Around and About Town:

Getting Out on the Lake
At this time of year, many people in Markstay-Warren take to the water. Swimming, boating and fishing are popular summer activities in our town. There
are two prominent lakes to visit: Ratter Lake and Nepewassi Lake. There are
also countless smaller lakes and rivers to be enjoyed, both within our municipality and just outside of it.
Some people are lucky enough to own a swimming pool and, when the
days get hot, they can cool down immediately. Unfortunately, not everyone is
so fortunate. However, just about anyone can swim in a lake. Swimming in a
lake offers the luxury of space. You can swim endlessly, which is great exercise. In a small lake, like Ratter Lake, it is possible to swim from one side of
the lake to the other, if you have good upper body strength. Playing games is
fun too; when throwing a ball back and forth, players can have a lot of space
between them.
Boating and fishing often go hand in hand. Most people who live near
a lake own a boat. Boating is a very relaxing pastime. You can go as fast or as
slow as you want, while enjoying the rock of the waves and the beautiful landscapes our municipality has to offer. Kayaks and canoes are slow-moving boats that can be enjoyed by anyone. A pontoon boat allows its riders to dive into the water and swim off of it, which can be a lot of fun. With any type of boat, you
can stop and tour the little islands often found in our lakes, and you might find blueberries or pretty birds. With a fishing
rod in hand, you might even catch a nice fish for supper! Hopefully, you’ll catch the big one that you can brag about for
years to come!
As with anything, safety is important. When boating, always make sure to have the necessities on board: lifejackets, a whistle, a flash light, a bailing bucket, a paddle, an anchor and a rope. The person driving must be licensed
and cannot be drinking. When the rules are followed, everyone will have fun. Now, get out on the lake and soak up the
summer sun!

along, feel free to contact her at [email protected] and she may include your input in her next article.

EMO Message, Emergency Survival Kit Important Considerations:
It is important to remember that Emergency Survival Kit items are only a suggestion and may or may not apply to every emergency situation and/or a person’s special needs. Therefore you should decide which essential items to include for yourself and your family members. Keep in mind that during an
emergency you may have no electrical power. During an emergency you may need to go to an emergency evacuation shelter. It is recommended that you
and your family have a designated contact person who resides outside of your immediate community. This way, in the event of an evacuation, family
members can easily notify each other by calling their designated contact person. Pack and store all emergency survival items (including medications,
medical supplies and/or assistive devices) in an easy-to-access and easy-to-transport container should you need to evacuate. Select a network of individuals at work and home that will be able to assist you during an emergency. (Make sure you inform your network of where you keep your emergency
survival kit.) Prepare a list of any food or drug allergies you might have and all the medications you are taking (e.g., medical condition being treated) including the generic name, dosage, frequency, and the name and contact information of the prescribing physician. If you have children with a disability or
special needs, prepare a similar list for each of your children and provide it to their caregiver, school, emergency contact members, etc. If you have an
allergy, chronic medical condition, or special medical need you may want to consider owning and wearing a MedicAlert bracelet or identification as part of
your emergency preparedness plan. For more information visit: www.medicalert.ca
