opportunity to showcase Lexington’s strengths in manufacturing and to network with a variety of companies that have operations worldwide. Our team
met with some of our existing manufacturing companies in Chicago as well as
companies interested in expanding.
EDITOR’S NOTE:
As a part of Commerce Lexington’s economic development efforts,
we visit 150 companies each year to gauge our local business environment, to be a helpful resource and to guide them through incentive programs as they grow in Lexington. As we meet with companies, our team wants to make you aware of some of these great
businesses in Lexington that you may not know.

POLICY LUNCHEON - FRIDAY, OCTOBER 10, 2014 | POLICY BREAKFAST - WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 15, 2014
Senator McConnell, Secretary Grimes Headline Upcoming Policy Events
In October, Commerce Lexington Inc. is offering its members and guests a ring-side seat to
observe what many political pundits are calling the most watched United States Senate race in
America. Both United States Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and Secretary of State
Alison Lundergan Grimes have graciously accepted an invitation to participate in separate policy
events presented by Kentucky American Water.
Just weeks before the election, our members and guests will have the opportunity to hear the
candidates make their case as to why they should represent Kentucky in the United States Senate
for the next six years. Many observers believe the outcome of this race could determine which party
controls the United States Senate, and thus its policy agenda for the foreseeable future.

Leadership Central Kentucky Kicks Off 2014-15 Program With Orientation

Article by Audra Meighan, Integrity IT
Jessamine County never saw what hit it when the
Leadership Central Kentucky Class of 2014-15
arrived there in August. Twenty-three dynamic, eager
leaders representing eight different counties came
together at the Comfort Inn on US 27 August 21st
for an action-packed overnight orientation.
Amy Carrington Stallard kicked off events by introducing sponsors Nila Wells of Toyota and William
DiOrio from KU who shared some inspiration and
advice. Board Director Amy Cloud also joined the
opening ceremonies and welcomed us to her neck of
the woods. The majority of the session was led by
Dr. Virgil Grant who engaged us in team-building
exercises followed by thorough discussion.
Friday met the class with a new “mango” challenge where we discovered who the serious negotiators in the group were. After a quick review of how
different people approached the negotiation exercise, we headed to Wilmore for our next challenge at
Asbury’s Ropes Course.
At this point, we had really exerted ourselves
mentally and socially, but now we faced the additional challenge of physical toughness. We all dug into
hot dogs and hamburgers for lunch and enjoyed a
meal under the picnic table shelter. When finished,
we got to know the Asbury staff and did a few ice
breaker exercises with them. We then split into two
groups and faced the low ropes course challenge to
get our feet wet. Once we conquered the low ropes,
we geared up for the high ropes challenge and headed down the hill to see what awaited us.
And, oh, what awaited us! Among the treetops
were bridges made of rickety swings, ropes, and
nets. After safety training, some people attacked the
course, while others stayed on the ground to serve
as failsafes. We all watched as our new friends got
stuck, got tired, got scared, and got through the
course - cheering them on whenever they needed it.
Bill Ellis and Brandon Helton fearlessly battled to
see who could complete the course the most times,
while Billie Peavler paved the way for swinging as the
way back down to the ground. Everyone helped
someone.
After a quick review of what we’d learned, we all
headed back to the vans and said goodbye until next
month. And, I’m really looking forward to next
month, and the next month, and the next...

Leadership Lexington ‘Let’s Get Started’ Day
Article by Jay Inman, Littler Mendelson, PSC
On September 11th, the Leadership Lexington class
of 2015 participated in its first day session. Entitled
“Let’s Get Started,” the program afforded class members an opportunity to explore Lexington’s history and
future, as well as develop leadership skills.
The day began with a poignant opening reflection
from Warren Rogers, who emphasized the power of
September 11. A short walk down Main Street later, the
class reached the Government Center, where Mayor
Jim Gray shared a fascinating history of Lexington,
reaching back to the days when settlers first reached
this land.
At the Lexington Public Library, the class began with
a presentation and question-and-answer session with
Executive Director Ann Hammond. Next, the group
learned about the past, present, and future of
Lexington from Jeff Fugate from the Lexington
Downtown Development Authority.
Following lunch, the class broke out into groups and
worked on their four group projects for the year. After
the group reports, Ryan Lisk, Managing Partner of Lisk
Associates, led a leadership development session
focused on the book The Complete Leader. Finally, the
class enjoyed a spirited closing activity led by Doyle
Freano, Jr., Dentist and Owner of Dentistry for All Ages.
