAM COUNTY, TENNESSEE.
1880 UNITED STATES CENSUS OF PUTNAM COUNTY, TENNESSEE.
1989. Indexed, 164 pp. $25.00
1989. Indexed, 210 pp. $30.00
Transcribed and compiled by Norman T. and G. Kay McGee. Soft back, 8ixll. Order from Lilac
Hill Publications, G. Kay McGee, 6201 Patton Rd., Arrington, TN 37014.
Each census schedule contains an introductory guide to abbreviations of occupation, column
headings, states and countries. There is also a guide to miscellaneous microfilm data and a
plat defining the civil districts. The 1870 list has 8,698 individuals, and was later used as
an aid to correct information in the 1880 census, whose film-quality was variable. Both covers
feature an attractive illustration of the Buffalo Valley Post Office; the 1880 census includes
one of the Bird S. Jones Cemetery & U. S. Jones Family Home, both by Ernest L. Jackson.

SCOTTISH LOCAL HISTORY - An Introductory Guide by David Moody. 1986 GB; 1990 USA. Hard back, 6x9.
Indexed, 178 pp. Order from the Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., 1001 N. Calvert St., Baltimore,
MD 21202-3897. $22.45
Family researchers are aware that local history is a good source for the genealogist, essentially
combining the best elements of genealogy in it's purist form with basic history. This book provides some Scottish sources available in public libraries, archives and records offices. Mr.
Moody demonstrates the methodology of local history research by concentrating on the relationship
of family to community and the place of deed records and property registers in research. He uses
the studies of settlement patterns relating to individual towns, villages and parishes. The last
chapter is about a problem for many researchers - publishing their results.
SCOTTISH FAMILY HISTORY by David Moody. 1988 GB; 1990 USA. Hard back, 6x9. Indexed, 219 pp. Order from Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., 1001 N. Calvert St., Baltimore, MD 21202-3897. $22.45
This general history of Scottish family structures is not about designated families and presents a
much broader treatment than a genealogical family research. It is especially directed toward
persons who are interested in the methodology of their research into Scottish families. The relationship of family to trades, professions, religions, clans and surnames as well as the process
of migration and how it affected communities and kinship structures. Some conventional sources
such as church records, memoirs and government records are used to indicate their elements in
family research. This interesting book details clan history dO\Vll to the present.
CHILD APPRENTICES IN AMERICA from Christ's Hospital, London 1617-1778 by Peter Wilson Coldham.
1990. Hard back, 6x9. Indexed, 164 pp. Order from Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., 1001 N.
Calvert St., Baltimore, MD 21202-3897. $24.00
Christ's Hospital, established in 1553, was for the benefit of London's orphaned children who were
supposed to be legitimate children of freemen in the City of London and were to be prepared for
entrance into a university or apprenticeship to a trade. As early as 1617, and continuing through
the American Revolution, large numbers of Christ's Hospital scholars took "articles" and left England to serve apprenticeships in America. Beginning with those children who were apprenticed to
the Virginia Company in 1617, approximately 1,000 of such children left England to take up apprenticeships. Mr. Coldham extracted this information from the "Children's Register" in the manuscript department of the London Guildhall. The Entries give the name of the child, date of birth
or baptism, date of admission, native parish, name and occupation of the father, date of discharge,
name of the person to whom apprenticed and place in America where the apprenticeship was to be
served.
A GUIDE TO IRISH CHUCHES AND GRAVEYARDS by Brian Mitchell.
1990. Hard back, 7xlO, 151 pp. Order
from Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., 1001 N. Calvert St., Baltimore, MD 21202-3897. $32.50
In this book, every church and burial ground in Ireland, regardless of the denomination, is identified in relation to townland or street address. Each townland is located within it's appropriate civil parish, and each civil parish is listed in alphabetical order within it's county and
is preceded by a number which gives it's location in The New Genealogical Atlas of Ireland. Another column gives the Ordnance Survey map number which allows you to find the exact location of
a church and/or graveyard. The source of this information is taken from a survey of Sir Richard
Griffith in which every household in Ireland was recorded between 1848 and 1864.
800 MISSOURI FAMILIES, VOL. II, 201 pp. 800 MISSOURI FAMILIES, VOL. III, 192 pp, by Don Vincent.
1989. Both soft back, 81xll. Each indexed. Order from Don Vincent, 10233 Meridian E., B2l2,
Puyallup, WA 98373. First book $27.50, each succeeding book $26.50.
In 1988 Mr. Vincent pegan a series of studies on families who lived in the area of Pulaski County,
Missouri as it was bounded in 1840. In investigating his own family, he found a number of families there who had come from East Tennessee. "After many years my list of Tenn-to-Mo families had
grown to eighty." Using the 1840 census of Pulaski as a starting point, he has identified 800 of
the 1136 Heads of Household. Volumes 2 & 3 continue the study of more of those 800 families who
lived in present day counties of Pulaski, Laclede, Webster, Wright, Texas, Phelps, Maries, Osage,
Miller and Camden. Other researchers have contributed material on their families of the area,
and Mr. Vincent states that there may be as many as ten volumes.

THE SCOTT'S ALL THE FAMILY by Eila Fern Scott O'Toole.
384 pp.
1989. Soft back, 81Xll.
Order from the author, 32720 McConnell Court, Warren, MI 48092. $35.00
Indexed,
The author begins her account with Thomas Scott of Bensalem Township, Pennsylvania and continues with his descendants who migrated to Zanesville, Ohio; Marshall, Clark County, Illinois, and Dudley, Missouri. The many five-generation charts, maps and reproduction of family
pictures and documents supplement the numerous family group sheets. The book is divided into
sections, indicating the connection of O'Toole and Griffin/Griffith families with the Scotts.
Each section is indexed at its beginning. Dobbs, Huffman and Shea are allied lines.

CERTIFICATE OF TENNESSEE ANCESTRY
In 1986 the Tennessee Genealogical Society began a program to recognize descendants
of the state's earliest settlers and to preserve their history. We have received
records on many of our founders, and publication of that material is in the planning
stages. If you have an ancestor who lived in Tennessee at any time from first settlement through 1880 you are eligible to participate in the Certificate Program. It
is not necessary for you to be a member of the Tennessee Genealogical Society, or
for you to live in Tennessee. It is only necessary that you have a documented ancestor who did. There are three categories:
Prior to Statehood (1796): Pioneer - Certificate of Tennessee Ancestry
1797 to 1850: Settler - Certificate of Tennessee Ancestry
1851 to 1880: Certificate of Tennessee Ancestry
Pictured below is a reduced copy of the certificate. The 8 x 11 inch original is
printed on ivory parchment with background illustrations in a gray half-tone. Printing is black highlighted by a gilt border. A shiny gold seal decorates the Settler
certificate, with a ribbon added for the Pioneer cerLificate.
